The bottom buns on both of our burgers were burned. The meat was dried out and overdone. Mine was saved because I put all the stuff on it. The fries, admittely piled high in the bag, were overly done, perhaps because the oil hadn't been changed recently. We approached $20 for basic junk food. The best burger in town? Not by a long shot. I don't know if it was just a bad day or what. I ate here on a lunch break one day and did not exactly feel well afterward. I don't know what I can say but I'll say that I was not the only person in my group who had the same experience. This was the primary reason for my low rating. I don't like re-experiencing meals in the restroom just over an hour later. I guess I'm old fashioned. The service was great. These kids sell it like they mean it and you've got to love them for it. The burger was fine but nothing I'm jotting down in a food memory journal. The fries were average at best. The choose your own toppings aspect is nice, but becoming more and more common with modern burger joints (especially in this neighborhood) so I can't add stars for it. I'm leery. First experience at 5 Guys - and it wasn't such a great burger place. It's not a bad location if you're in a hurry, in the area, or with a group of people. The good: Order directly from the cashier - efficient and quick - and easy for going to eat with a group of people - not worrying about split checks, etc. Employees are friendly The cajun fries are pretty good too - and they give you loads of them. Decent, but not amazing. After a LOT of people talking about how great this place is, I was excited to find one nearby! I don't really hunt down hamburger joints [I can make my own and they're better more often than not] but with all teh word of mouth about this place, I decided to give it a shot. I walked in and it was surprisingly slow, granted it was 3pm, which tends to be pretty slow in most food joints, but there were literally only 4 people in the restaurant at this time. The decor is nothing special, it's pretty plain and it just has news articles / awards posted along the wall about how awesome they are....in other cities. After only a few minutes I sat down to enjoy a late lunch. The burger was quite good, not the best burger in the world and was a slight let down as I was expecting to be blown a way, but it was in fact better than most burgers I've had, so I can't take that away from them. The biggest let down were the fries. While chomping away at my burger, I was looking up at all the "awards" this place has won and in a lot of cases, it was for "voted best fries in 2009 in [insert random big cities here]". So I got some ketchup and went to town on the fries. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. I've had better fries from a fast food joint. These fries were limp with only a slight crisp, they were closer to soft. I dunno if this is normal, or if I just got unlucky. Overall the place is decent, not really overpriced, you get what you pay for. But I've had better burgers and I've definitely had better fries. After two visits, I don't think I have it down yet but I do like it. The fries are good but the amount is overwhelming for one person. Luckily, I like them refried and added to my scrambled eggs so leftovers are fine. What I didn't like was that the burger is made with double meat and if you want a single, it is a little burger. I'm pretty sure I didn't see that information on the menu therefore I got more than I anticipated between a second patty and enough fries for 3 people. The burger is a little on the greasy side but the variety of "toppings" makes up for that. The people working in here are very friendly. Lunch today was a bit on the early side so there weren't many people in the store. Delish. Expensive, but probably the best of the nearby expensive burger places (Elevation, Mighty Fine, Red Robin). Perfectly-sized and -cooked patties. Fries cooked in peanut oil - and free peanuts just to prove they are cooked in peanut oil. And the price, while high for a burger, is pretty reasonable and very comparable with the other restaurants I mentioned earlier. The big problem is simply the amount of food you get. The smallest size fries you can get is two "servings" (sure, I'll just put half my fries in the refrigerator for later!), totalling over 600 calories. A single burger with no cheese or mayo will get you to the same place. It is VERY EASY to inhale 1500 calories at this restaurant without noticing. Oh yes, the other big con is that this place is packed at lunch, even if you're able to find a parking place (try the garage next to the Cheesecake Factory). Try to go at 11:30 or 1:00. read more

I absolutely love 5 Guys. I am surprised about the dissention among the ranks on this one. Every burger I've had there has been perfectly cooked. Yes, the wait is a bit long, but that is because they put the burger on when you order it. I like my fries to be a bit crisper, and if you ask for them to cook them a bit longer, they will. You come to Five Guys when you are tired of overstuffed and overhyped gourmet burgers and want some good old fashioned juicy, salty food with fine-tuned, classic toppings. My favorite combo is a Little Cheeseburger with mayo, sauteed mushrooms, green peppers, and fresh onions- a great blend of savory and crunchy that I haven't really found anywhere else. I would say that Five Guys is on par with Mighty Fine on service and quality,(both excellent) but I really prefer the options and fries here. I never leave here hungry- I can order a Little burger