Fried Ginger Beer
Tee E.

Was driving by and stopped in for some fried ginger beef. The restaurant itself looks clean enough? Until you look up. They never peeled the plastic off the tbar ceilings, it's crumpled, wrinkled, stained, and dirty. The plastic just dangles. The emergency exit sign is wrapped in plastic wrap for some reason? The food itself is alright. The fried ginger beef is written on the menu as spicy, but there isn't a hint of spice to balance out the sweetness of the dish, which is quite unfortunate. The meat is well cooked, and the pricing was acceptable for what I received.

Sweet & Sour Lean Pork

Typically I get my food from Halibut House but I called and requested take out. I am not disappointed. The portions are fair for the price you pay compared to other restaurants, plus 10% off. I think I found my new Chinese spot and I couldn't be happier. I am very happy with the Shanghai Noodles. Yum!

Ginger beef (not great), Shanghai noodles (bland) and a veggie dish that was terrible we hardly ate any.

The food here was ample but bland. I was hoping for really good ginger beef but it was not, sadly. We ordered a noodle dish as well and it was bland. I will not be back.

This was recommended by the concierge at our hotel. Oh boy was it good. Standard sweet and sour and fried rice dishes. Delivery guy was nice.

FOOD Stir-Fried Dried Green Beans ($19.95) The winner is this category would be Tropical Island Restaurant on Shelbourne; however, The Cozy Place offering would be close behind it. Decent with some crunch still; you can get it spicy or not. Ma Po Tofu ($19.95) You can order it meatless or minced pork; it's somewhat authentic. It does have some heat to it (for those sensitive to spice); however, it's pretty solid! === 3. SERVICE Service was good and professional on call-in, payment, wait, questions around the menu, and when the order was ready. English was fluently spoken by the lady working the front and the man cooking the dishes behind her. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's a long, narrow restaurant - your group of 6, maybe 8 could fit at one table in the front. For everyone else, you're accommodated in tables of 2's or 4's along the wall. If bringing a wheelchair or baby stroller, I would stick to the table in the front. Parking is all metered on the street - note that the city has their parking enforcement office basically across the way working until 8pm, so put payment into the meters upfront even if you're coming by to do a quick pickup!

FOOD We've tried a variety of things and overall it's been solid: - Chicken Corn Soup ($12.95): solid choice - Mushroom, Peas, Egg Drop Soup: ($11.95): even better! - Dumplings (10, $12.95): nice and meaty. - BBQ Pork Chow Fun: good pork, wish there was more pork; noodles OK. - Beef & Broccoli ($18.95): feels pricey but it's solid. - Assorted Meat Chow Fun ($17.95): best value if you're doing noodles! - Prawns & Snow Peas ($19.95): good option as an entree! - House Special Chop Suey ($15.95): I guess it's supposed to be veg with some meat? === 3. SERVICE We've never dined in; only gotten takeout - but the service has always been good. Like other Chinese restaurants in Victoria, the time indicated for our order to ready seems to be a lot longer than say Vancouver, Toronto, or even Honolulu. But everyone answering the phone and serving at the counter speaks English well and it seems like they can speak Mandarin also. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's spartan in a good way - big, open, and clean without the gaudy overly-Chinese decor that often accompanies the Chinese restaurant stereotype. A large fish tank at the front (likely for Feng Sui purposes) offers some distraction for younger kids. Those with wheelchairs and baby strollers should have not challenges here. The complex they are in seems to have plenty of parking - we've never seen the lot full, so that helps if you're driving!

Iffy service, pretty solid food…read more My family and I weren't feeling any of the nearby restaurants at our hotel. Then we decided to visit the small Chinatown in the Victoria area. To make our 3-hour visit there worth it, we wanted to have dinner here, and I don't regret finding this place; it was awesome eating here! The inside is mildly bright with many tables for seating but it also feels oddly quiet inside given the number of people inside (it was halfway to a full house). You'll also see some wall decorations and figures at the front. Service here was pretty slow; it took 15 minutes for my mom and sis's dishes to come out, and nearly 25 minutes for the first portion of my dish. Sometimes my server was pretty busy to take some of my requests like getting a spoon or the check. As for my food, I got the traditional Crossing the Bridge rice noodles, with the standout items being the Yunnan pork and raw pork for me. My ingredients for this dish came out in 25 min, with the soup and coming out 10 minutes later and the noodles following a couple minutes after that. With the way everything but the noodles were being brought out, I was worried the soup would start getting cold by the time I threw everything else into the soup. Looking past all of that, the whole thing was actually delicious! Soup wasn't sour and instead felt very homely, and the amount of ingredients was perfect. The soup wasn't in any sort of stone pot to keep it really hot, but everything ended up being fully cooked before i started eating. Others things to mention: - We got two orders of wonton soup. These don't include noodles, and the wontons looked pretty bland even though they're actually full of taste. - My mom's zhajiang noodles came in soup, which is definitely a first since I usually see it without. - Portions in general are quite small though they aren't as expensive when looking between CAD and USD. I'll mentally add this place to my list of places to revisit whenever I'm back in Victoria!
