We have been coming here for YEARS! It is always a fun and lively spot to hang out. Kurt and Kenny in the bar area are the best...very attentive and pour a great drink. Kenny makes the best Ramos Fizz (blends it so no ice chunks) Kurt's Mai Tai is also very good. This place is exactly what you would expect for a Historic Hotel that has not been remodelled, although it could use it...we just appreciate it for its charm. Food is solid both in the restaurant and bar area (separate menus) They do a great breakfast and during the week it is cheaper for my favoriite...sausage and eggs. We went there for Dia De Los Muertos and I have to say what a disappointment. The lead bartender that has a bald head was very unprofessional. He cussed at the guests for turning the jukebox volume up a bit. He said there are hotel guests that paid for their room upstairs. First of all anyone who stays there on a busy night like that knows what they are getting themselves into. We are paying guests as well. Second the guests screaming for the game on were 10x louder then the music. We met some guests that were staying there and they were in a group text involving his comments about a certain ethnic group not leaving tips. I'm like ok. Food was good, nothing to write home about but wasn't bad either. The pulled pork wasn't a typical bbq pulled pork but more of a light buffalo sauce flavor. Fries were really good, could tell they were made fresh. The food was delicious and our waitress was so attentive and gave out some great recommendations. Parking is on street and they do have a parking area for hotel guest. I got the Portabella sandwich with french fries with roasted red peppers and my husband got the California Grill chicken club sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes and large slices of avocados. We also got a Apricot beer, Snoweizen and a Firestone Mine Haze IPA. The Murphy's Hotel Saloon was a very nice place to kick back and enjoy a afternoon on the patio. Super Excellent in every way. We went to the bar and had a beer and went back later for drinks and dinner at the bar. Romeo the bartender is a pro. Terrific atmosphere and service. The food and drinks were excellent as well. The setting is real, with the authentic bar from the 1800s. Could not have wished for a better experience which welcomed us to Murphys and made our trip to see the Big Trees really memorable. Will travel this way again. read more

First time visiting Murphys and stopped for lunch here. Cute little haunted historic hotel. Apparently this hotel has hosted the likes of JP Morgan, S Crocker and more. Their names are on the front door of the room they stayed in. Eleanor is the ghost. Her husband was a miner that died in the mines and she died in the hotel waiting for him. Lunch was tasty and especially the bread pudding which I hate to limit myself. Lumpia was a surprise to see on their menu but were crisp and filled with ground chicken and some veggies. read more

We were in Murphy's for the Irish Day Celebration weekend. Had an amazing dinner at the Murphy's Hotel, Saloon, and Restaurant. Great service from Jamison and Robert. Great atmosphere, very historic, clean, and elegant in the dining room. We had a party of 6, the filet, pasta dishes, and fried chicken were amazing. I recommend making a reservation. We also enjoyed the saloon several times during our trip. Very festive and out going atmosphere in the saloon. The bartenders were friendly and had a great sense of humor. Please do not go here. They are homophobes the bar tender stated "please do not say anything to the locals, they will kill you". I said I do not care . They tried to scare me because I came with my gay best friend. It's 2025 and we didn't do a thing but dance with each other. Do not, I repeat do not support this place. We were in town, specifically looking to watch the 49ers game, and Murphys Hotel Saloon was recommended as the locals place to enjoy the football playoff game. Sure enough, there were at least four big screens with the game playing, and lots of locals rooting for their teams. It was a lively, rowdy crowd and the bar offered a wide variety of spirits options and beer on tap. A dive bar at its finest! read more

I was visiting Murphys with my family and we wanted to have a beer after dinner. We walked into the Saloon and the bartender rudely said he called last call. He sold us a shot of whiskey but said he couldn't give us anything else. Then we watched him pour full draft beers for the others at the bar. Clearly, he would only serve locals. I'm letting all visitors know so they can avoid this bar. We went to Murphys Irish Bar instead and they were welcoming and nice. I will never step foot in the Hotel Saloon again. read more

