They said they could make it without added peppers), while my husband and I each got combos - his was spicy while I got marinated pork. Restaurant was not busy at 5, so we ordered right away and food came pretty quickly. My kid ended up loving my noodles so she ate loads of noodles, thankfully. My husband and I appreciated all the side dishes that could be incorporated in the meal in our combos. I ended up just putting everything together but I started adding stuff incrementally. Thought service was great, food was great, and speed was great. We loved having something different for dinner (traveling we ate fast food and then had random pastries and a high tea earlier). Would love to return next time we are in Victoria.

I think the right word to describe the food here is hearty? It just really hit the spot after a long day of walking around Victoria. The interior of the restaurant was quaint. The service was minimal. We tried their specialty beef rice noodles called "Beef Crossing The Bridge" - which was served deconstructed: bowl of broth, bowl of noodles, 11 toopings/ingredients (e.g. bean curd, broccoli, a quail egg, carrots, wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots), raw beef, and cooked beef. We also tried an order of pork belly and rice, won ton soup, and pan-fried dumplings. The beef rice noodle dish was bland - broth was lacking flavor and depth but the noodles had a nice, smooth texture. The pork belly dish had tender pieces of pork belly but the dish itself lacked in flavor. The won ton and dumplings were decent but nothing special.

We arrived at about 3 and was promptly seated. We ordered the XLB, a beef noodle stew, and a pork noodle soup. The food was good. I liked their XLB as it was very soupy. The beef stew stew noodle soup was nice and beefy. It had plenty of beef and tendon. Service was good. We observed the boss lady. The boss lady was good. She knew all her regular customers and even knew what they regularly order. Ox King is a good restaurant. We liked it.

I was very surprised that at 6PM, we had to wait a few minutes for a table because they were very busy. Quality along Japanese cuisine lines however, faces stiff competition from the nearby Hiro Sushi Xpress, which is arguably higher in every regard. === 2. FOOD Chicken Teriyaki ($11.95): With your choice of white or brown rice, you get diced chicken with 0 to 2 scoops of teriyaki sauce and a variety of griddle-fried, chopped vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, and carrots. Adding $4.50 makes any meal a "bento", where you can choose two sides; I happened to choose a 4-piece California Roll and 2-pieces of shrimp tempura. The food is fine, but the nearby Hiro Sushi Xpress just a couple of shops down from the food court seems to have higher quality food in all regards: better chicken, better veg, better California rolls, etc. === 3. SERVICE The service seems fine; the food is served relatively quick. However, who you get serving you seems to be one of two cooks at the griddle and there's no number for your order, just callouts of food. Choosing a popular dish like teriyaki chicken is something that prompts multiple people to step forward, which can cause confusion. Water is available self-serve with plastic cups at the end of the kiosk. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Bring one, bring all to the Hillside Centre food court: big, bright, and open, it's good room for everyone and their wheelchairs and baby strollers, if you have them. Parking is also easy to get in the spacious mall lot outside.
