I usually only write Yelp reviews for our international travel, but my wife and I have started making Fire + Wine our Friday happy hour tradition, and it's quickly become one of our favorite spots in St. Charles. The happy hour is an outstanding value, with half-price small plates and $8 glasses of wine. We've tried several items, but we keep coming back for the steak bruschetta, black pepper shrimp, and crab cake. Every one of them is consistently delicious. What really keeps us coming back, though, is the service. The bartenders make the place feel welcoming and comfortable. Lauren, Ben, and Joe have all taken great care of us and make it easy to relax after a long week. Lauren, in particular, always remembers us, is friendly, attentive, and makes everyone at the bar feel like a regular. You can tell she genuinely enjoys taking care of her guests. Fire + Wine is one of my favorite suburban Italian spots. I was extremely happy to hear a third location was opening in St Charles in a newly developed part of town. Mondays are a great day to visit as they do half off pastas all day. Additionally, they have happy hour in the bar area till 5:30 offering half price small plates and discount select wine, beer, cocktails. To start, we shared the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake which comes with a sauce and small arugula salad. As soon as the dish arrived, it was noticeably small compared to other locations. It's not typical that the specials decrease the size. The appetizer did have good flavor but also some inconsistently sized chunks of crab meat. For mains, I got my favorite: Vodka Pasta. This portion also seemed smaller and the grilled bread less buttery. The pasta tasted fresh and the same as what I've had but the sauce didn't seem to stick to the noodles. My husband got the Crab + Shrimp Angel. There was certainly more shrimp than crab on this dish. Seeing the dish, it did not look like a $36 meal with how scarce the seafood was. Overall, this may be the most beautifully designed location of theirs. This part of St Charles could thrive with Fire + Wine being introduced. It's got great promise but still has quite a few inconsistencies. Service was alright as we never got a water refill, runners seemed overworked compared to servers, and my husband's chair was bummed into quite a bit being against the bar seating. read more

My husband and I went there for my birthday. He had the pork chop, was rubbery and hard to cut. I had the vodka pasta, and I asked for non-spicy, of course it came spicy. I couldn't even eat it, they also don't have bread service. The restaurant has high ceilings and it was very loud. The dining room where we sat, looked like a cafeteria with bright lights. Ok it just opened but this isn't at Glen Ellyn's level yet. The space is impressive with a ton of outdoor seating to help for 7 months of the year. Had cocktails and ordered appetizers - Zucchini fries were very good. Mussels tasted good but several were dead in the bowl. Mentioned to the waitress to no real acknowledgment. Had mushroom ravioli and vodka pasta as main course. Both were good after the inclusion of meat but still weren't great. Service was fine and not that I needed a handout but didn't pick up on a birthday in my group and just brought the check after dinner. Fire and Wine is brand new in St. Charles. We went on a Monday (half-price pasta) and it was packed. Everything was sparkling, from the silverware to the glassware. I started with and old-fashioned and it was great, a little on the sweet side for most people, but I like it that way. I also had a glass of the cabernet with dinner that I really liked. The menu is similar to that of some of the other restaurants in the group (Ellas, Livia, Gia Mia) but a little more extensive. The by-the-glass wine list is considerably larger than many places. For our group of five, four of us chose the Lobster Fra Diavolo. It was delicious, with just the right amount of spice. One of our four noticed there was no lobster in their pasta. We mentioned it to our server and the chef personally brought four extra bowls of lobster for us (note: only one dish was missing the lobster). Multiple people came to check on us. They really handled it well. We ordered a couple desserts to share but the standout was the Butterscotch Buddino. It was like a Crème Brûlée without the crispy top. So delicious! The service was great and with our one little issue, the really went above and beyond to make sure it was right. Definitely, a great addition to St. Charles! read more

