It looks like most of the local 5 Guy's (5G) destinations are averaging 3 stars, seems there are a lot of In-N-Out (I-N-O) fans who knock them down out of loyalty. Well, that's not me. I'm at a 3 because that's where I think they should be, and that's about where I-N-O would be also, (maybe 3.5 for them) Both OK, not my first choice for a fast food burger, but sometimes location dictates your choice - there's an I-N-O very close to my workplace. Reviewing after my second visit. 1st time was to go, this time ate in. Really wasn't that impressed after first trip, but unless I am really unhappy with a place I like to take a second look, especially when giving a less than a 4 star review. Places I rate as 3's are places that I don't really have any desire to go back to, but may occasionally out of necessity or convenience. So many 4's and 5's to visit or new places to check out - don't really want to waste the calories, $ or time on a 3!! Since 5G is a direct competitor to I-N-O's share of the market, and most readers have been to I-N-O, comparisons make sense for reviewing purposes. That will be the context of my review. Pros: Many more choices to build your burger your way, including bacon, BBQ sauce and A1. Hot Dogs are available as well. There is an option for a larger or smaller burger, but the large one is not what I would call big. Burger taste was fine. Ingredients seem fresh. Service was good, open kitchen, place was kept clean. They have complimentary peanuts to snack on while you wait for your order. 5G has my wife's soda - Sprite Zero - so that's a plus. Malt vinegar available also. Cons: Value for the price is not good - 2 burgers, 2 drinks and share one order of fries = $20. Fries were not good, I don't know what it is, they should be good - fresh potatoes, natural cut - but they have no taste really. I-N-O fries are much better. No drive through available. I found the decor to be kind of annoying - all these giant signs - with quotes from reviews - from the press printed in big red letters. They are everywhere - it's kind of like they are trying to convince me how great they are, why? - I'm already in there. It's a little obnoxious and a poor decorative choice. I would suggest one wall/area to display all of their accolades in a classy way. Overall - 5G burger and choices mean a better burger than I-N-O, but the price and terrible fries are big negatives that mean I am not planning to return for a third time. What were you (five) guys thinking?! You're playing an away game in die-hard In-N-Out fan territory and losing pretty badly. Food: My visit to the Katella location was the first of my two trips to Five Guys (the second probably being my last). When you enter, you'll notice bags and bags of spices and shelled peanuts piled high as decorations. When you order, you are given a choice of different toppings including mushrooms, onions, mayo, jalapenos, and various condiments. Once you take it out of the wrapper and pick it up, expect a dozen things to fall out of the back as if your burger was taking a dump. I would like to concur with the previous reviewers that this place does not stack up to In-And-Out burger. The patties, buns and toppings are not as tasty and fresh as In-And-Out. Maybe it isn't fair to compare this place to In-And-Out, which, lets be honest, is the 800 pound gorilla of the Hamburger game. But Five Guys begs for the comparison. The open kitchen, the simple(ish) menu, and the employee's uniforms will all remind you of In-And-Out burger. Even the pattern on the tile on the dining room wall is the same! Very weird, very weird. The fries are ok. Again, not as good as N-N-Out, but ok. And Five Guys gives away free peanuts, so hey, take a few. But don't be trashy like the guy I saw who came in with his daughter and got a to go order and on his way out dumped like six little bowls of peanuts into his to go bag with the burgers and fries! C'Mon bro, seriously? Really, the decor and everything else reminded me so much of In-And-Out burger, I expected it to be better then it was. But by the time I finished my lunch I felt like I was sitting in a Nissan dealership that had Ferrari posters all over the walls. I really really hate hype killers, and people that love to go against the stream...but I might have to side with them on this one. If I could summarize my experience here in 3 letters, it would probably be: huh. Exactly that. In my opinion, when a restaurant hangs over 50 signs around the room praising their food, then I expect some good quality stuff. However, this was definitely not the case. I was amazed by how many toppings they had to go on your burger. Mushrooms, grilled onions, bacon etc. When I got my burger, I realized how big of a mistake it was getting it "fully loaded". To be quite blunt, I felt gross eating their food. My hands were covered in a mixture of ketchup, mustard and oil. The patty itself tasted very bland...as if it were plain unseasoned beef. Lettuce was everywhere but inside the sandwich, and it seemed as though my burger had suffered a bullet wound and was leaking all over the place. When we got