Authentic chinese food and overall experience was positive. We called 2 hours ahead for the Peking Duck, but it tasted over crispy and flash fried from the freezer. Do not recommend. One of the worst food I've ever eaten. Everything we ordered was terrible and questionable. This isn't Chinese food, it's just disgusting. My son wanted sweet and sour pork and it came out looking like flaming hot Cheetos color- hot pink/purple. We were scared to eat it along with most of what we ordered. Found this spot on a whim and it's a hidden gem!!! Got the half order Peking duck with the tortilla wrap and ohhhhhh boy was it good. On top of that we had the black bean noddles, wonton soup and greenbeans with ground pork. Everything was amazing!!!! Service was fast and the owner was very polite (there was 2 other parties of 3 and 7). Highly recommend getting your Asian fix here or just simply try the Peking duck. You won't regret it. read more

We heard that this place was great and so we got a half order of the Beijing roast duck thinking that they must do a tremendous job of it. I can say that this was the worst rendition of the iconic dish that I've ever experienced. The duck was dry and flavorless, definately microwaved, and served with the saddest array of mouldy unwashed vegetables and pancakes that were clearly not prepared fresh (brittle and dry). So grossed out, I will never return. Go get a better Beijing duck anywhere in Chinatown, J&J's, or Cozy Place. Avoid this filth. read more

The worst wonton soup with noodle I've ever had. I should have known it was going to be bad when they went for the deep freeze after taking my order. The noodles and wonton were gummy. The 'vegetables' (two 1/8 cuts of bok choy) were rotten. I hate to see local businesses empty, but this one is empty for a reason. read more

It does not get any better than this....Thanksgiving holiday in beautiful Victoria BC and we did not eat any turkey dinner. Instead we found this fun Chinese Bistro restaurant on Fort St. and enjoyed some of the freshest Chinese dishes I have ever tasted. Amazing blend of flavors....This is the first time I have never had to use Soy sauce or hot peppers to spice up my Chinese dishes. Our Chinese dishes were packed with their own unique flavors and all the dishes are prepared with perfection. Wish I could take this restaurant back to Bellingham, Wa. If you are visiting Victoria BC Canada this is a must stop in your culinary travels. read more

Not authentic Chinese food. This place is an absolute scam. This is the Chinese version of Kitchen Nightmares. If you don't believe me, try it yourself and re-live the nightmare. - Majority of the food prepped here is served from the cheapest prepackaged junk you find in a grocery store. - It's one of the few rare Chinese restaurants out there that uses a microwave for the majority of their dishes. - All of the "fresh" food prepared for us was old frostbitten meat. We complained to the owner and chef, and wanted to walk out, but he said he wanted us to try the dishes he already started cooking. We did, and it was an absolute disaster. Here are the highlights: - The white rice was stored in the fridge and re-heated in the microwave. - Months old frostbitten pork bao's reheated in a microwave - "Fresh" rock fish (which we were lied to) means according to the owner fresh as it in they got it frozen this morning (also a lie). Fish was at least a month or two old and disgusting. - Ordered a beijing (peking) duck, also was old flavorless leather-y frostbitten disgusting meat. - It took them an hour an half of our time to prepare the 6-7 dishes that we ordered, quarter way through we just wanted to leave but the owner insisted on keeping us here. Don't waste your time, this isn't Chinese food. This is some lazy guy trying to take advantage of people and make money. He has ZERO interest in food. read more

