It is rare that I hand out a five star review. It is extremely rare that I give a high rating to a burger joint at all. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is all that and the bag of fries. Real meat, not processed patty cakes. We are talking FRESH condiments from the lettuce down to the jalapenos (and I am not talking about the canned peppers, we are talking about honest to goodness fresh cut jalapenos). The staff is friendly. They actually look happy as they put together each custom order by hand. Let's talk about fries for a moment. How could I put in words the description of a perfect serving of fries? A single order of fries is enough for two people. You know how sometimes you get fries from a fast food joint that are soggy, under cooked or just don't taste right? Well these babies are cooked proper. They are the perfect size, not to thin or thick. In my book, they were perfect! The fifth star is given for the manager and staff who went over and beyond to make sure we were absolutely happy with our meal. Twice the manager stepped out from behind the counter to wipe down tables and ask us how the meal was or if he could get us anything. Had to get some lunch while out and about today. Decided to check this place out. It's in the Carson (?) Mall on the outside. Parking is a premium, but I got lucky. Reminds me of In n' Out with its oversimplified menu (a good thing). I had a double cheese bacon burger with the cajun fries. Kind of pricey, 8 bucks, no drink. I liked it. It wasn't a dream burger, but I didn't necessarily feel ripped off either. And, I didn't wait long, in fact I know I didn't because I was able to order, sit down, eat my burger, and still make the twenty-minute time for parking. LOL. SWEET ZOMBIE JEEBUS! These burgers are the real deal! Ok, so this isn't a gourmet $14 burger you can get at a chic sit-down diner or restaurant. However, considering Five Guys is a "fast food" and affordable alternative this place is well worth a visit (and multiple re-visits!!). It is unfortunate that the Five Guys vs In-n-Out battle has become something of a partisan political deathmatch because both fast-food joints offer something a little different. Five Guys is really a "man's" burger. I hate to throw out such a sexist description but expect a large, juicy, towering with condiments (if you wish), messy burger experience that you will be thinking about hours after you devour the meal. In-n-Out provides a more express and cosmopolitan experience. Five Guys is better compared to Fatburger in concept but eerily looks like a duplicate of In-n-Out's styling. Go for the normal burger which is actually 2 hand formed (ie. irregular shaped) patties that are noticeably fresh tasting and teaming with juice. It is very reminiscent of a pan burger people tend to make at home, and that isn't a bad thing! For good measure I also ordered a side of Cajun fries. These were very good boardwalk style fries but I was more interested in the burger than the starchy sides. This place so happens to be the in-n-out of the East Coast! Their slogan is all about how its a great deal and its true. You just pick if you want a Cheeseburger, Hamburger, Bacon Burger, or Bacon Cheeseburger. After that you choose the ENDLESS toppings that you want for your burger for NO additional cost. Their burgers are delicious but it's a burger that anyone can make. Their Cajun fries taste like regular fries. Their store looks cheap but I guess thats what people want these days a GOOD DEAL! You also get endless peanuts waiting for you at the door. Although there is tons of parking there are limited amounts of seats in the restaurant. Especially if you go during lunch rush hour, even during the weekday. I'd say if you're passing by-- give it a chance you just might love it. read more

I FINALLY came in to try their burgers because my cousin from Connecticut told me about Five Guys and said it was the best thing ever beating out In N Out (he is a San Fran Native) Of course I didnt believe him, better than IN N OUT??? NO WAY. So 2yrs later I find myself in here, why the heck not? I was at the mall anyways. As soon as Hubby & I walked in we were greeted with the funniest cashier & cooks ever. They yelled HELLO!!! WELCOME TO FIVE GUYS then the cook started singing of course thats already a star from me! I told the guy this was our 1st time so he explained everything to us. The price was reasonable due to the fact that you can have as much or as little toppings as u want on your burgers also considering the portion of the burgers! I ordered a little burger with cheese & bacon, ketchup, mushroom, onions, etc...and cajun fries. I was told they give a pretty good amount of fries, enough for 2 ppl. As soon as we got our order I was excited to take my first bite. Oh i forgot to mention, hubby got the bigger cheeseburger & bacon whatever size that was and had EVERYTHING on it. anyways back to the food oh dear my first bite was like heaven! i forgot about in and out