I'm not sure if the flavor combination was my favorite, but I did like the contrast of creamy cheese to the umami/shrimp-y and spicy sambal sauce with a background of fluffy and crunchy paratha. The nasi lemak featured a delicious sambal with crispy anchovies. I was very close to ordering a side of sambal. Curry chicken was not available so they substituted it with a fried drumstick, which was very tasty itself. However, I felt a sauce or a "wet" component was missing because all the other ingredients were on the dry side. From my experience of eating many nasi lemaks, if you choose a fried chicken then your sambal has to be on the saucier side. The moonlight kway teow had all the right flavors with a generous serving of seafood and wide kway teow. I loved how the clams were smoked which added more umami. Noodles had enough wok hei 锅气, but I felt like it was overly sauce and almost like a 湿炒牛河 (beef chow fun with gravy) instead. The Kopi-M was very solid! I'm a huge milo fan so it wasn't hard for me to like this drink, especially with the kopi/coffee flavors as well. There's something about the space that feels both joyful and grounding at the same time. But what truly made the night unforgettable was the service. There were two women who took such beautiful care of us. I wish I could remember their names because they deserve to be recognized properly. One of them, our server, was so warm and kind--she honestly felt like an auntie, like family. She guided us through the menu with so much care and encouraged us to try something beyond what we initially planned (my girlfriend was ready to go straight for pad thai, as one does ). And I'm so glad we listened. The other woman, who seemed to be managing or working behind the bar, was equally incredible. The space itself is quite big, with an expansive dining room full of big tables for larger parties. As I mentioned, the decor had the whole clean/green vibe that retail and restaurants alike are leaning into these days, though interestingly on the perimeter there were some fun little antique items like very old wooden furniture or saloon-esque pianos. As a party of four we were sat at a round table in one of these perimeter spaces which gave us a nice vantage point. I had heard that the cocktails here were not to be missed and I can see why. They're creative, thoughtful, and organized on the menu such that you can get a sense of the flavor profile before ordering (relative sweetness/sourness/strength) before ordering. I started with the Truemartini (Truman Vodka, Gin, Osmanthus, Fontbonne, Rockeys, Dry Vermouth, Blue Cheese Olive) which I absolutely loved. I suppose it gives dirty martini because of the blue cheese olive but it's far more complex and herbaceous than your typical martini so it's honestly in its own category. I then got the Hanami Drop (Citadelle Gin, Ovo Vodka, Jasmine, Rockey's Umeshu, Lime) which was good but because I wasn't really in the mood for a gimlet it did not hit in the way I had hoped but that is ultimately my fault and not theirs. Food-wise, there is a lot to choose from, which makes deliberation quite difficult. At least from what we ordered, it seems that the apps are smallest, the veggie/rice sides are in the middle, and not surprisingly the entrees are quite a bit bigger (and filling). Eats, below: Wood Ear Mushroom Salad (Poached and mixed with chili and lemon sauce): A Far and away the best veggie we got. The texture was perfection and the preparation itself was relatively simple in a way that really let the mushrooms sing. Cucumber Salad (Tossed in scallion & ginger sauce, sesame oil): B+ Really nice flavors, just felt the texture was very very slightly bordering on slimy (I think it was because of the way the sauce interacted with the natural wateriness of the cucumber) which I hesitate to say because I don't it to fully turn anyone off but I can't think of a more fitting way to describe it. Kung Pao Chicken (Peanuts, chili pepper and peppercorn): A Savory and delicious, didn't have all that much of this because the prawns really drew me in but this is a no-brainer and a crowd pleasure. Tea Smoked Duck (Bone-in smoked duck, hoisin sauce): A- Solid execution, nothing too memorable but still very good and a decent portion. Fei - Hong Spicy Prawn (Tiger Prawn, crispy pepper, peanut): A As I mentioned, this dish had my heart. For mains, we ordered the veggie curry, the mushroom fried rice, the half duck and the pork dish. All were very good. The only critique that we have was that the duck took a while to get to us as it was accidentally delivered to the wrong table and we ended up taking most of it to go. I wish there was more of the tsukune but less of the scallion chicken. All items were good, but only thing that I'd really come back for is the corn ribs. The seasoning on those are fingerlickin' good! Even though we were pretty full, we couldn't help but also get the Ube Tiramisu ($14). I like the idea and flavor was there, but something felt missing.
