by far the best Chinese food in Sidney. Everything is tasty and fresh. They will custom dishes to your liking. Polite and friendly people.

I dined at this restaurant today and had a very terrible experience. At the time, we were the only Asian guests in the entire restaurant. It took calling the server three times before she came to take our order. During the meal, when she was helping to portion the wontons for us, she deliberately spilled a large puddle of soup on the table. After serving, she walked away without making any effort to clean it up. I stopped her and politely pointed at the puddle on the table, asking if she had any napkins. She handed me three napkins with a blank expression, threw them down, and left without cleaning the table, and without even offering a simple apology. However, she was very warm and attentive toward the other nearby tables, and when serving them, there were no issues like spilled soup. Her behavior, which appeared to involve racial discrimination, seriously affected my dining experience. Therefore, I left her a zero tip and truthfully wrote about my experience on the app. What makes it even more absurd is that this was a Chinese restaurant. read more

I've been coming to Good Fortune for many years and love their food! Especially their Good Fortune Chow Mein and their Pan Fried Prawns!

This place is delicious, consistent, and the owners are so friendly. I have been coming to Victoria for years and always have to make a stop in Sidney for ginger beef at this restaurant. Reasonably priced, clean environment, and great service. They even pour soup and serve shared food onto personal plates for you. Take out is also a great option. Picked up egg rolls which we couldn't eat as the grease was dripping off them, next was chicken chow mein which consisted of noodles only no onions or anything else I could have bought a pack of noodles at the grocery store and put them in water exactly the same, it had the weirdest chicken on top of the noodles like white pieces of something that didn't resemble chicken, I did call to the restaurant and they assured me it was chicken breast, i have never seen chicken breast that was so white... so didn't eat it. We loved their food until today. Ginger fried beef and chop suey were delicious. BUT. The deep fried wonton was wonton WRAPPERS, not an ounce of filling. Really?? Sauce was tasty but don't waste your money on greasy chips. Almond chicken was all breading, very little chicken. Stick to the non deep fried stuff! read more

Bizarre they only sell egg drop soup for 2 people but wonton for 1. They are not accommodating as I didn't want breaded almond chicken and they couldn't do it. Egg rolls were horrible. Very disappointing. read more

We picked up a meal of four dishes last night. Absolutely excellent food! Peppered beef, sweet and sour pork, vegetable rice, chicken chow mein. it was ready right on time, hot, nicely packaged and everything cooked just right. It honestly pains me to right this review as this restaurant has been a staple in my wife's family for years. They have recently changed locations, and I would love to say that this is the reason why I wrote this, but it's not. First, it is extremely difficult to get through to this restaurant by phone... they have no call waiting and it's just plain frustrating. For years I have felt moderately underwhelmed, but we keep going because my wife's family loves the people that own the restaurant. And so they should, they are great people. That being said, the food has taken a decidedly southward turn over the years. First, I'll say the ginger beef and the fried rice are still some of the best. But... there are so many areas where you feel you are missing out on value. In the last 2 weeks, due to Coronavirus quarantine, we have ordered Good Fortune Chinese food twice. The first time we ordered the chow mein, the beef and gailan, and the sweet and sour pork. All three were actually just plain bad. The beef was slimy, the chow mein was watery and the pork was mush. Just bad. We also had the wonton and thankfully, that wasn't bad at all. The second time we ordered the Wor wonton and were totally disappointed to see that the wontons they put in it were less than half the size of the regular wonton. We also ordered the egg rolls and, no word of a lie, they were only 1/4 filled at best. It was almost all soggy egg roll with virtually no filling. I don't like getting ripped off and the last two meals felt like I was being taken advantage of by a restaurant that knows we have limited options right now. For the foreseeable future, we will no longer be ordering from Good Fortune; our hard earned money is far too valuable to spend on sub par takeout. Sorry Good Fortune, we tried... for a very long time. read more

This has for many years one of my favourite restaurants; the food is great;the servers are amazing. BUT tonight I visited their new location. It is beautiful and stylish but SO noisy it was very hard to enjoy the dinner. Sadly I shall have to give them up. read more

Not the worst I've ever had but far from the best. The egg rolls have almost nothing inside them, it's just the shell that disintegrates when you bite into it. The almond chicken was so oily and deep fried. Some of the things we ordered were ok but definitely wouldn't order again. read more

I don't want to lower it to 2 stars because I really want to like this restaurant so consider my review 2.5 stars because the service and speed is outstanding. They were mad busy when I visited around dinner time. The phone would not stop ringing and a stream of people came through the door as I waited. Unfortunately, not being a local it's going to take some time to discover the source of the hype. I'm sure it's just a case of picking the wrong item off the menu. My favorite dish for a plane ride is fried rice. You can compact it, it doesn't go bad right away, it can be consumed slowly with chop sticks and it tastes damn good! But I'm going to have to qualify that because the shrimp fried rice I took out from Good Fortune didn't taste damn good or even good. They handed it to me very quickly and I walked it back to the hotel full of anticipation. They serve it in those aluminum pie pan containers with the paper cover which doesn't hold up very well in a paper bag so BYOC (I really do!). Their version consists of peas, white rice and little tiny shrimp. That's it. I tasted a little bit of salt, but overall, very bland. You get what you pay for at only $6 but after picking out the shrimp, I pitched it in the trash can. Me sad. read more

