The service was 5 Stars. Sadly they only have beer and wine. If it was a full-service bar this would be a five star bar and grill. Well worth a visit if you're in the Reading area. We were staying at the Thunderbird Lodge across the street and didn't get into town until 10 pm. We were hungry and looking for a place that had an open kitchen. We walked into Maxwells around 10:30 and the bartender said we could order any pizza off of the menu even though they were technically closed. What a kind gesture for two weary travelers! We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of pints, along with a Thai pizza to share. Man, oh man. That Thai pizza now ranks among my favorites. Just by looking at it, you probably couldn't tell that it's a Thai pizza. It has chicken breast, red and green bell peppers and onions. It looks like a regular chicken and veggie pizza, but take one bite and there's no denying that you've just tasted something special. The crust has a savory sweetness to it. Add the house-made peanut sauce and sweet chili and you have a Bangkok party for your taste buds. Five stars for the food. Five stars for the beer. This place has a super divey feel to it. It was Saturday night, and they were pretty busy, but the staff was attentive and friendly. The food was surprisingly better than I expected. The pizza was perfectly cooked and flavorful, and the wings were tangy and not too spicy. I ate the whole pizza, so that's saying something I think (to my credit, it was a small). Somebody smoked weed in the bathroom which was kind of a turn off, but not to the fault of the restaurant. I would eat there again for sure. read more

This place has tasty pub food and I wish I could give a bunch of recommendations as to what to try, but all I can comment on is every single flavor of their wings, the favorite being lemon pepper. Not what you would probably pick as the first choice, because there are many flavors to choose from, but oh my lord are they the best things ever! This is from Someone who isn't even a huge wing fan. I regularly order 18 lemon pepper wings to go, take them Home, and barely share with my fiancé and son. They get, maybe, 2. That's it! The rest are for me and don't ask me to share. I know things are tough for restaurants with COVID happening. However, Maxwell's didn't seem to be trying all that hard. Given that the county next door (Lassen) is the #1 hot spot in the state for new cases, I'd hope for more. My family ordered take out (we didn't think dine-in was even an option). The person on the phone was friendly, shared options, told me what they had for drinks (only two wines left and not much variety in beer, but we get it--COVID). We placed our order and went to pick it up. Upon entering, I noticed four people at the bar, at least two bartenders, neither wearing a mask and no plexiglass to be seen as a barrier. Four additional people were seated inside at a table in the bar area despite indoor dining being barred statewide as of July 13th. No customers wore masks. The woman who delivered my food wore a mask, but I am wondering if the cooks who cooked my food wore a mask since the bartenders making drinks were not. The food...We had the veggie bowl with chicken which traveled well and I liked it (with balsamic). Someone in my party had the spicy jalapeño burger which did not travel as well and definitely did not look like the picture. Finally, we had the Cobb salad which hardly had any lettuce and the lettuce didn't seem fresh but the other parts of the salad were good. read more

GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE I actually placed my order thru Grubhub.. and the restaurant forgot my salad dressing. Typically a restaurant wouldn't do anything in that situation.. kinda just sucks for you. When I first called Maxwells they apologized profusely but said they couldn't do anything and to call Grubhub. There is no number for customer service in the app that I could find. I was pretty frustrated because who wants to eat a salad without dressing. Well the manager called me back and said they can have someone drop off the dressing. Yay!!! Good job guys. A group of us started going to Maxwell's every week a few years ago and enjoyed their food, beer and great service. Our last few trips have been lackluster. The food is still typically good, but has lost it's consistency, and the servers don't to really care that you are there. I really miss going to Maxwell's and getting volcano wings (they are seriously hot) or the Ring of Fire burger. But I don't know if I'm going to get lit up by the burger or wonder if they put their hot sauce on it at all.... I haven't seen the owners there lately, or they sold and I don't recognize them. We'll be back, and maybe more consistently.... maybe we caught them on a couple of tough nights. read more

They have an extensive burger menu and will tweak it any way you want it. I got the bacon avocado bleu burger but asked the burger to be with cheddar instead. Not a problem. Also had the maxwell burger that comes with peanut butter (person in the party was too scared to try with PB). All burgers come with fries (amazing- really crispy), tots, salad or pasta or onion rings (yum) bacon cheese fries, garlic and pesto fries for an additional 99 cents. They also have some draft beer on tab- be sure to ask the server about them. They were priced between $5-7, which is more reasonable than some other craft beers that charge $11 or more per glass (crazy!!!). We go here. A L O T. Half price burgers, bike races on the big screen in the back room, the occasional live music night. Cental location, always great beer and a great mix of customers. Families, firefighters, lawyers, chiropractors, construction workers, scientists, writers, I've met them all here. They can accommodate large parties with advanced notice (10 or more). Has been well known for great burgers, beer, and pizza. In my experience, service can be sketchy and often comes with a bit of a tude unless you jibe with their vibe. Used to eat here regularly, but recent experiences have me wondering if quality control has waned a bit. You know, that thing that often happens after a place gets popular. While you're not going to get a bad meal, I don't think the food and beer makes up for the skant service anymore. I find myself struggling to justify more than the minimum tip. If you aren't a millennial hipster but care about good service then I might recommend another more fresh and friendly local brew pub experiences. We heard burgers were half price on Tuesdays with the purchase of a beer. We seated ourselves and ordered burgers and brew. I had their suggested IPA along with a Green Chili Chipotle Burger. This place had great service as well as great food. Danny had the phillycheese steak with steak fries. I had the French dip with steak fries. They both came with individual ranch dressing in containers which was thoughtful. all the beers on tap change frequently so they had no list. Maxwell's gets an A++++. My wife and I eat here every time we pass through Redding on the way up to and back from Washington, which is 4 to 6 times a year. The service is always great and the food the same... For all of you out there complaining about the lack of masks, go somewhere else. The employees I encounter are always wearing masks and if they weren't , I'd still eat there. People seem to forget that you are more likely to die from an auto accident, drug overdose, heart disease, or cancer than from COVID-19. So please stop rating restaurants on subjective and oppressive rules and start rating them on their food and customer service... read more
