The halibut batter, the best in town, not oily. In season, the halibut is fresh. Of course it taste better when fresh. In the winter, you can't get fresh halibut anywhere, it doesn't make sense from the complainers. read more

This is a small owner operated restaurant occupying a space in a well established strip mall in a residential neighborhood. One side is the kitchen and the other side is the dining area. We came for the Fish n Chips. The Halibut and Cod pieces were roughly 2" X 4" X 1/2" thick and were lightly breaded and fried in a clean oil. They were delicious. The fries were freshly cut and cooked per order. Both items were outstanding. The owner welcomed us and served us. She also made certain several times that we were happy with our meals. There is no real ambiance here but we came for the food and got everything and more than we expected. Great place to eat FnC. read more

The couple running the restaurant were super sweet and the service was great. The water was delicious. I ordered a one piece cod dinner and two oysters. The oysters were so disgusting I couldn't eat them. I ate a bit of one to be polite to the people I was dining with who raved about the place. I hope I don't get deathly ill as a result. The fish was equally disgusting. It seemed like rancid old old old grease perhaps? The fries didn't seem as disgusting and only a subtle bad grease aftertaste. Hidden Gem- with GREAT classic style Fish and Chips! I think the other poor reviews were there on an "off" night. I went with a friend who has been going here for many years and claims it is the best, and I was not disappointed. The staff/owners were very friendly, the restaurant was clean and the food was all made fresh to order. Pay the extra $3 for the halibut- the fish was fresh with a great crust, and cooked perfectly! It's not in a strip mall, but in a small building in a residential area, just a few minutes drive from downtown. Get out of downtown and check it out. read more

I was a bit leery so had a glass of wine just in case the food did not meet my expectations. Box wine, perfectly serviceable at a reasonable price. This restaurant truly represents the community atmosphere I was looking for. It was so well suited as a local joint in the Fernwood area. This homey and friendly restaurant reminds one of those carefree days as a kid enjoying a simple and comforting food. We ordered the halibut meal and the popcorn scallops. Both were very good! Delicious fresh flavour that represents the west coast. However, although this was a very good place, it was not the absolute best I've had in town. We just picked up our order at the take-out window (one cod, one halibut, one chips) but were taken aback when told that the cost would be $27. There was nothing wrong with the food itself and the fries were ample, but the cost took us by surprise. I understand that some restaurants are charging more to compensate for loss of sales during the COVID crisis, but it seems to us that, in this case, they have lost us as future customers. However if you want some classic fish and chips, then this is a quaint little diner that will do the trick for you. I had the calimari and two piece halibut meal. The calimari was fried with a medium batter and presented with quite a delectable home made tzatziki. The halibut had a deliciously thick and gooey batter that held the fish together perfectly and coupled with some lemon juice and a bit of pepper, it was an experience to remember. 8/10, 16/20, 192/240. read more

We used to live 3 blocks away in the 70s. We now live in Los Angeles. I also lived in England. I've eaten F&C from London to Inverness Scotland, Victoria to Hong Kong. There is no better place on the planet. It's a wasted trip to Victoria if Haultain is closed. We never fail to eat there. We send our friends there. No one has ever failed to say "The BEST Fish and Chips EVER!!" As far as the price, you can pay less, but you can't buy better. Worth every loonie!!! read more

Tops in Victoria - best ever for me. Cannot take stuff this good more often than once in a while. Try the oysters! The fish is, of course, fresh. I once had to-die-for at Harvey's or A & W in Halifax - no frozen stuff there either. Obiously, these people take their fish very seriously. Side orders? Who cares - order more fish - you might get run over by a bus and never experience this place again. Yes, it's that good. The fish is of frozen quality that any grocery store sells in their frozen isle and the chips were overdone (harder than raw potato). OK, this place was listed in our AAA guidebook (which has been very helpful in many other ways on our trip) but this one was a FAIL. 2 plates of fish and chips, a diet coke and a local bottled beer almost cost $60 including tip. This meal was more expensive than other meals we have had on this trip and was certainly not worth it. The people are super nice and friendly, but come on, the food quality has got to justify the price. The fish and chips here are very disappointing.. they gave us an over load of soggy fries, no tartar sauce or coleslaw. The small portions of fish, fries and milkshake was just ok compared to other places but this place also cost about $20 extra. If you decided to still go ahead and order be sure to actually ask for tartar sauce and then pay extra if you get their homemade stuff. If you prefer the free kraft package (because you already over paid by $20) be prepared to be very turned off.. we drove back again to pick some up and it was so gross should of just ate the fish with nothing. read more

It's the best fish and chips ever. The coleslaw is amazing! In fact we have tried to master the secret recipe at home. My only complaint is it's pricey for the amount of food you get. They can't control the price of the halibut but maybe could put more fries and coleslaw with them to make the portions bigger. The prices are way too high :( read more

Last time I went was very sorry, halibut was cold and over cooked at that, less than half the size pieces of fish since the ladies are not the owners anymore, way too expensive as well, especially when paying for halibut and getting cod, if it was Alaska Black Cod would be one thing, but it was not. If any place deserves a five star for fish and chis, this is the place. If stars were given out for friendly, neighborhood attitudes and attentive service alone, this would be a six. But even if all you car about is the food, and you want fresh, perfectly prepared cod or halibut, and the portions that you can only get your arms around.....treat yourself....we had the two piece cod and fries and cole slaw,one soft drink, two wonderful deserts to go.....$45..... Ten bucks to the serve-staff plus a promise to put one of them up in California if they bring 50 pounds of that cod......out for $55 with a truckload of memories of the best fish and chips for years and years....thanks, folks. read more

I have to admit that I haven't been here in ages, but I used to come here fairly frequently with my dad when I was younger. The servers were always friendly and the food was usually pretty good, however there was one lady ( a cook) who always made me feel really uncomfortable. Because of health reasons, I would often just order salad but every time this happened, the cook would come out of the kitchen and abruptly say something like "What are you on a diet or something?". She came around and talked to us, asked where we were from, not only gave us suggestions for the rest of our stay, she drew us detailed maps and gave us so much of her time! I agree with a few of the other comments, food was very good,batter on fish crispy and not greasy, service quick but my goodness its expensive for the size of the portion. I had 1 piece Halibut and chips and a soft drink and it came to $19 and some change. I was barely spoken to and hard to make eye contact with the waitress. My recommendation is either to increase portion size or lower your prices because as is I would not return or recommend to anyone. read more

Yummy fresh off the boat fish and fries made from Kennebecs delivered yesterday. The battered and fried halibut was as good as we've ever had and it was fried then delivered to the table. No heat lamps, waiting for servers to pick up or pulling out of freezer. All of the food was fresh and terrific. We ordered a double portion of fish and chips and were offered "half and half" - half coleslaw, half fries. The cole slaw is shredded cabbage with a light dressing that is obviously made right there. Restrained but very tasty. The fries were hot enough to burn the mouth as was the fish. Our waitress brought extra fries so my husband could have some so it turned out to be a full order of fries and a sizeable portion of cole slaw. The women staff got our food out to us then all sat down at another booth to enjoy their own lunch during the slow period of mid afternoon at the restaurant. This place is the real deal and well worth the short drive from downtown. These ladies know their fish! read more

The cafe is in a residental neighboorhood and the wonderful friendly and the server too! The portions are good sized, especially for the price. We added to our oder and the owner said we must have more cole slaw (which is good too!) and didn't charge us! We left a good tip for the friendlyness and great halibat and cole slaw. read more