our fries, they were very soggy (not sure if thats the quality that got them the great Zagat reviews). And it didn't taste too Cajun to me...just seemed like some potatoes diced up mixed with spicy cup-o-noodle powder...at least thats what it smelled like... The whole time we were eating, I kept reading the numerous signs that covered the walls. I couldn't understand why they had gotten such great reviews...until I figured it out! Kansas, Washington DC, Virginia....these guys have NEVER had In-N-Out before. They have never tasted the great consistent sandwich from California! Meh City. When I spend $11 dollars on a regular Kosher Dog, some fries, and a small soda, I expect a lot more flavor, better service (with a smile maybe?), and maybe some other options available (peppers, etc) for the dog. Again, we're talking $11 for a hot dog that tasted like it was a Weinerschnitzel dog, a cup (bag) of fries (which I ended up giving to the homeless), and a small fountain drink. In all honesty, Sonic's dogs tasted better. I understand you have to offset the price for the peanuts people eat here, but I wasn't impressed. I am not a HUGE In-N-Out freak either, but I find them much healthier, tastier, and sadly friendlier than the folks I encountered here. No one was outright rude, again, it just wasn't an $11 dollar experience. Also, I'm not a fan of everything being bagged to-go, only to have me rip the bag open and trash half the contents so that I can eat there -- I find that wasteful and kinda bum my. Oh, and I did ask what came on the hot dog and if they had Chicago Dogs here and the older guy (older than most everyone else that worked here) running the register kind of looked at me like I was crazy for not knowing how to order at the no-options, no substitutions Five Guys franchise. Is this really what it's come to? Not impressed -- I'll stick to the grocery store and making my own lunch at this rate. Ok I don't want to waste your time and repeat what everyone has said. But I can't help but agree. Prices are steep for what you get. The burgers aren't bad, but compared to In N Out, I would choose In N Out any day. I did like their pickles, though. Thick, tart, and sweet! Plus, the prices aren't the only steep thing there. This particular location is one of the worst five guys around. 25 minute ticket times for 2 burgers and one order of fries, that I paid $40 for. There was one employee that had a black hat on, appeared to be shift leader or something similar, he's a keeper. Everyone else on shift tonight should definitely be fired. I witnessed a room full of disgruntled customers that were being ignored. The young boy making the fries, and his buddy who he was always chatting with, were by far the worst. I saw them yell out customers numbers, place the food on the counter and then turn their back as customers are asking questions. Anyone who is focused on delivering a great customer experience should really take a look at the crew working on evening of 1/14. The weirdest part is that the register asks you for a tip, odd for fast food, but I tipped anyways. Worst decision. Needless to say I am never coming back to this location. I'd give it 3.5, because come on - bacon is totally worth half a star on it's own! Look, I am a So Cal native and I will admit that I grew up loving In-N-Out. That being disclosed, I also love a good burger and am always on the lookout for something new to try. When I first heard about Five Guys and the challenge it was going to bring to the doorstep of In-N-Out, I just had to get down there and sample it. After all, if there is a better fast food burger than In-N-Out, then I am a fan! Well, after trying Five Guy, I can tell you not to buy in to the hype. This is not In-N-Out. Five Guys is a solid alternative, but it won't dethrone In-N-Out as a guilty pleasure to my discerning, cheeseburger-craving taste buds. Five Guys offers solid ingredients, each is fresh and high quality, as is the beef patty itself. However, it is missing something to tie it all in together. Maybe it is sauce or seasoning, I don't know. What I do know is that it tastes like a quality homemade burger, but unlike In-N-Out, it doesn't meld together in to a singular, perfect balance of taste. With In-N-Out, the flavor is greater than the sum of its parts, with Five Guys, each of those parts tastes like quality individual pieces. The other element propagandized by the hype machine were the fries. In-N-Out's fries have always been controversial and if there is a place to make inroads against the stalwart, fries is where you start. Unfortunately, mine were soft, somewhat soggy, and lacked seasoning. Frankly they tasted like under-cooked potatoes, so needless to say it was one of the most disappointing elements of the meal, despite being the part I looked forward to the most. My friend Nathan brought me here a few weeks ago when we both decided to take a day off work. For a Friday afternoon this place was packed. We lucked up and grabbed a table as soon as someone stood up from it. I was excited to have some bacon cheeseburger all up in my life, and I especially