Went there yesterday morning for breakfast. This Cafe was the only place we could find that was open before 8am, that's a good thing for early risers. Best french toast I've ever had. We also ordered the hamburger which was fine and the salmon hash which was HUGE! The hash wasn't as amazing as the french toast but tasty none the less. The service was fast and friendly. The place itself is incredibly cute with outdoor tables if you want to bring Fido with you. Good food, okay service. We walked in as a party of 2 adults and 1 toddler and immediately felt like we were a burden just by being there. We were sat pretty quickly but not offered a high chair for our toddler. The restaurant vibe is a little off. Weird decor, cloth napkins, and loud music with the waitress singing very loudly which was annoying. By reading other comments, this is the owner's granddaughter. I heard another waitress tell the granddaughter that a couple of tables left suddenly who were sitting outside because no one checked on them. The granddaughter said rudely to the other waitress "those are your tables. I'm not allowed to touch them." It sounded like she knew the customers were there and didn't do anything to help them or tell the other waitress they were there. Not a very good way to run a business and a staff. We put in our order rather quickly and I had to ask where our food was after waiting for 45 minutes. The granddaughter apologized and said there was a 10 top and a 5 top ahead of us and all they were waiting for was my toddler's PBJ sandwich. The 10 top was sitting right next to us and they had already gotten their food, ate, and paid by the time I asked where our food was and the 5 top was already eating for 10min by the time I asked about our food. We finally got our food after waiting almost an hour for it. The food was good and thankfully hot when it came out. The granddaughter offered us a free dessert to-go for having to wait so long for our food. Specifically to-go like she didn't want us there anymore. Small little cafe serving up diner specials and family faves. The ladies working here seemed very stressed and short staffed. They were experiencing technology issues as well. The food was good but as long as you come here understanding this is not a fast food joint and it takes time to make your meal. Seating is limited so a party larger than 4 may have to wait a bit for a table. I tried the stuffed French toast with Marionberry and sweet cream cheese. It was good and very filling. I barely put a dent in it. Hubby had the crab cake special. He enjoyed it! We would come back again to try a different item and definitely not on a holiday. (Veterans Day holiday) read more

We stopped in based on a friend's recommendation, and it was definitely a good call! This spot has a wonderfully cozy, "grandma's house" feel with very warm, personal service that makes you feel right at home. I had the crab cake special for brunch, and it was phenomenal, exactly what you want in a crab cake. It was packed with lots of crab and had little to no filler! I love Newport and when I visit, I love Fishtails. My First time here years back. Over the years the HUGE portions have been tamed a bit but the freshness of ingredients stays the same. That goes for the seafood, the breads, and the coffee. We prefer the breakfast vibe here. Where there are ooos and awes as plates make their way through the dining room. For an area that is not known for BBQ, this place contends. Service has consistently stayed family style great no matter what time of day. read more

