Fish and chips

We ordered fish and chips but swapped out for grilled fish and clam chowder. The fish came out just seen on picture, rather plain, and the chowder was very bland and not even warm. It's rather disappointing to get uninspired food like this after the rave reviews. Nice service but not the foods .

If your looking for fish and chips, this restaurant will probably be your best option. Fish and fresh and potato soup and yam fries is just

Walked in for the first time and treated with friendly, helpful staff. Very impressed with cleanliness, fast service and the portions are big enough. Not greasy at all, batter was lite and all the beers are local to Vancouver Island. A must when visiting Sidney, BC

Lunch stop in Sidney. 4 stars as long as you: -Stick with the fish and chips or the fish burger. Fish has a crispy, crunchy coating and the yam fries are great with the honey mustard(?) dip. Halibut burger had fresh fish and a variety of veggie condiments (lettuce, dill, etc.) that helps maintain a light, healthy taste. -Stay far away from the clam chowder. The bowl I opted for in lieu of the regular fries had a thick Elmer's rubber cement consistency that would probably best described as thick glop with chewy, tasteless clam pieces. I don't understand how Fish on 5th received an award for this slime. So.... everything seems to be a good choice EXCEPT for the chowder. Service was lacking as well. The place, primarily manned by college students, was half empty but yet it took about 25 minutes to get our food. Drinks were never refilled, the server never stopped by and when asked for more sauce, a stank face was what I got. Really?

3.5 stars We got 2 prices of fries cod, fried yam and 1 piece of haddock Togo. I think it would have tastes better if we ate in. We got the food and drove to Sidney ferry terminal which is like less than 5 mins away. Then we ate them maybe less than 10 mins later. They used paper to wrap the food and you could see a lot of oil seeping through the paper. The crust started to soggy. I think the crust from red fish blue fish was thinner. They gave 2 kinds of sauces. both were very good.

After starving to death (by choice-that ferry food looked and smelled nasty) on the1 1/2 hour ferry…read moreride from the mainland we were ready for some good food. It's in a gas station parking lot attached to the Howard Johnson. Do not let that deter you, it was really solid pub food, definitely better and sustansibly more affordable than any pub I've eaten at in downtown Victoria. Clearly all of the other diners were locals, at 2pm on a Saturday. We sat in a cozy booth in the bar after being greeted by a very friendly bartender. We ordered two pints of Magners, the shepherd's pie with salad and the beef dip with frites. The shepherd's pie was beef, so technically a cottage pie, which I prefer. It came piping hot, with little scoops of mash on top and a dark colored gravy. Perfection, meaty, creamy, cheesy deliciousness. The salad was quite nice with field greens, cherry tomato halves, carrot, cucumber and green onion with housemade basalmic vinaigrette. The frites were of the super crispy possibly breaded variety, really excellent dipped in the au jus that came with the roast beef dip. I'd definitely come back on my next visit to get really good Irish pub grub without all the touristy prices.

Rabin was very efficient and attentive a most delightful waiter, we were very pleased with him. I realize Ten Acres is separate from Pier Hotel but we were surprised that the girl serving in the Bar was very naked at the back also wearing jeans. A very bad advert for the Pier Hotel usually staff are dressed like that in lower class restaurants. The waiters were dressed very smart. We are from Toronto. E. Y.

This visit was deeply disappointing and nowhere near the standard this restaurant once maintained…read more I dined here in November 2024 and had an excellent experience, which is why I confidently recommended it for a lunch outing. Based on this most recent visit, that confidence was misplaced. My meal was served on a visibly dirty plate. That is not a minor oversight -- it is a fundamental failure. Cleanliness is the bare minimum in food service, particularly at nearly $30 per entrée. There is no justification for serving food on a dirty dish. I later felt unwell, which only heightened my concern about overall hygiene practices. The food itself did not justify the pricing. The lamb burger was dry and lacked the juiciness one would reasonably expect, even with tzatziki. The fries were low-grade and out of place for a restaurant positioning itself at this price level. Premium pricing demands premium execution. That standard was not met. The revised dining layout also detracts from the experience. The high tables and chairs create an uncomfortable and less welcoming atmosphere. Notably, during our visit, no guests chose to sit at them -- everyone gravitated toward standard seating. That alone speaks volumes. Restoring the previous table configuration would significantly improve comfort and ambiance. The service was equally underwhelming. At this price point, guests should receive attentive, polished, and genuinely welcoming service. Instead, both the waitress and food runners appeared disengaged. When customers are spending this much, attitude and professionalism are not optional -- they are expected. After returning home, I reviewed feedback from the past year and was struck by the consistency of similar complaints. The pattern is clear: standards have declined. This establishment was once very good. It is capable of better. However, until cleanliness, food quality, atmosphere, and service standards are brought back to where they were, it cannot justify its pricing. At this level, "acceptable" is not enough. The standard needs to be significantly higher.
