I aggravated my shoulder lifting weights so I decided to come by Firm Hands massage and rehabilitation center. I've come with my wife for her massage appointment but the renovated building and additional equipment is phenomenal. They have and infrared sauna, hot and cold plunge therapy, cryptheropy iceless cold and heat compression therapy sleeves for injuries (that's what I came for), and of course their Sport, Deep Tissue, Swedish Massage, and Back, Shoulder and Neck massages. Jonathan CURED my cervical radiculopathy with sport massage. I was in severe pain for months (and mild pain for years), was on nerve medication, going to physical therapy and getting acupuncture. My feet has never felt so good! I am trying to get into running and my body just seems to revolt against me every time I try with burning feet. But Jonathan worked some magic with my feet and calves (hurt like the dickens in the moment) but now my lower half feels brand new. He was very attentive- did a full history and review of preferences, he checked in on how things are going during the massage and even gave some hydration and sleep product suggestions afterwards to help with those areas of improvement. Go see Shannyn! She is an excellent massage therapist as well as so kind and friendly. I have been to Firm Hands several times now for a sports/trigger point massage and it is top notch. I crane my neck all day working on screens and have very locked up forearms that cause issues with my ulnar nerve. Each time I've come here, the work Shannyn does is amazing. I've been going to John for sports massages for over a year now, and he never disappoints. After being sick recently, I came in feeling really tight through my neck, shoulders, and back. He took his time working through those areas and was able to ease a lot of the tension, especially around my neck where I felt the most stiffness. How blessed am I to have found Firm Hands, which is ironically just a few houses away from my home . Having lived in Long Beach 25 years with a wonderful older massage therapist who is therapeutic I got very spoiled with house calls to my home and excellent massage for low cost. When my massage therapist fell down the stairs, and injured himself I was panicky as I have tried most massage therapists in the local area and most are very inferior with low grade energy, filthy rooms and cheap oils. I admit I was nervous to try Firm Hands but was very pleasantly surprised. Jonathan is an amazing intuitive massage therapist who truly understands the body-mind-spirit connection. He is a master of deep tissue, stretching, TMJ and myso-cranial and was very caring, friendly, truly listening to my needs. I received an excellent massage that was deep and therapeutic but at the same time respectful of my needs. The conversation flowed effortlessly like we were old friends and Jonathan and his wife obviously truly care about people and are educated those willing to listen. I learned so much. Though the pricing is quite a bit more expensive then I'm used to I know you pay for quality and I don't mind for the quind of top not quality I received. There facility is quite large with a downstairs lobby, and the rooms upstairs. I appreciate Jonathan's scientific ability have me fill out a questionnaire, and really learn my body mechanics and I was truly amazed how though this was my first massage here..... it felt like he had been working on me for years. That is so rare to meet a true master who intuitive understands muscles, alignment, stress patterns .. and I loved when he said "I treat my clients like athletes. And it is so true people don't necessarily understand though one might not be an athlete by profession the repetitive motion of work can effect everything. I'm a concert classical and jazz pianist and vocalist and coach and sometimes I'm pounding Gershwin or Prokofiev for hours or singing and overusing jaw muscles. He understand this and went to spots I needed release in. The massage room was clean and comfortable. I can tell too he is adaptable to people's needs. I asked for no music, low lights, and just natural oil no perfumes and he not only was prepared with various styles but was happy to show me all ingredients etc. At times the massage was intense which I like. Meaning it showed me my patterns and I just breathed and he worked and together released a lot of stress, and patterns. The 4th was specifically rough here in LB. So it felt great to work a lot of it out. I will definitely refer clients in the neighborhood to them. I met also his associate massage therapist and wife who seemed very friendly and caring. Love this place! Helping me tremendously with my post op knee replacement. Their Game Ready machine has a sleeve that compresses well above and below my knee, with alternating heat and cold. Look, full transparency, I'm a friend of the owner but the fact of the matter is that if you have ailments in your joints, muscles, and bones. I truly believe in what Jon and his team do for the human body is important and it f***in' works! Don't believe me, well, "Let me put you on game," as the great Kendrick Lamar most famously said. I'm a 42 year old man that doesn't stretch before gettin' buckets, doesn't fuel my body nearly as well as I should so of course I'm going to suffer with the inflammation and soreness and tightness and all the things as the kids say. Yeah, I'm a bit overweight too which doesn't help but Firm Hands could, periodt. Recently, I took him up on an offer to fix me up a bit at his facility including the type of equipment he KNEW would keep me on the court or playing with my son (and hush up my complaining if you ask him). Jonathon explain every step AND their benefits AND their purposes without me having to ask or worse just nod in acceptance. We began with a circulation machine for the coldness in my lower legs, moved on to the cold plunge bath for hot tub for my joints then wrapped it up with a 30min sit in an infrared sauna. What you might be thinking is that it was a cake walk... no, no, no they didn't take it easy on me. Everything was measured, attentive, and clean down to the hydration types. Afterwards, I've notice, since the second day of recovery I've slept better and my legs (which received the brunt of the treatment as requested) has felt more balanced