and all those other burger joints...it was warm, juicy, crunchy lettuce.....ughhhhh everything and then some! the fries, well the fries were nothing specacular i mean it was good, and id probably order it again but it wasnt anything like the burger, the burger I HAD TO HAVE and regretted I didnt get the bigger size :( Hubby LOVED LOVED LOVED his burger, he gave it 5stars or 10/10. The meat used in the burgers tastes some what fresh and not as frozen as other places. You can't beat the topping selection. The fries are excellent with their unique seasoning. The burgers here lie a smidgen or two closer to In-N-Out on a spectrum with In-N-Out on one end and the Counter on the other, price not withstanding. Even though my thick little burger fit for Mr. Bartley contained all the fixins that I love (grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato), it did not catapult me into burger heaven as I hoped it would. One major ding was that the meat patties lacked seasoning. However, the fries were pretty good and were served in a styrofoam cup. A good burger is hard to find, but not at Five Guys! My parents came to visit last weekend and we decided to go to Five Guys after my mom had read the numerous reviews on Yelp (of course). This was our first stop on our L.A. Adventure. Their menu is very simple and yet so complex. Why? For any burger you order, you have the option of getting a single-patty or double-patty FOR THE SAME PRICE! They also have a plethora of toppings you can choose from, so feel free to make your burger any way you want. Again, there is no charge for the additional toppings. If you're expecting some behemoth burger, this is not the place for you. Five Guys Burgers are a moderate-size, but very filling. I ordered the single cheeseburger with grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mustard, and was completely and utterly satiated. A large fry will feed 2-3 people. In-n-Out is my one exception to my no fast-food hamburger rule. I admit, they make a pretty darn good burger but I can't say I ever reached that fanatical level some people seem to have for the place. But they never had any competition in my book as to where to go for a great and cheap classic burger...till now. Husband and I decided to try out this place when we saw a sign for it while hitting up IKEA in Carson. I had seen the sign before but never really took notice until an East Coast friend mentioned them to me. Driving around Southbay Pavilion, it turned out Five Guys was on the other side of the shopping center from where we saw the sign; it's over by Sears. I was a little doubtful as the place looked a little empty and it was already 7pm. When I approached the door, I saw a lady walking out with a brown paper bag that had grease stains forming on the bottom. Hrm, cautiously regaining hope... When we walked in, the decor looked very In-n-Out with red and white tiles and a simple menu hanging over the registers. The dining room was about a 1/3 full but it wasn't exactly a big space. I looked at the menu; it was divided into Burgers, Little Burgers, Dogs and Sandwiches. Turns out the Burgers are double patties while the Little Burgers are singles. The big difference I saw right off the bat...BACON. Yup, they offer up bacon hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Husband was leaping for joy, figuratively. As for the dogs, you can get a straight up Kosher dog, cheese dog, bacon dog or bacon cheese dog. I did briefly wonder why the rest of the dogs weren't Kosher...but just for a split second. :P The sandwiches are the vegetarian options - veggie with or without cheese (not a veggie patty but rather, various vegetable toppings) and grilled cheese. All burgers are initially plain and there is a list of toppings you can choose from. Mayo, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, grilled or fresh onions, tomatoes, pickles, bbq sauce, jalapeno peppers, grilled mushrooms, relish, A-1 sauce or hot sauce are your choices and none of them cost extra. I opted for a little bacon cheeseburger with bbq sauce, jalapenos, lettuce and tomatoes. The burger was juicy and flavorful. I love the fact that sesame seed buns were used. The bacon was crispy and the ratio of toppings to burger to bun was spot on. I could taste everything without any one thing overpowering the others...well, until I bit into a jalapeno that was super hot. I ended up picking them out. I really must be losing my spicy tolerance as I get older... I think I'm going to skip the jalapenos next time and do the grilled onions. Yum. Five Guys offers two sizes of fries done two ways: Five Guys (regular) and Cajun-seasoned. Husband originally ordered a large Cajun-seasoned but the cashier told him that was big enough for 4 people. He went with the regular size. I got a regular order of regular fries which could easily be split between two people. Their fries were natural-cut and cooked in 100% peanut oil. The Cajun seasoning had a little bit of kick to it, really