When I moved south of the river last year I set about looking for local restaurants to supplant my north ATX faves, the closer to home the better. After some initial disappointments with Asian fare a friend recommended First Wok and I'm glad he did. It's close by, the service has always been courteous and prompt and the menu has plenty of options to choose from albeit pretty standard Amer-Chinese choices. I really enjoy their 'Tangy Spicy Bean Curd' which is a kissing cousin to my favorite 'Mapo Tofu" dish. Their version uses larger pieces of pork, soft tofu and a tasty, slightly spicy sauce that makes it my first choice to order there. I only wish they offered it on their lunch menu, the 34 selections there are a great bargain since they give you almost as much entree along with choice of soup, rice and egg roll for about the price of a premium fast food meal. Their Lo Mein dishes are quite tasty as well, available with your choice of beef, pork, chicken or veggies and are available on the lunch special menu. However their chow mein, garlic sauce and Szechuan-style options are less than stellar in my opinion. I find them over-sauced and rather bland overall so it's been kind of a mixed bag for me there. I keep going back though, it's close and handy and take-out orders are ready pretty quickly. They do a lot of take-out business, it's a popular place with the locals. They also offer delivery with a $15 minimum purchase. So First Wok is my local go-to Chinese take-out especially since it's close to home with good food (and lots of it) at reasonable prices. read more

Waited for a call, finally went back a1.5 hours later- waited in line again only to be told it would be 30 more minutes. Let me start this off by saying I've had Chinese food in PA, VA, AZ, UT, and now TX, and I have to admit that this was definitely in my top 3 Chinese restaurants. We got wonton soup, orange chicken, chicken and broccoli, and fried rice and it was all delicious. By far the best wonton soup I've ever had. Once I offered to pay extra after a delivery and they argued they weren't going to give me my fix..Today I ordered two plates, they gave me one wrong, and they want me me to return..Not worth the trip. It's been a very long time since I've had good Chinese food. I think sesame chicken is a good staple dish to tell if a restaurant is good. I was debating on sesame or general tso's. I ended up choosing general tso's and I don't regret it. It's sweet like sesame chicken, but has some spice to it. This place is so good. I've tried a few places in the south Austin area, and have been frequenting Sichuan river, but this beats them hands down. This is only one dish, and I want to try more, but I have not had chicken this crunchy and tasty in many years. I just had left overs and it was as crunchy as it was when I got it earlier for lunch. Also, it's sooooo affordable. It's like 9 dollars for a lunch special with huge portions and their dinner specials seem to be around 13. I love First Wok! It is the true Americanized Chinese food... the stuff I grew up eating in the suburbs of Philadelphia / the Northeast in the late 90s and early 00s. The wonton soup is smooth and perfect. The lo mein is exactly what you remember. The moo shu chicken is amazing. My fiancé and I have been looking for a solid Chinese take-out spot, and we've definitely hit the jackpot. I called on a Friday around 6pm to order a chicken lo mein and egg rolls. They order was ready in 10 minutes, the single serving was enough for both of us and the total was as cheap as Austin gets. The neighborhood isn't the most upscale (there were multiple police officers in the parking lot when I arrived), and the interior is def a hole in the wall but again, takeout is the way to go. Found First Wok on Door Dash when scrounging around for some Chinese takeout. They have become our go to place for those nights when nothing else will do. Food overall is what you would expect. All the standard favorites. With one meat eater and one vegan in the family, everyone is happy with the choices. Food arrives quickly and hot. One time the sauce from one th dishes was in the bag and not the container but think more a driver issue than not. Only complaints.. crab puffs are missing filling as there is barely anything inside them.. also, styrofoam has got to go! This is a great neighborhood place for delicious, plentiful, quality Chinese food! I have been for takeout and dining in and both have been great. My favorite dish is the orange flavored beef, which features huge hunks of steak, battered lightly and fried, tossed in a delicious gooey sauce that is dripping in fresh orange peel. It comes with rice. The dumplings are delicious, and the soy sauce with scallions that it's served with is to die for. Meals in are served with wonton chips and a sauce, as a complimentary appetizer. The staff at the restaurant are speedy and polite, quick to offer a recommendation if asked and speedy at refilling my water cup. The prices are more than reasonable, especially since this is good quality, family food, not mystery-meat garbage. read more

When I first moved to Austin I moved into some apartments pretty close to this place and my roommate was a fan. We would often have food delivered. I have never actually eaten inside. Delivery is always pretty fast and reliable. I still live in the south Austin area and have branched out some, but to be honest none of the Chinese delivery places are as good as First Wok in my opinion. My go to items for delivery are the sweet and sour chicken, General Tso's chicken and beef and broccoli. I have tried a handful of other things too and they are all good. I feel like recently the General Tso's chicken as been amazing. It is rich and sweet, but I am loving it currently! The food is always packaged and tied up well which is appreciated too. The food here is the typical American Chinese/Asian food so come here or order from here expecting that and you should be pleased. read more