GOOD FORTUNE RESTAURANT = MISFORTUNE DINING Several weeks ago my mother 94 and daughter went for the second time to the "Good Fortune" restaurant - the result of a pretty good meal we had there about a month earlier. Firstly I want to say this is the first ever restaurant review I have ever written, I am not a complainer by nature and will eat at average restaurants if the service is good but the bizarre experience from our second visit demands sharing. At Chinese restaurants my meal of preference is salt and pepper squid. This dish is kind of like Chinese french fries for the lack of a better description because it is such a common staple that is served the same way everywhere given slight variations. I'm a senior and have eaten it for over 40 years. We had it served at "Good Fortune" on our first visit and my daughter and I had quite enjoyed it so we were looking forward to having it again. When our waitress brought the dish to the table it was covered in wet vegetables - kind of like french fries covered in wet vegetables - you know something is wrong. I told our waitress that we had ordered salt and pepper squid and she said "I know, this is it" - I replied "that is not salt and pepper squid" she said "yes it is" and at that point we entered into another dimension. The dimension of "alternate truths" if you will. I told her there are no sauteed vegetables on top of salt and pepper squid - the dish is meant to be crispy fried squid with a sprinkling of finely diced red and green peppers on top with a few chilli flakes to give it heat. Her reply was that they put sauteed vegetables on top. I said that a month earlier we had received in her restaurant the same dish done properly and suggested maybe they had a different chef on duty. "NO!" she replied getting emphatic with me "we do not make it another way!". I was a little taken aback by her aggressive insolence and in as much calling me a liar - my daughter piped in and said to her "we did have it the correct way the last time we were here" again she told us we were wrong. We had tables of customers around us and I did not really want to make a scene and disturb their evenings out but the overt rudeness of our waitress was getting under my skin. To her credit she offered to have the dish re done but when I said "not to do it unless you do it properly otherwise I am not interested - please just take it off of our bill". She stormed off. I GOOGLED salt and pepper squid and the resulting images of which there were hundreds did not show a single one with sauteed veggies on top. When she came back to the table I showed here quietly the photos of what we had expected to receive and I thought she would say "oh that dish I must have misunderstood you" but it was not meant to be and she said again "NO!" and went on to say her parents own the restaurant and she has worked in it for 22 years. I told her I had been in food and beverage industry for 26 years and had ordered this dish a hundred times or more and couldn't believe she was in disagreement. So we decided to agree to disagree. We did not enjoy the balance of the meal as the sweet and sour dish was served with sliced uncooked carrots on top and the usual thick red sweet and sour sauce was a watery pink flavorless disappointment. In summation they got 2 of 3 dishes terribly wrong and and our "experienced waitress" was arrogant and rude - RARE IN THE EXTREME FOR CHINESE SERVERS - who are generally top notch. I think maybe after 22 years it's time she give another career some serious thought. We are done with this restaurant to be certain - there are too many good ones around to warrant giving them another chance. I suggest a name change from "Good Fortune" to "Misfortune" Conversely if you like your salt and pepper dishes buried in sauteed vegetables and arguing with the servers I give "The Misfortune" a 5 Star rating. read more

I went for a nice Chinese dinner at the Good Fortune restaurant with a friend yesterday and was very disappointed. Although the food presentation and the restaurant was lovely, the food itself told a different story. My meal started with wonton soup and they tasted of freezer burn. An omen of the rest of the meal to come. A couple of dishes we ordered had shrimp/prawns and though they looked good were cooked to perfection their veins were not removed. So we were served shrimp/prawn poop! I spoke to our server about them and I was told that 'the cooks don't remove the veins'. I felt 2 things at that moment- queasy and angry. I felt like we had been treated contemptuously. I know the cooks are busy. I get it. But if they are too busy to devein their shrimp they can get them already deveined. Heck I can even go to Walmart and get deveined shrimp. If they are going to cut corners there are better options. I would like to see their cooks take some pride in serving real quality and beautiful meals. They have so much potential but what we were served instead was 'good enough'. I did not make a scene for the sake of my friend but I and my large family and friends will not be patronizing this restaurant anymore until they take more pride in what they serve- and devein their shrimp/prawns! read more

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Remember that scene from A Christmas Story where they all end up having 'Christmas Duck' in the local Chinese Restaurant. Remember all the warm and fuzzy feelings it drums up just watching it. Remember the desire to run out and get 1950s Chinese food right after. This is the place! SERVICE: Excellent. The staff here works under enormous demand and a constant stream of customers for both dining in and take out at peak hours. Always polite and seems to intuatively know what you are going to order before you do. FOOD: Yummy! Lots of the usual traditional North American Chinese dishes served with as much sauce as you can handle. Also offers some more authentic dishes as well for the more discriminating taste. My mouth hasn't met a dish there it doesn't like. My only small criticism is that they don't serve the traditional .50 cent egg rolls. PRICE: Reasonable and worth every penny. BOTTOM LINE: This place doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. If you want a small town Chinese restaurant which still serves up dishes the old fashioned way then head here and be prepared to leave satisfied. read more

