Mostly, I was sold on the name (Rustbelt) of this coffeehouse in Downtown Toledo, just a few blocks from the small cluster of downtown mid-rises. Inside, it has the open floor plan with exposed ceilings up above, which works very well here and fits the industrial Rust Belt mood. The seating options were to my liking: big butcher block type tables meant to be shared, smaller tables, and upholstered seating with coffee tables. I wish I could have stayed at Rustbelt longer. It was a warm and humid summer day and I had an iced tea and a pastry. The items were tasty. The pricing was fair and the service was unremarkable, but did lean toward being good natured. Parking is available right in front along the street, should you want to keep an eye on your car. That said, I couldn't get a read on the location ... it seemed that there were other eateries and bars nearby, so maybe that meant it was okay. Also, I couldn't figure out where the customer base came from. Usually, bohemian coffeehouses have bohemian enclaves nearby where the bohemian people live. I didn't see any, or maybe I didn't look long enough. I couldn't imagine them being suburbanites. Lastly, I believe I've always seen Rust Belt spelled as two words. If they want to stylize this and go with one word, that's their prerogative. So, what you have here at Rustbelt Coffee are good tea/coffee with pastries to choose from, fair prices, decent service, and a spacious open interior plan where the climate control system was working very well. That sounds like 4 stars to me.

Now it's in West Toledo, on Sylvania Avenue, just east of Pa Jolly's and just west of the Chessie Circle Trail crossing. This is by far the best spot. THIS is EXACTLY where a place like this belongs. Atmosphere: Two-story building. Upstairs is gaming tables and the like. Downstairs is the café plus games, miniatures, and books for sale. Coffee: Damned good, and the menu is huge. Personally I like the Dark Lord and the Dragon's Breath. Both are mocha-style drinks flavored with hot peppers (ghost and cayenne). D'sR also serves breakfast, cookies, pastries, hotdogs and so on. I haven't eaten here yet. Staff: Friendly and accommodating. Hours: Longer than what's listed on Yelp or the website (in fact, the site doesn't look like it's been updated in about a year). During the week they actually open at 7 a.m. every day, including Monday, and close at 10 p.m. Weekend hours are a little different. So if you're a closet geek, like me, this place is for you. You can can go in, ostensibly for the coffee, but soak up the nerditude while you're there. But if you don't wanna blow your cover, make sure you do so after a heavy leg day at Super Fitness. 5 stars!!

It was enormous and plenty big for two people. They have excellent waffle fries. The service, impeccable. To be fair, you go up, you order, and it's pretty much self serve like most coffee houses. Now, where they could improve. I tried to order a breakfast sandwich at 11:05AM and was told they had moved on to the lunch menu. Having a very small menu, it would be helpful if you could order breakfast items all day long. I went in really wanting a bagel with hot honey and bacon, but it wasn't available. While the salmon Caesar wrap was good, I really wasn't looking for a full lunch. Luckily I was able to split something with a friend. It is a very small menu. I can't stress that enough. I do like that they have seasonal drinks, call me crazy because I know it was almost 90° today but once school is back in session, I want a fall option. They didn't have one yet. Lastly, the parking! A lot of the parking was cordoned off today. It was like that the last time I went too. Parking was tight. That wasn't such a big deal for me, but it would be for a client. I meet with a lot of seniors with mobility issues. They just isn't a lot of accessible parking. This is a great event space and they have awesome coffee. I just wish the menu was a little larger or at least allowed for a full day menu and I wish parking was a little more accessible.

The restaurant itself is great, keeping in line with newer styles of industrial meets country that seem to be cropping up these days. I want to like this place so much. The menu is very inspired and something this area really needs. I ordered a Belgium waffle with a side of bacon, and for the price the bacon was pretty sad. Two burnt pieces that together barely equaled one at Star Diner. More importantly (though cheap, crappy bacon is hard to forgive) I'm rating for the service. We sat for about 15 minutes before being served, and the waitress(s) looked at and walked by us several times without making eye contact. It sort of became a game after that, let's see if they actually serve us. I did notice that as soon as they served other tables they went right back to the kitchen, nobody circulated the room. When we did finally get served our waitress immediately told us that our food would arrive in 10 minutes and that if we needed something in the meantime to ask anyone, not just her. She just declined from there and she's very lucky that we left her a tip. Just to note, we are pretty easy patrons. We ordered right away since we had time to peruse the menu and we drank water and coffee which she plunked on the table. We didn't complain about the wait or treat her without respect. We made no demands or asked for anything extra, but were treated as if she was doing us the great favor of stopping at our table. I will have to think about coming back to this restaurant, and will probably only do so when part of a group. read more
