You're forced to tip more before leaving. Generally, I always tip at restaurants as I've worked in the food industry. However upon leaving, the server stopped me at the door to ask for more tip and that it is not included in the bill. I am a wonton soup connoisseur. I have traveled far and wide to get good wonton soup (the best yet strangely being at Banana Leaf Malaysian in Philadelphia) and I'm not talking about those thick rubbery mystery meat filled grosseries you get in Americanized Chinese places. Oh no. Paper thin delicate wrappers, succulent chunks of meaty filling, hearty marrow soaked broth and hopefully some tasty vegetables floating in there. That's what I'm on the constant lookout for, and First Chinese BBQ consistently delivers. I order the shrimp filled wonton soup (no noodles), add kai lan (Chinese broccoli) and BBQ pork. It's a hearty meal, comforting and warming, although not too heavy when it's hot outdoors (aka, every month except January in Texas). Their other dishes are pretty amazing, too- the BBQ pork/duck are fantastic over perfectly cooked white rice, beef flat noodles with black bean sauce, szechuan eggplant and crispy tofu being some of my personal favorites. It's the small, non-descript places that usually have the best food. First Chinese BBQ fits that bill to the T as it's tucked away in the corner of a strip mall that you'd most likely miss if you didn't keep an eye out. But as soon as you walk in, you'll know you're in the right place as you'll see casting call rejects of the Aflac commercials hanging out getting a quick tan. I usually eat here once every 2 or three months as any more would cause a significant increase in belt size since everything I've tried has been delicious. The portions are family size, from the noodles to the fried rice and vegetable dishes, shareable or takehomeable, whatever your perspective. Menu #203, A-13, and 201 are what you come here for. Don't ask what they are, just come in, sit down, tell the nice lady that you're there for #203, 201, and A-13. Or don't ----if you're allergic to crab, duck, or general bbq awesomeness. This place ruined chinese food for me...possibly forever. The service and the food was the worst we've ever had. Ordered the bbq pork and duck, combination noodles, and shrimp fried rice. The worst food we have ever eaten in our life. In fact, we only took a few bites of each. The bbq dish and the noodles were cold and hard, as in just took out from the fridge cold. The fried rice was decent but we could tell that it wasn't fresh either. As far the service, after the food was delivered, no one came to check on us. My husband literally had to go looking for a knife and condiments on nearby empty tables. They only take cash so after we got our change, the lady asked for a tip. This is the place where Asians go when they want good Chinese food. It's the best in Dallas. Even CNN recognized this in their article- 50 best Chinese restaurants in the United States- written this past March. I've been eating here since I was a child. The place is always filled and, oftentimes, there is a wait during dinner time. Make sure you have cash because credit cards are not accepted. Some of my favorite things to order are crispy egg noodle with beef or seafood, crispy shrimp (it is the foshizzle), Hong Kong style shrimp, sauteed water spinach, crispy chicken, and shrimp fried rice. Actually, the crispy noodle is required any time we eat here. Then, when you are done eating, you can stop by Boba Latte, right next door, and have a bubble tea for dessert. Being a Chinese guy (albeit born in the US), I have a pretty high standard for Chinese food. We normally don't eat at Chinese restaurants because my mother-in-law (Taiwanese) cooks a multicourse dinner for the entire family every Sunday. It's hard to beat her food. It's much healthier, better prepared and equally as tasty as the best Chinese joints in DFW. When we do get the penchant to go out for some honest and delicious Chinese food , 1st BBQ makes the immediate short list. The food is authentic enough for Asians (whole roasted ducks hanging by their necks will greet you as you enter the place) and hardcore Oriental foodies, but there are also dishes for more conservative diners that aren't as experienced with Chinese cuisine. Be warned that the cooks definitely have large containers of cooking oil, salt, and MSG as part of their 'mise en place'. However, if you are counting calories, bring an abacus, but know that they will not go wasted on the food here. The food is Cantonese style so you will get classics like wonton soup, lo mein, fried noodles, flat noodles, and an assortment of BBQ'ed meats (duck, chicken and pork). You can get basic fried rice or kick it up a notch by adding morsels of salted fish. Go with a big group so you can order a bunch of dishes to eat family style and share. It's relatively clean for a restaurant in Chinatown, but the obligatory layer of grease that covers all surfaces proves that you are in an authentic Chinese joint. read more