and be happily topped off by the fries. I was about to write a review the first time I went to this location about how it was nothing special to any other burger place, good thing I waited until my second trip. The burgers are great, I made the mistake the first time with loading it up with a salad (lettuce, tomatoes, onions). Not to say that the ingredients aren't good and fresh, they just take so much away from the taste of the meat. Plus why would you want to put that when you can get grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, jalapenos or a dozen better ingredients than healthy vegetables. The burger is definitely 5 star worth. However, when you go to 5 guys you read alot about how these are the best fries evar!! Maybe it's all the hype around it, but the fries weren't that impressive to me, but maybe that's because I like my fries with a little crispiness. OK burger, OK Fries. I didn't particularly find it attractive that i had to specify every single topping and condiment i wanted on my burger. They should have presets or recommendations. I had tried Five Guys in Temple, TX a couple of times, and once on Guadalupe here in town. I liked the Temple location rather better than the one on Guadalupe, but neither really blew my skirt up too high. While figuring out where to go with my mom, my sis and brother in law, BiL wanted to go to Mighty Fine. No, thank you. Sis suggested Five Guys, and we had agreement (in under 5 minutes, might be a new record for us). This was, far and away the best Five Guys burger experience I've had to date - that was a really good burger! I don't know how to explain what was different about it, but something made it really good. The fries are acceptable, but nothing to write home about (I prefer the spicy version, but everybody else wanted them plain), and I do enjoy the peanuts. I found it only midly disturbing to drink blue-tinted water (the water dispenser being located on the PowerAde tap, which apparently leaks or something). I have to admit that I find the decor a bit obnoxious - the colors are fine (bright and clean and cheery), and I like the shiny tile, but all the glaringly blatant self-promotion is just too much. Pretty good burger. Do not go if you are allergic to Peanuts! They're everywhere. Simple, good and the ads & articles on the wall are comforting. They make ya feel better about paying more than you rightfully should for a burger. But you do get to choose from a bunch of toppings for no extra charge, ie: grilled mushrooms, onions, jalapenos etc. The thing I least enjoyed eating was the bun, just plain & booooooring. My companion and I went to Five Guys in the Arboretum last night and I still haven't recovered. He ordered a burger and tiny fries, but I just wanted to get fries and a chocolate shake. I ordered a medium fries and ate less than half, because the shake was very filling. I should've been suspicious when the bag had so many grease marks, but I made the mistake of trusting Five Guys. An hour later, my stomach started rumbling and was followed by 6 trips to the bathroom (I will spare you the gory details) within 45 minutes - and that was WITH an Immodium! I do not have a particularly weak stomach, so I urge those who do to beware! I was also shocked by how the prices have drastically raised in the past few years. Web orders seem to be ignored here. I've placed web orders at the Arboretum location 3 times over the past year or so (with the last one being this morning). My orders were always placed on off-hours, and I would arrive at the restaurant a few minutes after the pickup time. In all three cases, my web order wasn't started until after I arrived and walked up to the cashier to pick up my food. Now, this would be understandable if the restaurant was busy, but it wasn't. This morning, for example, I counted less than a dozen customers in the restaurant. 4 or 5 orders were picked up before mine was ready, and in each case they had higher numbers than mine (so I know those orders were all placed after mine). My interest in Five Guys was piqued when I first heard of President Obama and VP Biden stopping in for lunch at a DC-area Five Guys early on in their term. They both ordered cheeseburgers (Obama requested dijon mustard on his), they joked with the staff, wrapped up their photo op, and it barely made the airwaves. Ha, just kidding! Conservative pundits from Shawn Hannity to Laura Ingarham used precious airtime to lose their minds and call the President a snob because of the mustard choice, and chided him for not being a real man for foregoing ketchup on a cheeseburger. It was a little taste of what was to come in the political climate of America from thereon in (although the insults eventually skyrocketed from "effete snob" to "foreign Kenyan socialist Muslim atheist Marxist dictator and ultimate Antichrist intent on destroying the USA and the entire universe"), but the point was I wanted to try this "Five Guys" and put dijon mustard on one, just to see what all the fuss was about. So, yeah, that was like, three years ago. After a particularly fruitless visit to the Arboretum shops where my mother and I didn't find anything we were looking for in terms of Christmas gifts, I noticed this Five Guys. And I was starving. It was finally time. The first thing I noticed was a quote from GQ on the wall, proclaiming Five Guys to be the best burger a man can get for $5. That was heartening, despite the fact it's wholly contradictory. How can I fit into all the designer crap they suggest if I were eating at Five Guys all