nice! Their regular fries were good too and I munched my bucket down to near empty. I am a french fry fiend!! Husband didn't fare too well in making a dent in his due to the double-patty burger. He said next time, he'll get a single so he could fit more fries in his belly. Also, they have a little board next to the fryer that states where the potatoes come from. Kinda of neat! As for drinks, it's only fountain drinks, no shakes. That really made me sad. One of the things I look forward to when I'm about to indulge in a greasy burger is a delicious shake. Cuz, you know, if you're going to be bad, you mind as well be evil. But Five Guys does get points for having cherry Coke... While we were eating, more people did come in. It seems that the majority of them did to-go orders though. So while the dining room wasn't crowded, business seems to be going well for Five Guys. A neat thing to note is that on the receipt taped to the bag, it numbers each burger and the burger wrappers have a sticker put on them with a number so you can tell which burger belongs to who. In case you were wondering, yes, I was doing a comparison between Five Guys and In-n-Out in my head the entire time I was nomming. The burger at Five Guys squeaks ahead because of the sesame bun and the bacon option. I think the burgers here are a little bigger too and have a little bit more flavor. As for fries, Five Guys is way better. They are cut thicker and were crisper and more cooked thru. Five Guys does lose points with me, though, for not having any shakes. Price-wise, I think the two are comparable. The Little bacon cheeseburger costs $4.69 while the double is $5.59. As for wait time, Five Guys is so much quicker, probably because it hasn't caught on yet. I think Five Guys wins over In-n-Out. Is that blasphemy? Please don't sic the Spanish Inquisition on me! I am not happy with this burger place. I've heard about 5 guys and today my bf and I finally got to taste what "almost" everyone is calling better than In-n-Out. BS!! There is nothing special about their burgers. It's just a plain ol' burger which you can probably make exactly the same at home. No special sauce, no special seasoning on the patty, & no great fries. I've never had a "gourmet" burger, so I am definitely not comparing this place to those types of burgers, but I am comparing 5 guys with In-n-Out, Jim's Burgers & The Hat's. This burger patty was cooked well, which isn't to my liking, but I still ate it. The only thing that really sets them apart is having a list of condiments which you can choose, but can't you put your own A-1, mayo, ketchup, mustard or bbq sauce on the burgers you cook at home? They also have grilled mushrooms... but there was barely any in the burgers I ate. My bf and I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with everything and a hamburger with everything accompanied by a large order of Cajun fries to share. The size of the portions are good for the price, but $3.49 (somewhere around there) for an order of large fries which is served in a 12 oz cup is kinda pricey. The little burger is a single patty burger and the other a double. They also smoother their buns with tons of mayo, so if you're not a big fan of mayo like my bf, make sure you to tell them easy mayo. I like my buns toasted and have a nice crunch when I bite into it like In-n-out, but the buns were smashed down and soggy. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!! :( The menu is also confusing because there is a list of burgers and a list of little burgers with no small print to define the difference. Luckily, I was discussing what to order with my bf, when some folks decided to help us out and gave us their definition by showing us their burgers, but that didn't help. Finally, we asked the employee and he said one patty or two patty and that's the difference. I've seriously had better burgers at In-n-Out, Jim's and The Hat's. Well, this is a tough one, but not really. The four stars you see on this review, are for the burger. The fries are OK. The store is nice, the service is excellent (VERY friendly crews, though not quite like the stepford high school girls at INandOUT). But when it comes down to it, what makes it worth the couple more bucks, the driving time if you don't live in Carson Torrance, Gardena, ETC is the BURGER. Some reviewers have some issues with the execution of the burger, but I can tell you, this review is based on about 30 visits, and my results were consistent every single time. Anyway, this burger, the best way to describe it is, the INGREDIENTS are like a home made burger, like say, your dad would make out back on the girll, everything fresh, big patties, etc. But the PREPERATION of the burger, considering this is a "fast food" place, is amazing. As another reviewer said, you can pay about $9 more for a "fine dining" burger, but this burger is my experience is executed just like that type of burger. The first couple of times I ate there, I thought, this is not like