liked the fact that this place is almost like "build your own burger"... so it totally wasn't weird when I only wanted meat, bacon, and cheese. The burger was a good size, and it was topped with tons of bacon. It was nice and juicy, and definitely enough to fill me up. We split an order of fries, which ended up being a great idea since there were tons. And for as crowded as this place was, it didn't take long to get our food, which was really my only worry. I don't think I'd compare this place to In-N-Out though. They each have their own charm and completely different tasting food. But I know there are hardcore fans on both sides of this story. My friend and I walk into Five Guys, expecting something amazing, and we are greeted by a tacky-looking joint (I personally hate when places obnoxiously attempt to sell themselves w/ reviews), peanut shells all over the floor with boxes of shipments/supplies all over the place. I almost don't understand it, because there were at least 3 employees walking around, sweeping the floor. But hey, I'm here for the food right? We finally get our food...and it disappointed me. ME...someone who (can) eat stale foods and (can) drink chunky soy milk. For one, the burger was poorly assembled. My toppings kept falling out, they cheated me on my onions, my friend's grilled cheese kept falling out; they didnt take the time to completely melt it on the bun. As for taste, it was mediocre. Maybe it was the thousand island-type sauce that In-N-Out uses, but my burger was missing some essential flavor (which I still haven't been able to figure out.) As for their fries...it was if someone had heated up frozen fries from the grocery store & then dumped the seasoning that comes in cheap, Asian ramen packages all over it. I've been hearing things about Five Guys recently and when I saw my buddy Arnold's review and realized there was one near me I had to try it! (no matter what Arnold said haha). :P Some reviews were saying that we can't compare to In & Out? So what do you expect me to compare this place to? 25 degrees? The Counter? Slaters 50/50, Fathers Office? Ummm this place looks like an In & Out when you walk in....what cha talking about, "you can't compare it to In & Out?" Even the cups look similar. I just read the burgers are hand shaped? They looked and tasted like a regular burger like In & Out. shrugs. Burger is good...very comparable to In & Out. I have no issues with the taste....but for price it's $1 more than I want to spend. I had the everything burger minus mushrooms, add jalapenos. Arghhhh yeah I wish it was wrapped in something as it was dripping everywhere. The bread did fall apart and made it hard to eat. Otherwise like I said it was good just like In & Out. (I did like the cheese a tad better than In & Out's). I also ordered the cajun fries. I do like the cut of the fries, but again I would appreciate it at $1 less. My meal was like $8 or so without a drink. hmmmmm me no like. I'd give it 4 stars, but for what I got I think I was paying a little too much. Not to nickel and dime the price, but to me its not a gourmet style burger, yet very comparable to In & Out yet a little pricier, then a slightly lower rating. Alright alright, put all your wet dreams of describing xxx-rated situations and group things etc. temporarily aside. I know it'll be difficult, but I'm sure I'm not the first Yelper to giggle about this and I'm fairly certain I won't be the last! Everything is so different from that ~other~ burger joint so many people compare Five Guys with, that I'm not even going to bother with a line-by-line comparison in my review. But I will describe what it is I specifically love about Five Guys. You really can't go wrong with the peanuts and the old school burger joint feel of the place. The menu is strangely simple, with a few outside offerings like hot dogs. BUT WHY?!??!! The burger is truly where it's at. You get the outstanding option to slather on whatever toppings you want off their extensive list. But alas! This is no backwoods down-home all you can muster to stack on your paper plate affair. The Five Guys people REALLY know what they are doing. I've seen people just ordering up the wazoo with toppings, and then I see their orders come out -- and, being the naughty cheeky little monkey I am, I just wanna see everything fall apart! Sadly... this hasn't happened yet. Five Guys realllllly knows how to put together a solid, stable burger. Hmm, impressive. A regular old 'burger' has two patties. The 'little' version has one patty. Be forewarned. I usually go for a sumptuous combination of some or all of these toppings: mayo, relish, ketchup, cheese, A-1, jalapenos, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, raw onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and once I even got hot sauce. (Totally worth it btw.) Cajun fries, absolute must. If it becomes too salty then order a side of regular fries, toss together in your trusty paper bag and go to town. Thank me later. The burger is SO fresh when it gets to you -- it is piping hot, and again the toppings blend together to not completely overwhelm