This is my first time at Firewood though I have walked by this place numerous times before. You order your food at the counter and they bring it to you. There's plenty of seating (two floors) but it can get busy during weekends. I ordered the fish tacos (Cod) which I liked. I added some lime and salsa which to me, made it much better (Chipotle and lime type salsa neither of which were spicy). They have other items on their menu like pizza, burrito, burgers, and chicken strips which I will try next time we're in town. I definitely recommend this place if you're in town. read more

Pros: Fish tacos and polite female employees. Cons: Flat beer and male employee with a bad attitude. We stopped in on a Saturday before the rush at noon. The women working the cash register were cheerful and had great customer service. We ordered 805 beer and fish tacos. When we brought the beer to our table it tasted mighty flat. We walked up to the counter and spoke to a short man with glasses and a goatee who was cooking the pizzas. He just said, "that beer isn't flat" and walked off. Smug little man, I hear he has a reputation for arguing with customers. A friend of ours once had a shouting match with him over an undercooked crust. Anyway a female employee immediately approached us and offered to exchange the beer and swap out the keg. That was good customer service. This is our second time here. Both times (October 2017 and April 2018) the lady at the cash register was almost annoyed that we were there. Very unenthusiastic, and bordering on unfriendly. My first time here I was thinking it was just part of the charm of a small-town restaurant, but this time it was even worse. We waited for the people in front of us to finish their order and stepped forward to the counter. They were changing cashiers so they had to go thru the till-changing process (completely understandable) but apparently part of this place's procedure includes sharing videos on your phone of your kids and a drawn-out conversation while two customers wait literally three feet from you to place their order. Once their conversation was finished we were (finally)asked what we wanted. We ordered a burger and two drinks. The lady stepped away from the register to pour the beer. My wife asked if we could have 1000 Island dressing instead of the mayo (it says you have a choice on their menu). The hostess rolled her eyes and took a deep breath, like we were causing her a bunch of extra work. The food was alright both times. The best thing was probably my wife's gluten-free pizza. The ambiance is what you'd expect. Also none of the other employees ever had any kind of a friendly interaction with any of the other customers (after our counter experience we started watching closely; it was almost funny how disinterested they seemed). Murphy's has some great restaurants and this is one of them. It's a super casual place, that not only serves pizza, but tacos and burgers, too. I have only had the pizza, here. They make it fresh and you can only get it in one size, a 12" pizza. The price range from $11-$15. It's cut into about eight slices and enough for 2-3 people. It takes awhile before you get your food no matter whether they are busy or not. However, it's worth the wait. If you're a cheese lover like me, their Four Cheese pizza is SO good. It has mozzarella, fontina, gorgonzola and parmesan cheese. The crust isn't too thin and not too thick. The edge of the crust is fluffy and so fresh. Today, we had the Spicy Sausage and BBQ Chicken pizza. I liked the spicy sausage one, but didn't care much for the bbq pizza. The sauce was too sweet for my liking. They serve beer and wine, but you might tapped out on the booze with all the wine tasting places on the strip. You can bring your own bottle of wine for a $ 5 corkage fee. Most establishments take credit cards, but it's nice to know there's an ATM machine, in there. This is a family friendly restaurant. Being a mom, I'm always looking for kid friendly restaurants. Although my child is out of diapers, I still appreciate bathrooms with changing tables. Unfortunately, as family friendly as this place is, the bathroom has no changing table and no counter space. Everything here is good, but if you had to choose I'd probably stick with the tacos. You have choices of asada, carnitas or chicken and all three are pretty tasty. Also, the prices are very reasonable so you won't feel the pinch, but you will feel a full stomach as you decide to finish up a few more rounds of wine tasting. They also have a few quality beers on tap and the drinks are self serve, not that it really matters. I guess that kinda gives it that Costco lunch vibe but hey, for the price I'll give them a free pass on the table service. They do bring the food to you but that's pretty much the limit of table service here. This place is great for large groups because everyone can find something on the menu. This place really depends on your expectations because it's either toned down pub grub, or upscale fast food. I prefer to see upscale FF and never leave disappointed. read more

