Horchata
Jenny C.

We were craving a sweet treat near West Loop and came to Firecakes because of the sheer volume of reviews from Yelp. It's a small walk-in and walk out shop but that's all you need (: Employees were so sweet and kind. There are some cool flavors offered, but I was expecting there to be a larger selection. We got the pistachio old fashioned, horchata and dulce de leche. Surprisingly the pistachio old fashioned donut was both of our favorites! There's not a strong pistachio flavor, but I would recommend trying it! Loved the old fashioned texture. I did not like the horchata filling so I'd pass on that. Donuts were good, but I think it's a little overhyped.

Delicious! Simple house made donuts, fresh espresso and hot chai were perfect. Firecakes offers multiple locations, with easy access throughout the city, open early and closing late, making it the perfect sweet treat all day long. The raspberry bold orange donut truly was fire, no premade compote here, fresh raspberry filling was a game changer. The cinnamon roll donut was decadent but totally worth it with all the walking you do as a tourist.

Revisited and grabbed a pistachio old fashioned donut this time. Good cakey donut, dusted in a crunchy crumb topping. Not as sweet as other donut shops.

Pistachio & churro

A tiny walk in donut shop that packs a punch with so many donut options to choose from. I ended up getting chocolate, pistachio and churro donut as well as a red velvet cookie. It was quick to order early in the morning and I took the donuts all the way back to Boston. They were still good the day after, just a little smushed frosting. The red velvet cookie was my favorite as the cream cheese filling was sweet and the cookie was soft. They also do ice cream sandwiches and coffee which makes this place have something for everyone. Overall, a nice place to pop in if you're in the area.

Iced chai latte, iced coffee and Tunisian vanilla frosted doughnut
Lauren R.

We stopped in for an iced coffee, an iced chai latte, and one of their famous doughnuts. Unfortunately, both the coffee and chai latte were extremely diluted and tasted like watered down milk with very little coffee or chai flavor. We each took two sips before bringing them back to the counter. What was disappointing was that the employee accepted them without asking if something was wrong or if there was anything they could do to make it right. We also tried the Tunisian vanilla frosted doughnut, and that was the highlight of the visit. It was light, fluffy, fresh, and had a great texture. The kind of doughnut I enjoy. Since the drinks were undrinkable, we ended up leaving and buying coffee from another café, where the beverages were significantly better. While the doughnut was good, the poor drinks and lack of customer service made this a disappointing experience overall.

So many choices!

The items here that we picked up after lunch were amazing. It was a small store for take out. We picked a horchata donut, a chocolate with white chocolate cookie, and an old fashioned donut. One man in front of us does food tours and this is his last stop of his tour, so he came to try the specialty donut, the margarita. Honestly, I wanted to try so many of the items here, but I had just eaten a heavy lunch and tried to contain my joy. My son says if we lived here, he would come daily. They also sell coffees as well which we did not get.

A couple of colleagues and I were here on business, it was my birthday, and we went out to dinner, but they were no desserts that seemed suitable to celebrate the occasion. One of the guys on the team recommended firecakes because he had been here in the past and thought they were awesome. I'm super glad that I agreed to give it a shot. It's not a sitdown place, it's a place where you grab a doughnut and go for a walk. She had just put out a tray of apple cider donuts, and chocolate frosted. I was super excited because I love a good apple cider donut, especially in the fall. Needless to say it did not disappoint and to be honest, I wish I had ordered two of them. Sadly, I'll be leaving in the morning for a flight so early I can't even get one for breakfast. I have already booked marked this location so I can return on future visits. To anyone looking for an awesome snack, breakfast, or just something awesomely delicious -- this is your place !!

Lovely people working there, kind of a small place and a bit of a line but it went by really quickly. We loved the vanilla donut with sprinkles and the cinnamon roll was very special. Great spot.

