(Take out) The food was barely above room temperature, and that from a person who doesn't eat really hot food. I should have guessed when they said it would be ready in ten minutes. Was it prepared fresh or taken from the buffet? I've never had chinese food so cold. The S&S chicken balls were salty (and cold). The pan fried dumplings I think were deep fried. The house special chow mein had only baby translucent shrimp and chicken in it, nothing else and no veggies unless you count the bean sprouts and some julienne carrots. Certainly not special. So disappointed. And all that with 2 egg rolls for $54. I won't go back. Good Fortune on Third St is much superior. Had food there several times, always good. read more

This was a very disappointing experience for my husband and I. Always go with you 1st instinct. We weren't greeted warmly by the owners, which was our 1st clue. As well traveled African Americans we're used to fine dining, and being welcomed at restaurants. It was evident they rarely host Black diners, and tried to contain they're disappointment when we walked in. The food was tasteless, and the customer service was terrible. I shouldn't have to hunt the waiter down for napkins, and other basic dining items. In conclusion, the owner had the audacity to challenge my husband on the amount of the tip he graciously offered. I responded with your ungrateful and racist attitude was the reason for tip amount. To the other dining establishments in Sidney, please respect all people of color. I arrived in Sidney on a corporate trip after a very long and exhausting day of travel from Texas. I finally settled at the hotel and decided to step out to see what in the area to grab a bite. I came across this restaurant. The attitude when greeted was not welcoming and highly unpleasant but I needed something to eat so I ordered and got my food to go. They were in such a rush for me to leave with 30 minutes to go before closing and other customers still dinning in the restaurant. I got back to my hotel only to find that I only received the chicken, no rice, no silverware. Absolutely nothing to eat the food with. I'm highly disappointed but I guess I should expect it considering the level of customer service I received. I don't recommend just based on the customers service and no care at all. A waste of time and money since I could barely eat the food due to lack of utensils. Update: I called the restaurant to inquire about the rice and was told that it's not included. They only offer a main course. I've not experienced this before but there's always something new to learn. Second, I mentioned that I did not receive any utensils and the response was, "you should have told me." I didn't I need to ask for utensils to eat with as well as napkins. Saying that I was staying at the hotel would have made a difference, apparently. You live and you learn. read more

Clearly a popular spot in Sidney. While I'm not impressed, that doesn't mean you shouldn't come here. THE ROSES: Great location, wonderful staff, fair prices for what you're getting. THE THORNS: This is a very typical 'westernized Chinese'-style restaurant of the type that has been in North America for nearly a century. While nothing is clearly awful, nothing on the menu is particularly spectacular either. Everything here is executed in a workmanlike fashion, but that's about it; not bad, but not great. THE VERDICT: Solid, if unspectacular player. Come in with low expectations, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. If you're just hungry for some 'gringo' Chinese chow, you'll love this place. If you're looking for something more sophisticated, like you'd find in Richmond BC, not so much. Overall, I do recommend on its own merits. read more

Quick, convenient and simply good food in Sidney, BC. Not a large selection to choice from in Sidney and as I like to choose what I eat, this seemed to be the best choice for the location. Clean, friendly, courteous staff and great price for what you get. Go early as sitting can be difficult, plus with the regular senior crowds this place actually gets very busy. Heading off the BC ferries and heading into town, my family and I were looking for a little place for lunch. Let's face it: this is not a large restaurant but I can tell you that for size, this restaurant makes up for coziness. I love the decor of the restaurant and reminds me of home. This restaurants boasts some of the largest variety of Chinese home cooked dishes. From chow mein, fried squid, to even general tso's chicken, this place has it all. My favorite dish here has to be the deep fried squid. Seasoned to perfection with the right crunchy texture, not even a touch of chewy. I'm going to be honest here, the dessert area of this buffet is not up to par with the rest of the restaurant. They have jello, unpeeled bananas, and watermelon. The best part of this restaurant, has to be with the customer service. The owners are kind and very polite and clear your dishes quickly- My type of place! We have been visiting and ordering here for 3 years now since we move here in the Island. We are loyal to this location, my husband who is a Caucasian, he had been treated with the most excellent customer service. Everytime he goes in for a dinner take out, he is telling me how good the owners are and we've been going to this location twice a month with the minimum purchase of atleast $60-70 each time because of how nice they are. Until today, since my husband is always having a nice experience, we decided to have a Family Day take out after a day at Butchart Garden with our family friends who came for a visit from Edmonton, Alberta. This time it was me who went in, I am Asian and so as my friend, Filipinos. We went in and order two separate meals worth atleast $50 each. My friend and I ask politely for cutleries and paper plates and napkins on the side as we wanna eat in the park with the rest of the families with our children. The lady owner said they do not have plates and they charge $1 each for styro foam container, we agreed to that and it's fine. While waiting, the guy owner rudely said, "sit down over there, please move out of the way and wait in the corner while pointing to the chairs in the corner". My husband said, he was never ask to sit down on the side like that. Me and my friend felt awkward about it but sat down anyway. When the food arrive, we stood up and my friend ask for extra spoon and fork, the guy owner is mumbling "oh my god, oh my god" went to the kitchen, came back and said "my wife gave it already". So my friend said, it's only four fork, we need four more plus spoons. He then said, no no, no spoon. He did not give additional spoon and fork for the family of 7 people in total with the total order of $109.00. I myself asks politely as well for Napkins, he said "Go to the other store and buy Napkins". I ask again because I was in disbelief of what he said, and he repeatedly said " Go to next door and buy Napkins". So I said to him, you know my husband is the one who always comes in and order and you gave him cutleries and napkins no issue, but he shushh us and said "go go go go". He is very rude and yelling at us, I did not understand why he was like that the whole time, me and my friend went in to order food and we were very polite inside the restaurant. I work in the Hospitality myself and my friend as well, we are a family of professionals and I have never encountered such a disrespectful business owner such as the one in Sidney Harbour Chinese Restaurant, Victoria BC. Sad to say we are not coming back and supporting your local business anymore. You have the most disgusting attitude one can ever experience on a Family Day! A few minutes later, since we were still park outside the restaurant, me, my friend and my husband saw this Caucasian guy came out the Sidney Harbour Chinese Restaurant, Victoria BC with lots of Napkins with his order. We will never again go back to youur location, please change your attitude and I hope you treat everyone fairly, we felt like what happen to us is a reverse racism, it is weird, awkward and uncalled for. This is just the sort of restaurant I look for: a no-frills ethnic spot with little ambience, good food and value for money. We stopped in for the lunch buffet on our way to the ferry and were very pleased. The buffet had the standard fare (pork fried rice, ginger beef, sweet and sour pork, noodles, etc.), but it went a step beyond. There were several vegetable dishes and lightly fried yams. There was also a lovely salad bar, with fresh fruit and two soups as well. None of this would have mattered, though, if the flavour and quality weren't there. They were. The only quibble is that we had to ask for a hot sauce. This is not a high-end eatery, so don't walk in with that expectation. It is, however, a great stop if you want good food at a reasonable price. My kind of place! read more

