If I ever feel like having Cantonese food, I will come by this place. This restaurant has been known as the go-to-place among Dallas locals for those traditional Cantonese dishes. Those staple dishes include the Shrimp Wonton Soup, Roast Duck, Barbeque Pork, Pan Fried Noodles with the Seafood & Vegetables, Beef Flat Noodle, Young-Chow Fried Rice, Tofu with Shrimp on the Skillet, Orange Beef, and the traditional Cantonese Green Vegetables. This is the extent of the dishes I will order and my favorites that I think First Chinese BBQ does an excellent job on are the Beef Flat Noodle and their Young-Chow Fried Rice. Typical dishes, but so many restaurants around town just can't seem to get it right. These 2 are perfectly flavored and soooo tasty. The only annoying thing here is if you dine here, remember to bring cash because its cash only. Don't expect great service here, as you can tell in Chinese restaurants, its all about the hustle & bustle, making sure everyone gets their food and likes it. Mmmmm....the best Chinese food we've found in the metroplex. As an added bonus, it's inexpensive and portions are very large. CASH ONLY! Walnut shrimp with mayo sauce is awesome. Ok, 60+ reviews, the vast majority overwhelmingly positive. That can only mean one of two things: it's awesome, or voodoo magic is involved. So voodoo magic, then. This place was AWFUL. I really don't get how our experience could have been so different from everyone else, but it was. Maybe this joint is better for lunch? Or maybe 5 p.m. on a Friday night just isn't their time to shine. There was no wait, so we got seated instantly. After a few minutes browsing through Yelp reviews to see what others recommended, I realized this was a cash only place, so I had to jog across the street for an ATM, leaving my wife to tame her growling stomach. First Chinese bbq, what happened?? This used to be my go to place whenever I'm craving the typical greasy chinese dishes but this past visit was extremely disappointing. We got the roast duck, crispy noodles, cheese crusted prawn, water spinach with garlic, and the sweet and sour fish filet. The duck USED to be so amazing perfectly crisp and flavorful but this time.. the skin was soft and it was slightly bland.The crispy noodles were still as good as I remember. The sweet and sour fish filet was pretty good. They had good sizes of fish and the sauce was well balanced. The water spinach with garlic was bland as well and oh my, I had no idea this dish was $11!!! wth?? everything else we ordered were under $10 yet this cheap vegetable costed that much?? weird but whatever we didnt question it. now the biggest disappointment of all was the cheese crusted prawn. This used to be one of my absolute favorites because of how large the prawns were and how delicious the batter is. This time however, we merely got BABY SHRIMPS........75% of our plate was cheese only and no shrimp!!! Not to mention the cheesy batter wasn't that good anymore either. This review is based on several visits. What I've tried: roast duck, BBQ pork, beef flat noodles, flat noodles with black beans and beef, Yangzhou fried rice. Tasting Notes: The food here is great, esp if you like home roasted meats and BBQ. I'm not a fan of the duck, mostly because I wish it was kaoya ("peking duck"), but their cha sui is probably the best I've had in Dallas so far. I really enjoy the 2 noodle dishes I've tried, but out of the two I think the beef flat noodle is better, though the flat noodles with black bean is less oily and uses fresh green peppers. Also, their homemade hot chili sauce is has this subtly spicy taste that makes you want to put it over everything. Ambience: casual, good for groups. Service: efficient, but not especially friendly, which i find to be a trademark of good Chinese restaurants. Recommendation: This is my current favorite Chinese place, my previous favorite place being Royal Sichuan (I know, they are different cuisines, but I guess I'm Sichuan-ed out!). Also, I like to migrate to the bobo latte shop next door (with the cutest and sweetest servers) for something sweet with which to end my meal. Though the food may be good here, the staff from cashier/waitress have poor attitude and manners. To give you a sense of how poor, you don't even have to say anything to me and that'll be acceptable. I'm happy here to pay for your food only, and don't even mind not having service at all, but why would you need to treat me with disrespect. I grew up with the same type of family of immigrant culture, these people could have been my parents. So I understand it is a struggle to stay afloat and depressing to be confined to this line of work as age severely limits the opportunity to assimilate as an immigrant. So they're perpetuated with fear of being an undesired worker to remain working jobs that yield them no growth or pleasure in order to provide for their family. But if the owners don't mediate the problem by either paying their staff more or treating them better so that they may have a better attitude, the business will either remain stagnant or decline due to poor service. I understand it sucks but hope others who have felt the same way to not take too personally their poor service. Ironically, I've been quite mad several times. First Chinese BBQ would be considered standard Chinese fare in other major metro areas in the United States, but because