The donuts were stale. The coffee was fine. The lady that helped us was pretty darn abrupt. When we got there (during business hours right before 11am) and there was a sign that they had stepped away. Maybe this is a one man show and that's why she was so unhappy. All in all, not impressed.

Firehouse Donuts is a classic, no-frills donuts done right atmosphere. It has that old-school neighborhood feel--simple, welcoming, and focused on goodness. The donuts are fresh, soft, and perfectly sweet. You really can't go wrong with anything here. We ordered the Carrot Cake and Boston Cream, which were delicious. Service was quick and friendly. It's an easy go-to spot when you're craving a solid, satisfying donut.

These doughnuts were absolutely delicious, soft, fresh, and perfectly sweet. Every bite was light and fluffy with just the right amount of glaze. A simple treat done right and totally worth the indulgence.

Second stop on donut tour downtown Chicago. I've always been a fan of Firecakes and they are my fav around here. As the tour guide was explaining something about the history of Firecakes cooking donuts over a fire and some family picture on the wall, my mind wandered off to thinking about how awesome these donuts were going to be! Here are my thoughts about this place: 1. Prices range between $3.55-$6.45. 2. Some delicious creative donuts are offered daily. 3. Donuts taste like made with fresh ingredients.

Viona C.

Probably the only dessert I really had in Chicago, but well-worth. I came by around 7am and thought it was closed, because I didn't see anyone inside; they were actually in the back cranking out more donuts. They're open at 6:30 on most days -- great for a morning pick-me-up! The shop itself is rather small, with limited to no seating, so it's really more of a grab-and-go stop. These were one of the fluffiest donuts with unique and indulgent flavors. Most donuts ranged from $3.25-$7, depending on their ingredients and labor. I ordered four, which I'll rank in the order of preference: 1. RASPBERRY LINZER TART: Tastes exactly like a raspberry linzer cookie, but fluffier. Absolutely loved this!! 2. RASPBERRY BLOOD ORANGE JELLY: Loved the flavor of the jelly in this. It's definitely deeper in flavor compared to a normal jelly donut. Also enjoyed how I got an adequate amount of jelly in each bite. 3. BLUEBERRY CAKE: The donut itself tasted like an elevated Dunkin' Donuts blueberry -- less dense and more fluffy. The whipped frosting on top was also very light and airy. 4. PISTACHIO OLD FASHIONED: They're supposed to be famous for the pistachio donut, but I felt like the pistachio flavor wasn't prominent enough. This just tasted like a normal fritter to me. Easily some of the best donuts I've ever had. The texture and quality of ingredients are distinctive features that set these apart from regular donuts. Highly recommend!

Firecakes Donuts Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Firecakes Donuts

Is there a place to sit down inside?

There's an outside seating area but no place inside to sit

Do they make vegan donuts?

Yes, double chocolate coconut. I personally/typically stray away from coconut; however the chocolate and consistency of the dough itself is amazing. This just has the shavings on top that help balance it all out

Any vegan options?

Yes, they have a few options which are clearly labeled in the display case when available.

Do they offer any gluten free donuts?

They offer one gluten free/vegan option. Per the website, they are a rotating/seasonal option, so I'd give them a quick call and verify.

Is there still a good selection late at night?

Yeah I think so. They always got my pistachio. Shit is great!

