One of the better places to grab a quick meal in Sidney. They have a wide selection of fish and chip variations including yam fries and real salads. The service is always fast and courteous. The restaurant is usually cold inside so dress warmly in the winter. read more

Stopped by for lunch after get off from BC Ferries. This place is managed by a group of young adults and their food is just fresh and delicious. We ordered fried and grilled Cod and Halibut, both tasted great. We found this location from GPS and will definitely visit there again! read more

Cons: No itemized bill presented to me - just a rushed exchange at the cash register where I was overcharged quite a bit. This place was so awesome! As a family of 6, 4 being teenagers, we loved the atmosphere, the service was amazing - authentic and kind staff - and the food was plentiful and so good. Some of us preferred the good old fried fish and chips, but some of us wanted healthier fare. The grilled salmon and halibut are worth the money and the salads to accompany are plentiful and so tasty. This is a must-go-to. Freshest fish we've had in a long time! read more

The opportunity to eat outside in lovely weather brought us here. The servers were attentive and friendly. These two reasons are why I gave them 3 stars. Unfortunately, they were out of our first three choices on June 30th (fireworks day in Sidney) but we were eating dinner early and would have expected them to plan better and not run out so early! (When you're hungry for fish and chips....) We had grilled fish-- a very small serving-- and french fries. I had the squash soup with coconut and ginger; it was very good. It was just okay. We came from Seattle area and had high hopes! Seaside town, deliciously fresh fish. Hidden gem? Not so much. Fish portion (cod) was big. I should have gotten one piece but luckily my BF ate most of my second piece. I opted for 1/2 salad 1/2 fries for extra money. Kind of a rip but the salad was yummy. Really good. The fries were also really good. I could have not paid extra and gotten fries and coleslaw. The reason for the lower rating was the fish. While it was big, and the the batter was yummy, like tempura, it was super mushy between the fish and batter. Not sure why. It was kind of gross actually. Super soaked in grease. Gave my BF a belly ache later. You can get way better fish at ivars. The tarter was just okay. We sat on the deck. It was okay. There was a pesky bee flying around our mouths and plates while we ate. That was cool...not. After the meal was delivered the waitstaff (teenagers or 20 something's) came by only once early on. Our waters ran dry. We loved this little city but I doubt we'll visit this establishment the next time we visit. read more

The fish is divine!! But if you order one fish, you get one tarter sauce. Although order two fish and you still get one tarter sauce. They insist you pay to receive any extra tarter sauce so it must be worth its weight in gold. I found this pettiness to override the experience of the establishment as there are many other fish places in town just as good. read more

An ok place for quick fish and chips. We have had the halibut good size pieces for the price. The chips however are nothing to call home about Im pretty sure they are frozen. Staff are friendly. Its not always very clean given the quick turn arounds. Good selection of craft beers. We have been back and will continue to go, but it's just ok. read more

Food was okay, service was mediocre. Went there with my mother in law and partner for dinner. my food (chicken strips) came out very dark, i'm assuming because the oil hadn't been cleaned in a while, and the same with my partner, and mother in laws food. Didn't taste bad but it wasn't great. My partners dish was strangely cooked, she had undercooked fries but over cooked batter on the fish same colour as my chicken strips. We had just assumed it was because they were busy and we decided to come back on a slow day. So just my partner and I came back and it was the same thing, batter was very dark again. Service was very mediocre and there was miscommunication with the staff. They tried to over charge us saying we had both gotten halibut when only one of us got halibut and the other got cod. Then they weren't very forgiving with it and almost made us pay for two halibut meals. Luckily the server that served us came walking by and told the person at the till that we weren't lying about it and she put it in correctly. All in all not a fantastic experience, wouldnt recommend this to my friends. read more

I am from San Jose California. My entire family ( 8 of us ) were just stopped in Sidney while on vacation. I am very picky about food and how it's cooked. I'm not often impressed when I go out to eat. Fish on Fifth was recommended to us by some locals so we thought we would give it a try. It's not a fancy place but plenty clean , nice, and very comfortable. From the moment we walked in the service was excellent, and they were already very busy. The food was surprisingly fantastic! Everybody ordered something different. We were all so impressed with our dishes that we wanted each other to try them. It was a fantastic experience and My only regret is that they aren't located where I live! I would frequent them a lot! read more

I went to this childhood favourite today with my young son and in-law. We were seated quickly upon arriving, but things took a bit of a turn from there. We received our water, ordered, received our food and that was the last we saw of the server. They are so worried about turnover that they rushed away before I could ask for more lemons (and I certainly didn't dawdle, she just ran away without so much as an "enjoy"). I drink a lot of water during my meals so I don't expect my glass to be constantly kept full, but I expect a refill at least once during the meal. As no one returned after our food arrived, I only had one glass during the entire meal... Not nearly enough as fried food needs to be washed down with something throughout a meal. The actual food was fair. I tasted my mother-in-laws calamari and it was pale looking and bland to match. It didn't come with lemon which I thought was strange, but whatever. The batter on my halibut was thicker than I like, but the fish inside was admittedly good. However, the fries on my plate and my sons were mostly small and overcooked hard pieces. The 'chips' should be just as important as the fish at a 'fish and chips' place and so that was definitely disappointing. The decor is fun, but the service needs a large boost of attentiveness and the food wasn't anything special. read more

Fish on 5th is adorable! GREAT artsy feel, Trivial Pursuit on the table, as well as diagrams and rope to learn knot tying while you wait for your food. The waitress ("A Lovely Server") was friendly and efficient. The food was YUM! I had Icelandic cod and some chowder and was more than full! Although we enjoyed some of the larger (chain type) restaurants in the area, this was, by far, the most fun. Reasonably priced for large portions, you get a real hometown feel from this little place! read more

Stopped in for lunch today while in the area on business. They have a nice space inside or a lovely patio outside. The staff is really friendly and the food is great! I had the halibut burger, with grilled halibut instead of fried. It was delicious and came with really good coleslaw and fries. I would definitely recommend this place if you enjoy seafood. Especially if you can't eat (or don't like) batter. They offer no-batter fish and chips as well! read more

Fantastic little place, great food and impressive service. We had our later lunch and had planned to catch the bus to the ferry. We missed the bus by 2 minutes and were stranded, the waitress called us a cab, it was going to take 15 to 20 minutes for the cab to come so she gave us a lift to the ferry!!!! Have been coming here for years....was my favourite fish and chip place. Dinner last night was not good. The fish was up to usual standards but the chips were awful, cut in small pieces, hard and overlooked. The coleslaw was unpleasant and when we asked for glasses of water they came luke warm, no ice, tasted like bad tap water. Very disappointed, especially after a rotten week we were both really looking forward to a meal out. Don't think we will be back. read more

Well where do I start, first of all the service we had received was pushy, second of all when we went to pay the bill the machine did not work, the lady gave us two different machines cancelled 2 times via interact, but when we checked our statement the BILL WAS TAKEN OUT 2 TIMES, trying to tell the owners that our money has been taken 2 times, they seemed to think that we were lying or trying to steal from the restaurant. Fortunately, we have our receipts and our bank information, plus we sent statements from our account to the owner per his request showing the withdrawals from our account via email and HAVE NOT received a response from him. We have been calling from another province but just getting the run around from the owners from this restaurant, as a customer and a owner of a company I would never let this get this far, CUSTOMERS ALWAYS COMES FIRST. The attitude from the employee or slash family owner that we have talked to via phone was disrespectful, again as a owner you are never RUDE to a customer. read more
