I have fond memories of Black Bear Diner in Nevada, but had never been back to one. This regional chain is a favorite, so for a road trip breakfast we stopped at this one. Surprisingly this is the original one, so it did have an older vibe with all the bear themed decor. It was in a more commercial part of town among many strip malls. There was plenty of parking, which was busy. We were quickly seated in a nice big corner booth. Service was friendly and fast. They have a large varied menu that looks like an old newspaper. We got a variety of breakfast and brunch items as it was a little later in the morning. Their house hot sauces were all delicious too! My wife and I had dinner there tonight the food was good but the waiter who waited on us was rude and didn't and clearly didn't understand what it means to be a waiter. If that wasn't bad enough we got an apple and a berry cobbler to go. The apple was made with applesauce instead of aples the berry cobbler had hardly any filling in it. I really enjoy Black Bear as a place to grab a delicious breakfast. They have a wide selection of food and drinks as well which I really appreciate! The Food is always in bigger portions, and very filling. Everything is decorated with bears, from the plates to the walls to outside of the restaurant! This particular time I went, the service was not great, we only saw our server three times when she said hi, gave us our drinks, and brought us the check (someone else brought the food). We waited for 45 minutes for the food. I would give four stars for that, however that's usually the exception. The rule is that Blackbear servers are nice, quick, and caring. One of us ordered the Taco Salad which comes with your choice of ground beef, grilled or fried chicken. They have a fish and chips plate that's all you can eat for $14.99 if you order frozen fish. For $1 more you get fresh fish but just 1 plate. I opted for the fresh. That did seem strange to me. The door was missing from a stall in the ladies room. The water had a strange taste I sent the fish back and got some that was still over done. I think that even though I paid a dollar extra for fresh fish it was actually frozen. I am from Minnesota and had not heard of Black Bear Diner which as now I understand is a Northern California chain. My daughter who does live in California took us here and we were very happy with the experience. Service is sit down but you pay at the register which is sort of unusual these days. Food was good and quantities were copious to say the least. I am originally from Texas and consider myself an expert on chicken fried steak. Went to this location for dinner while we're in town, we were seated promptly and asked for drinks. The host brought us drinks and told us our server would be over soon. We needed a little time to check out the menu, our waitress came over and introduced herself to us. She was very friendly and polite. The restaurant wasn't too full when we arrived but quite a few more tables were filled while we were there. The restaurant wasnt too loud, we could have a conversation. The restaurant was decorated in many bear themed items. They had a small gift shop near the register. Some of the staff were kind of hanging around betting on who would order what etc. and werent paying attention to the chefs. The cooks had to have the host take items to the tables because of this. Our server was pretty on top of things, got our food out quickly and got our order correctly and checked on us often. I appreciated the ample parking and the signage reminding guests to be cautious of potential car break-ins. it's thoughtful and proactive. The interior was clean, well kept, and inviting. Service was attentive and pleasant; our server James was exceptionally kind and helpful throughout our visit. He's a standout and brings genuine warmth to the dining experience. I ordered the pot roast after seeing a photo of it on Yelp, but unfortunately, it didn't meet expectations. The dish appeared and tasted as though it had not been freshly prepared. It was noticeably dry and lacked any sauce aside from a ladle of gravy seemingly intended for the mashed potatoes. I attempted to improve the flavor with hot sauce, but I was unable to finish the meal. I respectfully urge management to review the quality control around this item. Serving freshly prepared food should always be a priority. At its current state, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending the pot roast to others. Once again, James was excellent, and I truly hope he continues providing the same level of customer care. Sweet potato fries were much better. An add on was only $0.99 and it was a lot! If you like biscuits, they are about the size of baseballs here. Zero stars if I could. Mark came off nice for five seconds--until I dared to ask for a simple meal modification due to a food allergy. That's when the eye rolls and huffing started. I took a trip to northern California and Redding just happened to be near my destination. I was so delighted to find this place. I have been to several sister restaurants and this place has the same friendly vibes. The place was very clean. The counters looked very neat and orderly. I found the staff to be very friendly. I am on a quest to visit every Black Bear Diner. I started in Santa Maria, then Emeryville, and now Redding. It was important I get to visit the two very first diners that were built up North in Shasta and Redding. I admit I like the old feel to this diner and the old photos that were taken when it first opened in 1997. The staff stood out for telling funny jokes to the customers. Black Bear Diner is by far the best breakfast restaurant in Redding, California. It feels like a little piece of old-school Americana that I hope always remains. I love Hannah!!! My recommendation: two people should split one ScramBOWL (spelled just like that). Skip the ham and substitute extra crispy bacon--it's absolutely heavenly. The manager, Jim, is a kind and excellent gentleman. If you order on DoorDash and happen to be out of ketchup at home, he makes sure you get plenty. Austin, the young man who answered the phone, was polite, professional, and a class act as well. Both of them went above and beyond--Redding is lucky to have them. Five stars across the board. Specifically went on a Friday, arrived about 5:30 and overheard worker tell others to not order any more fish because they were out. Billboards on the highway, Friday is the only night for unlimited fish, and they can't have enough to serve people for an hour and a half (specifically says the deal starts at 4pm on Friday) Seems really odd to rub out right away. The server suggested writing this review. If they are going to run out of a special so quickly maybe offer an alternative like unlimited chicken strips or similar, or better yet, just order more. Great breakfast menu and amazing biscuits! Nice people good service. 1 very annoying issue is employees using the overflow dining room to make VERY LOUD PERSONAL phone calls. We experienced 2 employees at separate times bring the phones into the dining area and sit at the table near us and shout into their phones. Very unprofessional and off putting.