a fast food burger at all, this is like something done by a line cook at such a restaraunt. Perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, flavors come together beautifully. My favorite is the bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions. Simple, perfect comfort food (for me, anyway). One thing you should know, if you haven't visited before--the "regular" burger is a double, and it's well over 1/4 pound. Again, this is not your typical "fast food' burger, with 1/2 inch patties. These are patties you would make from fresh meat at home. if your appetite is small, get the "little' burger, still pretty big. Lastly, the ordering system is a little big different, you basically "build your burger" by telling them exactly what toppings you want. Almost all topings are included-I think mushrooms and jalapenos, and bacon are extra, I don't remember. But all the "condiments" and garnishes...have as much as you want piled on there. The burgers here at Five Guys are good for the price. You get a decent variety of toppings and everything tasted fresh when I went. The burgers aren't the biggest ever, but mine was juicy and reminded me of what I imagine when I think of a classic bacon cheeseburger. The fries also have a unique taste because they're made in peanut oil. Their Cajun style fries were really well seasoned and not too spicy. I will definitely be coming back here for more of these. So my wife has heard a lot abut this place. I haven't. So we tried it out one day because we were in the area (Ikea). The burgers are pretty good, juicy and meaty; the fries were only ok, the decor, kinda reminded me of In N Out. The service is what makes it a really good place. The cashier was fun and lively, she looked like she loved her job, same with the cooks and the preps, they were all smiling and laughing; a younger group. The bus boys were very cool too, they were very polite and extremely helpful. I'd go back because of the service, not so much the food cause like Eddie C. said, you can find a burger joint on every corner, it's finding the good ones though that are what make burgers great. So after hearing all the hype how this is the East coast version of In-N-Out, I was finally in the area to try it. After spending a gruesome 3 hours looking around in Ski Dazzle at the LA convention Center, I worked up quite an appetite. I showed up around 6, and there weren't that many people inside. I guess its not that popular yet. I ordered a regular cheeseburger with japalenos, grilled onions, and tomatoes, which was $4.50. Add in an extra $3.00 for the cup of regular sized cajun fries. I looked over the counter to see they use generic buns that could have been bought at Costco. On top of that, the burger size didn't match the price. At least they give you a very very generous portion of fries that can easily be split with 2 people. I'll be honest, I love In-N-Out, but this burger was better than theirs. I didn't realize the burger had 2 patties inside. The burger just has more flavor overall. However, I expected the cajun fries to be amazing. Unfrotunately, I was a bit disappointed since it was overseasoned, therefore being too salty. If i were closer, I wouldn't mind coming back here no doubt. The problem is the price. I guess the quality justifies the higher prices, but I don't need to shell out nearly 5 bucks for a burger that size. I don't mind the fries though, minus the overseasoning. After reading the reviews on here, I was convinced this place was either the second coming of Christ or a dump. I was also a skeptic as to whether this place "blows in an out out of the water". In most categories, this place rocks, but in other areas, it blows. The Great: The fries. They fucking blow in n out, mc donalds, and anywhere else on earth out of the water. They are generous and delicious. The service was also friendly, except my bathroom encounter (see below). We told the register guy we were Five Guys rookies, and he very nicely went down the menu. The good: The burger and bun were delicious, and they offer an shit load of toppings. If you cant configure a burger here than you like, please, exit the establishment, drive to Palos Verdes or Manhattan Beach, and order some yuppie vegan burger. What's all the hype about? Just had to go and see. First impression is it's super busy inside. That's promising....We walk in and herd ourselves through the line which takes a few minute so I have the chance to orient myself with the menu. I order a cheese burger with lettuce, tomato, onion and peppers with Cajun fries. My other half orders the same sans peppers and we wait about 10 minutes for our order. I'm surprised at the size of the burger. It's no behemoth but it was bigger than I expected. The burger is pretty good with a nice meat to bun/veggie ratio but what surprised me was the peppers. I was expecting cooked peppers or jalapeno pepper but I wasn't expecting raw green bell peppers. Very unusual but I have to say I liked it! As for the fries, I really enjoyed that they were seasoned fries but the texture was too soggy for me. I'll go back for a burger but definitely skip the fries next time. read more

