Love the fries and I liked the burger but I prefer thicker and less greasy burgers like the ones at Terra Burger and Mighty Fine. Been there...done that. I work at the Arboretum, so I thought I'd walk down to Five Guys and try it out. I didn't realize I'd spend my entire 30 minute lunch break waiting for my food. While I waited, I had the pleasure of one of the employees griping to me the entire time he swept under & cleaned the tables around me. Once I finally got my food, it was okay, but not really a meal you want to scarf down so you're not late getting back to work. I found it expensive as well. There are much better choices in the Arboretum and I can definitely live without some over-salted peanuts. Pretty sure I won't be going back. read more

Maybe the poor initial reviews were right after this place opened, but I had an amazing experience here! I had the small cheeseburger with mushrooms and pickles. My husband had a regular cheeseburger with pickles and fresh jalapenos. He also had the cajun fries which he absolutely loved! Our food was ready in under 15 minutes and fries were crisp and hot, fresh out of the fryer! Everything was fantastic, the staff was very friendly, and the restaurant was tidy and clean. I'm a big burger fan, and think that Austin has some of the best to offer in that department. Well, I'll definitely say that Five Guys ain't one of the best. The service was great and the atmosphere fine, but when I looked at the burger I was about to eat I couldn't help but let out a resounding "meh". The bun was too big (I'm paying for taste, not the bland flavor of highly refined sugar in white bread) and the burger too thick. I enjoy a thinner burger with a MUCH thinner bun. I want variation in the burger - all the fixins mixing together well in every bite. At Five Guys I just didn't experience anything close to this goal. Food? Good. Clean? Check. Annoyance factor? Off the charts. Is there no casual place that does not automatically assume the majority of their customers are hard of hearing?? Besides us, there were only 2-3 other tables in use at the time but you would have thought the place was so packed that the piped in music had to be kept at full blast to rise over conversations. We asked if the volume could be lowered, were told they'd "try" and of course as is so often the case, nothing was done. Really?? I admire the nifty extras you can get on your burger for no extra charge, but the one thing missing is any attempt to jazz up the meat itself. Salt? Pepper? Seasoned salt? Something? They need that to tie it all together since the meat is cooked on a grill rather than over flames (flames being always the absolute best choice, by the way). The final thing is that with all the extra goodies, the bun just can't hold up long enough. Tasty burger but my head still hurts from the noise so that's why 5 Guys didn't get 5 stars. read more

This place was just absolutely horrible. Like other places, their workers were teenagers. They got both of my friends order wrong twice. And when we did get the food, it was awful. They always say their fries were unique, but they tasted like fries I've tasted at least 7 different restaurants. So I use to think Five Guys was a 4-5 star type of quick burger joint. I haven't been in about a year so I was shocked to see the price increases! A little hamburger and fries was almost $10!! I feel like this use to be closer to $7 at most.. As other reviewers have pointed out, this is the type of price you expect at a casual sit down restaurant. Sure the burger is good, but the pricing is off for the overall restaurant experience. I ordered my burger online. My receipt said it would be ready at 1:08pm but when I arrive at 1:16pm they were just starting to put the meal together. I know not to expect online ready times to be 100% accurate.. but this place was not busy! The guys working behind the counter were friendly though. I'm bummed. My coworker and I came here on our lunch break, both craving burgers. Both kind of unimpressed when we left. First of all, I'm not about paying almost $5 for a shake that isn't even made with real milk! We ordered small burgers and our wait was waaaay too long....(we had enough time to go get ice cream, eat the ice cream and come back.. and still waited for a solid 10 min after that). We spent a total of about half an hour there, and we got our food to go. There was literally two other people in the store and they already had their food. After moving back to Austin from the Dallas area, one of the first things I wanted was a Five Guys burger. However, it's been a major disappointment. The first time, for some reason the Arboretum location didn't have shakes. They over cooked the fries and the staff was just going through the motions. I filled out the survey and got a call back, talked w/ the regional mgr., and agreed to go back. Went back 2 weeks later, staff was better but the fries were horrible. Burnt, but still raw inside. We've been here several times since the original review and I have to say that this location is continually slipping. Today the hamburger buns were not very fresh and broke apart while eating the burgers. The meat was quite dry and fairly tasteless. The staff had old school heavy metal music blasting. One time there was so much mayo it was like they put it on the buns AND the patties - it was disgusting, like a mayo sandwich with cafeteria beef. This is a good solid burger for a reasonable price. I love the choice of toppings that are included. I usually get grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, fresh jalapeños, fresh bell pepper, lettuce, and tomatoes. All are included in the price. The single patty one is plenty big and the Cajun frys are nice. This is a great place to go for a stroll around the Arboretum afterwards. The vegetables seemed fresh and the hamburger pattys were juicy. I was disappointed about the size of the entire burger. I thought it would have been much bigger that it actually was, but I guess I'm used to eating Whataburgers. There were a metric butt-ton of fries to make up for the burger's size though. Unfortunately the fries I received were limp and greasy. The price for the entire meal was a shocker. It was very close to and may even exceed bar pricing (around $12 for a burger, regular fries, and a small soda)! It didn't look or taste like a $12 meal. It looked and tasted like a $8 meal, at most. What happened??? I used to be a huge fan of Five Guys...but yesterday some co-workers and I went over there after I had been raving about it for months. Something has changed. They still have the awesome choice of toppings, their fries are awesome but they didn't "brown" our burger patties and they weren't seasoned. I was thoroughly disappointed and slightly embarrassed in front of my co-workers. I didn't know that my burger, fries and drink were $12 until I looked at my bank statment today. I recall in the past dropping no more than $8 for the same food. I understand there are issues with the economy, but geez. I even noticed that it wasn't as busy/packed as it used to be EVERYDAY.