this is Texas it's most certainly one of the better places to frequent. The service is utilitarian, but it's very efficient and I like that. The duck, pork, crispy noodles, and the wanton soup are the winners here. Also if you like intestine, chitterlings, then you're in luck, they have them and for cheap. This isn't gourmet food, but it's cheap, plentiful, and satisfying. It was just another hot September day in the Big D, the kind that'll drain a 10-gallon jug of iced tea before noon, the sort of heady day that saps your strength like the 8th year of a 5-year marriage, when the romance is gone and all that's left are a pair of kids on the lawn, a minivan in the garage, and a leftover pot roast warming in the oven. Dogs were panting in the streets like sumo wrestlers on the second leg of a Houston Marathon, type 'A' personalities were being dialed back to type 'C', and even the horn toads had taken to their burrows and were phoning in the day's work. I'd been working on the Smokehouse case, recovering a lost file when the phone rang. But it wasn't the help desk in New Delhi on line 2, it was my partner, Blue Eyes, the best gumshoe I'd ever met west of the Ole Miss .. and I didn't travel much to the Big Apple. She had picked up word from Babyface, her favorite stool pigeon, about trouble stirring down by the docks at 1st BBQ. The place had undergone a major renovation, and rumors were circulating that the Triads had infiltrated the wait staff. Their attitude was on strike, went the scuttlebutt, and honest customers were paying the price. So I assembled the usual crew to check out the noise and see what ran - the daily special or my size 12 feet. There was no client footing the bill this time, but that's how I liked to play it, with no one else calling the shots but my trigger finger and the man upstairs. Sure, I could use the bread, but the place had been an old hangout of mine, back in the days when Babyface was still wearing size 2 diapers and the price of West Texas Crude was cheaper than two tickets to the late show and a large buttered popcorn, no salt. I owed them one, you could say, for old time's sake. The Old First had been a treasure, a gem to be cherished, front and center on the mantelpiece over the fireplace, locked away in a glass cabinet and framed in the richest mahogany money could buy. But like a dame who's still there the morning after, the Old First had overstayed her welcome, and other, prettier faces had beckoned from the crowd with sweet, honeyed lips and curved, meaty ribs that ran all the way up. It was with these thoughts in mind that I walked up to the front door of the Old First, its red sign a scrawl of Chinese inscrutable as the characters waiting inside. I put my trepidation aside and stepped across the threshold to fall 10,000 miles into the bustling streets of Kowloon. Mandarin and Cantonese clucked in the air like an overturned KFC supply truck and a pair of butchers were frantically working the crowd pressing the front counter. A brace of ducks hung from meat hooks in the display, like roasted leather versions of the latest members of Bush's Cabinet left to swing in the partisan breeze. I was quickly spotted like a leopard in off-season colors and pulled out from the bustle by a waitress with a kindly smile that told me dinner was the only thing on the menu. Blue Eyes and Babyface waved us over; they had gotten one of the tables that had a glass turntable mounted in the center. It let groups of patrons share in the immense bounty their $20 of loose change and laundry money could afford. It was a set up straight from the Old Country, like a culinary version of spin-the-bottle, with joy and delight on every stop, instead of the bitter awkwardness of adolescent shame and regret that would later cost you 5Gs in therapy to forget that yes, you were the first guy to kiss Jenny Neddlehoffer in 9th grade, and very likely the last living thing to do so voluntarily. Getting down to business, I scanned the menu for the old familiars and the newest temptations. There were more home runs on the list than in San Fran after Barry Bonds pumped a dose of 'vitamins'. The roast pork was a must, as was a cauldron of the shrimp won ton soup we used to call the One Ton. $5 to the gallon was a hard price to beat, and the huge shrimp and savory broth made it a no-brainer, even for the likes of Babyface. I had to pass on the duck feet, though; I didn't see the point in dabbling with the shoes when a little extra bought the whole ensemble, and Blue Eyes ordered a lo mein to round out the meal. On cue, Blue Eyes and I tested the waters with a game of What Should I Order?, with my partner playing the part of the indecisive customer. The waitress had a look that told me she'd been through it all a million times before, but she handled it with class and style. Maybe it was just the right night, or maybe she took a shine to the grin on Babyface's mug, but dinner came in just two shakes of a stick with a smile and a refresher of iced tea that hit all the right spots. It was all just as I had remembered, and every ounce as good as the gold in Fort Knox. The pork stole the show, like someone with talent would if they ever got on American Idol. This is my favorite place to get roasted duck and pork! Their bbq pork is also some of the best you can get. You know its authentic when the menu is printed in Chinese