or destroy the burger -- and the bag is filled to the hilt with fries. What a waste of time and money. First they got my order wrong. I wanted a burger with onions, mushrooms and tomato. It says so right on my receipt. I got lettuce, tomato and bacon. Never mind. how were the burgers? Nothing to write home about. Not worth $4. And I don't know what kind of fries you people on the east coast eat, but I don't consider soggy fries good fries. Well done In N Out are better. The buns tasted stale yet soggy. Zagat is obviously written by a bunch of liars if you think these guys are better than In N Out. I've been eating five guys for the past 10 years- both on the east coast and now in California. Wait wait wait... that didn't come out the way I meant it. In any case, I've never had a bad experience until this past Saturday. The burger patty was overcooked to the consistency and texture of a hockey puck (think almost crunchy). Fries were bland (Stick to the Cajun fries- the regular fries were fairly tasteless). Chalk it up to being insanely busy- the line that literally went out the door and wrapped around the building. Or maybe they are still working out the kinks (this location has only been open a month). Whatever the excuse, the end result was quite poor. In fact, if this would have been my first visit to a Five Guys, I can safely say I would never return. I honestly remember Five Guys being so much better in Atlanta. I like that I got the choice of putting whatever I wanted on my burger, but the presentation was so poor. Quick & Dirty: Decent Burgers and pretty good fries. I'm not ready to hand over In-n-Out's crown just yet though. Long & Juicy: Five Guys burgers are good, pretty darn good actually. It's difficult to compare them to In-n-Out though (as many do) when they have completely different flavors altogether, but I'm going to compare them anyway. In-n-Out has a tangy zip to their burgers that I can taste in my mouth even when I just think about one. Five guys has a juicy burger but an "everything" burger gets you a butt load of crap that I don't usually get on my burgers. I can't remember right now a specific flavor that stands out in my mind. The inside of this Five Guys is bland. No pictures, artwork, plants, nothing. Just signs stating how great their burgers are and quotes from reviews around the country bragging about the food. It's almost like they have to brainwash you into thinking how great their burgers are. The service here is alright. They were nice enough but seemed very rushed and for how rush they acted it took a very very long time to get my food (20 Minutes!). This is not fast food, at all. In my mind I can think of other places that have burgers that are just as good if not better. Fatburger, Fuddruckers, In-n-Out, just to name a few. I'd eat any of those burgers first before I ate another Five Guys burger. Would I go here again? Sure. But I don't think I'll get a craving like i do for In-n-Out. Should you go here? To compare this place to In-N-Out is WRONG. Putting the two together causes people to think that Five Guys is better than it actually is. My friend and I finally decided to try this place after hearing so much about it over the past few years... I had the little bacon cheeseburger. I added mushrooms, mayo, and jalapenos to it. The burger was solid. The bacon was actually pretty tasty. All in all, I think I put together a decent burger. However, the fries at this place are crap! Drove all the way to OC for Five Guys who I don't even know... Upon entering... This place looks like In-n-Out except they free peanuts up for grab! The menu's simple enough but the way to add toppings to the burger needs a little explanation from the cashier. The burger's delicous... the pickles especially taste fresh and crunchy. I really like this burger! I think it's a little expensive though. For two burger, a small drink, and a small fries, it came out to be about $18+. This place is an upgraded version of In- N- Out which I considered the worst burger around. I think I prefer Five Guys over In-N-Out but still think that Five guys is overrated. I had high expectations and thought they were going to offer something different. If they are going to offer toppings then they should do it right and add more selection. They burger was just decent The bun - It was melted with the burger, it was so soggy definitely didn't have any consistency. The patty - Didn't have any flavor, it was like it was just cooked in a pan and not on the grill. The fries - They were super fresh out of the fryer but even though they look golden brown and were fresh, they were soggy and not crunchy at all. How is that possible? The Hot Dogs - Grilled hot dog inside a bun, what's so special about it? Nothing. I will say don't bother to order and waste your money if you are only going to have Hot dogs at this place, go to a place that just specializes on Hot dogs only. Watch out, In-N-Out, Five Guys also knows what a hamburgers' all about. It's natural to compare Five Guys to In-N-Out. While they originated on opposite coasts, both feature made to order hamburgers