Living in a small town can inevitably be limiting if you enjoy dining out. And....two things are fundamentally important to one's enjoyment of said small town....good Pizza and good Chinese. Thankfully, Sidney has more than acceptable, as matter of fact they have down right great Chinese in the Good Fortune Restaurant. Thankfully as well, for we certainly didn't find good pizza in the year we have been here. As our time in Sidney comes to a close, I will say that I am going to miss Good Fortune. The Wor Wonton Soup was a staple in our house on cold and blustery winter evenings, and when it came to the care and keeping of out of town guests, Good Fortune was always on the itinerary! Table service in the restaurant is definitely the better choice when not in the mood to eat in front of the TV in your PJ's, and there is ever a great compliment of friendly staff to ensure a pleasant and even entertaining dining experience...would LOVE it if they'd come to Sooke :) Their Ginger Beef is the best I've ever had, bar none, Beef and Broccoli is always fresh and nummy. Crispy Noodles are topped with a massive amount of all the good stuff one would hope to find on crispy noodles, and the Kung Pao Chicken does pack a punch. The only thing I haven't been happy with is their egg rolls, but that's because I'm a Spring Roll girl, always have been, always will be!! The only reason the Good Fortune doesn't get a 5 Star review is because their take out can be inconsistent, and they don't always get my "no onion" thing right. May 12, 2017. Time for an update. I have done grab and go for 1 or 2 several times, since my first encounter. Recently did a dinner for 6 where 5, being Chinese food junkies from out of town, had not experienced the Good Fortune. It was up to my expectations and the rest of them? Well, REALLY impressed. Everyone agreed, it is very hard to beat. ----------------------------------------------------- My original review... This is as good as any western style Chinese restaurant I have been to. I could tell by the number of repeat customers (most of whom the staff knew by name) this must be a good spot. Great service, very friendly staff and really fresh well prepared food. This is pretty typical small town Canada Chinese inspired fare with oddly thick sauces and very few seasonings. Its fine for taking your Grandparents out but nothing to write home about. If you don't eat traditional Chinese food on a regular basis this might not offend you, but I found it bland and suspected most things had slid out of a plastic bag into the wok. Meh. read more

Went to good fortune rest for my daughters birthday. We were through the door shortly after 4 p.m. when they opened so we could enjoy a leisurely evening of dining and be on our way as we planned to move on to my 91 year old mothers residence for dessert etc. Took at least 30 minutes for the server to come to our table to take our order and get our beverages after we were seated. Watched the staff visiting with each other at the front while we waited. The restaurant slowly filled up over the next 45 mins to an hour and we watched as the other customers got served fairly promptly while we continued to wait for our meal. We had ordered dinner for 6 plus a separate dish for 2 in our party as they are vegan/vegetarian. After about 1 hour and 15 minutes we had only been served our won ton soup and had not yet been served the rest of our meal so approached one of the staff and asked if we could get the rest of our dinner. One course of the dinner for 6 came out shortly after (nothing yet for the vegan/vegetarians) and then nothing for another 1/2 hour. There were approximately 6 different dishes listed on the menu for the dinner for 6. We watched as other in the restaurant were served and some had finished their dinners and left. We finally decided to ask for the rest of our meal to be prepared as take out and leave due to the unacceptable service. Approached the manager to explain our disappointment over the service we received and she refused to listen, explaining that it was our responsibility to let the server know that we had somewhere to go. The manager simply refused to accept that their service was unusually slow. After paying for the dinner, we left the restaurant 1 hour and 40 minutes after receiving only wonton soup and one plate out of the six dishes of our dinner for 6 (and nothing for vegan vegetarian part of our party). When we arrived at home and had the remaining take out portion of the meal, we found the food was average at best and the dish prepared for the vegetarian/vegan members of our party was not edible due to the HEAVY dose of hot pepperflakes that were added to the dish. We are generally very easy people to please and NEVER complain about service or quality of food. Unfortunately this ruined our daughters birthday dinner and will be remembered for some time. Most upsetting was the refusal of the manager to accept any responsibility for this experience. Should note that we did not provide a tip, which we have NEVER done previously. read more

Had read previous reviews and took a chance. Disappointed in the dry garlic ribs as there was too much batter on them as well as the sweet and sour pork and could not eat them. The fried rice was fine. Had chicken chow mein and was also disappointed. They had used thin slices of process chicken. May try one more time as this was take out so perhaps being in the restaurant the food may be better. The service was great however. read more

Chinese food is my favorite kind of food and among the eight regional cuisines that are found in China, Cantonese is my favorite. Good Fortune is a Cantonese restaurant with a really incredible list of Szechuan dishes. The food is better then any other Chinese restaurant that I have ever been to and they just added new things to their menu. All of the ingredients that they use are fresh and the service is great. When ordered, the delivery is always quick, even on a Friday or a Saturday night. Also the food is much lighter then at most places. This place also has the lowest prices in Sidney of any actual restaurant. This is easily my favorite restaurant. read more
