The food is great, and it's a really fun place. That said, a lot of things about the establishment don't really make sense. It's a large space, but the seating feels awkwardly arranged and surprisingly limited for the size of the room. There's also a side room with plenty of seating that, for some reason, always seems to be closed off. They could easily be serving twice the volume, but choose not to. They also have a liquor license, yet they close at 9:30, even on Fridays and weekends. And speaking of the liquor license, you'd think it was a beer-only spot because there's basically no indication that they make mixed drinks or cocktails. Overall, it just feels like a place with a lot of strange business choices. I'm always disappointed when Maxwell's sounds like the perfect place to go, then I check the time and realize it's 9 p.m. on a Friday, which somehow already feels too late. A decent find for a pizza craving while staying in Redding for the evening. It was a bit more if a dive than I expected. The entrance with the bar could use more decor. There was a second room we didn't see because of a private party. Service wasn't great but always polite and with a smile. Drinks were limited (alcoholic and non) and they are out of our first app selection. The pizza made up for what was lacking in ambiance though. I'm not a fan of fried zucchini made their way, but perhaps others would love it. Parking was around the back of the block. Maxwells on a Thursday is a great deal if you want a half price pizza. This is definitely worth trying. However, choose your pizza carefully. They all sound good but I didn't love all my choices. I tried the savory sweet pork (apple and pork belly) which was only so-so, the Brie and ham, which was better but still not quite there, and the balsamic steak, which hit the spot. Service was extremely slow, which normally I don't mind, but this was extra extra slow. The ambience is kind of plain as well. There is plenty of parking on the street and around the general vicinity. You won't have issues finding parking in Redding. The restaurant is clean and comfortable. It can be good for groups if you call ahead. It's a casual setting but not too loud, so it's a great place to meetup with friends. Maxwell's would also be a great place to stop if you're passing through town looking to stop at a comfortable place for a good meal, or want to catch a game on the screen. The bathrooms are spacious and clean. Try the buffalo blue fries and tatchos! The garlic chicken pizza is delicious. This place used to be really solid but it's gone to hell lately. The all black interior is kind of worn and dated looking. In part, that's because it's dusty and worn. The bench seating of the booths is cracked or caving in--it's not comfortable. The food shows the same lack of care. My son and I ordered sandwiches which should never have been allowed out of the kitchen. The buns were burned to a crisp. The meat in my burger was just as dry--it was an inedible burnt puck. Maybe it's because we were hungry, maybe it's because Maxwell's was a short drive (10 mins walk; 4 mins by car and it was raining so, yeah, car), maybe it's because they serve Rogue Hazelnut Spiced Rum in a fantastic modern take on a mai tai that made us forget all the sugary mai tais we've delightfully downed in the past, maybe it's because the staff was friendly, attentive AND offered suggestions of libations + food combos based on the flavors we were craving, and maaaaybe, just maybe, it was because the pizza I had was insanely filled with delicious herbs and packed with veggies AND came with a side of ranch dressing without asking, but all those maybes were just too much to not reward Maxwell's! Terry is the bubbly, fun, knowledgeable server who made suggestions after bringing us menus as our butts hit the high top stools. We each went with their on tap cider offerings, one a crisp dry apple, the other a somewhat sweet cherry/apple. Both were good - BUT! - afffter we ordered, I noticed their cocktail list and saw they have a mai tai made with Rogue Hazelnut Spiced Rum. That, somewhat ;), brought back memories of a fun drinking visit to the Rogue brewery in Portland years ago when we first tasted this spirit in root beer. (sigh....digressing as my Member Berries kick in...). AAAAANYwho, we ordered the Maxwell's Mai Tai($8) promptly and were rewarded with a light, refreshing, easy to sip modern take on the usually sugary sweet concoction inspired decades ago by friends of the infamous Trader Vic, who described the drink to him upon returning from a Polynesian vacation. It still packed some spirit, but was delicious. THEN our piping hot small, 9", pizzas($14/ea) arrived with a container of ranch dressing. I had just heard Megan Thee Stallion talk about ranch w/pizza being a Texas thing 'y'all HAVE to try', so I was all in. My Garlic Chicken w/white sauce and MASS veggies(artichoke, tomato, mushrooms & zucchini) would have been excellent without the ranch, but dipping all that lusciousness into the creamy, perfect dressing was...was...was...perfecter(????) - lol! Yup, I'm a believer. Hubby really enjoyed his personalized ham w/extra cheese pizza w/o the ranch addition. I thought a small pizza would be a cinch to chow down, but both of us switched to "pace yourself mode" to finish. With all those veggies on mine, I easily could have shared the small. Alas, the only vegetable my husband consumes is a fried french, so he wanted nothing to do with my garden based pie. We thoroughly enjoyed our time, service, drinks and food at Maxwell's Eatery and were happy Yelp was wrong about their hours and Maxwell's being closed on a Sunday. They are VERY MUCH OPEN. Like a lot of folks, we were passing through Redding while on the way to Portland and it was lunch time. A gastropub like Maxwells was the perfect choice. I had what was considered an amazing burger cooked perfectly. The beer batter onion rings were also perfect. The BLT had lots of bacon and was awesome. The service was quick and the server was great. Let's start by saying this place has great food & service. We came in with 9 people and the let us sit in a closed section instead of crammed on a table with some barstools and we appreciated that. We spent all day on Lake Shasta in the heat and we were starving! We order Garlic cheese bread, fried pickles, jalapeños & cheese curds to start. My son ordered a cheese pizza, the wife ordered the Ham & Brie pizza "her new favorite pizza" and sriracha lime wings & I ordered the Pastrami and Swiss pizza with some buffalo wings. Our party also got a good assortment, Volcano wings (he couldn't finish) biria calzone & a Philly cheesesteak, all of us left fat & happy. Tried again - mailbox is full. Gave another 5 minutes - mailbox is full. One more 5 minutes pause - mailbox is full. You know where this is going. Guess they don't know how to manage voicemail boxes. Maybe its burner phone. It would have been nice to have a recording saying - "our hours are XXXX" or "sorry we are closed today". Not hard to do. Used the online menu to order a pizza to go. Unfortunately upon arrival we found that they'd prepared the wrong pizza (pineapple??? yikes!), one that wasn't even on their menu. Visited 5/18/2018 Across the street from the Thunderbird hotel this little bar and grill is a great place to hang out have a beer and enjoy a Quick to much. The food was 4 1/2 Stars. The service was 5 Stars. Sadly they only have beer and wine. If it was a full-service bar this would be a five star bar and grill. Well worth a visit if you're in the Reading area. We were staying at the Thunderbird Lodge across the street and didn't get into town until 10 pm. We were hungry and looking for a place that had an open kitchen. We walked into Maxwells around 10:30 and the bartender said we could order any pizza off of the menu even though they were technically closed. What a kind gesture for two weary travelers! We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of pints, along with a Thai pizza to share. Man, oh man. That Thai pizza now ranks among my favorites. Just by looking at it, you probably couldn't tell that it's a Thai pizza. It has chicken breast, red and green bell peppers and onions. It looks like a regular chicken and veggie pizza, but take one bite and there's no denying that you've just tasted something special. The crust has a savory sweetness to it. Add the house-made peanut sauce and sweet chili and you have a Bangkok party for your taste buds. Five stars for the food. Five stars for the beer.