and fanatical followings. I grew up waiting in long drive thru lines for In-N-Out. Part of the whole mystique was that they had lines and lines of people waiting for their product. Few meals are as satisfying as a Double-Double and fries. In-N-Out burgers can have a pile of succulent grilled onions buried in cheese, topping two well seasoned beef patties, all inside perfectly toasted buns with thousand island spread. The lettuce and tomatoes always crisp and fresh. I love In-N-Out as much as any warm blooded Californian, but there are detractors. The meat patties are small in the age of third pound patties. The sauce can sometimes sog the meat. And the fries, while great when done right, are often soggy and limp. My wife and dad will eat In-N-Out, but they don't choose it. Enter Five Guys. Like Fatburger, there are a dizzing array of free toppings: grilled onions, grilled mushrooms are among the many you won't see elsewhere. You get peanuts in the shell to munch on while waiting. The meat we had was well seasoned and cooked: a slight char on the outside, juicy on the inside with just a slight hint of pink. More importantly, there's a lot more meat in the patties. Beef flavor was well developed. "cheeseburger" means two big patties at Five Guys, and means one smaller patty at In-N-Out. Advantage: Five Guys. Toppings: many more choices, but the lettuce and tomato were a little sloppy, and thin. Not the cool crispness I'm used to. Grilled onions were good, but I miss that thousand spread. The aluminum foil wrapping carries heat longer, but sogs the lettuce and bread quickly. Advantage: wash. In-N-Out for freshness, but Five Guys for variety. Bread: A larger bun for the larger patties, gently toasted. But In-N-Out has toasted buns down to a science. Advantage: In-N-Out Atmosphere: they sign goofy songs like Cold Stone and Cafe Rio. Appreciated, but doesn't count for me. Fries: Both use fresh potatoes. In-n-out does shoestrings. Five Guys are beefier steak fry cuts. Ours were Cajun seasoned and fluffy. In-N-Outs look better, but the double fry of five guys got it right: Slight crunch on the outside, fluffy baked potato texture on the inside. As with the meat, the fries were incredibly generous in portions. Everyone's got a different preference for fries, but IMO, Advantage: Five guys. Cost: We were out $14 for two, with just one order of fries and no sodas. In-N-Out is clearly cheaper. Advantage: In-N-Out Value: probably a dead heat. you pay more, you get more. Car-eating: In-N-Out would be relatively easier to eat in the car. They even give you a cardboard box to eat out of. Aluminum foil is just not conducive. Both have high drip-risk; you eat either at your own peril while driving. Locations: In-n-out has a 50 year head start in Southern California. In-N-out is 10 minutes from my house, the nearest five guys is 30. And the one in Orange isn't even a drive-thru. Advantage: In-N-Out Overall: Don't run me out of town, but Five Guys (narrowly) wins my vote for best fast food burger. Not an In-N-Out Killer, but a solid alternative for most, and a better choice for many...especially if you're really hungry. Location will keep me eating at In-N-out more. Not sure what's so special about Five Guys. It costs much more than In-N-Out but it doesn't have the freshness and not as tasty. This sounds extreme, but the burger I had kinda reminds me of am/pm burgers that are all wrapped up in foil. I ordered a cheeseburger but they didn't mention that I was going to get double patty; I'm more of a single patty man, so I was a bit irked. Maybe the little cheeseburger is what I was supposed to order? Anyways, the burger wasn't the worst, but it wasn't that good; just average at best. Their over-seasoned cajun fries were okay. So this place has been all the talk since they opened up shop. "In n Out's competition!" proclaimed the papers! I finally succumbed to the pressure and tried the place out. I was highly disappointed, the hoopla was just that...Hoopla. One would think this place was serving burgers delivered straight from heaven judging from the the line out the door. "Heaven served on a bun" proclaims a poster hanging on the wall. Well I must beg to differ. First of all the flow of the place is frustrating. Sure the line to order moved quickly but then everyone and their mother stand in the middle of the restaurant waiting for their order to be called which caused a traffic jam and confusion as I tried to make my way to the soda and ketchup bar. I could not even throw away a napkin with out bumping in to some dude waiting for his burger. He was in a mindless daze as if he just emerged from death valley and this was going to be his first meal! Come on people! It's a burger! And it's from DC! Does ANYTHING good come from DC? The efficiency of the In N Out process is a testament that the place was born in the home of the Car Culture. This place was most certainly not. The dining room is crowded but it is also in In N Out so no big deal. But this place puts little emphasis on cleanliness. The counters and table tops were sticky. This is NEVER the case at In N Out no