Horrible, horrible service. My cousin and I came in to have a bite to eat, waitress said sit over there. We sat at a table for 4 as she did not say otherwise. Waited for 15-20 mins, never was approached. No water, nothing. Completely ignored us. We got up to leave and said " would have been nice to be waited in" they both snickered and laughed. We stood crowded in the door frame for about six minutes before the lady at the cash register so much as glanced up at us. They had three available tables so she could have made some form of contact with us so we didn't just stand there awkwardly. She could have even mumbled something so much as " give me a sec guys and I'll be right with you" but we were just ignored. It took fifteen minutes for our order to be taken and that includes drinks. We almost left but we drove all the way here for this breakfast. An hour and seventeen minutes later our food was out. I dig in immediately and it was ice cold. My husbands food was also cold. We had to send everything back to be microwaved. Since the food took so long my husband added clam chowder to his order because it was well passed the breakfast time slot. It also came out cold and we had to have it microwaved. The place wasn't busy and I could tell most of the tables were upset by their conversations. The staff was singing so loudly to the 90's radio station that it felt as if I stepped into a karaoke place. After almost 2 hours ( I'm not exaggerating at all) we paid and left. I don't mind waiting for food but the food shouldn't come out stone cold. One meal being cold is fine but every single item that was ordered having to go back is not good. Staff really needs to be filling your drinks or communicating with the guests better. They either stay in the kitchen or are glued to the cash register. You go very long periods of time without seeing a soul move about the tables. It was good but we agreed that we will be skipping it on our next family trip. According to several locals this wasn't a bad day. The service we received is normal. Not everyone has 2 hours to kill for breakfast. If you have younger kids I would skip it. Everything we ordered was very good, and the clam chowder was great! I'm not a big fan of New England style chowder (I prefer Manhattan) but my wife had eaten here the previous week and raved about the chowder, so three of us ordered cups of chowder. I also ordered a BLT sandwich, my wife ordered garlic bread, and my granddaughter ordered fish & chips. Our 4th, my granddaughter's friend, is not a seafood eater and so ordered a plain hamburger. My BLT had plenty of bacon, and the cheesy sourdough bread was excellent. The cups of chowder were large (in some other restaurants they would pass for bowls) and my granddaughter couldn't start her fish & chips after eating her chowder, but I warmed them up later and they were good. Our drinks (lemonades for the girls, a can of root beer and glass of ice for me) were not refilled for free, but we were told that up front. Our server was very friendly and helpful. She told us she was the chowder chef. Service wasn't fast, but I wouldn't call it slow either. There were tables available inside, but it was a beautiful afternoon, so we chose to eat outside. We decided to get take out breakfast from here. I noticed the menu on the website doesn't have prices but it's possible that they just change quickly. I got the chicken fried steak. Failed the fork test. Very tough meat. Flavorful but definitely need a sharp knife. Also the breading was having some issues adhering. The dish was $3 more expensive than a picture from 8 months ago. Possible tourist tax but pretty steep. The wife got the crab cakes and eggs special. The cakes were good. They kind of had an eggy texture to them. It's different. Maybe not everyone's jam. Again expensive. We also got the pumpkin pancakes. The spices are a little heavy handed and making it a little off putting. I really liked the hash browns. Very thin so they are both crispy and tender. The homemade sourdough was kind of bland. My wife said it had no flavor to it. I got a muffin too. Honestly wasn't a huge fan of this breakfast spot, even as others were raving about it while we were there. Maybe I just didn't enjoy my meal, but I was not impressed. I got the eggs Benedict special (I think it's called an Arnold Benedict?) because I LOVE eggs Benedict, but I did not enjoy this rendition of it. My husband got the famous stuffed French toast and it was sweet and tasty but I'm more of a savory breakfast person. When I think of local restaurant and local flare, I'm thinking this type of restaurant. The interior is eclectic with its decorations. Alaina (sp?) was our server and she was so personable and a compliment to the restaurant. Plus she's a great singer! We asked if we could try their chowder as we had heard it was just made for today. This was by far the top 5 taste-wise and beats the commercial restaurants. They won the Feb people's choice award in the chowder competition. It's creamy, full of tender clams, right amount of seasoning to complement. Top 1 or 2 we've ever tried! Cinnamon roll was tender, heavy on cinnamon (which we love), frosting was sweet but not too much. Westside scrabbler with spinach and sausage and homemade red potatoes - potatoes were hand cut, seasoned perfect, omelet was tender - delicious food! Oyster breakfast, oysters were large, tender and flavorful. Hand shredded potatoes for hashbrowns. Marionberry jam was perfectly tart and sweet. Yum! We loved the cloth napkins that added to the atmosphere. I Loved that the clam chowder didn't have bacon/Pork in it because I for 1. don't eat pork but 2. Great clam chowder doesn't need other meats in it to be CLAM CHOWDER ! Disappointing breakfast @ Fishtails Cafe in Newport, OR. Waitress was obnoxious, loud, and totally oblivious to her customers' needs. Food looked appetizing, but was not. The ham in the omelet wasn't good at all. The salmon in the salmon hash was smothered in sour cream and cheese. I realized the reason for this was because it was very bad. I ate it because 1. We paid for it 2. For the Protein, those were the only reasons. I did not enjoy it. Of course, the waitress did not know this because she didn't care to check on us at all. That also meant we didn't get refills on our drinks. The restaurant itself seemed like a cute, cozy place at first. Such a cute small cafe! Breakfast is served all day and they have complimentary wifi- just ask the server for the password. My friend and I were seated promptly and the food came out fast and hot! The portions are huge and prices are very fair. I would recommend splitting the French toast with someone because it is so rich. Definitely will be back again in the future. read more

The best marionberry pie ever! We had seconds--it was that good! Also, the best fish and chips we've had in decades. The fish was very fresh and light, the batter was super flavorful and complimented the fish. The French fries were great (and I'm not a French fry person). The fish tacos were amazing. So flavorful--a little kick, but the fish was the staring attraction. Service couldn't have been friendlier or nicer. They were busy--and with pie and fish that good--I see why. Starting off on a positive note-the food was excellent. Ambience would have been beyond charming, but the bitterness from the wait staff cut right through it like a knife. We waited to be seated at 230pm. It wasn't busy, but the wait staff told me repeatedly they were "swamped". We waited to be seated. Then an extended time to give our orders. Waitress was so rude to me, in particular. I tried showing kindness and patience, but that just seemed to make her more angry. She seemed to want to argue. She didn't get that from me, but I heard her arguing with the kitchen. My food came out 20 or more minutes after the other person in my party. We had already ordered dessert to go, so I asked her if she could bring out the other person's dessert and they could eat it while I ate my lunch. That totally angered her. She said that would take at least 10 minutes. The other person in my party was upset about it. I told them the waitress was busy and we needed to be patient. Waitress snapped at me across the restaurant and said she was getting it. We never did get it in time for them to eat it during the meal. We went up to pay. Waitress was so sweet to the person in front of me, but when it was our turn, she was again rude as can be. She literally verbally attacked me because my attention was divided between the staff and the person with me. Then she just walked off mid transaction. Our dessert did not have cutlery or napkins. I read other reviews and this looks like an ongoing problem. Maybe Fishtails should look into this further. Newport's town motto is FRIENDLIER. Not everywhere, evidently. read more