Paddy behind the bar was legend. He's young with a bright future, regardless if he decides to stay behind the bar or not. We made monkeys of ourselves on a random Tuesday night, and the lad not only didn't say a word, he kept the bar open way after closing hours as we carried on. The bartender had his hands full, worked the tables and bar, so service was a little slow, but the food was very good and the bar is really cool and cozy in a historic hotel. Fabulous lunch at the bar! We were in town to do some wine tasting and stopped for lunch and drinks. So much history here which is so interesting. The bartender was awesome! Very funny and personable. Great bar menu which has something for everyone. I had the California chicken sandwich and my husband had the Reuben both of which came with fries. I've been wanting tk check out this place for a while but the service to get a table was so horrible we left. We were hoping to sit outside, the patio area was completely empty only one table occupied. We asked the host to seat us at a table with sun and her response to us was that the table has only 3 seats but we are 4 people. I asked her to pull up another chair then. We watched her give attitude and what seemed like talk sh** to her coworker so that's when we left. We've been drinking at Murphys Hotel for 25 years or so, but finally tried the food a month ago. We both ordered the Famous fried chicken. Now the best fried chicken we ever ate was cooked by a 60 year old Arky friend of ours at a campsite on the American River. Murphys Hotel's chicken is a real close second. It's 1/2 of a chicken - breast, thigh, drumstick, wing. And I'm not talking a Costco rotisserie size chicken, but a good sized bird. And it was so delicious I finished it off, no doggie bag. Anyway, we brought another couple with us yesterday. My wife and I both ordered the fried chicken again, (don't mess with success!) and the other couple had the prime rib and the Bison short ribs. Large servings; hot and delicious! Everyone cleaned their plate except my wife, who brought her chicken breast home. I can't vouch for the other items on the menu, but damn! That fried chicken is GOOD! One last thing, our waiter was Mike. He's excellent. Knows the menu, the history of the place, and his profession. Plus he's witty. We'll be back! read more

My sister and I were visiting murphys and decided to stop at the saloon, and boy, was that a mistake. We walked in and sat at the bar and were met with the most miserable bar tender I've ever seen. He exuded negativity. When I asked a simple question, the freckled faced bar tender had a sarcastic and just plain rude response. Me and my sister looked at each other in disbelief by the treatment we got for absolutely no reason and walked out. I would never recommend this bar, and would also maybe get rid of the poison(aka the insufferable bartender with no class. I have lived in this county for 5+ years and trying to establish my residency,and he is by far the worst bartender I have ever met. In the midst of seeing a HUGE order and observing him pour/prepare drinks, a mediocre bartender/server can handle such complements as "wow, that's a big order, you are on point!"... Where as the response I'm given from "Donovan" (after giving a compliment), "Don't talk to me, talk to someone else, don't distract me". Today was my first time there, and my review limited due to temporarily being on a mostly liquid diet, but I wanted to share. The service was on the slow side, and while my friend was able to get a second beer, and her child a soda refill, and water refills were brought, I never received a refill on my iced tea. My friend had a burger that she said was amazing! I ordered a cup of clam chowder, expecting it might be thin and few potatoes & clams (which I should be eating yet), but OMG! I always end up in this bar when I'm strolling around downtown Murphy's. It's an elongated space with a long bar and table seating along the wall. They've got TV screens everywhere, and the atmosphere is jovial. If it's too quiet in there for you, there is a brand spanking new juke box which seems to have every song and genre of music under the sun. They've got quality beers and IPA's on tap. If you want to go bourgeois in this divy looking bar, they have some wine too. Hungry? I really enjoyed my scrumptious Shrimp Louie salad. They use big prawns. None of those tiny shrimps here! They always try to accommodate and if anyone is having a special day for anything (Bday, bachelorette party etc) they always try to acknowledge. This was an unexpected highlight of our weekend getaway. We were a little confused on where to enter as we saw the bar right away (you can walk to the end of the bar and make a right or use the center front door and walk past the hotel check in to the back). We were greeted right away and were taken to a table within a couple minutes if entering (we arrived around 6 pm). It was quite busy, but Romeo and Gia were so attentive.