So maybe living in So Cal and then the bay area has made me a chinese BBQ snob, but I thought the food here was just OK. The BBQ pork (Char Siu, or Xa Xiu) was just acceptable, and the pan fried noodles with seafood were a bit of a disappointment ( overcooked squid and canned mushrooms) The roast duck and the szechwan eggplant were both good, but not up to the level of a sam woo, or even a good 99 Ranch. Ask me in 2 years and I'll probably be raving about this place, but let's just say it's not up to the best that millbrae and monterey park have to offer The other thing that surprised me was that it was impossible to order off the menu. Understandable, but usually you can just ask for combinations of what they offer and they can make it happen ( like say, squid with chinese broccoli in garlic sauce). This leads me to believe that a lot of the food is premade and in big pots in the back; either that, or my ordering kung fu has been bested. LOVE this place. Been here a handful of times and each time fills me up, AND provides leftovers for 2-3 additional meals. I used to work in a Chinese restaurant in college, and the food that the chefs would cook up for the family-style, employee meals was some of the best food I've had. Walking into FCB yesterday, all the employees were out and lunching and I had immediate flashbacks. :D The BBQ pork and either the water spinach or snow pea leaves with garlic are standards at my meals here. Other dishes are rotated in as desired. Noodle dishes are tasty, the shrimp wonton soup have great, plump shrimp inside the delicate wonton wrappers, and the fried rice is delicious and NOT a dark brown from an overdose of soy sauce. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant on the planet so far, and has been since I was fifteen years old. I can't describe how perfect everything always comes out, the food glistening like suculent fruits to be picked off the plate. Of course, if you are going for the Hong Kong style barbecue, you'll be in store for some delicious roast or barbecued pork, roasted duck or chicken, and other unmentionables that should be left for more oriental palates (can we say organ-ic?). My favorite items to order are as follows: orange beef or chicken, young chow fried rice, any of the soft or hard noodle dishes, the braised bok choy, and of course anything with the BBQ pork in it. Once in a while I will venture away from these gringo plates that they seem to have perfected, but not that often since I only get to eat here when I come home to visit. The service is quick, reliable, not all that friendly at times, but they get the job done. It's also a great place to get take-out. Just remember it's cash only. And yes, there are other locations, but this one is the original, so you kind of have to give it credit for that too. I used to frequent it when it was half the size, much dirtier (now it's like a modern restaurant), there was one of those bathrooms you'd rather not have to use. I have been going to this establishment since I was a little kid and twenty years later the food is stilllllll good! Food: If you want to experience cheap, good, authentic, Cantonese food. This is it! I would recommend the Won-ton noodle soup. Be sure to get it with duck because it complements the meal very nicely. Though, most of the food is great, this is always the dish I get. However, if you are going with a group of people and want to emulate family dinner style be sure to order rice and fried noodles (as a base) to share. Then order at least 3 dishes to share amongst yourselves. I would recommend the fried noodles (it looks like a bird's nest) and it comes with sauce, peas in a pod, mushrooms, beef, and broccoli; get a fish dish, and any BBQ (duck/pork is really nice and is also accompanied by a delicious sauce). It's up to your discretion on how you like it to be cooked. (tip: Nobody likes a double dipper-same thing with chopsticks. If sharing dishes, be sure to turn the chopsticks upside down (the bigger end) and retrieve the food. But not to worry, most of the dishes come with serving spoons, but sometimes it's just easier to use a chopstick) Also, be sure to order Hot Jasmine Tea. For me, it's a nice touch. One order of tea comes with 2-4 cups. Atmosphere: This place reminds me of a restaurant that is tucked inside China Town or when Big took Carrie to an authentic Chinese restaurant and she thought he didn't want anyone to see them together (Sex and The City Reference). Be prepared to walk into a very small restaurant (they actually expanded it, but it's still quite small). You will be greeted by hanging ducks, pigs, and chickens on hooks, a butcher cutting up meat, and a display of stomach, intestine, etc (in case you were wondering). When sitting down, I still look forward to seeing the red, paper Asian horoscope that is used as a place mat. Most likely the place will be packed and you will have to wait a good 15 minutes. When you look inside the dining area you will see a sea of Asian people eating a good family dinner. The waitstaff are nice, but also quick on their toes. As someone who has grown up eating absolutely excellent Chinese food from both my mother and my