matter how busy it is. The wait for your order is long but they supply you with peanuts. Cool, but then messy floors prevail. Which is okay for a BBQ place and Phillipes but not a burger place. The prices? Well they are much more expensive than In N Out. For the price of the #1 Combo at In N Out, you get ONE burger here. Then $2.99 for fries and $2 for a drink. At this rate, the burger combo at Marie Callendars is sounding better (and is). Now for the burger. Our order, 2 burgers, 1 hot dog, 1 large fries, came in a bag. Not a tray. So it was a hassle to get to everything and it seemed like a waste of a thick brown paper bag. Not that I am a greeny but, come on! Right away I noticed the burger is heavy. A possible good sign of things to come. The fries looked delish and there was a board on the wall telling you where the potatoes came from that day. Some place in WA. And the fries were tasty and HUGE. But the order was too big. Kinda like at The Hat. Great fries but too much of a good thing.... Okay so the burger. Heavy, huge patty and the cheese was in the middle of the patty, creative. I got everything on it plus green Jalapenos. Surprisingly, I found the burger tasteless. They do nothing to season the patty. So it is no wonder that they offer so many toppings options. The burger had little char, and tasted more like it was cooked by steam than griddle. Though you can see them cooking on the griddle. But it was really bland and therefore disappointing. Even the Jalapenos were tasteless! No really! I think that's what they are shooting for...delivering the tastelessness of Washington DC to California. In the end, In N Out still wins. For the price of 5 Guys is a disappointment. I can think of several sit down restaurants and greasy spoons that deliver more flavor. If you are seeking an alternative to In N Out I suggest The Habit in Fullerton or Santa Ana. If you feel real adventurous go outside the Orange Curtain and head to one of their LA locations. read more

Wow! Seriously. I am so impressed with Five Guys. I had heard about Five Guys coming to So Cal from my friends who used to live on the East Coast, Brian G. and Robin G. They raved about the food. When I heard one was coming to Orange, I got excited. The grand opening happened when I was on vacation. So the first meal when we got back (other than breakfast at McDonalds of course) was lunch at Five Guys. We get there and there is a line around the building. I get in line and my husband finds a table. We got cheeseburgers and shared a regular fries. One regular fries is plenty for two people. The burgers were so flavorful. I love how you can pick your own toppings, it makes me being choosy about my toppings easy, and the toppings are fun. Hot sauce and jalapenos? Hell ya. The Cajun fries are awesome, don't know if I'll try the regular. Five Guys is definitely a place to write home about. read more

I finally tried Five Guys for the first time. I heard that this place might give In N Out a run for their money. Those are pretty strong words. Now onto the review. I walked in and immediately noticed that Five Guys has the same color scheme as In N Out. Interesting. There were free peanuts in a box near the line and some outdoor seating from what I remember. There were some peanut shells on the ground but there were a lot of workers cleaning the place up so that's always nice to see. They were pretty friendly and helpful too. The guy taking my order explained to me that the regular cheeseburger came with two patties and all of the listed toppings were free. I ordered the cheeseburger and the Cajun fries and a drink. I added grilled mushrooms, jalapenos and onions to my burger. The best part about Five Guys is that they have a bunch of different toppings (onions, shrooms, jalapenos, A1, BBQ, etc). It all came out to be about 10 bucks. That's pretty steep. This cheeseburger better be mighty tasty. My food came out and I took a quick peek inside. I immediately noticed that the jalapenos were not the pickled ones that I am used to. They were the raw kind. Interesting. Anyways, onto the meat. I took a bite and it was pretty juicy. The meat was the star. It was juicy, tasty and moisty (my word, feel free to steal it). The cheese was perfectly melted and the burger was very flavorful. I didn't care much for the raw jalapenos. The bread wasn't toasted and I could see how the buns could get soggy thanks to the juicy meat but luckily my inhalation of my food prevented that from happening. Now onto the fries. The burger lived up to the billing but the fries were a gigantic waste of time. I kept hearing about how the fries were one of the best out there especially the Cajun fries. The seasoning they used had a nice kick to it and the small order was good for two people to share but those are the only good things I could say about them. I like my fries to be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. These were limp. Soft on the outside and undercooked on the inside. Maybe I had a mediocre batch but I didn't even finish them. Too limp. Too soft. Too disappointing. I'd give the burger 4 star, the fries 1 star, the service 4 stars and the price 2 stars. Do the math and it comes out to be about 3 stars. The limp fries and the price tag held this place back from being a 4-5 star place. Overall Five Guys is a place that I'll come back to occasionally. It's a bit too pricey for me to eat here regularly. You can keep comparing them to In N Out but they are two different types of burger joints. In N Out stills takes the burger crown but i could see Five Guys thriving here in OC. There are definitely enough fatties around here to keep these places going. read more