I will give this the big five-o. When I walked in it was the second time and a time to taste the meat. The staff here is one of the great highlights. I believe we met one of the owners and he was happy to talk and offer suggestions to my veggitarian friend. I was glad to hear that he treated this store like his baby and his employees much like partners in an operation. Do me a favor and talk to them, it is one of the few places where the employees are not scolded or scorned for talking to you, the bloody customer. The food is amazing. The beef is all, beef. I asked how the patties were formed, by hand. The hamburger patties taste like little saucers of ground steak. The burger can come with a myriad of toppings that eventually overflow out of the plentiful burger. I order grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, jalapeños, cheese and no tomatoes (thanks to our industrialized farming system and salmonella) BUY LOCAL. The jalapeños surprised my by being fresh, and the mushrooms were also grilled fresh. The bun is a fluffy little bun with sesame seeds, nothing out of the ordinary but beautiful. I would like to showcase the Cajun seasoning on the fries. I saw the huge bottles of generic 'Cajun seasoning' and was put off. After having the regular fries I thought, something else to yelp about. The seasoning is not just colored salt. The Cajun has oregano, paprika, a bit of cayenne and some other sultry stuff to make a well seasoned non spicy fry. The cost is worth it, so is the service. Everybody wants to compare both and say which one is better. I really want to say "why not both" but dammit I can't. See, when you hear people in the East Coast always talking shit about how food is way better out there it fucking offends me like we're eating shit out here. So naturally I get a little ticked that one of their big name burger joints is coming down here and it's gunning to take the crown away from our home town favorite. But is a champ really a champ if he's never been challenged? No. As a world famous (not really) burger connoisseur, I had to keep all West Coast pride to the side and give this joint a shot. The verdict: The burger: (A+) I understand the hype around their famous burgers and it's well deserved. The juicy burger is just frickin delicious and it's a contender for the title. I honestly thought they fucked up my order but after doing some research I found out that the regular burgers come in doubles...Five Guys, I like your style. The Fries: (C) I didn't know if they were Cajun or Regular or dumped in hot grease and forgotten then thrown in our bag. The fries were forgettable and did not complement the burger at all. The Service: (F) Our cashier (Michael P.) was a douchebag, period. The fucked up thing is I'm pretty sure he was the manager. He was wearing a gray shirt while everyone else wore read. He fucked up my order more than once, he never looked me straight in the eye. He was rude and as a newbie to this place, I was lost when ordering and he was of no help at all. I need to know that if I want lettuce, I need to say "lettuce!" Overall, the manager/cashier pretty much fucked up any chance of this place getting high marks on my review. I ate my burger pissed off due to his attitude. Five Guys is a legit contender but they've got issues to work out, mainly with customer service and they probably need to rethink their fries. OK, so i have to start by saying that i gave them 3 stars because of the ridiculous amount of food they give you. and by food, i am referring to the amount of fries. in my younger days where metabolism was amazing, I could eat a pound of fries in a big greasy bag, but nowadays, the amount of calories are just unnecessary. i got the grilled cheese with jalapenos which was AWESOME!!!!, but the amount of fries were out of control. even sharing them resulted in throwing away nearly half of a SINGLE order... argh, if you are going with a group of people, its worth your money, but i woulda been happier with it being cheaper and a smaller portion? oh well i probably sound like a snobby elitist who only eats little portions, but they seriously have a crazy amount in portion size. read more