After a rather pleasant experience at Grounds, I figured a visit to their sister restaurant Firewood shouldn't be terrible. Sadly, I was very disappointed. It was one of the worst margherita pizza I have had apart from some fast food chain pizzerias. Tasteless is the word that described it precisely. The tomato sauce has very little character. The mozzeralla was not memorable. The entire pizza only has one leaf of basil which has almost no flavor. I am not even going to bother commenting on the pizza dough. The spicy sausage and the mushroom ones have more dimension but neither fit my definition of a good pie. The pizzas really should be a lot better for a place named 'Firewood'. read more

Pizza, burgers, and nachos - am I in comfort food heaven?? YASSSSS! I ordered a woodfire mushroom pizza and added ground pepperoni. The pizza was wonderful - very Meditteranean, perfect amount of oil, and was THE PERFECT end to a day of wine tasting. And yes, I had second dinner later that evening with the leftover pizza I took home - woot! My wife ordered a swiss/bacon burger. Tried a few bites and would say it was perfectly homemade and hit he spot. She said that the fries were best hot and lost some flavor as they got colder. You order up front and then find a seat, so it's very much self service beyond the order. Dinner ranged from $10-$20 and the atmosphere was super casual and very family friendly - upstairs and downstairs seating. Would definitely come back or take out. read more

Gotta say we've been coming here since the place opened about 20 years ago. We use to frequent the place when Scott was there cooking the pizzas. He was always so polite and would come around the customer tables and make sure everyone was happy with their food and such. But times have changed and I can sadly say after eating there last night we will never be coming back. The place was packed as we have seen in the past and we ordered two pizzas one spicy sausage and one prosciutto arugula. We were told that it would be about a 45 minute wait. We found a seat upstairs and waited. The tables were all dirty and the customers coming in had to clean their own tables, we asked an employee to clean ours because we didn't want to touch the dirty rag they were using. So after about 45 minutes goes by they end up bringing us the spicy sausage pizza and since they didn't take our table number away we figured they would shortly return with the other pizza. My mother n law was with us and she doesn't eat spicy food so we felt bad that she was sitting there with no food. So after another 15 minutes go by we checked on our order and they said it was being cooked. Another 15 minutes go by and people sitting around us are coming and going after eating their Mexican food, but once they came up and delivered a pizza to a couple that had sat down long after us is when we realized we weren't going to get our other pizza and we were pretty frustrated at this point. The person that my fiancé talked to about not receiving the pizza got very rude when he confronted him about not receiving the other pizza, he questioned him like he was lying and argued about the customers getting pizza before us were there before we were which was certainly not true. No apology or anything... So he rudely grabbed our receipt out of my fiancé's hand and processed a refund for the pizza. He slammed the register closed and it slid forward almost hitting a customer standing at the counter. Unfortunately we didn't get our $10 tip back that they clearly didn't deserve. All I can say is WOW. This long hair kid stated he has been there for nine years. What a disgrace he is to this restaurant. We even witnessed him being rude to the other staff that were working there. I'm assuming he is the manager. After reading an owners comment on another customers review from a month ago looks like they expect more from their employee then this. And now that I made this review I'm hoping they will have a talk with this employee so other customers don't get the same treatment. By the way the pizza we received was really good. read more

Normally I would give it four stars, but have visited twice recently and been disappointed to see that they are not following the Covid safety protocols. None of the people preparing food were wearing face masks on July 2. We were disappointed to see they weren't in May, but it wasn't law at that point. Now it is law and makes me suspect of their safety practices in general. We will not return unless we learn that they have started following the law and caring for the safety of their customers. read more