the time? Then I remembered it wasn't all the time, so I felt better. Peanuts. Lots and lots of peanuts are out in the open, although I was never the "crack open peanuts" type of guy. Not even at a restaurant where you can throw the shells on the floor like at Willie Nelson's place, whatever it's called. The menu is straight and to the point, reminiscent of In 'N Out's (although I must pause and emphasize that NO FAST FOOD IN THE WORLD beats In 'N Out, so that's not what I am implying, at all.) From what I gathered, Five Guys also does NOT have a secret menu, so I refrained from asking for a Double Double Animal Style and instead ordered a bacon cheeseburger with everything on it except ketchup. Gah, I'm such an evil, un-American socialist! I added the Five Guys fries, a la carte, which are cooked in pure, no cholesterol, peanut oil. Their unsweetened tea was horrendous (as so many in fast food restaurants are), so I switched to soda. As I was filling up my Diet Coke, a woman walked past me in a coat I faintly recognized. Surely that wasn't Catherine T.? Was it? She didn't say hi to me. I'm glad we are both check-in fanatics, because I verified she checked in to Five Guys 7 minutes before me. Good...now I can say hi without the potentially awkward scenario of approaching a stranger. She totally hadn't noticed me, which also allayed my fears she had seen me and was purposefully ignoring me. We were catching up so much, she finally invited Mom and me to join her at the table. While I scarfed down my meal, Catherine and Mom talked about the Beatles and assorted restaurants' openings/closings. I was busy enjoying a burger that can be described as juicy and very delicious (albeit a little *too* greasy). I especially enjoyed the grilled mushrooms, and for someone who has a distaste for melted cheese, I didn't mind this one at all. This burger was inhaled, barely even chewed...but that was more a function of hunger than taste. The fries are above average in quality, and surprisingly large in quantity. When I watched an employee fill another order by pouring fries into a bag, I thought that customer was stocking up for several people. Turns out everyone gets a ton of fries with an order. Interesting approach. But remember, they're tasty on the lips, and dangerous on the hips. I'd rank Five Guys "up there" on my list of preferred fast food. It certainly comes highly recommended...although to be honest, I have to say overall it is slightly "oversold". It's a decent bacon cheeseburger and I didn't leave full. but all the pithy one line reviews all over the place extolling its many virtues would make it sound on par with In 'N Out, when it is clearly not. The best part about the stop was definitely hanging out with Catherine. I'm glad she got to meet my mom and get to know Mom's quirky personality, mostly so she knows I'm not just making stuff up about her as I go. I'll definitely be back the next time I have a craving. Oh sweet, another burger place up north! If nothing else, Five Guys is far superior to the Sharper Image that it replaced. It's pretty standard: pick your burger (regular is two patties, little is one) then pick your toppings from the list. They cook the beef to death like all the other places I've been to, but it manages to stay pretty juicy. Be prepared for a ridiculous amount of fries no matter what size you get. i had five guys a while back ago in houston, but didn't think it would be fair to post a review before trying it again. meh is right. pros: -the little hamburger is more than enough to fill me up, so i like the option of a smaller burger (kinda like having a whopper jr... yummm) -lots of topping options that are free! (grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, i'm not sure what else b/c that's all i needed) cons: -although i am a carb-lover, i have a thing about too much bun with meat (the best wurst review). it was soo "bun-y" i had to take off the top to eat an open face burger -after a bite or two, part of the beef patty came apart and fell on to the table. uuuh.... huuh?! what kind of burger patty does that?! and while we're on the meat, the patty was bland and kinda dry! maybe that can account for it breaking into multiple chunks. -the fries were unimpressive. yes, you can get them cajun style- loads of seasoning that really feels more like it belongs on fried shrimp. yes, it butches up plain joe fries, but it will have you running for the nearest source of water as well as a breath mint. -one more thing. no fatty shake option? i mean, i think all burger joints should be required to have milkshakes available, at least. i may not always get it, but the option is nice. read more

A friend of mine wanted a cheeseburger for lunch today, and I was at a loss for a place in NW Austin which I had not tried. However, I had heard about 5 guys, and while the Arboretum is kind of a pain to get into and out of, I figured, let's try them. She said that they were "pretty good." Now, let me say, I don't often review here because there are plenty of reviews and reviewers. It either has to be a restaurant that no one has reviewed (and is worth reviewing), or it must truly deserve a review. Five guys falls into the second category. "Pretty good," doesn't begin to describe Five Guys. First, as I began this review, I searched pretty carefully all over Yelp for the opposite of a star. I was thinking "maybe I could give it 5 black holes." That would pretty much cover it. Apparently, I can't give it zero stars, either, so for those of you reading, please understand that this