We hired this company for a large 1-day move scheduled 9/17/25. The process of quoting was timely and no issues. Friendly process and felt like all would go well. Pricing was fair and they were offering a discount if we booked, so we did. A few days prior to move, I called the mover to add items not on our inventory that we were originally going to move that we knew we wouldn't have time to. They ended up not being able to move most of it in time - so we did it anyway but got charged. We also moved our lamps which were on the inventory that they suggested we move ourselves or they would have to pack them. We were moving items with our enclosed trailer that we told mover we were going to do and what specifically we would be handling. No scope was affected. The week of the move, they requested to come day before to stage items to prep. They did not visit us any other time prior to move to check readiness or offer packing services. Two movers came and moved boxes that were ready into garage. Sounded like a plan, but the items moved now had no organization by room, stacked heavy on top of fragile, blocked garage doors, and blocked areas we needed to access to finish packing. We discovered this late in day. We then moved what they moved to repack damaged boxes and get our garage doors closed for the night. This stole much time needed to finish packing and prep for next day. Day of move, they showed up with 1 box truck and a small Uhaul. Did not seem adequate and it wasn't. They showed up earlier than scheduled while we are trying to finish up due to the delay they caused prior day. We asked them to wait until scheduled time. Owner was not happy about that because he was paying people that weren't working. So, we let them start in basement instead of upstairs. Only one mover spoke English, and the owner was there for a short time to get them started. This made it difficult to communicate with the team. We know we were not 100% ready, but what they did didn't help. They were not organized with no apparent process. We tried to make sure things we didn't want moved were noted and out of way, but they still packed and loaded items we were going to take, leave, or trash. If there were questions, they didn't ask. They did pack 5- 6 boxes in basement. They filled the 2 trucks, but they were unable to take everything they were hired to in 1 day. We had to use our trailer to move some inventory because they couldn't! After they finished loading, they asked where the new house was? We were dumbfounded by that question, because it should be known. They thought it was close, but it was an hour away. We assumed they'd arrive around an hour later at our new house. They didn't show up until late afternoon. Again, very difficult to communicate with the team speaking little English. I walked them through the house, explained where the rooms were by name, so they'd know where items were going. However, they couldn't read the boxes, and we had to direct every single box where it needed to go. Still things ended up in the wrong place. We ended up buying the mover team dinner as they had worked very hard throughout the day and went very late to ~10 p.m. They gave us the choice to do more that night or do in morning? We chose next morning. Thank goodness we had an extra day to move before closing. On day 2, there were no movers on site that truly spoke or understood English. They tried very hard and got the move done but it was inefficient. This left us very little time to prep the old house to be ready for buyer walk through at end of day. I informed movers I had to finish that first before meeting them at new house. They agreed and would go help with another job and then meet us at house later in afternoon. Day 2 finished late again. After moving, we discovered our $2K TV was damaged beyond repair (they packed); a piece of furniture was damaged and needed repair. We bought insurance with this company and put in a claim. They offered a small amount of money to replace TV and repair furniture. In exchange, we were required to sign a document agreeing we could not give them a bad review anywhere ever (required by their attorney; not industry). I declined to accept insurance due to this statement. Get hard copies of all documents and do your due diligence. My fault for not doing so - I trusted and assumed. In the end, the company charged more than quoted. Some of it warranted and some of it not. We gave owner the feedback above and more. He says he tried to address with us - not true. First call he denied it all and blamed us. In writing, he would not accept and changed nothing. We tried to come to terms with this company before writing any review. We did pay the full amount and did not accept the insurance as noted. The owner accepted no fault and no input! We've made large moves before with much better movers. Do your research. The good movers will quote higher but will deliver better service! read more