This is my absolute most favorite bakery. So this is my ode to the bakery and Dom, who is a gem of…read morean employee there. I've been a customer of almost 10 years and have been obsessed since they first opened their doors at a different location. I literally live an hour away without traffic and even longer with traffic, but I make sure to stop by or send someone else to get it for me at least once a month or more. I love the amazing cakes that are so delicious and unique but on top of that, it is Asian owned, LGBTQ supporting, etc. A lot has changed since their little storefront with no seating. The bakery is now a full on cafe and I'm so happy to see how much they've grown and how successful they are. And while it is glorious, I will say I miss the sweet neighborhood charm and great customer service it used to have. Getting in touch with the bakery through phone or text can be tough and to be honest, sometimes one of the people working there is kind of...very mean. It had me questioning if I should keep coming back. I just love this bakery so much though and being raised by parents that had a small food business, I can't help but want to support. I had a particularly difficult last minute request for the bakery a few weeks ago and I was reminded why this place is so great. It had been YEARS since I made this specific request, which was an order for a slice of cake for every flavor and a cupcake for every flavor. This is a BIG and time consuming request, especially if it's last minute. Unfortunately I come to the city whenever the traffic isn't atrocious, so it's always last minute. Dom absolutely pulled through though. Even though there were other employees there (I saw two others but one disappeared and then another male was kind of walking around the cafe and such), Dom took this giant request and fulfilled it himself. The other gentleman (not the mean person previously mentioned) was actually who I made the request to, but he told Dom to do it. I was kind of confused why they didn't do it together but idk, maybe the other guy isn't allowed to handle food? Who knows. Regardless, this request obviously took a long time and the line was getting longer; people were getting a little restless but Dom stayed calm but was swift. I swear he was moving faster than most people in the industry could with a cake knife like that. He was not impatient or rude to me at all. He was just there to do his job as fast and well as possible. It's so rare to see that type of work ethic. He is also so obviously proud of the bakery and the food they serve which makes you feel good about being a patron there. So although I continue to have an unpleasant experience with one particular employee there, Dom keeps my love for this bakery alive. He reminds me of what this bakery was like when they first opened their doors. I hope Dom is cherished there and I bet he is considering his work ethic. I will continue to support this bakery and I recommend everyone else to support as well. It may not be that small little shop anymore but Dom is a reminder of the heart of the place.

It was such a fun experience getting to try the chef's own take on Filipino cuisine. The quality of the food really stood out. My personal favorites were the nilaga and halo halo. The kitchen area was open to where you could directly see the chefs. I usually feel chaos at times watching their every move along with them shouting over each other, but I felt a sort of calmness here. No one looked stressed or angry - just a bunch of chefs doing what they do best in a calm and quiet manner.. which I appreciated! Overall, a wonderful dining experience from start to finish. The service overall was pretty good people when you got there was helpful and allowed you to orient yourself a little bit to the restaurant. The hash brown was crisp and perfectly cooked and the sausage was flavorful, and everything was great! 4.5/5 Their latte was pretty great as well. Good flavor and good coffee taste! 4/5 Overall, I would say that this is a cute little restaurant with decent amount of seating but still very limited space it is designed to be more of a casual coffee shop however they do have a fine dining aspect in the evening that you can make reservations for. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here, however while the food was pretty good, I'm not sure if it was completely worth a 45 minute wait or not. It was good, but I don't know if it was that mind blowing to wait an hour for, if I'm just being completely honest. But I would go again to try more things

The space feels really welcoming and homey, and I loved the aesthetic. There are only 3 tables though, so seating is limited. The Banana Bread (9.9/10) was ON CLOUD 9. So moist and chocolatey, with a light chocolate cream and roasted candied pecans that had the perfect crunch. Absolutely loved this one. The Raspberry Cinnamon Roll with Espresso Cream Cheese (9/10) had a nice laminated pastry and espresso cream wasn't overly sweet. Such a good combo. The Cookies & Cream Cheesecake Danish (9/10) tasted like a chocolate fudge danish topped with cookies and cream, which I loved. It had the firmest shell of the pastries we got and that extra crunch was perfect. The Hot Dog Pastry (8.5/10) was super flaky, and I loved the crunchy pieces on top. The Guava Custard Danish (8/10) had a great guava flavor and was solid. The Breakfast Pastry (8/10) had hashbrown, ham, and cheese inside a flaky crust. It was a really good flaky breakfast sandwich and WAY better heated up. The Atomic Cake (7/10) had vanilla cake, banana, strawberry cream, cheesecake, chocolate, and a light whipped cream topping. The cake layers were moist and it wasn't overly sweet.
