This place unfortunately missed the mark for me. I got the spicy peanut noodle and the sauce was extremely heavy, so I wasn't able to finish the noodles because of it. I understand it's fusion cuisine but I didn't feel like the flavor was true to any particular taste. Additionally, the noodle texture felt a bit dry. I think it's a decent spot if you're looking for a quick meal, but with its proximity to so many authentic Asian spots in Chinatown, it's hard to justify coming here. read more

I got food poisoning twice from this location, one with chicken one with prawns . The first time I overlooked it, ​ the second time is just too far. We tried the kung pao box and the teriyaki box, both chicken and the chow mein noodles. The place was busy with takeaway orders. Our food was ready in about 15 minutes. The boxes had good flavor overall, and the balance of veggies to noodles was just right. I just with there was a few more pieces of meat. We ordered the kung pao box at medium hot heat, and it was certainly warm. We ordered the teriyaki box at mild, and it matched then heat description. Restaurant was generally clean, and counter staff was courteous. The only complaint was that the rubbish bin was flowing, leaving us no place to discard our used tableware and boxes. We ordered the Thai Noodle Box Medium Spicy with Chicken. The other reviews stated that there was no meat or little meat. That was not our experience or the experience of the diners at this location. As for the music is was evenly paced and at the right level. My wife has a peanut allergen and Cat was very thoughtful and understanding. She made the appropriate notes and then asked if we wanted to share our bowl. We said sure, and she said, " Great, I'll have the kitchen split the portions. " We helped ourselves to some waters and while we were waiting, the fragrances and flavors were galloping out of the kitchen and into the dinning area. You could smell the sweetness of the basil, and piercing onions as well as the powerful chilies. Cat, called my name and I picked up the bowls and delivered them to our table. One customer was outside, and Cat scooped out his togo orders and brought it out to him and give him a big smile and a friendly wave. It was all genuine and flawless. Our bowls were beautiful and for me, the test is how well does all the ingredients mesh together. The fatal flaw with a dish like this and others is that one ingredient overpowers the others and you don't have a party in your mouth but one loudmouth flavor that you wished went away as quickly as he came. Very interesting mix of experiences to report for Noodlebox. First of all, we were starving and this place was nearby the hot part of town. There was this annual celebration going on, which was a beautiful combinations of the symphony and fireworks, etc. So many part of the issues we faced were because of that... The place is set up like a quick service restaurant, like a Noodles & Company, back in the States. You order at the counter and then they bring the food to you. They guy gave us fair warning, but the wait was very very long. Imagine waiting 40 minutes for a quick service place. I don't know if they don't quite have their logistics figured out or what it was, but I don't see why there was such a long wait. I mean, the restaurant itself wasn't necessarily packed or anything. IDK, maybe they were serving a number of carry out orders. Just not sure why that was happening. The reason I still bump these guys up so high is that the food was actually pretty good. I love the rich flavor in my curried noodles. Definitely better than your average quick-service place. The flavor of the food was better than I expected. Anyway, after all the waiting, we were all starving and devoured all the food. I think the prices are also kind of high, but I think we were getting used to the CAD dollars vs. USD conversions. I know it costs less in USD, but the price in dollars still throws me off. Given then wait and the slowness, I think they prices are too high. WARNING! I will warn you because they won't do it. Noodlebox lets you choose your own degree of heat, or spice, but what they omit from telling you is that the spice level is through the roof ridiculous. I am very tolerant when it comes to spicy foods. I've also eaten my fair share of spicy meals in restaurants. I'm not one of these people who whine at McDonald's because they didn't know that their Junior Chicken would be that "spicy". So when I decided to go to Noodlebox (something which I was looking forward to a LOT), I naturally went for the spiciest option. It was called "scorching hot". I know it sounds ominous, but to me it sounded perfect. In most restaurants I've been to, the spiciest option is usually spicy enough to burn after a few bites. The more you eat, the spicier it becomes. If there's enough spice, your eyes might even start to water a bit, and your nose might start leaking. But it's all good. You don't regret your choice, at least not until the next day. I would also like to note that in other restaurants, waitresses and cashiers usually give you a head's up when a meal is considered "hot" and make sure that you're aware of what you're getting yourself into. That wasn't the case at Noodlebox. There was no warning anywhere that the "scorching hot" option would be that ridiculously hot. The sauce was lathered with hot peppers, and I couldn't smell anything but the spiciness. It was completely and utterly inedible. I would like to be able to review the actual taste of the food, but sadly the peppers masked any other taste. All in all, there was zero enjoyment whatsoever to the food. I had to stop after five or six tiny bites because I was choking, and my mouth hurt so much I thought I was eating a whole Carolina Reaper every time I took a bite. My cheeks stayed red for twenty minutes after I left the restaurant, and even now, six hours after "eating" there my stomach still burns. I don't understand why they sell this without putting a warning on the