grandmother, I've become spoiled by what can only be described as superb Chinese food. My parents not being one to spend money foolishly, very rarely did they go out for Chinese food. When they did, it was to First Chinese BBQ. (Having just said that, I feel like I just recited a Dos Equis commercial) I grew up eating First Chinese BBQ, and haven't found anything else that comes close to the authenticity of Chinese as my relatives have made. We went to First Chinese back when it was fairly run down - as it is now, the entire shopping center and restaurant is remodeled and overhauled - nice wall colors, new tables/chairs, very modern looking. The earliest memories I have of this place were of light blue/green walls, traditional Asian chairs/tables, and an odd smell that one could only attribute to fish or the roasted duck/pig hanging in the window as soon as you walk in. My favorite soup, then or now, would always start off with Wonton noodle soup. A big bowl of noodles, a delicious shrimp broth with green onions, and about 6-8 shrimp wontons. Always has been and always will be my favorite appetizer anywhere, anytime. My favorite meal is, then or now, beef pan fried dried noodles. One of the few phrases I actually know in Chinese, in case I have to order it and the waitress doesn't know English. It's a delicious melody of dry noodles, pan fried and seasoned with pepper, light and dark soy sauce, also combined with beef, bean sprouts, and green onions. I could eat the entire plate by myself if I had to...it's that good. Everything else I've had is quite good, and that's pretty much everything - stir fry, crispy noodles with vegetables, any of the chicken/beef dishes, etc. One bad thing - they're not a fan of credit cards, so make sure you bring cash. First Chinese BBQ is absolutely our most favorite Chinese restaurant to dine at. We are Chinese by heritage so we always want something authentic when we dine out and crave for Chinese food. For us, FCB is one of the most authentic Chinese food you can find in Dallas. They have some different locations across the Metroplex and having dined at two of their locations I would say they deliver great meals consistently. In places like this, though, please don't expect a five star waiter service. Whenever we go to FCB with a group of friends, everybody knew already what we all are going to order. The Sesame Chicken here is probably some of the best I have ever had. The sauce coats the chicken and broccoli and has a great flavor. The BBQ Pork was my least favorite of the items we had today. It had good flavor, I just thought it was just a little much. CHINESE BBQ. NOM. We've been going here for years but I swear the quality has gone down a bit. The BBQ is still pretty good -- juicy, well-flavored, fatty, still bad for your diet plan. OK- I'm still a bit traumatized by the whole ordeal, but here goes..... found this place on Yelp, of course, so my husband and I HAD to check it out after a stop at the ATM to get cash (who carries cash nowadays?). I wasn't phased by the roasting meat hanging in the window when you first walk in- I could have done without looking at the duck heads still in tact, but oh well, this place is authentic so I had to go with it. When we sat down, our server was all over us like white on rice.....the menu is very big, and being newbies, we needed a few minutes- so we told her so, and she left. Exactly 32 seconds later, she was back trying to take our order. We told her again that we still needed more time, and off she went. This time she came back in 45 seconds. By this time my husband knew what he wanted- I didn't, so I panicked under pressure and ordered the first thing I saw: bbq pork and marinated chicken over rice. The food came out really quick. Maybe I am not as authentic loving as I thought- the chicken still had bones and the pork was grisly and chewy. After I spit out some fat or whatever in a napkin, my husband noticed my dissatisfaction and suggested I order another dish. So I did. I ordered the chicken soft noodle, which was a much better choice than my original dish. I would give this place 3 stars, but my husband loved it. He had roast pork and said it was crispy and good. He got a side of broccoli "stumps" that the server said she would charge $1 for but she never did. Now I see what they do with the stumps after all the broccoli tops go into the dishes, they recycle them as a side dish. What ever sauce they put on it is actually good so that makes up for the fact that you are eating broccoli waste. There was enough food for leftovers so we brought it home and ate it again for dinner. I think I liked mine better at the restaurant. I tried to use the bathroom before we left and there was a non-moving line (must be a onesie), so I can't comment on the bathroom facilities. Second time here and had the lemon grass ribs, because I read my friend Mark S. review. This dish is a winner!! Awesome flavors, including my all time favorite ginger. We had also beef bbq- great sauce and vegetables were very crispy, perfect- and another dish I don't recall. When I ate there the first time