I would say this place fit for what we needed that evening. We were tired and perhaps a bit tipsy (or more) from wine tasting. We needed something quick and easy. That's exactly what this is! We got the fish and chips, one fish taco to share and a cheeseburger. Props to them having my favorite cider too! Fries were salty and not too thick. Enjoyed them a lot. Fish taco is supposedly famous here. I thought it was just ok. I should have added some salsa to make it less bland. The cheeseburger was exactly what you would expect from a fast food type joint. I liked the bun and thought it was a decent burger. Nothing to write home about however. The fish and chips were lackluster but my boyfriend still ate them all. Grounds next door, a full-service restaurant, was not open for another hour . Firewood has open seating. A little bit of outdoor seating on the sidewalk. they have a mezzanine as well. You order at the register and they will give you a number. Food will be brought to your table. Condiments are self-serve. Pizzas usually take 10-15 minutes as they are baked to order. *Margherita Pizza ($11) is good with plenty of basil and cheese. Crust is not thin and served piper hot fresh out of the stone oven. Looks like you can't go wrong getting pizza here. *Fish Taco Meal ($5.95) is not only tasty but a great deal! In San Francisco I would have to pay at least double for this. Two fish tacos with fried cod and salsa, along with delicious tangy crema and lots of cilantro. Served with rice and black beans. It's a good place to stop by and have a quick meal after walking around the chic and charming town of Murphys. Don't let the ambiance fool you. My boyfriend and I were walking down the main street and could not resist the ax handled door and decided to have a pizza at Firewood. Immediately as I noticed that they also served Mexican food I knew something was not right. A pizza place should not serve Mexican food, just like a Taqueria should not serve spaghetti. Anyway, we ordered the Margherita Pizza and what we got was definitely not a Margherita. There were no tomatoes or basil leaves. It was a super small, super thin, skimpy cheesed piece of bread. Probably, one of the worst pizzas I have ever had. Maybe, just that pizza was bad or it was a bad day for the cooks. But, we will never be going back there again! read more