After all the hype, I wanted to love Five Guys. I would have been okay with liking Five Guys. But I don't love nor even like Five Guys. The service was horrendously slow (though apparently they were training a bunch of new cooks, so I'm more forgiving), the burger was very bland and the fries were AWFUL. Salt helped the burger, and at least it was nice and juicy, but nothing helped the fries. The regular ones were not fresh, and seemed to be made from small potatoes because nearly all of them had skin (I don't mind some, but this was overwhelming), and the starch had turned them all sweet. The cajun ones were worse because in addition to all the same problems as the regular, they also had a sprinkling of dried "cajun" seasoning that tasted dusty and bad. One is opening soon near us in Huntington Beach...but sadly, I'm pretty sure I'm done. read more

My husband and I came here for lunch and I have to say that I was not that impressed. Yes, I liked the idea that you can pick as many topping as you like, but the burger itself was not that fantastic. It was mediocre at best. I swore to myself I wasn't going to eat this type of food for awhile, but the gals at my salon were yenta-ing about the cajun fries. Love that there is so much you can have on your burger for a set price- that totally made sense to me. The fries are that natural fresh type like in and out but waaaaayy better. Highly recommend the cajun fries, yum. Burger was good, not great. Its not in and out and I dont really think its trying to be. I've heard all about the burgers from Five Guys from numerous peeps and gave it a try for the first time yesterday. I checked in on Yelp as soon as I ordered and sat to wait for this incredible burger. As we waited for our individually specified burgers, we were supplied an endless amount of yummy salted peanuts. Free for the taking, I helped myself and waited...and waited...and waited... Finally the "glorious" burgers were up and ready for me to indulge myself...only to be sadly reminded that maybe I might have had a bit too high of expectations out of the extremely simple burger joint. I'm glad I can say I tried it, but that was more then enough for me! I'd rather spend the same amount for a burger from Farmer Boys and at least they will have it with fries and a drink for the same cost! Thanks for the peanuts! read more

I just found about this place on Saturday. Never heard of Five Guys before, but I'm glad I did. Now I love In n Out, but sometimes you want something a little different. This was it! The burgers are HUGE, the fries are fried in peanut oil, and the toppings are super fresh. seriously, this was an amazing place to eat. I got there about 1:00pm, and there was a pretty big line. Not too bad of a wait, they've got the production line down pretty good. I got the bacon cheese burger, fries and a Coke. All in all, it was about double what I would have spent at In n Out, but damn, it was a tasty burger. I'll be back for sure. read more

Glancing at the reviews of other yelpers, I didn't even think of comparing this place to In-N-Out, I saw it as your run of the mill build your own burger fast food joint (not quite like Slaters 50/50 or The Counter). I tried the burger with the standard toppings and it tasted like a glorified Whopper (I like Whoppers, btw). The fries were different, that's the only way I could describe them. They are a bit thicker cut than your average fast food joint fries but they serve it's purpose. After finishing the meal, was I satiated? I'd say I was a 3 out of 5. After the meal wrapped up, I got lost in conversation and found myself eating the peanuts that they strategically place right near the door. I'm surprised this place isn't as filthy from all the peanuts. So the food was pretty average to me, and the price wasn't too outrageous. The one thing that really annoyed me was when we dined in, the order numbers were being called in their teleprompter system and the volume was way up to leave me irritated. I went the opening week and stood in line etc. It wasn't worth it in my opinion. My lasting impression? Soggy, soggy, soggy. There's always comparisons to In N Out and here's another one-In N Out wins hands down. Why? Cause the burger at Five Guys has no flavor. Sure they have fresh ingredients and lotsa options, but the bread was mushy and there wasn't any flavor to the patty. I had to add salt and pepper cause I didn't want to add more sauce (it would've made the bread soggier than it was already). I'll take In N Out over Five Guys any day. read more