For our wedding anniversary I wanted to take my wife somewhere new, and this place fit the bill. We had reservations at 7 but purposely got there at 6:30 to have a drink at the bar and enjoy the atmosphere. There is outdoor seating and indoor seating at the bar, which makes it a nice feature this time of year. When we were ready the hostess (very friendly) sat us at our table. Twenty minutes passed. It wasn't packed. People passed our (empty) table. I collected my wife's menu and told her we could just go across the "yard" and see if Rosebud's would take us. Just then our waiter (Josh) came by, but he was working in a different section, so I don't believe this was his "miss". I told him we were about to leave. He seemed frustrated, so we just ordered some wine to start, not certain which way this would go. My wife ordered a salad a I tried the French onion soup. Both good. She had the chicken piccata and liked it. I went with the filet medallions medium with peppercorn sauce on the side. One medallion was cooked perfectly; the other medium well, but I am not super picky on temperature. The medallions were very good, as was the peppercorn sauce. Josh did bring us an order of the veal meatballs "on the house", which we felt was a good gesture. Like their sister restaurant, Gia Mia, the meatballs are excellent. Josh did spend time with us, talking about his tenure with the company. One of the managers also came over and apologized and spoke with us about the history of the restaurants. As we left the other manager thanked us for our patience. The night ended much better than it started. Some of it is growing pains, as the restaurant is still fairly new. One minor thing. We both happen to like California chardonnay. They have just two options by the bottle...$85 and $140...nothing mid-range. They do have half price wine on Wednesdays. read more

We wanted to try the new Fire & Wine in St. Charles, it was a Friday early evening, and the place was packed, even the parking lot was almost full, there are still some restaurants waiting to be opened, so I think parking will be a problem once the other restaurants are opened. The restaurant decor is nice, but it was very loud, you have to really speak up to hear each other. The service was good, we got our table real quick as we had an reservation, and the waiter was nice and attentive, that's why I gave it one more star because the food was really disappointing: my friend ordered the French Onion Soup and Mushroom Ravioli, and I had the Apple Walnut Salad and the Grouper special. My friend's Ravioli was too rich that she could only ate two, my salad was over dressed and uneven; my fish was way overcooked, it was a pity as it was a really nice piece of fish and I could tell that it would be delicious if it had been cooked properly. Overall, only the Onion Soup was OK. With their price point, I have lots of restaurants to choose from, so I don't know if I would go back. read more

My friend and I have been going to Fire + Wine consistently for their Monday night half-price pasta, usually after our Monday night golf lessons, and it has become one of our favorite traditions! The food is always delicious, but what really stands out is the amazing service and hospitality. Beautiful dining space, unfortunately there are some issues, the tables are very close together for parties of five or more, they seated a large party next to us where 10 people were crammed into a booth, there was also a party in the back taking up all the room so you couldn't even get to the bathroom, the patrons were extremely rude and acted as if they owned the whole restaurant. Now to the food: the food is in no way as good as the other establishments, same dishes, totally different flavors. My daughter ordered the spicy chicken tortellini, bland sauce, watery, and the chicken, the chicken was like eating a racquet ball, chicken should not crunch even you eat it. The rest of the meal was ok, we saw our server twice Bryan, very nice but not super attentive. I'm really disappointed in the quality, to have a disgusting meal at $25 is unacceptable. Original Glen Ellyn location has the cozy vibe and this new location has an open, airy, mainstream upscale vibe--also better for groups but still good for pairs. Went for dinner on a Wednesday night with a group, our table was ready when we arrived, which was great. However we had 24 people and only one waiter was assigned to our 2 tables. We didn't get a our drink order placed until after being there for 30 minutes. The restaurant is very loud, we had to talk loudly to even hear each other. After our food was ordered, it took an additional 40 minutes to get our food. The good news is everyone was satisfied with the food. After we were finished eating, it took an additional 15 minutes to get our check and 10 more to get the final receipt. Dinner for four on Wednesday 5/20 with reservations and seated upon arrival. They were busy. This is a new restaurant but by a familiar well-established restaurant company: BG Hospitality Group, which also manages the six Gia Mia, locations, the Livia location in Geneva, the Moto Imoto location in St. Charles and the three Ella's Italian Pub locations...but this is the first time they designed a restaurant from the ground up - and they did a wonderful job - A+ with a very classy look and layout. The food is good, but they have only been open a few days, so let them work out the kinks. The portions are fine and the service was exceptionally quick for the food and drinks but then became slow for the desert and bill. They messed up our pizza order, so they brought the correct one out quickly and a take home box for the incorrect one - very nice, appreciated and unexpected. The pasta (Rigatoni Bolognese) and fish (Blackened Whitefish) were cooked properly but the rigatoni was a little too al dente and the fish was perfect and so were the fingerling potatoes. The deserts: Butterscotch Budino and Ricotta Cheesecake . . . just say yes, you won't be disappointed. We all had fun. The atmosphere was nice. The seating was well thought out, and the noise level was just right for a restaurant of that size and pricing is very reasonable. They will get better and stronger with each passing week that goes by, is worthy of a "highly recommended" . . . and a welcome addition to the East side of town. read more
