Here's the Scoop: Rainy day here in Cali but that didn't stop no show. So my honey and I decided to go out for lunch at one of the restaurants that the resort has been raving about. Amid the winds and pouring rain we arrived at the Firewood. A two floor establishment that seats about 50 people comfortably. Large screen TVs flank the wall, wooden tables in group settings of 2, 4, and 6. The menu is across the front wall over the register. Friendly staff at the register and delivering your meal. Numbers are given to you, you choose your seat and your meal is brought to your table. The ambiance is comfortable, low lighting, large windows. We ordered the fish tacos, pink beans and rice, bacon, mushroom and Swiss cheese burger with Lettuce & tomato. The tacos were light and the burger flame broiled and juicy. The beans and rice tasty. Lettuce and tomatoes fresh. My, my, my This was a great rainy day lunch. This place definitely held up to its reputation and we will return again before we leave California. The brew on point! Firewood is quick food (not fast food, not sit down waiter food). This place is so much fun! It has great decor, great food options, great flavor, and great prices. Two entrees and two drinks (one was Indigeny) cost less than $20! This was in Murphys?!? It sure was! I tried the fish tacos and they were life changing. I didn't know that food could taste that good. The batter was appropriately thick and the fish was fantastic. Couple that with shredded cabbage, parsley, and freshly squeezed lime and you have a flavor with irreducible complexity. The meal came with rice and beans and I left full! Pizza was pretty good, but the customer service was some of the worst I've experienced. Honestly with challenges associated with Covid I've been working hard to spend money at dining establishments as well as being understanding. This place however would not be a loss if current management went under and someone else who enjoys people bought it. read more

So on our way back from Big Trees, my boyfriend and I decided to stop in Murphys for dinner. We got on Yelp & found Firewood pizza. We called in our order and within 10 minutes were already at Firewood. The service was very fast, the employees were cordial, and the restuarant had a very decorative setting. Nice lighting & sci fi paintings were really neat to look at. It was really nice too because they even had upstairs dining that overlooked the town and pretty lights and a stream outside. The only complaint i had was by the time i picked up my pizza the tomatoes made the crust kinda soggy and the sausage pizza we ordered didnt have as much toppings for the sausage. Stopped in on the way home and I was pleasantly surprised. The fish tacos had all the trimmings and there was a salsa bar so you could add more if you wanted to. The pinto beans that came with the meal were very tasty. Definitely worth checking them out read more

Tasty spot. Popped in just after a few small groups ordered, but our food still came out surprisingly quickly. The two mushrooms burgers we got were great. Large patty that was juicy to the point of being a pleasantly drippy, sloppy eat. Fries that came with it were generous. If we wanted a light meal, we could have easily split one burger and fry between the two of us. Will definitely come again. read more

Every time we roll up to Arnold for a weekend of R&R, I insist on stopping here. 'Cause their burritos are excellent, and they get 'em RIGHT. Yes, they are a little smaller than those I've gotten in various taquerias around the Bay Area, but that means I can actually finish it without passing out. Their pizzas are similarly normal sized, and extremely tasty to boot. Their burgers are moist and enjoyable, the fish tacos decent, and to top the whole thing off, they've got beer from Snowshoe on tap. There is an issue though - sit in the front half of the restaurant, and you'll spend half your time swatting away at flies. I have no idea why there are so many there as opposed to other restaurants that have outdoor seating, but just like a steering wheel strapped to my crotch, it drives me %#$@in' nuts. I mean, c'mon - I know they have a giant screen where the fire station doors used to be, but they REALLY need to do something about these things. 3.5 stars - I'll round up to four since a lot of previous reviews really seem to be overly harsh. How can you not love a place that has axes for door handles? The post-lunch group consensus: good wood-fired pizza and decent burgers, $1 extra for the sweet potato fries is totally worth it, but the fish tacos are the reason to come here. The fish was fresh and fried up nice and crispy, the tortillas were thick and soft, and the cabbage finished it all perfectly. They have a killer salsa verde you can smother them in if that's your persuasion. You can get them a la carte, or for under $7 you can get a plate of two fish tacos with excellent spanish rice and cheese covered black beans. One of the best deals in Murphys. Bonus points to Miss M for being able to explain to the matronly spanish speaking waitress that we'd all ordered fish, not chicken, even though one said chicken on the receipt. And of course bonus points to Firewood for quickly swapping out for the good stuff. Also, I love being able to refill my own soda from the fountain. read more

We are camping at Big Trees in Calaveras and have been here for two meals already. When you have four kids, you look for places that have excellent food and can keep many different appetites satisfied. The pizza, burgers, and Mexican food are all excellent. This gets our highest recommendation as a great laid-back place to take the family. read more

The boyfriend chose this place after we had gone hours without eating. We were starvin' Marvin and willing to eat cardboard by the time we got here. It didn't help that I had a little buzz going on from tasting a few wines. I was a little confused after looking at their menu. Pizza, burgers and Mexican food...which one do they do best? With a name like Firewood, I assumed it was pizza but opted for nachos anyway while my boyfriend ordered a pizza. We got the pizza first which was unusual because you would think it would take longer. I nibbled on it and maybe I was just super hungry but thought it was quite good with a perfect crust and toppings. Then my humungoid nachos came out. I could hear oohing and ahhhing from the table next to us and turned around to see a sizable platter of gooey, cheesy, meaty, sour creamy yumminess coming my way. They did not disappoint. The chicken was moist and flavorful and the cheese was VERY abundant as well as the sour cream, guac and other toppings. I wouldn't have expected them to be so good! If you are strolling through Murphy's, this place is a definite place to stop. The space itself is interesting (former firehouse, that has been creatively changed into a restaurant)- and the clientele (flies included) will keep you entertained- everyone from locals to "flatlanders" to foreigners. The food is solid- pizza, burgers and mexican food are all worth trying and having over and over again. I haven't had anything on the menu that I wouldn't try a second time and their local beers are worth a pour. read more

