Gossipy bartender... So, we love Murphy's. Came down from the cabin to watch game 7 of the Sharks series. Had to sit in the bar to watch. Not a problem. The bartender seemed ok about coming out to take out drink orders, just a bit short. Had to ask for menus. Got 1 for a table of 4. Ordered dinner and appetizer. Asked for the 2nd time to turn on the game and bartender said he'd get to it in a few. He had more gossiping to do first...He had been talking shit to the people at the table near us about some chick that was cute but she's an asshole when she drinks, but she's pregnant now... then talking to someone else about a couple of people that got 86'd but tried to come back in. Just went from group to group talking shit about the locals. No drink refills, other servers ran our food. Service not good. Not even close. But if u wanna know everyone's business and get creeped out by some of the locals this is the spot. read more

What a beautiful gem in downtown Murphys!! Amy bar that can boast about the bazar top being original from 1856 is pretty amazing!! We enjoyed a shimmery drink called Payday, at the same bar that Mark Twain and Ulysses S. Grant had drank out years ago! Great bartender, great atmosphere! read more

How about a bartender that screams at customers? How about a bar where locals stretch their feet across all the bar stools so that guests cannot sit at the bar? How about a bar where hotel guests are turned away by rude and cliquish staff because they were having a private party while on duty!!?? In my twelve years of bartending, I have never, ever, witnessed such crude and openly hostile behavior at an establishment that depends upon customer satisfaction. I pity the owner of this hotel/bar in this quaint and historic town. His bar staff clearly do not care about guest services and are driving customers away. read more

I had high hopes for an outdoor dining experience in the midst of COVID. We'd been to a couple of nearby wineries, where staff wore masks, as did patrons unless they were seated and eating or drinking. Apparently, the saloon doesn't care for such silly things during a pandemic, as not one host or server wore masks, and our server actually sort of made fun of us for doing so. In addition, everything was very slow to arrive to our table, and considering the price points, the food could've been better. I have never stayed here but the bar is a nice place to sit back and have a couple drinks. They have a decent beer as well as hard alcohol selection. You have to go upstairs to see the names of the famous people who have stayed here. You can't usually see in any of the rooms since it is still is a functioning hotel but it is a very interesting place. read more

Touring gold country, I was on a quest to find the ultimate old saloon bar. My wife and kids wanted to visit, as the place is on a list or two of being quite haunted, as well as a place known to have guests including Mark Twain, Black Bart, President Grant, and many others. I popped in to see the bar, and wasn't disappointed. It was beautiful. All the old wood and western era decor made me think it to be a cool place to hang out and have a whiskey or two. You could simply take yourself back in time in this place. I simply took a gander, and exited the hotel, thinking I shall return and sit at that bar some day. As far as we could tell, this is the best bar in Murphys. It's in the original hotel and the bar is old and got a great gold rush vibe. We came on a Sunday evening on a memorial day weekend. Good enough selection of beer - everyone up here as Sierra Nevada on tap so I'm always a happy camper. Loved the old bar and fried pickles! Bartender was fantastic - we remembered her from Chatom, and she was friendly and welcoming. A group of local men were at the bar for an after work drink and they were polite and even held the door open for me and my family- I think they work for Timber something? Reclaimed wood? If they're Your men, be proud- they were great. They had to politely decline the advances of an over enthusiastic female and represented themselves superbly. Bartender also had to defend her dress when asked why she wasn't wearing less by female patron and had a perfect response. Had happy hour cocktails and apps on a Saturday night. The drinks were perfect and the food was acceptable. The service was fantastic. Ordered flatbread (big miss), french fries, onion rings, and french onion soup. The fries at the table next to us looked much better than what was served to us, we ate them anyway. A group of us were in the habit of stopping at the Hotel for breakfast after 9:00 church. We don't do that any more. The food is good, but the service is amazingly slow. We've waited an hour from the time we ordered to when we were served. The last time we tried to go there the hostess told us that they were not going to seat anyone for half an hour, to get "caught up". We went across the street and have been doing so ever since. I've been in food service. I'm betting that in that old stone building that the kitchen is too small to let enough staff work. That's just a guess. I hope the problem isn't disinterested management, as that would be a pity. read more

Was on a girls road trip and we stopped into this fun hotel/saloon/bar after we had done some wine tasting in the cute town of Murphys. As we walked in we were greeted with a friendly face and smile, that of Kurt the bartender who was just starting his shift. He said "come on in ladies..." we sat at the bar and we enjoyed his infamous margaritas, listened to the juke box, and Kurt shared some ghost stories about the famous landmark we were sitting in. Bar is great. We really enjoy the authentic old style feel. Appetizers are good, try the onion rings and chicken wings are delicious. For lunch the fish and chips is a must. If you want to fully experience the place head over during a Raiders game. We watched the NFC Championship, we were the only people cheering for Seattle, except for the spiked headed bartender. The bar is cute and had nice music (with a juke box), but the owner/bartender is horrible. I asked for water, and he told me that I had to wait, that there were many people in front if me. After several minutes, he passed by and I asked him again. He again pushed me off and told me that others who were paying were ahead of me. Well, this didn't sit well with me, not surprisingly....who wouldn't want their patrons to be responsible after drinking all day and night (including in the Murphys Hotel bar)? Apparently not that bartender/owner. After I pointed out his negative behavior, he kicked me out! Of his bar! DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BAR! It's fun, but don't be deceived. We were in Murphys, CA for a wedding and Billy was such a great bartender and human that we didn't have the want or need to venture out to any other bars. We had at least 100 people in and out of the bar multiple days and nights in a row. First time at the Murphys Historic Hotel... Came in to have a few drinks and catch up with some friends while watching the 49er's game. The food and service were pretty good, and the bartender even made a special request coffee cocktail for all of us. The negative was a rather drunk man at the end of the bar yelling at the tv (sometimes understandable when your team is playing poorly). At one point he even stood up on the barstools and yelled! He even came around to the tables where other patrons were sitting and started making conversations with the tables about the game. He made the women at our table very uncomfortable! After all of this, we wondered why the bartender did nothing to control this man, only to find out that he was, in fact, one of the owners!! This is completely unacceptable behavior for a patron in a bar, let alone an owner! The food and the service were good enough where we would return, but because of the owner and his actions, we will not be returning to the Murphys Historic Hotel. read more
