While I'm mostly here for all things $1.25 and under, I'm also subject (without fail) to a show almost every time. This is far from the cleanest Dollar Tree and it wouldn't hurt to consider a complete overhaul. The parking lot has the kind of potholes would that would make NOLA proud and there's always some kind of odor just outside the doors. In spite of all of this, this location brings the traffic while so many of the other adjacent businesses feel dormant. To call the store a bit unkempt is one thing, but it really does affect the utility since things aren't the easiest to find. Staff is likely understaffed in some way, since there's always a line at the register and very few folks available to help customers find things. As a result, it's a slow burn perusing for anything here. It's mainly seasonal stuff I'm after, along with their balloons and helium. (#1) The part of me that loves people watching can't help but observe the mini-chaos here that happens frequently. I've seen shouting matches, people getting booted, random shoplifting, and kids that are causing a ruckus throughout the store. This could be any Dollar Tree frankly, but this one in particular attracts all sorts of folks from the nearby apartments. I don't think I've ever come a cross a thrift store with this much versatility. Out of the Closet is serious about HIV/AIDS advocacy and they prove it by putting their money where their mouth is. Like many other thrift stores in Montrose, you can expect marked up (but still fair) prices compared to the larger ones with piles upon piles of clothes to sift through. 96% of all proceeds at this store, however, go toward supporting the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Free condoms are offered near the cashier counter; free HIV testing and a not-for-profit pharmacy sits in the back. The roots of thrifting inherently lie in supporting the community. This is usually accomplished through the affordability of everyday items, but this shop takes it to the next level by showing their dedication to safe sex and access to healthcare. This store had some red roses! I bought them all! Other stores had no artificial flowers. I got some autumn colored flowers from the Dollar Tree... And that's about it! This store was also good because it had all of the regular things I look for: greeting cards, reading glasses, and gifts for my nieces! After making a purchase, my mother who had just traveled internationally for nearly 24 hours to visit me wanted to buy another bag as a gift for friends back home. We waited in line again, but the cashier refused the sale because they recognized us from our earlier purchase. However, we saw other customers rejoin the line and purchase additional bags without issue. There were no signs explaining this policy, and it appeared to be enforced only against us. As Asian customers, this left us feeling singled out and questioning whether discrimination played a role in how we were treated. What made the experience even more upsetting was the way we were spoken to. The employee's attitude felt rude and accusatory, as if we were doing something wrong or trying to steal, when we had simply followed the same process as other customers and spent a significant amount of money in the store. We left feeling embarrassed, upset, and unwelcome. I would appreciate an explanation as to why the policy was applied differently to us than to other customers.