They did not follow instructions on using 2 trailers and separate my outdoor and basement items including trash from my new indoor items which is in our contract and I paid big money for, the crew took stuff from my trash for personal use, and kept it with all my Funiture, soiling it all, the also damaged items and offered me 60 cents per POUND after telling me my insurance was full face value minus a deductible, I paid for 4 hanging boxes for hanging items, the just shoved them in 2 boxes with no rod. then Jay the owner had the nerve to blame me. I am moving from Boston to the east coast. I was convinced to be picked up one day prior to our preferred pick up window. I was hoping earlier pick up could translate to that I will get my furniture earlier at my destination. I was wrong! My furnitures has been on their truck for over two weeks, and the estimated delivery is mid next week. I was told 10-14 days from pick up to drop off, when signing the contract. At pick up I was verbally shared that it usually takes 2 weeks. And I just got off a call with the moving manager, I was told it could take up to 3 weeks and yet it is not 3 weeks yet. This company was absolutely great. They answered on the weekend which I appreciated. They were also the quickest (and cheapest) to give me a quote. Other companies were quoting me double their price. They also wanted me to fill out my inventory online. The guy I spoke to just took it over the phone and also gave me great advice. In about 20 minutes the movers (3 guys) had completely moved all the boxes and suitcases out to the truck which had taken me several hours to pack. They also took great care with the furniture, covering everything with a cloth or shrink wrap. No marks on my walls and I was moving from a very tiny apartment with a lot of walls. This was my first time using a moving service, and it definitely won't be my last! Booking was very easy, Jason is very responsive and his emails and quotes are thorough and precise. The movers were very professional, arrived on time, masks stayed over their noses and mouths, and they were very polite and courteous. They needed to access my bulkhead to get my giant couch out of the basement, the bulkhead was covered in ice and snow, and they each grabbed shovels and cleared it! It took them about 30-40 minutes to load everything onto the truck and 30 minutes to unload. The entire process ended 2 hours earlier than planned. I will definitely use First Rate Moving in the future and would absolutely recommend their services. Moving is exhausting and stressful enough, let them take a load off your plate! read more

Horrible! Completely trashed several pieces of my furniture with nicks scratches and rubs on almost everything!! Put a 6 to 8 inch gouge out of my wall with rub marks from the dolly because they hired someone off the streets to help unload the truck. When they unloaded the furniture they literally hid the furniture that was completely ruined . I cannot and will not recommend this company! read more

Really late in giving this review, moved with First-Rate on May 11, 2020. All the 5 Star reviews that these guys are getting are highly accurate. Jay has a great business and great group of guys. The move scheduling (on line with available dates for moving) was very easy and Jay was very attentive to all emails and we had a move date nailed down in 2 days. This was my 1st time ever hiring a moving company to move my one bedroom apt. I hired them to move all the stuff that would have broke my back. Mattress, fold out bed/sofa, IKEA end tables and the like. The guys handled my furniture better then I would have! All items expertly wrapped for move, not one item was banged up moving from the old place (Haverhill) to the new place (Tewksbury). First-Rate had the best overall rates for moving and they were local to my moving location. The other movers for some reason all came from South of Boston and of course would have added in travel mileage to the final bill. So big pass on them. Ohhh and of course we moved during the COVID Pandemic and the guys followed all COVID precautions, Kudos! The entire move from Haverhill load up to Tewksbury unload and up the 3 flights to the new apartment took approximately 3 hours and we beat the rain storm. Bottom line: Stop looking at other company's reviews. 100% recommend using these guys for your move. I would be SHOCKED if you were disappointed (honestly). Great communication, very pleasant, clean and very reasonable cost (quote was substantially lower and all others). Returned all my calls/emails. Emailed me a simple contract. There were no hidden extras or other charges. Showed up on time, moved quickly and, to them, nothing was a problem (including a non-functioning elevator). Not a thing was damaged and my bed and furniture were reassembled exactly as they had been before. Trust me, I've had nightmare experiences with movers in the past (damage, surprise charges, discourteous, etc.). Not this time. Hopefully I won't be moving for a while but when I do I will definitely call Jay again. read more

Upon arrival (I was provided a range for arrival, they arrived 10 minutes before the first window and called upon arrival). I showed them what needed to be moved and they were off. I had a lot of items and boxes stuffed into a tiny apartment. They were very hard working immediately and did not stop until the job was done. I located them on Angie's List and verified their reviews and could not be happier with the service I received. I would call them again anytime I have to move. This was the second time I moved with First-Rate. Jay is extremely responsive, pleasant and makes it easy to set up a move. He manages to be both warm and professional at the same time. He and his fellow movers are friendly, efficient and hard working. For both moves they were right on time. When I told them a thunderstorm was heading our way, they wrapped our furniture in plastic and worked extra hard to make sure our move would be completed before it hit. They were upfront about any issues that came up during the move and took care of them immediately and professionally. My parents just had a disastrous move with a large company and I wish they had followed my advice and used Jay and his team. They would have been much more satisfied! read more