for their regulars. They have a lot of home-style dishes that are far better then anything you can get from the awful chain places like Pei Wei (disgusting) or Panda Express. Its beyond me why anybody would eat the phoney starchy-sauce laden overpriced stuff they serve at PF Chang's. And yes, I have eaten there b/c I was with some clueless friends who swore it was good Chinese food. They are sadly unenlightened. Other dishes that are really good here are their beef flat noodle dish( dry-meaning not the soup), the crispy pork chops, chinese broccoli, snow pea tips, Clams in black bean or garlic sauce, crispy fried tofu with shrimp, Crispy shrimp or squid and spicy fried whole fish. IF you have to have something more caucasian friendly then the Orange chicken is tasty. This place is not the cleanest or the fanciest but its some of the best Chinese food you'll eat in Dallas. Most staff at a chinese restuarant like this are typically subpar, but the people here are cordial and polite. That matters. Food is very good. Pleasant interior, quiet, people really enjoying their food. The clientele appeared to be 2/3rd Asian the day I was there, with 1/3 Caucausians who appeared to be the "find the real thing" types. Daily special signs are in a Chinese dialect, only. Menu items are in Chinese, adventurous English, and (thankfully) numbered. It's really a hit or miss for me. I usually go to First Chinese for their chinese barbecue cart options. Roast duck, roast pork, and barbecue pork are the standard which you should get. The thing is that the roast pork and duck varies every day. Some days the duck and pork are extremely meaty with the right amount of fat. Other days the meats are almost entirely fat. Prices are good, averaging $6.50 - $7 per pound of meat. If only texas barbecue prices used that pricing system as well read more

I've heard lots of good things about First Chinese BBQ from friends that grew up in Plano/Richardson, so my coworker and I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, there were only two of us, so we just ordered some kong xing cai (I thinkkk it's called water spinach in english?) and some beef flat noodle (gan zhao niu he). Both were a little on the greasy side and I felt like the noodles weren't really that flavorful. In retrospect, we should have order char siu instead. duh, it's in the name! Okay, for me, this is as good as it gets in Dallas. My family essentially discovered this place when I was in high school (the Arlington location). Despite the 30 minute drive, we would always go after church and eat at First Chinese. I'm not full blooded Chinese by any stretch of the imagination but I can only surmise that this is as good as Mom's cooking. While I moved on and moved to school in Dallas, my classmates and I would make the occasional excursion from downtown Dallas to the Richardson location all for the love of one dish - BBQ Pork Fried Rice I'm a regular white rice kind of guy, but my friends were hooked on the BBQ Pork Fried Rice. My favorites are the crispy shrimp (I eat the entire thing tail and all - yum), combination hotpot, black cod fish with black bean sauce, and the BBQ pork and wonton noodle soup. We became such regulars that the owners and even the busboy knew what we were going to order. Just remember, bring cash b/c it's cash money only. Got in for a break since we were driving from Houston to Oklahoma. Non of us was hungry so we ordered wonton soup egg noodles bowl for each person and roast duck dish + BBQ pork dish. Tasty food, inexpensive, waitservice okay (it's a Chinese restaurant - don't go for the "service") and I'll definitely return...sure, I've had better in LA, SF, and Honolulu but when you're in Dallas, stop here for solid Cantonese. Portions are huge, got several takeaway boxes for leftovers - and I'll always get some of the hanging char siu or roast pork (in the display case, near the cash register) to take home for my own dishes. Our family had the following: wonton noodle soup with roast duck, orange chicken, clams with black bean sauce, char siu lo mein (soft noodles), beef with sin choy, sesame chicken, oyster sauce chicken and vegetables w/ the chow fun (flat) noodles. Wonton soup was an excellent starter. Sesame chicken was delicious. Clams with black bean sauce were average, while the orange chicken's anise finish (five-spice?) was nice, if a bit strong. Sin choy should have been more pickled/sour, but again, that's just my preference. Not really partial to chow fun noodles drenched in that syrupy, vegetable-chicken medley....couldn't really appreciate the noodles when the dish is that "wet". Less sauce and vegetables is what I'd recommend. The soft noodle dish w/ the char siu is terrific, though. Have to remember to bring my own Chinese mustard next time, as the packets they give you to make your soyu-mustard dipping sauce aren't very good. I ordered the beef with bamboo shoots and mushrooms as well as their sweet and sour soup and I enjoyed this meal until the very last bite. I can not wait to go back there again! This restaurant gets 4/5 stars only because they don't take credit cards and that's a hassle. I think they should really upgrade to accepting all methods of payment. I visited First Chinese today, with some Yelp information in-hand, and it was an alright experience. First I noted the (in)famous duck displayed at the front of the