menu. The second hottest option says something along the lines of "It might hurt". The "scorching hot" option says something like "Guaranteed to burn". Are you serious? That's the closest thing to a warning you can give your customers? Not even the cashier said anything. I wasted $12-$13 on this "meal", only to take a few bites and throw the rest away because I was physically unable to keep eating. So in the end, it turned out to be both a waste of food and money, two things which I despise. When asked if it was possible to get a refund or a partial refund, I was declined. The cashier said that I chose my own heat level, which is fine, but I still feel cheated. I feel cheated because I don't think that it's fair to offer such an option in a restaurant without a warning. This degree of heat would be suitable for challenges on platforms like YouTube, not everyday consumption. I'm just frustrated. I chose Noodlebox today in the hopes of enjoying a delicious meal with my sister after not seeing her for nearly two years, but instead left in pain, hungry and feeling unsatisfied with the food and customer service. My sister was nearly done with her meal by the time I received mine, and she ordered one or two minutes before me. What's more, the employee was cold and offered no sympathy, and for no reason asked if I had eaten a meal at Noodlebox with this level of heat before. My third time in Victoria and I never went out to eat! We were walking around the chilly streets on a Sunday night looking for something good to eat and stumbled upon Noodlebox. Asian fusion? NOODLES? Sold. BLACK BEAN AND GARLIC - My first impression on reading this bowl was the korean black bean noodles zazangmyeon. The noodles in this bowl was a juicy thick chow mein noodle with the TASTE of the black bean zazangmyeon but definitely not the looks of it. It had a sweet but garlicky umph to it, and I definitely enjoyed this one. PANANG CURRY - Red panang curry...and noodles?!? Never even HEARD of this combo before. The staff was very according for me and told me I could substitute the meat for more veggies, which I opted for! (Rather than choosing tofu as the protein). It came out smelling like absolute bliss. AND it was straight STEAMING both temperature and spicy-wise. I only got the medium/mild and it was at the spice level where it's bearable but your lips would start burning after a while. These noodles were moreso the flat gummy-ish rice noodles that you typically see in pad thai dishes. SO. GOOD. I read a previous review where they said it was too salty but i didnt think so! I only ate half and finished the other half for breakfast the following morning with a side of rice! Mmmm donut judge me. KUNG PAO - everytime i see the combo of the words kung pao I IMMEDIATELY think spicy chinese chicken with sweet chili peanut sauce. My brother got this one and scarfed it down without even letting me swipe a couple bites of the noodles! The flavor in this is definitely there, medium/ mild spicy level is perfect. The noodles are the same as the black bean noodle dish. A thumbs up for me! SINGAPORE - these noodles reminded me of fettichine type of noodles. It came out in a green curry sauce and although I feel that I cant really be the judge of this since ive never had singaporean curry before, it was still very good! Quite different though from other curries ive tasted. (Honestly in my opinion, the panang curry I got was much better) AND there you have it! Victoria definitely impressed me with this one! Spent the weekend in Victoria in early May for a social media conference. Though this is my old university stomping ground, i'm amazed how much has changed in the seven years since I called it home. But I was happy to see Noodle Box alive and well. With a quick turn around dinner needed, we ended up at this spot twice over the course of the conference. And one four star experience, followed by one two star experience, lands us in the 3 star review range. Four star: After a 6am start time the first day, by 6pm we were simply craving a quick meal, a glass of wine and a 45 minute stop over before we crawled back to baths & bed. In the mood for something asian fusion, we first hauled our tired butts up to Foo but as they didn't seem to have wine available (or it was not visually promoted) and not wanting to balance on bar stools, we made our way to Noodle Box. The spicy peanut box has been my go-to since second year university. It's tasty. Frickin tasty. And we gleefully ordered two, with two glasses of wine, plunked on the cushy booth seats and chomped down dinner. For under $25. Wham bam thank you ma'am. Only complaint - my "extra veggies" were pretty non-existent. But the meal came quickly, hot and with HUGE portions for us wanting females dreaming of hotel beds. Noodle Box delivered. Hurrah. Two star: Next day. 20 minutes before we parted ways and portable lunch. Noodle Box was outside the door so we popped back in. Never stray from the spicy peanut. It was busy. We ordered the specials - Coconut Curry Noodles for me and... whatever the other special was. They were obviously a little flustered with the large influx of lunchers from the conference but I golf clap them for pumping food out that quickly. However, it might have been a little too quick... My veggies, though more substantial, were raw. Not cooked. Which didn't fit with the meal whatsoever. And my partner in dine, who ordered AND paid for brown rice instead of noodles, got a box of noodles. Which we realized too late in the game to correct. We stopped in on a whim and loved it! I got the thai style chow mein (hot), and definitely recommend it. The food is fresh, colorful, and delicious-- a little pricier than your average takeout but worth it, especially for the farm-to-table practices. One word of advice: the scorching hot really is just that, don't worry about not getting spicy enough food here. Overall, a great place with exceptionally friendly staff and excellent food. This is a fast food-ish style asian fusion place. You