and painless since. I know my legs aren't fixed but they are markedly improved. Next time I will push myself to get the full-body experience. Never again. I have no idea how this place has such good reviews. I went once a while ago just because it's close to my house. The massage was decent, but the ambiance was so terrible I said I'd never go back. I did just because my back was killing me and it's so easy to get to. The "waiting room" is like sitting in a fraternity. There was a kid playing in the middle of the reception area on an iPad full blast and when I walked up to the sitting area there was a big screen tv playing a random show. Definitely not what you think before getting a relaxing massage. My actual massage was decent, once waiting at least 15 minutes on the table for the woman to come back in. BLASTING construction noise the entire time and during the massage. While my masseuse was nice, she missed several areas I'd specifically pointed out and I'm 100% sure she was on her phone for most of the massage. Her texts were coming in on vibrate the entire time and about 6 different times she paused for several minutes which I can only assume was to text. Her phone also came on a video during the pitiful one handed neck massage at the end. The neck "massage" lasted forever and felt like nothing. Usually I'm dying for a massage to NOT end and this one I almost asked her to just stop because I just wanted to leave. Last time I spend my money here. read more

Decided to try Firm Hands, because of their experience with myofascial massage. Went with the sports massage, due to injury. Purchased a package (4) 60 min massages for $390 = $97.50/ea Otherwise it's $130/hr Owner encouraged Shannyn, so decided to go with her. (Perhaps he is really busy) She did a really great job finding the knots, and creating relief! Massage is soft, though focused, and I needed to direct her what areas to focus on for each session. Though when asked to do my neck, the pressure was very weak. Worst part was being shorted on time, each and every time. Between 3 - 7 minutes. Adds up! Secondly, I was unable to schedule an appointment with Shannyn, (not sure why she can't do it herself) though, she has left repeated notes for the owner / receptionist, and I have never received a response. Shared this with Shannyn, and she seemed confused about it, too? So recommend calling same day. Though for the time being shorted, and lack of ease to schedule, and price (going elsewhere) Today was my last day. I went ahead and bought a 2nd package (during this 2 month period), but can no longer justify it. Integrity is really important, and today was the tipping point. I have to say I am disappointed with this business. It is not because of the quality of the massage, but because of the very active construction site that was not disclosed prior to booking. I booked at the very end of July 2024 for a birthday gift for my husband. Walking up the stairs we thought it was a closed business and we had made a mistake- it must closed to the public. There were multiple construction workers actively doing work, dust, and absolutely undone space. The only employee in the place turned out to be the massage therapist who apologized for their ongoing "construction work" that was very delayed, but there was no disclosure prior to arrival. It is now September 2024 and I just received an email coupon for another session which made me upset- how can a place be trusted for another session with the lack of transparency for a full price session? We paid full price plus tip for a massage in an active construction site which was frustrating and unfair. No fault of the therapist but absolutely an unfair as a consumer. read more

Had my first session last week and immediately booked an appointment for the following week. I've been going to another place in LA that wasn't getting the level of deep tissue that I needed. I also wanted to find something closer to where I live. I saw Jonathan, the owner. He started on time, discussed what areas we were going to work on, he asked what I was looking for in terms of treatment. He was very professional and talked me through what he was doing and why. He stretched my muscles while massaging the tissue at a deep level. He warmed up my muscle with a hot towel and pre-sprayed the bed with essential oils. I really wanted to like this place, and based on the amazing reviews, I thought I would. I was so wrong. The scheduling was quick and easy via Yelp. That's probably the highlight of my experience with Firm Hands. I scheduled a 1000hrs appointment with Shannon. 1000hrs comes, and no one is there, and the door is locked. It's cool as I understand things happen. She finally arrives about 5 min late, and I had to wait for her to set up and prep the office for the day. I'm still understanding because things happen. 10 minutes in, she took me to the room, asked me to select my music, and I waited another 5 minutes laying stomach down before she returned. I know because I checked my phone and the last time I saw it was 1015 hours. I still had no issue with it since I figured I'd still get my full 60 minutes. During the massage, it seemed odd that she didn't focus on the ONE area I complained about the most. While I have multiple areas of need, I specifically asked her to focus on my neck and upper back area because that's what I needed the most that day. She didn't work on my neck area till maybe the last 15 minutes where she only did a repetitive upward/downward motion with one hand. I've been fortunate (or unfortunate) to have gone through physical therapy, pain management, and thousands of massages, and not once have they been so unmotivated and dull when treating my neck area. I've also never had a massage therapist only use one hand. After a few minutes, I realized why she was only using one hand. She was on her phone, and accidentally clicked on some video which played over the relaxing music. And guess what? The massage ended 15 minutes prematurely. This has been the most expensive massage, shortest, and biggest waste of my time and money I have had to date. There are sooooo many other options locally. Save yourself the time and money and go somewhere where they're actually interested in providing qualitative services. This is not the place. read more