is, in fact, the absolute lowest rating that can be given here on Yelp. I'm tempted to search for all places within a square mile of this joint and remove a star from them for being that close. Or, perhaps, to go find all other burger joints and add a star under the "you're not 5 guys" theory. Now, let's get to the meat of the matter, which is the absolute closest you're going to get to meat if you head over to Five Guys. Seriously, folks, pray for the extinction of whatever "animal" they use in their "burgers," so these guys cannot continue this chain. If anyone knows who is responsible for issuing subpoenas for Crimes Against Humanity, please write them or direct them to this review, and perhaps, with your help, justice can be realized in our lifetime. I probably should have been tipped off when we arrived at 12:20, and there were only 2 tables occupied. I just chalked it up to the whole "Arboretum is a pain to get to" thing, and I naively continued to the counter. I ordered a bacon "cheeseburger," and I was told it would be about 7 minutes, but I could gorge myself on the free peanuts in the strange little bucket, so, I did. At least I got _some_ protein while I was there. Eventually, they called my number (I remember the order number as being 666, but that might just be the toxins continuing to play havoc with my mind), and I opened my "burger" and looked at it before taking a bite. There were 2 ostensibly-beef patties covered in a thick yellow goo (search for images for "slime mold" to see what it looked like) which presumably was the Soviet military issue equivalent of Cheese Whiz that had been stored to close to Chernobyl for too long. Underneath these melted yellow crayons were a couple of flat disc-shaped things which I assumed to be the "burger" part of the "burger." Shrugging and assuming it must be better than it looked, I took my first bite. Charlton Heston's iconic line from Soylent Green immediately began reverberating in my head. I took a deep drink of Coke and pulled apart the burger to ensure that a small mammal had not defecated in it unnoticed. None had. I shuddered and attempted to reassemble my burger, but whatever used Fritz Lang-inspired post-modern grease trap they initially reclaimed the ingredients from apparently instilled this "burger" with certain properties which assured it could be assembled once and once only. Or, perhaps, it was a magic "burger," and when I ceased to believe in it, it devolved into its component parts, none of which is something you would ever want your children to see. I moved on to the "award-winning" fries, hoping that this award wasn't something like "proudly holding up the Library of Congress since 1850," and these, at least were palatable. I don't know, though, in what world slicing up potatoes and tossing them into a vat of (presumably peanut) oil and doing NOTHING ELSE WHATSOEVER would inspire anyone who can actually read and write to vote them for "best fries." This place, is very good! We've eaten here and taken it to go for a drive about 10 min away. Fresh, hot, can order the way you like! They have peanuts while you wait. They offer different sizes of Fries and cajun if you like. Usually a small will feed 2 people and if you come in toward the end of the night sometimes they will overload you with their fries which then you'd probably want a small and be able to feed like 3-4 people... It's best if you ate there because they tend to wrap everything in foil and that causes mushy burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches, however the hot dogs can withstand the wrapping a bit better. Their food is very tasty and they have variety. Everything is toasted, and you have a clear taste of the burger, and bacon and extras you request. What is it with so many fries, I couldn't eat even have the cup they gave me. It was okay but have had better burgers, although they taste fresh like home made. They take a few mintues to serve you, the place was clean but the ambiance was noisy, didn't enjoy it with family or I guess need to be in a better mood... but go ahead and judge for yourselves. So the burger was mediocre. But paid 2.50 for a regular Tea. Went to get Tea and they were out the guy said he was going switch it out. Went to the bathroom where just one big roll of Paper Towels to use I guess as everyone else washed their hands thoroughly but came back and Tea still not switched out! Made another comment finally after 15 min got my Tea and left will NEVER COME to this location in Round Rock next to Discount Tires again Rude and Uncaring!!! read more

Five Guys gets thumbs up from me. I love this place. I think everyone else does too since the walls are full of awards. It all starts when you enter the door and everyone working acknowledges the customers. It's really a nice, warm welcome. They smile and wait while you decide what to order. Shall it be a single patty? Double patty? Maybe some spicy fries? Whatever it is you choose, expect to spend at least 10 bucks for a burger, fries and drink. I mean, the smallest french fries option is $2.99. The establishment is very clean and they offer peanuts to eat at your table while they make your burger. I had a single patty cheeseburger, with mayo, raw onions, ketchup, lettuce and tomato. It was damn good. Parking stinks. It's in the Arboretum near Barnes and Noble so there isn't ever much parking. I always park far away and just walk, since I can always assume there is no parking close to Five Guys. If you're stuck between Mighty Fine and Five Guys, I'd go with Five Guys.