store. It wasn't as graphic as I had pictured in my head. We were sat down quickly, and our drink orders were taken. I looked through the expansive menu and I couldn't believe some of the crazy concoctions that they were offering. I've been to a lot of developing nations, and I'm used to seeing (and eating) really odd pieces of animals. Seeing entire dishes dedicated to those parts in this menu made me both smirk and gag. So goes it, some people like it, some people don't. This place has a legit Chinese feel to it (as much as you can get in Dallas, I'm sure) and a high majority of the clientele was speaking Chinese. One gentleman next to me was taking in a Chinese newspaper, and it brought me some odd sense of satisfaction. I was out of my element a bit, but I enjoy this feeling. I ordered the Orange Beef as a Yelper had mentioned that it was good. I was served a large platter of beef and broccoli smothered in some dark crimson sauce with a smattering of chili peppers. Not a bad dish overall, the beef was far more crispy than I would like, and did somewhat have the consistency of beef jerky. I wouldn't say it was spectacular, but it did pass the 'alright' test. What really got me (and how odd this is) is that I started eating the sauce on some of the provided rice, and it was like crack to me. I don't know WHAT they put in the sauce (or where they buy the jar, either/or) but on rice, it just hit my palate in a good way. I really liked the flavor, far more than the beef. My friend had the wonton soup bowl with duck, and he seemed to scarf it down. I tried a piece of the duck but it just wasn't that tasty. I don't eat duck often; I'm no connoisseur, so take that with a grain of salt. And as other Yelpers noted, it is a cash only establishment, so no credit cards here. Pros: Great food for a low price, especially the duck and noodle items. The kids also love the place. The ability to order meat at the front makes for easy food to bring home or to a party. Cons: The place is authentic, so much so that most of the waitresses don't speak English very well. More than 1/2 of the times we've been one of the items was different than we'd ordered. Food is good but service is the worst. We dined in, ordered some dishes off the menu but saw the Bbq display and it look delicious so we got up and order at the Bbq station. Apparently, you cannot order at the Bbq station and bring the food back to your table or else you'll get screamed at by multiple servers. They told us we cannot eat "to-go" Bbq at the table. And if we wanted Bbq, we needed to order directly from the menu. We just didn't understand since the food came from the same place. We were just looking for some good Chinese food off the beaten path, but we got so much more.... Imagine when you enter a case off to your right with hanging whole roasted ducks, crispy and succulent. Also are small slabs of roasted pork, tinged with red and small pans with unknown but surprisingly flavorful parts of the animal you apparently can eat. This is 1st Chinese BBQ. First dish - Hot and Sour Soup. Bits of pork. Check. Matchstick bamboo shoots. Check. Tofu. Check. Wood Ear Fungus. Check. Gossamer threads of egg. Check. Popping twang of black vinegar. Check. Mmmmmm. Next. Family dishes - BBQ pork crispy noodle, orange chicken, special chinese sausage. FIrst off HUGE portions. Crispy bed of noodles with vegggies and roasted pork piled on. All good. Orange chicken was not super sweet, had great orange taste and a bit of sourness. Crunchy coating, hot and moist on the inside. Nice execution. Special chinese sausage. Not the sweet chinese sausage I was expecting. I think they gave me crispy pig intestine by mistake. Not horrible but a swing and a miss. Grumpy service, wonderful food. Cash only, but its totally worth the trip to the ATM. Definitely coming back to eat through the menu. This is 1st Chinese BBQ. Don't forget it! read more

So if you've lived in Dallas for a while, you know -- there's not a lot of great Chinese food. There's plenty of Vietnamese, Thai, Sushi and fusion food to go around, but authentic Chinese food? Not so much. Or at least I thought... until now. First Chinese BBQ is a very casual, VERY authentic, Chinese food restaurant. If you're squeamish at the site of roast duck with its head still on, make sure you look to the left when you walk in the door because it's hanging right there. The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired, but you're really not there for the environment - you're there for the food. The service was quick and efficient. The BBQ roast duck and pork was rich and sweet. The kung pao chicken was some of the best I've had. They bring a giant pot of steamed rice to your table to share. The portions are huge and the prices are cheap. You'll have plenty of leftovers to take home with you. We'll definitely be coming back here next time we're craving authentic Chinese food! I'm been to this place for 25 years, they updated it 10 years ago maybe which was nice. The one thing that hasn't changed is the food & the service. The food has always been consistently good, the BBQ pork & roasted duck is tasty. Pretty much everything on the menu is good. Of course the service has always been consistently terrible & that hasn't changed the last 25 years. Unless you speak Chinese or Vietnamese you won't get better service (even then, that's a maybe).