order at the counter, then dishes brought to your table when ready. Most of the dishes are about the same, despite seeming variety on menu: Noodle type (chow mein, rice noodles), pre-made sauce flavor (eg, Kung pao, pad Thai, etc), topped with stir fried vegetables (mix of cabbage, scallions, broccoli, red pepper, and bean sprouts). You can add choice of protein for additional charge (chicken, beef, tofu, pork). Sauces are asian inspired, not really authentic. $10 box of noodles is big bowl (good portion) and comes out hot. Sauce is tasty but pre-made (fortunately not overly salty). Additional charge for protein is not worth it. I didn't get $3 worth of chicken with each of my boxes. This place is fairly inconsistent. I have been here a handful of times over the last few years whenever I am in Victoria. The first time it was fantastic. Depending on what you order it can either be fantastic, or horrible. My most recent experience I went with the spicy peanut noodles with chicken. It was disgusting. I seriously couldn't even eat it. My boyfriend got the same dish but with pork, and thought it was pretty good. Just changing the meat seems to have made a huge difference. The teriyaki noodles with chicken though were good. I love the concept of Noodle box, but am sad about the high prices and the inconsistency between dishes and locations. I highly doubt I will come back on future trips to Victoria. read more

This place used to be a little street food cart in China Town, selling generous and tasty noodles in a box cooked by the owner himself. Then he opened his first restaurant on Fisgard and then this one on lower Douglas hiring a bunch of kids to cook his dishes. Last night was the very last time I will eat at Noodle Box. I ordered a Spicy Peanut sauce dish with Tofu and Rice and what I got was a box of bland coconut water mush that didn't taste anything like peanut sauce. shame. Stopped in here today for lunch. I'm visiting with my husband, who is a native and wanted to go here. By "stopped in" I mean we were looking for a quick lunch solution and only had enough coin for 27 minutes on the meter. Quick in, quick out. We'd been once before and it didn't leave a good impression. Couldn't remember why. Now I do. The place has this cool hipster vibe which I and I'm sure the downtown lunch crew can dig. We put in our order for a spicey peanut noodle box and a tom yum soup. These are our go-to dishes from our usual greasy-chopstick or any asian-joint. At $30 for the two, my expectations were high. After 15 minutes of waiting I got nervous and sent my husband out to the car to pump the meter. He came back surprised that our food wasn't there yet. In another 10 minutes it came. That's right- a 25 minute wait for a box of noodles. So now I'm thinking "these have to be great." At first bite my husband and I gave eachother that "we've been had" look. The noodles were drenched in a sauce that can only be described as watered down creamy peanut butter. The soup just didn't taste good. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. Like they forgot a spice or to add "yumminess." The food looks great- tasted mah. We were super disappointed and I insisted my husband take me for a Tim Horton's donut to make up for it. I can't help it. Whenever I'm in town, I'm drawn to Noodle Box like a moth to a paper lantern. There is this incredible flavor and spice that I haven't been able to replicate at home. Ever. I don't care if it isn't proper asian fusion! It's delicious. At least it was. I'm knocking off one star because they changed some ingredient in the oils.. and that ticks me off. They had it perfect, and the noodles are still very good but not great., and that's what I had bargained for when I brought friends into the lively, bright, trip-hop playin', modern joint that is a bright beacon in a sea of old people restaurants in downtown Victoria. What I love about the Noodle Box is the variety: Pick your dish, now choose your protein (chicken, pork, beef, prawns... all perhaps? I go w/ tofu because it just fits with their dishes), then switch between noodles or rice, and finally add-on some extras or up-grade the existing ones. So wonderful and simple! What I don't enjoy about the Noodle Box are the line-ups, moderate customer service, paying a large percentage of the cost of the meal if you choose additional items or substitutes, and the long wait times. A disappointing first visit . . . . I'd recommend Foo up the street instead. I felt like I was one of the last in Victoria to eat here. I watched colleagues time after time bring a Noodle Box back to work for lunch. A lot of fans and repeat eats. So here I am finally ordering a Teriyaki Box at 11:50am Friday to beat the crowd. I asked for no garlic because, even though teriyaki shouldn't have it, some of those same colleagues reeked of it après Noodle Box. It made me think that maybe they use it on everything. I paid an extra $1 to substitute noodles for rice. After a 20 minute wait I had to decline the dish, as it was served on noodles. Over five minutes later, it comes up as ordered. My lunch mates were almost done, of course. Well, my sprouts were fresh. The dish was half rice. The chicken was bland, stir fried, not at all beautifully glazed with a sweet/savoury soy-ginger sauce. What made it more awful was this weird finish on my tongue - a dry, cardboardy, yet tingly effect that was off putting. I couldn't place it . . . was it sulphites or a weird additive? Barry, you're the most amazing person ever. (he was the one that pushed me into The Noodle Box.) The moment I walked into the restaurant, I fell in love with it. The choice of music set the mood of the restaurant perfectly. It's a bit loud and makes talking difficult, but it suits the restaurant perfectly. I was recommended to try the Spicy Peanut bowl. I did. The spiciness guide is very amusing and does a decent job explaining the different levels of spiciness. I got exactly what I expected when I ordered in a reasonable amount of time.