They hand me my order of buger and fries and the oil is already seeping through the bag. Is that a good thing or bad thing? The burger itself is tasty... like a burger you would grill and make at home. It's made-to-order with your selection of toppings. Price is on the higher end for me as far as fast food burger prices go. Kitchen is open to your viewing. Kinda grosses me out cuz it looks so hot back there and they might sweat on your food. What sane habitant of California has never heard of IN-N-OUT, the best (fast-food) burger in the West. Well, on the East Coast, they counter our burger monarchy with a joint called Five Guys. The two are very different from each other and hard to compare. However, Five Guys is definitely comparable and most certaintly worth trying (even if the Califronia locations happen to be in the middle of nowhere). Environment- Five Guys, like IN-N-OUT, keeps all of their restaurants very simple. The floors are checkered and there are papers hung on the wall that appraise their burgers. All locations are kept very clean. Food- Againt, like -IN-N-OUT, there is a limited menu. However, Five Guys offers much more variety. They have hot dogs, burgers ("little burgers") and double doubles ("regular burgers"). All can be ordered with bacon or cheese. Perhaps the best part about five guys is that they have unlimited toppings you can choose from for free! I personally, don't like condiments and still have a full burger here. Any grilled vegetable you would put on, standard condiment, BBQ sauce, A-1 sauce, and so much more. Their burger patties are much thicker than IN-N-OUT's (two IN-N-OUT patties make one of Five Guys). For some reason, I love how each burger is wrapped in tin foil and numbered with a sticker(organizationally obsessed?). I, unlike most, HATE IN-N-OUT's fries. I loved the fries at Five Guys (especially the Cajun), however, the rest of the group agreed that they could be crispier. By the way, if you think a Five Guys in the Santa Monica Place would be cool (Fatburger never came) mark as "cool" because we might try to open one! read more

I wish I wouldve known that the hamburger was 2 patties. That thing is big! not that im complaining or anything.. So first of all, the line moved really fast even though it was peak lunch time. The service was excellent as well. I ordered a hamburger with "everything" (ketchup, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onion, grilled mushroom) plus jalapenos. I like that all the toppings were free and that you could choose as much or as little as you want (but this definitely reflects in the higher prices!) What I liked about the burger: - the bread was nice and soft but held up to the juicy burger - the meat was juicy and cooked well - the pickles and jalapenos add a nice crunch What I didnt like: - the grilled mushrooms were SO bland and unappetizing, i def would not order these again - the grilled onions were just okay, they could have been more browned to give them more flavor So, overall a decent burger but i think it was lacking in flavor. If i were to go again, I would add bacon, bbq sauce or A1, hot sauce, onion and jalapenos! and perhaps try the fries... and the free peanuts. Or maybe I'll just stick to in-n-out :) read more

That said they are by far the best tasting chain burger I have had, meat is perfect, great texture and never the chewy grissle or bone fragments you would get at The Habit. Really good fast food burger. I came here with some expectations since I had been hearing such good things about it. The burger was of a really good quality. The patties come out crudely shaped, which I like since it gives off a better impression of being freshly made. And a nice difference from the pre formed patties at most other places. The french fries were really good. And probably the best I've had at a fast food joint. I tried both the season and regular fries. The seasoned fries were too salty, the regular fries were just perfect. I would put this burger right up there with an In-n-Out double double. The Five Guys burger feels more substantial and filled me up more a DD. And while I do like the soft and tender fries at InnOut, the Five Guys fries are cooked different and just as good, if not better. read more

Wanted to try this place after hearing someone on the radio rave about it (in a non-commercial way). All I can say is "it's alright". Before you go here please...DO NOT compare this burger joint to In-N-Out (nothing compares c'mon) Five guys was originally started in Virginia (my hometown) and its a east coast type burger joint. Their burgers have a home made feel like you went to somebody's backyard. Unlimited toppings of your liking. Tip: I love their bbq sauce on the side. Yum. After you order make your way to the "free peanuts" you can enjoy while waiting for your food to come out. If you look at their board they have different potatoes from different states listed to let you know where they came from for that week. You can get regular fries or Cajun style which is my personal favorite and go to. You can get small fries and still share enough for two people inside that paper brown bag :) Tip: East coast way you get ketchup and the malt vinegar (must) and dip your fries in it! You're welcome... Service here is always great, friendly cashier, and good burgers. And so the debate continues... I like my burgers pretty plain. So all these extra mushroom toppings didn't impress me. I did add bacon, which made my burger quite tasty, but didn't push it over the top. The Fries were good, but then again, I've never had a problem with In N Out's fresh potatoes. It was good.
