Halibut Fish & Chips (2 piece split order)
    Bill R.

I'm not as much a fish person as my wife, so these are mostly her thoughts. We walked from our hotel to Fisherman's Wharf in Victoria. Wanted to try some fish and chips. Barb's was one of the highest rated. We chose the halibut over the cod because it was fresher. The cod, however, is the most popular. It was very good. Not a ton of breading, but enough and lots of fish. We wanted a light lunch so we split a two piece meal and they offered to split it for us. Plenty of food. The fish also was not greasy, as some fish and chips can be. The cole slaw was cole slaw. The brewed ice tea was weak. But overall a solid four stars.

Delicious fish and chips at the wharf! My husband and I each ordered the cod fish and chips (2 piece meal) and shared a fountain drink. The cod pieces are huge, we were pleasantly surprised. It comes with a side of slaw and tartar sauce. The fountain drink area had a lot of wasps hovering by, just be aware. The wharf has an open seating arrangement so we found a seat right by the water. The food was hot, and both the fish and fries were crispy. It was filling and perfect to start the afternoon strolling around Victoria.

This place is good. Not the best in the city as advertised. But good. My wife and I stopped by here Friday night after a long day of e-biking this beautiful city. Which is perfect for biking by the way. It is located on the wharf. They do not serve beer so I grabbed an IPA from the fish store next door. The service was ok. It is noisy with a band playing down on the wharf and not really helpful staff. We had the two piece fish and chips, shrimp basket, and seafood chowder. The fish was good, fries were great, and shrimp was basically something you can grab at Walmart. The seafood chowder is really good. The coleslaw had no flavor. Let me know if you agree or disagree.

Barb's was recommended by our tour bus driver Hummingbird and did not disappoint. Kind and courteous service at the counter. We ordered the cod and chips, kid's hot dog meal and a cup of chowder. Delicious! Clean, covered area to eat. Would definitely return!

Used to be chowder, burger, shrimp skewer, cheesecake and fries. Our family loved it!

The burger was so good and juicy. It gets messy but it's so good. One of the best burgers I've ever had. Now the clam chowder, so good. There is a lot going on in there and I'm loving it. Maybe the best chowder I ever had. It's up there, way up there. I don't know what they do to the fry's, how can a fry be so good? Service was fast. I can't believe this place only has a 3.6 at time of revue. Very friendly lots of shade and fast and nice service. I had to make a review and I never give 5 stars. Great job Barbs!

We made the trip to fisherman's wharf, in search of some delicious meals; the food hit the spot as the fish was crispy and the chowder was fantastic. The service was speedy, based on the amount of folks ordering, and friendly to boot. Nothing beats enjoying your meal on the beautiful docks.

I've been wanting to try this place ever since a local recommended it a year ago. I love the location and atmosphere and would love to come back when I'm not on a cruise ship timeline. We showed up right before closing and were probably the last order of the night. We ordered one serving of the halibut fish and chips, and it was HUGE! The halibut was incredibly fresh, but I wish the batter and fries had been crispier. This place definitely satisfied my craving, but my gut says there's even better out there.

2 pc fish and chips + basket of fried shrimp

Got the 1 piece fish and chips. Big piece of fish, well done. It was very crispy, not at all greasy. Nice light batter. Fish tasted fresh. Fries were also good and crispy. Cole slaw was also good. Nice experience, I can see why they've been around a long time.

4.5 stars. Excellent fried fish with cod. Very light batter that's almost tempura like. The fish could have a bit more salt to it.

Although there are many variations with different toppings these days, just like poke, my favorite way is still the classic Quebecoise poutine just loaded with squeaky curds and gravy. The large is enough for two to share, unless you plan on making it your entire meal which I wouldn't judge especially since you can't find ones with the squeaky curds back in the US.

This restaurant is essentially a small shack on the waterfront level with some outdoor picnic table seating. It's conveniently located next to a large pay lot, so there's plenty of parking. When we stopped by after driving off the ferry on a Friday evening, it was relatively quiet and we were able to place our order with only one party ahead. Since the fries are freshly fried, it took a couple of minutes to assemble. Classic Poutine, Large ($15 CAD) - As a classic poutine, this is a pretty simple dish. The fries are clearly fresh cut, with even a little potato heel in the mix. They are cleanly double fried, allowing the requisite tenderness on the interior combined with the crisp exterior, even holding up to the gravy poured over the top. The gravy is pretty standard. It seems to be from a powdered base, so it's mainly there to contribute sodium rather than any robust beefy or vegetal flavors. They add a ton of cheese curds on top, enough to cover the entire surface of the metal tray the poutine comes in. The curds are fresh, milky tasting, and fabulously squeaky. They are still distinct with some substance instead of being melted into a puddle from the hot gravy. (4/5) While I can't really compare L'Authentique to anything in Montreal (seeing that I've never visited), I thought it was pretty good. It's clearly good enough to satisfy my poutine craving at least! Washrooms - No public ones, but if it's not too busy, the staff allows customers to use the staff washroom.

You're not coming here for an authentic food experience (coming from Hawaii, I can certainly attest to that), but they do offer some of the dishes that speak to the spirit of Hawaiian fare and so "mahalo" to Kahuna for honouring the Hawaiian culture and ways in Victoria - thousands of miles away from its inspiration! === 2. FOOD The dishes may not necessarily cater to those from Hawaii (things have been adapted for the mainland - like all other ethnic foods brought to North America) but the creative dish names do provide some reminders of home. Of note, they have a few standard desserts including a lillikoi cheesecake and a haupia pie that they make in-house. Today, I tried the Loco Moco and it's perhaps a healthier (?) but very different interpretation of a typical loco moco one gets in Hawaii. Perhaps it's a local adaptation of the dish (for Hawaiians: note that there is a lot more vegetables on this, much less gravy and portion size, and different macaroni used and no brown/fried rice available) - but overall the dish is tasty. === 3. SERVICE Soft-spoken, well-mannered, it's like the Canadian version of Hawaiian service: caring but without any of the fun sarcasm and localisms one finds in a local Hawaiian joint. I noticed they were attentive to dine-in patrons and everyone wears a brighter-coloured shirt that speaks to the aloha shirts found in Hawaii. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Good, bright, modern, and clean, the Hawaiian motifs are visible throughout be it in colour palette, light fixtures, decorations, and even the t-shirts on sale. While it's not ginormous, you could bring a sizeable party of perhaps up to 12 here. Groups of 4 or less would be best served on a daily basis. One of the bestest burgers ever indeed. While we don't have In-N-Out Burger up here in Canada - this is probably the next best thing. The thin cut fries are excellent. Get an order of regular fries. OMG the Chocolate Shake here is absolutely sensational! It looks small & unassuming, but don't be fooled - it's the real deal when it comes to quality shakes! Be sure to tell the cashier you want your shake after you finish your burger. I do not recommend you get it to go - have it right away once you've finished your meal. Also if you are one to carry around your own metal or plastic straw, bring it here! This shake should not be associated with paper straws = sadness!
