    Salty chowder bowl
    Deb K.

We waited about ten minutes for a menu and the owner and server to decide who would serve us??? Food was so so. Chowder was salty and onion rings were not crisp and didn't have any flavor to them. What was nice was the chowder was hot and it was chilly out. What disturbed me the most was watching the female server scoop the salad onto a plate with her bare hands, wipe them on her jeans, continue to serve others, scratch her arm a few times, and not once wash her hands! They are busy because there's not much choice out here. But I'd avoid if you can wait for a healthier and tastier environment.

Views are so pretty right on the water. We tried a ton of food and the service was quick! I recommend this place to everyone!

This place hasn't changed in about 30 years! I do have to say, they still have the best clam chowder on the coast. I had the bowl and salad combo which was just right for lunchtime. The chowder had a film on top as if it had been sitting a while. It was good though. You could taste the freshness of the clams. Service was to be expected as it is no longer tourist season. There were only two other guests there but the thing that stuck out about the ambiance was the TV in the background. I wouldn't normally mention it but it just stood out a little. Had the volume been lower or muted, it would have been better. Props for keeping the same decor up, and the trains, as I remember from when I was a kid. The Chowder Bowl is an institution of Depoe Bay.

I just noticed two additional fees on my receipt from the Chowder Bowl. 7% for what, credit card processing? That's outrageous.

We came in during the lunch rush. The restaurant was slammed, and they appeared short staffed. I think people were getting irritated. Aaron and Sierra were working the floor. Both of them moved around and stayed upbeat and positive. I commend both of them for their attitudes and customer service. The food was good and the restaurant was clean. It is a nice meal while in Depoe Bay.

Chowder was decent. Bread bowl was pretty good, bread was kinda sweet. Our server didn't have the best attitude and the place was pretty empty.

Good service @ Chowder Bowl in Depoe Bay, OR. We stopped here for drinks after whale watching. There was a cute model train on a track that went around the restaurant. Bartender was friendly and courteous. He served us promptly and helped other patrons get seated, and also cash out their bill.

The menu was good ~ Food was fresh and clean tasting. A bit pricey but for the whale watching view it is worth it. Over the top wine list and a couple local beer brews. Don't waste time trying to park restaurants side and cause a jam; street park and walk a little bit. Busy during peak season so reservations are recommended.

May 2026 Depoe Bay, Oregon…read more Wow! Come here for the views. Absolutely gorgeous. Try and get a window seat. However any seat in the house will be beautiful. I ordered the seafood Diablo pasta. It had so much seafood from the crab, clams, shrimp, and fish. I had seven or eight clams and they give you a dish to put them in after the clam is removed. I was slightly dismayed in that only three of my clam shells had clams. The rest were in the shell and they were empty. The flavor was slightly spicy, and there was so much food. I had plenty of leftovers. My husband had the herb crusted, lingcod. He had mashed potatoes and brussels sprouts in the dish. The food was divine. The fish was tender. And the entire meal was delicious. For dessert, I had the strawberry rhubarb cobbler. It came with a ginormous scoop of ice cream. The cobbler was served warm and it was so much food. We were so pleased with this restaurant. The views were incredible, the food was delicious. Our only complaint is that the hostess had no personality. She ignored us when we came in, dropped us off at our table with the menus and said nothing, then when we left, we said goodbye and she said yup. I think she needs an attitude check from management. Other than our negative encounter with her, this dining experience was darn near perfect. I will give this restaurant 4.9 stars. The small amount was removed because of the hostess.

Nate 2026 Newport, Oregon…read more Came here based on recommendations from somebody in Bend, Oregon, and a local. I will start by saying I was not impressed. We had a reservation and they took us in a few minutes early and sat us upstairs. We sat near the window that overlooks the harbor and could see it from our table. Very pretty. There is a bar area and other tables that are away from the window that don't have the same view. When we were approached by the waitress, she informed us that they were out of Dungeness crab. Our reservation was at 6:15 PM. Seems a bit odd that a town known for Dungeness crab and the restaurant doesn't have it during peak dinner hours. My husband ordered a cup of clam chowder, and I ordered a cup of the Dungeness crab soup. I loved the creaminess of my soup. However, it was not served hot. Also, there were so many shells in my soup that every bite I had to remove one from my mouth. I do believe that the roux sauce had too much flour and was not mixed well. The clam chowder was not creamy, but had a good flavor. Chunks of carrot and celery. Both soups were served with a portion of bread. The bread was good. We shared the salmon dish. We asked our waitress if we could have the peas on the side as my husband has an allergy to peas. She was quick to tell me that there would be no substitutions. I informed her I was merely asking for the peas to put on a separate dish when brought to the table. She said that she would need to clear it with the kitchen first. Apparently, they approved, as the peas were served on the side. We did enjoy the salmon. It is cooked, medium rare. However, the middle of the salmon fillet was more rare. The buttery sauce was delicious and the asparagus was cooked very well. The mushrooms were delicious. The restaurant is very casual. The outside is not much to look at. The service was fine, but not exceptional. The food was good, but my expectations were so much higher for all of the accolades I had heard prior to dining. They add an automatic tip of 20% to every tab. Then on the bill, they politely ask for an additional gratuity. See the picture of the reason for their 20% gratuity on each bill in the photos that I have attached. I would give this restaurant four stars. It is a B rating for what should be an A restaurant.

People who came without a reservation were told that there's about an hour wait or they could sit at the bar level on the first floor. There's also a second bar on the second floor where the main dining room is up a flight of stairs. Service was great and we were lucky enough to sit by the window overlooking the sea lions, the water, and the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Food wise, it was mostly 5 star. I'll start with the thing that wasn't, and that was the deviled eggs (you get 3) with a lightly fried shrimp. The shrimp was overcooked, lukewarm, and didn't really add anything. But other than that, everything else was really good. The highlight was the Umpqua oysters on the half shell. We went through a dozen and a half. The oysters are sweeter, no briny. They're not huge but not tiny either like Kusshi oysters. It came with 3 different sauces. Another highlight was the whole dungenous crab...so fresh. Poke salad, garlic brussel sprouts, Yellowtail Hamachi, and Lingcod were also pretty good. If I'm ever in the area, I would definitely return.
