First time here, even though we have driven by many times in the past. On a weekend stay in Yachats, we decided to take the short drive north to Hilltop. Based on the reviews, we decided whichever side we got it would be the baked beans, not the slaw or potato salad. We split the Spicy Chicken Bacon Ranch wrap. It was VERY flavorful! The food was delicious. I had clam chowder and shrimp salad. My wife had crab cakes. Both meals were delightful and reasonably priced for the area. Service was great. Great place to grab lunch on a Saturday afternoon - - especially if you have your puppy with you. This is an order at the counter type of place - - decent sized menu with lots of yummy sounding options. And gluten free buns!!! I ordered the fusion burger and it was huge. My plan was to cut it in half and tackle one side at a time but I failed - - one bite and it was all over the place. Still delicious though. I fully expected Hilltop to be as disappointing as many places have been with minuscule portions, and ridiculously high prices---as is common to our fair Newport area. I was completely wrong about Hilltop! I am still packed from one of the best Paddy Melts on rye. Caramelized onions sweet as honey, two large perfectly cooked burgers, and rye that tastes like rye --- not paper. I would not be ashamed to bring anyone to this eatery. My wife's crab melt was a bit expensive but priced much better than a Georgie's or Moes. She loved it. This and the best baked beans I have eaten anywhere in my 72 years living around this country. Cleanliness of the restaurant was great. Menu was simple and everything looked really good on the menu. Server, was polite and respectful. I noticed on the menu, if you order the basic ham n eggs breakfast with toast and home potatoes it's $16. If you order the same off the ala carte menu it's only $14. Food quality was lacking: Biscuits n gravy were cold and the biscuits were just shy of burnt and crusty on the bottom of them. Potatoes that were served weren't even edible, half the potatoes either were over-held in warmers or were yesterday's potatoes mixed with freshly made today. The texture of half of the potatoes were dried out and horribly stale, other half was pretty tasty. The first time I came here I thought the crab melt was divine, including the sides. No more. Tried to eat there Thursday. There was only one other table occupied. The server warned us not to order a hot drink of any kind because she was the only one there. (!) no matter that it was a cold, foggy, windy, drizzly day. Then the food came. While the crab melt looked fine, it did not seem fresh. But the worst was the potato salad I ordered. She set down a dish of what at first glance looked like sour cream. There were lumps in it that apparently were potatoes. I said I couldn't eat it and she did not acknowledge how gross it looked, just asked if I wanted something else. We were excited to try this place out as it's always talked about. It was nice, cozy, clean, and the waitstaff was kind. The prices were on the steeper side ($18-20 for burgers and $25 for plates). My husband and I each ordered a different kind of burger with a different side (I ordered potato salad and he got coleslaw). For the price, we got a burger on the smaller side and an ice cream scoop worth of our side. We thought, "well it looks great so probably worth it anyway!" Everything was lacking flavor. Very bland. No salt or seasoning whatsoever. The burgers were overdone and burnt and that was the only think we could taste on both the mushroom burger and teriyaki/pineapple burger. There was not even ketchup offered or on the table. Just a blah, flavorless, burnt burger. The potato salad had zero flavor so I loaded it up with salt and then it tasted fine. The cole slaw was very bitter tasting. It was all weird. We really wanted to like this place and have it be our new place to go. But we won't return. Maybe it was a fluke and a bad cook the day we went but we couldn't understand what people were raving about. read more

TBH, we had planned in advance to eat at another place and found it was closed. So we scrambled and decided on Hilltop Cafe Bistro. It's a simple rustic building with a small dining room in two halves, divide by the entrance. We were seated quickly. The menu had starters, sandwiches, pastas, steaks and seafood. The one server kept an eye on all tables and was responsive to all. After answering a few questions we had, she took our order for bbq ribs and a French dip and hot tea. Our food came quickly and was piping hot. The French dip was good and came with baked beans (our choice). The ribs were tender and good. This place is a great stop on your way to Newport. The food is great! The portions are HUGE, and the service is the best. We came here 3 out of our 4 day stay. We loved the breakfast sandwiches, the ham breakfast sandwich was our favorite. Lots of meat. My husband loved the Reuben burger. He got it twice!! The pastrami was super yummy. My wife and I wanted to go for a nice meal this past Saturday night 9/28/24. We have been to the Hilltop a few times before and it was good. Last night the place was crowded but ther were two tables clean and a couple that needed cleaning. We "waited to be seated". After a while the "hostess I guess", a grimacing woman at the counter looked up, held up two fingers, and motioned us to sit a small table right at the entrance. We saw a table over on the wall with 4 chairs that we preferred but it needed to be cleaned, couple glasses, two small plates. So i went up to the counter and asked if we could sit at that table. Still grimacing she said "it is going to be a while as we are very backed up before we can get to it". So, we sat at the very small table by the entrance. I ordered plank salmon with some sort of crab tortellini, risotto, and vegetable of the day. I specified I wanted the salmon medium rare. The waitress acknowledged my request. My wife ordered the rib eye steak with mashed potatoes and again the vegetable of the day. First, the clam chowder was the best for sure...very delicious. But..... Well, the salmon was firm, dry, barely edible. I strongly considered sending it back but we were hungry so we pressed on. The tortellini was dry, overcooked, and flavorless. The vegetable of the day was overcooked limp asparagus. And the risotto unremarkable. The rib eye was not medium rare, well the color was there but it was tough and we wound up taking 70% of it home to our dog. It was very poor quality meat. When she brought the bill, $71.00, I told her the food was NOT good, the salmon and steak were overcooked, my wife still had a large portion of her steak on her plate. The waitress was non-apologetic, mumbled something about being vegetarian and asked if we wanted desert to which we declined. When I went to pay the bill the grimacing faces were multiplied by two. Our waitress ran the card, I gave $7.00 tip which I don't like doing, I am a 20% tipper. The whole experience was not good. Unfriendly, grimacing, staff, total lack of customer service, and lousy food experience. Should have gone to the divey Salty Dawg for sure. I should have sent both meals back, drank our glass of wine and left. I don't know why more of us don't do that. With prices so high these days we as a public should be more demanding. read more

We sat inside because I noticed the outdoor tables are right in the sun without any cover. The hostess was very nice. You have to order and pay right away and then the food is brought to your table. Portions are huge! I loved the potatoes fried with onion. Great flavor but didn't taste freshly made to be honest. Salmon crepes were ok. French toast was 3 gigantic slices and had nice cinnamon flavor. My quiche tasted great, although the crust was pretty greasy. I would order this again, it was very good. Crab Benedict did not impress my husband. He said it lacked flavor. Overall, this was one EXPENSIVE breakfast, but we left full and satisfied. This would be a 5 star restaurant if they focused on quality vs quantity. But honestly, it was a good experience.