Incredible attention to detail to bring out the unique flavours of every traditional dish. 10/10 for us, visiting from Vancouver which has a large selection of Chinese food. Since we were aware of some of the reviews here about the microwave, we paid attention to the kitchen, and saw that our food was prepared in real time by the chef. Salt lovers unite. We optimistically ordered shrimp wontons, sautéed green beans, kung pao chicken, chicken fried rice, mapo tofu, noodles with bean sauce and a bowl of plain white rice which was extremely small for 5 people. The plain rice was the prime dish, it was plain rice as one would expect. This was a great surprise after trying all the other dishes. The shrimp wontons were perhaps the worse wontons I've ever eaten. It was one *small* shrimp, unseasoned, "wrapped" in a small wonton wrapper, then deep fried until extremely dried. These barely qualified as wontons. Starting with the okay, the green beans the were okay. They were a little dry and the pork had a strange texture, but it was passable. The chicken fried rice was very adequate. It was quite salty but not absurdly so, unlike all the other dishes, which will be covered in the following sentences. The Kung pao chicken follows up on the next least bad. The vegetables and such were almost candied in texture. Sticky with sugar. The noodles were just awful. There were plain noodles and a bean sauce to mix with. We expected a light, savory base flavor to balance out the rest of the meal. But instead it was somehow both sweet and salty in the worst way possible. It had no flavor other than being salty and sweet. It really had no redeeming qualities, except that, try as they might, they could not possibly mess up raw, chopped cucumbers. Which we ended up desperately eating to get any source of water into our bodies because they didn't give us water until we asked for it. At which point, it was luke warm tap water, in amazingly small glasses, when taken into consideration the salt quantity of the meal. In spite of all the superlatives we used to describe the other dishes, it all pales in comparison to the mapo tofu. Normally, this is one of my favorite dishes which only served to increase my bitter disappointment upon taking my first salty bite. The dish was so salty it did not immediately register as salt. The amount of salt is unlike anything I've ever tasted before, other than pure salt. I thought that they had seriously overdone the Szechuan pepper, because it made my tongue go numb. You couldn't even taste any flavor in it. The salt masked it all. Maybe this is Beijing style, but if that's the case then Beijing is a bad style. read more

However, it did take the waitress more than your average time to hand us the menus considering the store was almost empty. Food: (Beef Noodles) The first thing that came to me when I got the food was the quantity. The bowl of noodles was stacked to the top with an abundance of beef and vegetables. The portion was generous and looked appealing, but didn't have much flavor. There were ample pieces of chicken included in the dish. My husband had the shredded pork in garlic sauce. The pork was small twirled pieces of meat that tasted processed and appeared expelled from a grinder. The flavor was bland and unappealing. Friends from Northern China took us to Beijing Bistro. Wow! The food was exceptional! Started with a corn soup, followed by rice and Kung Pao. The deep fried peanuts in the dish added to the spiced vegetables and chicken. Tremendous! Best I have had. Sweet and sour shredded potatoes are a new favourite that can be added like rice to any dish. Definitely will order these again. Then the roasted duck served with paper-thin wraps (a little spring onion, a small slice of cucumber, some special soy sauce and then thinly sliced duck with crispy skin...wrap, eat and savour!) Amazing, amazing food. I had the Boiled Beef in Chili and the La Zi Ji. They were the best I've had of both of them, and wish I lived close so I could come back and order more!I saw lots of other food on tables that looked amazing as well, and I can safely say that this is one of the top 3 Chinese Restaurants I have eaten at. I picked them since I could see that their menu had some authentic Chinese food (unlike most Americanized Chinese restaurants), and they didn't disappoint. I would have given 5 stars, but I was pretty disappointed with the"Chinese-only" menu. La Zi Ji wasn't on the menu I was given, but due to my obsession with this dish I could pick it out on the whiteboard with a list of dishes written in Chinese characters. I don't speak or read Chinese, but I picked this one out, and ordered it. It's pretty disheartening though since I know there's a whole menu with a lot of items that I can't order since they are written in a language I can't understand. I'm not sure why they would withhold some of their menu choices from certain language groups. read more

Yum! I haven't had real Chinese food in a long time. I grew up in San Francisco area and it's hard to find any thing that compares. First the chief actually freshly chopped everything, you could hear him in the back chopping for a long time. Loved the pork with spicy garlic sauce. Soup was excellent too. After further discussion they finally agreed to give a togo cup. When I got home and looked it was a drop in a cup. So cheap and again no taste and way overpriced. And then, our Chinese neighbours heard about the high quality of this place, the chef was apparently trained in one of the top restaurants in Beijing. His skills are evident--all the dishes we had were excellent, and we all particularly enjoyed the Peking Duck. The squid dish was also wonderful. Food was on the salty side, though I was the only one that felt that way in my party. Although not busy, several tables were full with tons of food ordered at each table which all looked delicious.
