I haven't been here in a few years. I wasnt a big fan of their noodle dishes. Before today's experience i would say the noodle dishes were similar to the pre-made stir fry bags you find in the frozen section at the grocery store. So what brought me back you ask? I was craving the crab rangoons and their coconut soup. Crab Rangoons - Out of all the crab Rangoons that I've tried I have to say Fire Bowl's is the best - always perfectly fried and the cheese crab filling a perfect mix. Other restaurants I've tried them at, the filling just isn't the same. Thai Tom Kah Noodle Soup - I've had this before and every time I've ordered it I do shrimp style. I was surprised at the amount of soup served - the bowl was huge. The soup was just as I remembered. Compared to coconut soups at thai restaurants I think they do a pretty good version. I was also surprised at the good amount of shrimp it came with. Stir Fry - Beef/spring veggie/thai pepper/chow fun noodle. My fiance's choice but I had to try. I definitely was surprised. Manager who is the man with grey hair was a total ass. They made my food with so much sauce it was not edible. It was puddled in the bottom. I asked if they could just add some noodles to help with all the sauce and he told me no. He said I can remake it for you but you'll have to wait 30 minutes because they have others waiting for food. I asked if there was any way he could make it sooner because everyone I was with was already halfway done with their food and he said no. Ridiculous that he wouldn't put a bad order above the orders. This place just really doesn't taste very good. I would go to Pei Wei or Poke Austin. The red Thai curry is not the typical red thai curry you're going to get at a Thai restaurant. It tastes like they just took it out of a can and it's not mixed very well. Also tried the spicy curry and a coconut curry. Also pretty gross. Same deal it tastes like they just took it out of a can and mixed it together for about 30 seconds. There's many other options that are a lot better. read more

I've been eating at Fire Bowl for quite a while. Set up as a fast food sort of place, you place your order and they bring it out to you. They have some nice "pick-your-own" stir-frys as well as other dishes. Their Pad-Thai is good as is their Sesame Chicken. Consistent middle-of-the-road food, but worth a visit. read more

I'm actually impressed at how much u liked this place. I tried two soups bc they're cheap and I'm a hot and sour soup fiend and it was really good!! Maybe my second favorite in South Austin. If it was slightly more sour it would be absolutely perfect. They added tons of extra green onions as I requested and I loved that. Also their coconut soup, basically a tom kha was delicious also. Not a favorite but very good. Great eggrolls but those are hard to mess up. I did do the build your own stir fry and it was really good but I don't think I chose the right sauce for what I wanted. But that's on me, not them. I thought it was odd that one of the veggie mixes had snap peas instead of snow peas. Asian fast food along the lines of a "Pei Wei" style in that you can tailor your meal with type of noodles, protein and veggies. Generous portions, and about $11 with a fountain drink. I have been going to Firebowl for years and this is the first time it has been bad, and it was very bad. Forget the bowl, the food was served in to go containers and all the spoons and forks were plastic to go as well. (I have been getting to go for the past couple of years, so not sure when they changed for dine in). We had definitely ordered in, and all the other tables were given just to go containers. The chicken fried rice was terrible, with hard dry strings of "chicken" and fried rice which seemed to have been ground up. The other meals were similarly unappetizing (my friend could not identify what kind of meat he had, though he had ordered beef). And because everything is to go, we were expected to bus our own tables. Very disappointed. Not going there again. read more

Must be new ownership since we have been. They were not friendly and rude when I pointed out that I thought I had been given brown rice and not fried rice. If I could leave zero stars, I would. One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. The person at the front register who took the order just stared at me when me and my 5 kids walked up. He didn't say a word, and looked like he hated his job. The entire ordering experience was brutal.. zero kindness, zero attention, and an overall attitude that was uninterested in customers. When communicating with my teenagers, he didn't explain anything and seemed truly put off that we were ordering. Simple job training on how to be courteous and kind would go a long way. The taste of the food is irrelevant at this point, because if you can't treat customers with a welcoming experience, it doesn't matter how good the food is. We will not be back. read more

I was in desperate need for a quick snack and after leaving my favorite refreshment stand, Total Wine, I spotted the Fire Bowl Café and thought I'd give it a try. I must say that I was quite impressed. I ordered the Beef Fire Noodles, chow fun, green onions, green and red bell peppers, mushrooms, snap peas, Thai basil and cilantro. It was delicious! My only complaint is that it was a bit dry. I like my chow fun a bit on the wet side, a flavorful natural gravy to swirl the beef and vegetables in. Here is how this place works... - You walk up to counter or wait in line to make your order - Look at the menu at the counter - Make your order - pick your main ingredient for your bowl - pick your veggie mix (spring mix or Thai mix) for your bowl - Choose your sauce for your bowl - Choose your rice or noodles for your bowl - decide if you want anything else from the menu - pay and they give you a number and deliver to your table Now they have some bowls you can order from the menu if you do not want to do the your way thing. We did order an appetizer on our visit and got the potstickers. They were ok, but nothing really stand out about them. I got the red Thai curry sauce with chicken, Thai veggie mix and fat noodles. I had never had the fat noodles. They were ... well fat i guess. My dish was overall spicy. I wish there had been a bit more sauce in it. My husband enjoyed his bowl and he got the peanut sauce with beef and the fat noodles. The bill for 2 bowls, an appetizer and 2 drinks was under $30. That is not bad at all. Father forgive me for I have sinned. It's has been six months since my last Firebowl. Last night, somewhere between the twin towers of excitement that are Dollar Tree and Walgreens, I gave in to the urge to Firebowl. More specifically, the General Tso's craving struck. It was almost eclipsed by the Kung Pao dynasty, but the General won, albeit to go. My order was taken promptly, and there were no complaints when I chose to switch rice types right as "Total" was hit on the register. I was even offered a water cup while I waited for the order. I barely had time to get the water, get some Chili sauce in a cup and sit down before my name was being called. It was truly 5 minutes or less. When I got home, I was pleased to find that inside the nice two-piece plastic box was a terrific presentation of the General. Not thrown together in the usual fashion of most Asian food to go, but properly presented atop the rice; so nicely done, I had to show a family member. And, delicious as always with quality ingredients. Firebowl, you really deserve five stars for last night, but I have to preserve my integrity as an Elite reviewer. Or not. read more

We were drawn in by the name. My friend likes her food spicy. The variety is great. We were tempted by the lunch special - choice of 5 entree options, rice, and an appetizer for $7.50. But we opted for the custom stir fry. I had beef, chow fun, Thai veggie mix and Szechwan garlic sauce. It was super yummy. Big portions and very filling. My friend had fried tofu, spring mix, thin noodles with the Thai red curry. She was delighted. They have all the mix-ins to spice things up (if needed). The staff was really helpful and very nice. Love this place! This is my go-to for Asian style in South Austin, where authentic Asian restaurants are far and few between. I like the fresh ingredients, familiar sauces, and friendly customer service. I also like the "Stir Fry Your Way" options, so I can get what I want, similar to the way most burrito-style restaurants are doing it today. Not super spicy but solid entry and at less than $3 for a "cup" - you can't go wrong. I think the bowl is less than $6 and definitely would be a meal for most! Then made my own bowl. You choose the meat, sauce, veggie and rice/noodle. I didn't do the math but I am guessing hundreds if not thousands of combinations. Serving size is huge for the price. Most people were taking half of their dish home. Conveniently they have to go containers sitting right out for you. Very nice. Will definitely be back.