This was a trip down memory lane to the Chinese Smorgasbords of my youth .... the Rickshaw, the Dragon Inn... not the 50 + dishes of the modern "cool" pan-Asian Buffet of today with Gas Station Grade Sushi, but 12 identifiable dishes: fried rice, chow mein, sweet and sour pork, deep fried prawns, spring rolls, ginger beef and a few more favorites with a salad bar, soft drinks, and dessert. $17.95. The place is clean, bright and decorated with a tasteful oriental flourish of the 60's before Asian Fusion was cool. The hosts courteous and the service friendly and efficient. Now if someone could just explain to me what Fun Mein is? :-) read more

Impulse visit on a national holiday and it was busy at 6:15pm. That's a good sign overall, but that meant an ultimatum from the host - table available if you will vacate by 7pm as a bus tour has a reservation then. Wha? In Sidney? This is not a large buffet. It's a typical Island small-options, good efforts all-you-can-eat buffet. Three islands. That said, my partner agreed all the hot table meats, fried foods, vegetables, appy and rice dishes are fresh and clearly get a lot of turnover, as the restaurant is busy. A lot of battered, fried or salty options. They are fresh tasting and not soggy. No local seafood, fish or crab, but price would go up. It appears you can order more fresh stuff, fish, seafood and clam options a la carte off menu - based on a banquet of Chinese folks in the front window table. The dessert island has the usual jello choices - coconut jello is the treat - and shipped in dessert bars, plus a variety of fresh fruit. Hard boiled eggs and green salad is mixed in this station for some reason. No lo fun fortune cookies on exit. $16 dinner price, plus tax. A hurried environment, not much atmosphere, people watching is entertaining. I dunno, it's not worth it, but it's a craving once in awhile if in Sidney. . . . read more

Worst customer service ever. The other night I walked in and got greeted by one of the staff yelling at me "Pick up food first!!" and pointed at the buffet section. So I told him I would like to order through the menu and had to ask again for the menu after I sat down. After a minute other lady came to ask if I was ready. I told her I would need a few more minutes then she gave me an attitude and said "don't you see we're very busy tonight? i'll come back in 1 minute and have your order ready!!". I don't know about other people but I come for a dinner NOT to get YELL AT by a waitress. read more

If your looking for some salt pepper squid a few wontons and some wicked BBQ fried rice then this is the place to be in Sidney! Lol. I thinks it's super solid. I get it. It's not Richmond. It's not this beautiful over the top Chinese restaurant but as a whole the foods good. There's always people in it and the lady that I see there all the time. Rocks! So what can I say. Food service and only place in town!! Doesn't deserve less then three stars. Let's put it that way. It is what it is and what it is is a great greasy ol buffet! Lol. They don't pretend to be anything else so givin one and two stars and commenting that it's not High end Chinese isn't fair to these people. Well, I suppose I could go 2.5 but I really feel the need to temper the review by Ant O. Sidney needs the tourists and an over the top review, which may draw people in, is a disservice to the town. Ant, this little steam table restaurant is not a five. Not even close. And look at the google reviews...really high but the reviewers have not reviewed ANY other places...none! Something fishy here and it ain't the bully base. Anyway, $16 for a half dozen very ordinary, all you can eat selections, turns into $25 out the door. Maybe I'm spoiled by Vancouver steam tables with 3-4 times the selection for less. And, you have to wonder how fresh the food is when it has been out all day with only a few customers. OK, the lunch selection is smaller and cheaper and maybe they have to jack the dinner price to cover all the lunch stuff that might have been tossed. Very, very average, at best. Hail, you can get better Chinese food at the Save On deli. So many better choices for Asian food in Sidney and really folks, just walk around the corner to the Good Fortune on Third Street for boss Chinese. Hands down best chinese in sidney. This place is wonderful, the staff remembers who I am and has the same table if possible for me every time I come in. Really friendly, food is delicious and at the front counter they have really good after dinner candy that you can nab one of em, its a chinese guava candy, really yummy. The worst chinese food I have ever had! Bland and tasteless! Very small amounts of food put out for the very small buffet. Service was terrible and they are very rude. We weren't even finished eating and they literally took our plates away telling us to hurry because they had to make room for a chinese tour group that were coming in. Rude!