Bland fish tacos, bland burritos. My order of tacos was suppose to come with rice and beans and it only came with a double serving of rice. The burrito had fish in it as well and it tasted like the frozen fish sticks you get in the frozen isle at safeway. Overall, my experience was overwhelmingly bland. Always make it a point to stop into Firewood for their yummy fish tacos. Their menu offers a good selection to choose from. It's not a big restaurant, but they make great use of the space available. No masks required!!! Come on in and share your covid, spread your covid. Actually the entire town of Murphy was like that. People didn't just have masks hanging around their necks, they didn't even have a mask on them and were not required to put them on when entering a restaurant to order. No social distancing markers inside this restaurant, they allowed as many people to come inside as were there. This is why this country is suffering so badly right now. People not willing to take personal responsibility and, at the very least, be kind and protect their fellow citizens by wearing a mask and keeping distance. read more

Came in here on President's Day. It was busy, but we found a table for 8, and one of the staff helped us put chairs together, while one of us ordered at the counter. We were then ceremoniously thrown off the table by another staff member who told us we had to order first. When we protested and said one of your staff helped us get the table ready, he just said "She's new, doesn't know the rules". Ever since discovering this place a few years back, I have been coming here religiously every time I pass through Murphy's to Bear Valley. I ALWAYS get the fish tacos, and they are easily the best fish tacos I have ever had. They are fairly simple: a couple chunks of light, fried fish, a heaping amount of shredded cabbage, and a sauce spread on the tortilla that truly makes the tacos. The fish tacos are so good that I haven't tried too many things on the menu, but the supernachos are also very good, and enormous with all the toppings. A little known secret: you can go to the slightly fancier restaurant next door, Grounds, and order anything off of the Firewood menu; they'll bring it over. If I want my fix of fish tacos, but the people I'm with want something a little nicer, I'll do that. read more

The food: This place just doesn't stack up against other restaurants in Murphys. I have been here twice, the first time I got fish and chips for lunch and they were fine, nothing great, but not bad. The second time my husband and I ordered the prosciutto pizza. The pizza is below average. The dough/crust tastes cheap and is not very crispy. I absolutely love prosciutto, but somehow this pizza was just meh. There just really is no reason to go here when there are other great options within walking distance. Cleanliness: There are flies everywhere, to the point where you cannot just sit and eat without having to constantly wave your hands around to keep them off your food. Also, my husband got a fountain soda and while drinking noticed tons of aunts floating in his drink. I'm not talking one or two, it was more like 20. Just go somewhere else. read more

I drove from Sacramento to Murphy's looking for a good place for lunch. I walked by Firewood and it looked inviting. Customer service was good, I asked about the Pizza and it was recommend. I ordered the Chicken Pesto Pizza and I got a over cooked, hard crispy, poor excuse for a Pizza. I looked around and notice that others in the dining room that ordered Pizza had the same thing. Our go-to place to eat when wine tasting in Murphy's. Yes, you will most likely wait in a line to get your food, but the food is worth it. If you like fish tacos, get them.... you will not be disappointed. I also suggest the shredded beef tacos and the shredded beef nachos. Not impressed. Not one bit. Came tonight for first night and wasn't sure what to do. Walked up to the apparently "ordering station" and told her I was here for the first time and what do we do. Rudely put "you order here, we bring and we bus". I told her I bright wine from a local winery and they told me that all the restaurants don't charge corkage for local wine and she rudely snorted "HA!" And blankly stared ate. Okay. Rude lady. great looking restaurant from the outside- the kids and wife were hungry so we stopped in. What a HORRIBLE experience. I order some chips and guacamole and after 20 minutes had to get up and cancel that order. The pizza which to be the highlight tuned out to be soggy and very poor taste- -$12 for a 12" mushroom pizza. There was one young summer intern putting in the pizza. After my sisters and I got our coffee down the street, we wanted pizza. So down the road, we found this place! We walked in and waited in line for our turn. Once we ordered, we waited about 20 mins for our food. We ordered chicken pesto pizza, prosciutto and arugula pizza, and sweet potato fries. All of this came to $40. Not too bad, but the size of the pizzas were quite small. In addition to the small pizzas, they were also very dry. I wasn't a big fan of it, unfortunately. However, if I had to choose between the two pizzas, I would most likely choose the chicken pesto pizza. It was tastier and the pizza held together rather than falling apart. Would I come back? If you've not been to Murphy's you should go. It's a super cute town but they also have Firewood. Not the stuff you burn, but the place you eat. Located right downtown near tons of parking and shops is this quaint little spot complete with roll up door and axes as the door handle (duh! Firedwood). Not only is this place charming, it's good! The wait is never long. You walk up, look at the menu, order, pay and then they deliver to your table. I love this model for casual dining. On our first visit we had a mission... and that was for fish tacos. A gal over at Twisted Oak Winery told us we had to come here for the fish tacos. So boyfriend and I both had that and both loved it. On our most recent visit, I had a mushroom pizza and he had - guess... come'on... OK - FISH TACOS! Which he again loved. My pizza could have been cooked just a smidge longer. I like the crust to be crisp. But other than that, the mushrooms were so flavorful (a mix of cremini and porcini) and the cheese blend was also quite tasty. Some friends of our have a cabin up in Camp Connell so this will continue to be a regular stop for us on our trips to gold country! read more