about a year ago, I thought the restaurant was very good. My opinion has changed dramatically. I guess they've had it for too good for too long. Great if you've never had good Chinese food or just moved to Dallas and don't know any better otherwise STAY AWAY!!!! The food was horrible, the shrimp were not fresh, the black bean sauce had about 8 black beans in it, there was nothing special about the special sauce. This is a Hong Kong BBQ style restaurant. They actually speak Contonese here, which I've found as a rarity here in Dallas. The roast duck here was good. The Char-Siu (BBQ Pork) simply didn't have any taste. There was plenty of red food coloring- and we're not talking a deep red. We're talking a very unnatural bright neon red. The beef pan fried noodles are tasty. This is one of my favorite dishes, so it's hard for me not to like. This comes in a large portion, definitely enough for 2. 3.5 stars. We found this place through yelp. I wasn't really hungry before hand but as we approached the restaurant, the aroma made my stomach growl "feed me!" The waiting area was packed with hungry people. Although it was packed, turnover was very quick. Environment: Simple but tasteful decor. Surprisingly clean (at least from the surface) for a quick stop Chinese BBQ place. Service: Friendly but to-the-point staff. (perfect for a quick but satisfying meal) I usually don't expect much from the service aspect when it comes to these BBQ places and do not use it as a review criteria, but service exceeded my expectations. (for a place like this) Food: best Chinese BBQ I've had in Texas. Pork: cooked to a perfect crisp on the outside yet juicy on the inside. Char siu: not too sweet. When I was waiting in line, I noticed they were careful to frequently coat the outside with sauce so that the meat would not dry. There are few places that I actually like char siu at and this is one of them. The other thing that I really appreciated about the BBQ dishes were the way they cut the meat. I know it is a small detail, but it was cut in a way and in a size that is easier to eat than other places. I find at the HK style BBQ places, I'm usually left with several pieces to pick at that nobody wants. This was not the case here. The duck noodle soup with wonton was pretty good. The noodles certainly could have been better in terms of texture and style, but the broth, duck and wonton were all on point. The pan fried noodles were nicely done as well, though it was a little lacking in sauce for my taste. I'd recommend this place. Perhaps a 4.5 is more appropriate, but given comparison to similar restaurants and the price point, it certainly leans more to a 5 if I have to pick between the two. read more

The definitive Chinese restaurant in Dallas serving fantastic, authentic Cantonese Chinese food. None better anywhere except possibly San Francisco or New York. We eat here (Richardson) a minimum of once a week. And have done so for the last 25 years. I get terrible First Chinese BBQ withdrawals if I miss a week. Must be my NYC upbringing. I love the shrimp won-ton soup, BBQ roast duck, mustard greens, clams with ginger and green onion, shrimp with crispy noodles, oysters with ginger & green onions, and shrimp or pork egg foo yung. Plus, about a dozen more dishes. They also do a great Peking Duck. But, you have to ask for it as it's not on the regular menu. It's only listed on one of the Chinese menus on the wall. Some people complain about the service. But if you visit often enough, the serving ladies will remember you and warm up very quickly and be happy to talk to you. And don't forget. Having spent nearly a year in Hong Kong/Kowloon eating chinese food at least for one meal each day, I think I have honed my chinese food taste buds and can differentiate between good, better and excellent. I have to give First Chinese BBQ only a good. The quality of the food was mediocre and a lot of the food was pretty bland. Plus the amount of red food colouring got to me as well. I know that a lot of folks love this place, including my girlfriend and I have gone there three seperate times, hoping that the food would be better but I have been disappointed each time I have gone there. This hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant really doesn't look like much at first glance, but the food is incredible. The star of the menu, in my mind at least, is the roast duck. Crispy skin, tender meat, perfectly seasoned. It goes great with the sautéed Chinese broccoli. The other menu items look great, but we always seem to come back to our favorites. The service is pretty typical for many casual Asian restaurants - they thrive on quick turnover, so there is a slight tendency to rush you on ordering, eating, paying, and leaving. But for these prices and this quality of food, who can complain. We usually get a whole roast duck to go - it actually reheats remarkably well. The only reason why I wouldn't give this restaurant a 5 star is because they don't take card. It's a cash only restaurant. The service isn't so friendly as well. This goes to the one in Garland and Arlington. But as