Enjoyable lunch with my Dad today. Though they were busy, we were seated and attended to quickly. We both had the 2pc haddock & chips which we enjoyed. The batter is light and crunchy - one of the best I've had in some time. They forgot the coleslaw on my plate but Dad liked his. Service was good. So many things wrong. We will start with service 3 tables and 4 servers who were too busy socializing and messing with the music so that it was like a 5 year old changing songs and headache worthy. Got served Vegan chicken strips even thought we specifically said not Vegan Fish Tacos were beyond disappointing and presentation left a lot to be desired. 2 piece Halibut was okay, fries were all bit not really fries and the tartar is super sweet now. Soft, buttery - more or less what you're looking for in fish and chips. But they come in these perfectly shaped rectangular blocks that look like they've been pulled out of a box. Not what I was expecting at all. None of those glorious big blocks of fish-shaped fillets with ample batter all around. Kind of disappointing. Chips - 3/5 Servicable, nothing special. You can tell they made it from real potatoes, but that's about it. Chowder - 4.5/5 Delicious! They give you a really small cup (my only gripe), but the chowder has lots of ingredients, is flavorful, and really quite tasty. Popcorn Shrimp - 4.5/5 Great popcorn shrimp. Big pieces of shrimp, well-fried but not overdone, lots of shrimp in the bag. Tastes great with the marinara sauce. Overall - pretty good! Halibut burger had fresh fish and a variety of veggie condiments (lettuce, dill, etc.) that helps maintain a light, healthy taste. -Stay far away from the clam chowder. The bowl I opted for in lieu of the regular fries had a thick Elmer's rubber cement consistency that would probably best described as thick glop with chewy, tasteless clam pieces. I don't understand how Fish on 5th received an award for this slime. So.... everything seems to be a good choice EXCEPT for the chowder. Service was lacking as well. The place, primarily manned by college students, was half empty but yet it took about 25 minutes to get our food. We each ordered fish and chips with gf deep fried pickles to start. First off, they have bags of potatoes in the corners so you know the chips are gonna be good, and they are. The fish was perfectly cooked, not too much batter and no grease. Even the coleslaw was good and most places have that lame coleslaw. They have a nice gf beer to go along with your dinner as well. Today we had lunch at Fish on 5th, feels like a little authentic beach shack style fish resto. It's great to see they have GF batter and a dedicated GF fryer for family members who need that option. The fish (cod) was really good, lightly battered and not greasy. Homemade onion rings also very good. The only item we didn't enjoy was the Clam chowder which was super thick and seemed had been thickened with a lot of flour or cornstarch rather than by cream/potatoes and seafood. So disappointed with our meals last weekend! We ordered fish, fries and clam chowder and not one person out of 5 of us were impressed. I have been here before and it was great but this day it was so bad! Doesn't make us want to go back. We all ordered Halibut and we all agreed it was very fishy and didn't have that distinct taste of Halibut. We didn't even think it was Halibut. The fries seemed not cooked enough. Out options of the sides are: fries and slaws X 2, Yam fries, and garden salad. On each table, they have vinegar for the fish. It was delicious. Yep that's Fish on Fifth and it's becoming quite renowned for its side-by-side menus, offering both plant-based food and fresh-off-the-boat seafood. Decided to give this place a whirl after cycling out from Westshore and hearing so much buzz on social media. I've been transfixed by the vegan metamorphosis taking place here, a humble family-owned restaurant that's been a prominent fixture in downtown Sidney for over 20 years... It was lunch rush and the place was busy with eat-in and takeout. I was promptly seated by a friendly server and given two menus, one of them the "secret" vegan menu. She told me they will happily convert any dish into vegan. Mmm omnivore options. So they are making two kinds of the same dish: one traditional, one plant based...? That's a big feat. This I gotta try. I ordered the No-Codfather Burger. It arrived looking impressive with two beautifully golden "fillets" on a soft squishy bun topped with homemade tartar sauce, fresh lettuce, tomato and pickle, alongside a rainbow of a side salad. At first glance you wouldn't know it wasn't fish. One bite and yummo! The burger is absolutely delicious. Like a filet o fish burger should taste. Kudos to the chef for replicating the cod texture and perfectly crisp beer batter. It's a good size too - I was hungry and barely finished my meal. Price was reasonable too (about $13). I was told one of the owners is a vegan chef and constantly experimenting in-house with plant based ingredients, hence the always evolving menu and creative specials (see Facebook and Instagram for updates!). Her omnivore menu is becoming more well-known as word spreads, but "the boss" is already an icon in the vegan community. She has added the famously popular Beyond Meat to her burger menu. And her newest addition? Soft serve ice cream. Pineapple Dole Whip. Ah... Aloha!!! Served in a waffle cone. Summer is here. There's more to be had than fish at Fish on Fifth! I was at Fish On Fifth Sunday night. The salmon was delicious. My friend had the Halibut and said it was the best she had had. I like that you can play Trivia while waiting for your meal. I love that the menu gives you three steps for ordering - choice of main dish Deep fried, grilled or Gluten Free. Then choose what your side is, or another option of having 1/2 and 1/2 for a small additional cost I believe. They are open until 8 pm, and we went about 7:45, and they made us feel welcome and not rushed at all. Justin, who reviewed earlier, saying he would never go back because they used panko and he didn't like it. I asked if they used it, and they told me no. They have never used it. They make their own batter from scratch. Very nice. A thinner batter that is crispy. Sort of like Tempura in a way. Over the years since they opened I have been several times, and never have I been disappointed.