Used another phone to call while I remained on hold, and told them I think you may have forgotten about me. I have been on hold for more than five minutes. We've had a consistent pattern when going to play in the snow, but we decided to break with tradition and used Yelp to find a new eating adventure in historic Murphys. Firewood was cosy warm and smelled delicious as we stepped out of the cold winter night. The set up is basic - you stand in line to place your order. The menu is unfettered: about 6-8 various pizzas which you can customize if you ask nicely, burgers, burritos/nachos, chicken tenders, fried sides like french fries or onion rings and either a Cesar salad or green salad with two choices of dressing - ranch or oil/vinegar. They are a Coca Cola establishment. I usually point this out because I happen to be a Pepsi girl and I like to let other Pepsi-philes know. I also like a soda with pizza or a burger and prefer Pepsi, but Barqs root beer does in a pinch. For you beer fans I noticed they had Racer 5 on tap (my hubby's favorite so he was on cloud 9) and they had Snowshoe Brewerys Snowweizen (which I almost opted for and is usually our stop on the way home). The salad was okay - mixed greens which was a bonus - not iceberg. The oil and vinaigrette was basic, but tasty. I had the Green & White pizza with added mushrooms and sans lemon. The flavor was delicious, but the crust could have been crisper. I'm not sure if the garlic sauce made it soggy or that it could have used extra time on the grill, but that is my only criticism. I like a thin crusted pizza to be crisp. The service was friendly and the place was packed. You must have an order number to take a seat which is a fair way to organize because it's nice to have a table when your food is imminent. Our food came out pretty quickly considering we ordered two pizzas and our daughter had chicken tenders. I also appreciated them bringing our salads out well in advance of our pizzas. Big pet peeve of mine is ordering a salad or starter and having it arrive just before or with our food so Firewood gets an A+ there! We have stopped at Firewood several times within the last 7 years. It's always been a good fit for the combined group whenever we return from Arnold. Stayed at a nearby hotel for a baseball tournament, specifically so we'd know a place to eat. Unfortunately, we received sub par food and when we told the staff we didn't care for it, we were mocked for saying anything. Incidentally, I was the only person of "color" there and while everyone else at my table was served, I was made to wait so long for my order that the people I was with had already finished their food and my order STILL was not done. My friend approached the front counter with my receipt to ask where my food was, then I waited another 5-10 minutes before finally canceling my order and asking for my money back. A lady behind the counter in a short-sleeved black t-shirt, who I can only assume was one of the managers, was rude and very short with me when I canceled it. She then threw my order on a counter behind the front counter and barked some orders at the lady at the register to just give me my money back so we could leave. Crazy busy place.  Was here at 2pm and the line was out the door.  only one cashier.  Great tasting food.  The staff is friendly and helpful.  Been many times and service has been mixed.  There are a lot of people working, but something is broken in how food is served.  Pizzas should never take longer than Nachos on the same order - nachos lagged by 15 minutes.  At least the nachos were crispy and fresh. Great place for kids. Tip: Groups of 4 or more can be a challenge to sit together.  Tip: Upstairs often has few people because patrons don't check for seating. Stopped buy here on our way back from Alpine Lake. Located in Murphy, Ca. On Main Street. Old street world charm and lots of wine tasting on this strip. Nice clean restaurant, and a very friendly staff. Pricing on meals are very reasonable and it won't break the bank. We ordered a 3 cheese burgers meals, and a wood fired pizza. Yes they have a wood fired pizza oven!!!!! Let's talk about the food. The cheese burgers were great!! The buns on these burgers was extraordinary, so soft and sweet. I should've asked the waiter where they got them from. The wood fired pizza was fantastic!! The crust was delicious as any wood fired pizza should be. We had the Prosciutto & Arugala pizza , which was $15.. It was the highest price pizza on the menu. Everything else was cheaper, around $12. All pizza are one size, I believe around 14 inches. I want to give 5 stars for the delicious pizza!. It is wood fired, with a nice thin, crispy crust (but not too crispy). The margherita was great. I could have eaten the whole thing by myself. The setup is casual, order at the counter & grab your own utensils, napkins etc. There is a nice little salsa bar & several kinds of hot sauce. The menu is diverse- Mexican choices like tacos, burritos, nachos, also salads, burgers & fries, and of course, pizza! It's like all of the best comfort foods in one place, so great for kids. The not so good: Pizza is only 12", so it's not really enough for 2. Either get your own, or add another item (tacos, maybe?) for 2 hungry people. We went with salad, but the Caesar salad was just so-so. Overdressed, and the croutons were sparse & mostly burned. The flavor was just blah. Here's the Scoop: Rainy day here in Cali but that didn't stop no show. So my honey and I decided to go out for lunch at one of the restaurants that the resort has been raving about. Amid the winds and pouring rain we arrived at the Firewood. A two floor establishment that seats about 50 people comfortably. Large screen TVs flank the wall, wooden tables in group settings of 2, 4, and 6. The menu is across the front wall over the register. Friendly staff at the register and delivering your meal. Numbers are given to you, you choose your seat and your meal is brought to your table. The ambiance is comfortable, low lighting, large windows. We ordered the fish tacos, pink beans and rice, bacon, mushroom and Swiss cheese burger with Lettuce & tomato. The tacos were light and the burger flame broiled and juicy. The beans and rice tasty. Lettuce and tomatoes fresh. My, my, my This was a great rainy day lunch. This place definitely held up to its reputation and we will return again before we leave California. The brew on point! Two entrees and two drinks (one was Indigeny) cost less than $20! This was in Murphys?!? It sure was! I tried the fish tacos and they were life changing. I didn't know that food could taste that good. The batter was appropriately thick and the fish was fantastic. Couple that with shredded cabbage, parsley, and freshly squeezed lime and you have a flavor with irreducible complexity. The meal came with rice and beans and I left full!