I can't tell you how excited I am to have found this place! For me, Chinese food restaurants all kind of blend together, and not only do the restaurants themselves blend together but every dish they serve seems to taste alike, too. My friend and I were wanting to try a new place, and the first thing that popped into her head was Chinese. When we got there, we thought their signage was a little cheesy, and we both admitted that we probably wouldn't have ever just stopped in there based on the outward appearance. Good thing for us....Yelpers before us had already done the leg work! We were kind of starving....so we got an order of the cream cheese puffs to start with. My friend loved that they bring out fried wontons and sweet-n-sour sauce to dip them in. The cream cheese puffs were sooooo tasty, perfectly crunchy, with no oil in sight. That's the sign of a good fried wonton....when there isn't any grease left behind on the plate! Next we ordered dinners which come with your choice of soup, an egg roll, and rice. My friend immediately declared the egg rolls the best she'd ever had. She also had the wonton soup which she said was probably the second best she's every tasted. I got the hot and sour soup which was just the way I like it. Lots of mushrooms, egg, and a strong flavor to the broth. I ordered the Triple Crown at the suggestion of our waiter because I wanted a meat dish that came with a ton of veggies. I can't even describe to you the sauce. It looked like your ordinary brown sauce, but had soooo much flavor. I could have asked for it to be a little spicier, but it's always a good idea to get a feel for how spicy places make things before saying you want it even spicier! The meat was good cuts (no fatty bites), and the vegetables were steamed just to the point of bringing out their brightest colors. I hate it when Chinese food is cooked so long that the veggies are unrecognizable. So...the food was delicious, but a big part of what made our meal so enjoyable was the server! He was hilarious, and kept bringing us little extras (like rice and fortune cookies) and calling us "beautiful girls". He was so funny. So.. I've ordered from First Wok a whole bunch of times. The food is typical of most American Chinese/Asian food. I feel like sometimes they use a bit less sugar in some stuff that most places. Generally I only have good things to say. Often I call in an order or my girlfriend will call in an order for me while she is at work. Now if she does that she uses her debit card. Several times I have had the delivery guy show up at the door and expect to actually see the card I purchased the food with. Now I get that they are worried about fraud, but honestly they have already been provided the cvv2 number over the phone. They don't make a carbon copy imprint of the card they just want to see it. This doesn't make any sense and doesn't help prevent any sort of credit card fraud and is an inconvenience for me. I hate to fault them for a billing process they do have some of the best food Asian delivery in the area but dealing with them is annoying. You can tell they get lots of business by the very very slow delivery times. I think you are better off ordering from one of the other local shops that do the same thing but are less busy and less bitchy about debit card phone orders. read more

Last night, we found Chinese food heaven within walking distance of our house. If you live anywhere in or within the Stassney/William Cannon and S. Congress/S. 1st square, make this your neighborhood Chinese eatery. Don't let the interior scare you. It's a dingy white and gray all over - a simple paint job and new floor would give this place a ton of warmth and personality. But when the food is so good that you can literally forget your surroundings...well, that's just special. Their prices are fairly standard - $5 for lunch specials, and dinner plates range anywhere from $6 to $9. They do free delivery within a limited area, but you must call in by 9:30. But let me get back to the food. Ahhhhh, yes. The hot and sour soup is made with real chicken stock, but otherwise meat free with plenty of tofu, mushrooms, and egg drop. Not too salty, not too sweet - the spiciness is just right! The egg rolls were fresh and flavorful (but not as much cabbage as I would have liked). You can request that most of their entrees be prepared naturally (they actually have a "Special Diet" section in the menu. I ordered the bean curd with vegetables, and they prepared it without sugar, salt, corn starch, and M.S.G. It was tasty and light! The vegetables (broccoli, baby corn, carrots, water chestnuts, and celery) were crisp and the bean curd (tofu) was silky. Oh my stars. Ok. Austin- I've given up on you & good Chinese food. I ordered the veggie lo mein, add tofu & a cup of hot & sour soup, & egg drop soup. I opened the lo mein box and automatically thought "LINGUINE?!" Check out my picture. Those noodles looked just like linguine pasta, and tasted like it too. The veggies present in the "veggie" lo mein were scarce and disappointing. Just some slivers of onions, carrots, & celery. They did add large chunks of soft white tofu though, which is what I wanted. I wondered if they added less veggies in because I also asked for tofu, but I hope not because I paid an up charge. The hot and sour soup was blah. I was hoping for heartier ingredients and higher quality ones. For example, they put white mushrooms in it! The egg drop soup was disgusting!