Where to begin.... This was the worst moving experience I have ever had. Please be aware that this is a very unprofessional and unequipped "company" On the day of our move, they did not show up as scheduled nor did they phone or text. Just silence. Our calls to the owner went unanswered. Hours later finally received a text stating "problem getting a truck". Really?? We continuously tried to reach the owner to find out what was happening but the phone went unanswered then straight to voicemail. We decided at this point we need to call a professional moving company which came over straight away and scheduled them for the following day (with hopes our new building would allow this) Then out of the blue a truck and workers show up... Only a text staying "outside" not even the decency of a phone call to let us know they were on the way. Since we actually had to move that day due to a scheduled time with our new building we decided to use them...BIG MISTAKE!! What should have been a 6 hour move turned into a nightmarish 10 and a half hours. As for the movers, I am not sure they would have gotten the job done at all without our direction, constant supervision and us moving furniture and boxes out of the apartment. This move cost us an entire day which caused other scheduled plans to be ruined. I am not in the moving business but I am much more capable to move than the movers that were sent and understand the potential for problems and the need for contingency plans nevertheless, contact with a customer. Jay and one of his employees helped my family with a move this past summer. We had a few heavier items (washer, dryer, hardwood furniture, tires and tools) to move from one storage unit to another. It was only a 15 mile move but the help from First-Rate Moving was what made it all possible. The team met us at our old storage unit, loaded their truck, followed us to the new storage unit and unloaded everything into it in the order we requested. In addition to the wonderful help we received another thing that stood out to me was how quickly Jay responded to emails, and the fact that he texted us when he was on the way to our storage unit. Terrible movers!! Jay used a rented U-haul truck that was not large enough to move my furniture in one trip. Came back the next day with a rented, open U-Haul trailer in the rain to finish the move. My expensive sleep number mattress was stained by the rain and has black grease marks that cannot be cleaned. My bedroom furniture was scratched and dented. A mahogany desk was dropped and top of desk separated from base so drawers won't open. Dining room set was also scratched and is a newer set. Furniture was never reassembled in new house as specified in contract and he refused to move Refridgerator because doors had to be removed. My tile floor in foyer was chipped by Jay and his 2 movers in a new house. Very upset and fiiing claim with First Rate Moving insurance company. read more

The mover can not keep the scheduled delivery date. The mover is really unprofessional. I have scheduled one months ago. They say that they get no feedback from me. That is a lie. I do what they ask me to do. They say nothing but just email me that I have to reschedule to another date, because their schedule on my date has been fully completed. If they want to move for others in my time spot, they should confirm with me at least, instead of just emailing me about their decision. They treat people who plan forward foolish. read more

I just don't know where to start.... words cannot describe the horrible experience I had. Jay went to see my storage unit and I asked for him to rent the largest moving truck because I had a lot of furniture. On moving day he showed with a medium size truck, I was dissapointed. He guaranteed that all my furniture would fit. Him and one inexperienced mover packed truck tightly and as a result a lot of my belongings were broken/damaged. My $4'000 hutch was chipped in most of the bottom.The legs on my sofas looked like if someone took sand paper and stripped the paint off of them. I had my box spring and mattress in plastic protector to see them ripped and soiled with dirt was horrendous. I had to pay $150.00 to have matresses cleaned. I need to have my furniture repaired too. Anytime I addressed something because I was concerned Jay snapped at me and argued. He's helper told my aunt who was with me that he had a bad temper. To make this story short... all of my belongings did not fit in the truck and quite a few were left in the storage. I had to hire other movers to finish moving. Jay tried to charge me for the truck rental after he said truck was included in moving fee. The guy is just a complete JERK. He went as far as to say that my furniture was damaged because I asked many questions and interrupted him. LASTLY he sent a text message the next morning trying to excuse himself and asking to come to an agreement to finish moving my belongings. Rating zero, First quote to move a piano was $250. Then the quote was $400 because he needed a fourth man. After the move he wanted and argued it was now $800!! I am outraged. It is extremely unprofessional. I gave him $400 and a deposit for $100. I have contacted Thumbtack and will likely use neither again. While the three young men sent to do my move were polite, Jay did a terrible job estimating the move. He said he's provide two trucks, which he did. They were not the same size, and at the end of the day, the movers left a number of pieces behind because the trucks were full. Furthermore, they scratched a number of pieces of furniture. A call to Jay proved to be pointless. STAY AWAY. POLITE DOESN'T CUT IT IF YOUR THINGS ARE DAMAGED AND THE WORK NOT COMPLETE! read more