far as food, I love the duck and pork. If the meat isn't fresh or is old, it won't taste that great. I usually have their wonton noodle soup once a month. I hate how they don't have sriracha sauce though. I've never had anything here that I dislike. I had high hopes for this place based on the other reviews and other recommendations I had gotten for it. We left the restaurant so angry we on several times considered walking out without paying the check. I thought the food was alright. Nothing fantastic but no problems with it. We came in and looked at the menu and decided what to order. I got the roast duck on rice and my husband got a noodle meal. Waitress came over and we ordered and then I checked into Yelp. I'm glad I did because I was able to use the check-in as a point of reference for time. After about 10 minutes my duck came and we shared it. I'm glad we didn't wait for the next dish. Around this time we saw another family walk in. Took close to 20 minutes for the next dish to come out. I don't know how it works in Chinese culture but in American culture typically you don't start eating until everyone has their food. Bring dishes out 20 minutes apart from each other is just annoying. As we were finishing eating the dish that came 20 minutes late, the other family that walked in ordered, got their food, got take out boxes, and paid. We finished eating and sat there FOR AN ENTIRE HALF AN HOUR waiting for take out boxes and a check and NO ONE came to refill our drinks or anything. We kept trying to flag down whatever waitress came anywhere remotely near us and nothing. Ok, this place is getting better & better. Must try: the crispy tofu. Holy hell. Also soft noodle dish w/ bbq pork or fried rice w/ bbq pork. But, you must try the tofu. We brought a girl here who promised us she did not like tofu, and last week she was like, can we go back to that place & get that tofu?? She is a believer! This is probably the best Chinese food I've had in Dallas yet. I grew up with the best in Houston's Chinatown + homecooking. The flat noodle is great, the char-siu (bbq pork) is a bit on the sweet side, the roast pork is crunchy and soft (fantastic). You can ask them for "snow pea leaves w/ garlic" as a vegetable dish, even though I don't think it was on the menu and sometimes they have it. It's one of my favorite Chinese vegetables *ever*! Sometimes they have water spinach instead...it'll do. They take cash only, the decor/atmosphere is simple, and can be a bit rude if you're slow and they're busy. But I'd go for the food anyway when I need a taste of home. :) read more

The worst of their locations. Their roast duck is mainly bones/skin and the roast pork is always cold. Ordered both again tonight and was sorely disappointed yet again. My main advice is to come here full so you can pig out on everything. The menu is pretty extensive, and I have a feeling there is really nothing bad to order. What I recommend to all of you... The shrimp wonton soup. I'm always reluctant to order this in restaurants I've never been to, because it can be so hit or miss. Holy crap, it was AWESOME!!! The shrimps and wontons were seriously great for how fast all the food comes out. We got the roast duck, and I'm assuming this is a popular item. Again, food was excellent and the portion really big. And last but not least, we wanted a meat dish, so we randomly got Schezuan Beef using "eenie meenie minie mo" (sp?... I have never written that down before). And I don't know about you guys, but when Chinese restaurants choose to cut their pieces of beef into small thin slices as opposed to bigger pieces, is there also a party in your mouth also?? Because that's what happens to me, a party. In my mouth. Yea, service is not there. Yea, there's no credit cards. Yea, you or a friend have to run somewhere and get cash because you realize you don't have any. Yea, you can stare at the hanging ducks while you wait while a friend gets the cash. CASH ONLY!!!! The roast duck and wonton noodle soup is everything. Also love the BBQ pork, seafood crispy noodle and cashew shrimp. But everything is pretty good! Be prepared to slip into a major food coma though. read more

Sad to leave only two stars but I feel this place is going downhill. We used to enjoy the wonton noodle soup, beef flat noodle and BBQ pork but lately the food isn't that appealing anymore because of the ambiance. The place looks and "feels" dirty. The floors, walls ... everywhere you look you can sense OIL and dirt. I am surprised they pass health inspections here. The "clientele" is also going downhill. You can't enjoy a meal when there are loud and obnoxious customers around you. Even my loud and obnoxious six year old daughter commented about the noise level- and she likes noise!!!! Everyone that works here looks miserable too. Not sure what the change is but the restaurant has gone downhill. My advice to the owners... invest in a remodel and start accepting credit cards. Cash only looks "suspicious." Look at how a remodel helped Jeng Chi down the street! After a decade of being loyal customers ... we won't be back. read more
