After getting educated that this Fin and Tonic is a Tapestry meaning they mainly concentrate on drinks and provide food in small portions. I can say the food we had was exceptional and seasoned well. We had a party of three and each ordered two meals to accommodate our appetites. The flounder topped with crab meat(x2), she crab soup, coconut calamari, firecracker shrimp, scallops and wagyu beef. I also tried the tuna tartare which tasted good I'm just not a big raw fish eater. However, my wife thoroughly enjoyed it. If you would like a large plate I recommend checking out Fin Seafood in Newport News or Steak and Tonic in Newport News. read more

Our appetizers came out quickly as well as a bottle of wine and a few mixed drinks. Our entrees came out just a perfect amount of time after the appetizers were done and wasn't right on top of each other. Again the Service was impeccable. My exciting adventure to Fin & Tonic! Considering this place is no where near me, bf and I took a trip out to Suffolk to enjoy their hidden Speakeasy. The ambiance is completely different than the rest of the restaurant. When you first walk in, you're greeted by the hostess. I loved that they knew us by name from our reservation. She guided us in through a hidden door and sat us down to our table. They have a cocktail menu specific to their speakeasy. I have to say they look so much more enticing than the other regular cocktail menu. We ordered the cocktails Margarita and Alotta Colada. We tried their calamari, tuna tartare, crab cake and I believe, prime rib and crab. For the dessert, we had their beignets. Best things we got was the drinks, the tuna tartare and the rib&crab. The tuna tartare was the best! The mix of flavors and texture made it phenomenal. The ice cream topped on there had a nice kick to it which was so surprising. The least favorite was the calamari and the beignets. The calamari was underwhelming even with the curry Mayo for dipping. The beignets were not the regular kinds you think of when you're in New Orleans. This felt more like phyllo dough pastry cooked, still coated in the frying oils and was a bit greasy because of it. Made reservations for my husband's birthday in the speakeasy. Wow, is all I can say. We were led into a side room. The bar was amazing, and they offered upscale flights of bourbon and tequila, which we tried and loved. Besides my dish being overly salted, everything we ordered was delicious. I went for my friends birthday party and thought I was in the wrong place. I asked the hostess about the party I was looking for and she said she'd find out then never came back. I waited around 10 minutes until I saw someone come out of the speak easy entrance and realized they were probably in there. The drinks were ok, the waitstaff was nice, the ambience was great! I got the charcuterie board which was $22. It had 3 cheese, including an inedible Head cheese, 3 house-made pickle chips, a pile of toasted crackers and 4 cherry tomatoes. I was very disappointed. My bill was $70 for 2 drinks and an appetizer I would go again with my husband for the ambience but wouldn't order any cocktails. read more

Hubby and I have been wanting to try this place for a while since moving to the area over a year ago. We decided this was the place to celebrate a late Valentine's dinner. Firstly, the name should have been a giveaway but neither of us expected it to be a seafood restaurant. We aren't huge seafood lovers but we sat at the bar and figured we'd at least get an appetizer and drinks. We started off with the Firecracker Shrimp and boy were we impressed! I'm definitely not a shrimp person but these were prepared so well I wasn't turned off from the little crustaceans like I usually am. Because the shrimp was better than we expected we decided to go for some entrees. I got the crab cake and my hubby got the salmon. Again, we were both pleasantly surprised when our main courses arrived. Hubby's salmon was presented under a smoke dome which when lifted provided the best smelling hickory smoke I've ever smelled. My crab cake was all meat with no filler breading like you see at most places and was absolutely delicious. We were both trying each other's meal and couldn't get over how nice of a surprise Fin & Tonic turned out to be. There's also a hidden speak easy bar next to the main bar which doesn't require any special codes or knocks to gain entry into. You just have to ask to sit there if you're a walk in or make reservations if you want to go on busier nights (weekends). We didn't sit in there this time but we definitely will the next time we come back. I noticed some Yelp reviews felt the pricing was a bit steep but I'd argue that the price was right considering how well prepared the food was. Again, we are not seafood people so the fact that we both cleared our plates and found the meals to be absolutely delicious, makes the price worth it. The bill was a bit confusing at first. They give you a cash price and a credit card price. But the difference was only $4. Also, gratuity was already included which was a bit odd since it was just the two of us, but honestly our bartender was amazing and we would have left the same tip amount anyway. It's definitely a special occasion location because of the price and atmosphere but we will definitely be back and will definitely be recommending this place to friends and family! read more

Loved the overall experience from Fin and Tonic. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The inside of the restaurant was very clean and had a great atmosphere. We were there when the live band was playing inside and it was played at a decent level. I was still able to have a conversation without yelling across the table. Now to the food. I've been wanting to try Fin and Tonic for the longest time and was actually surprised by the taco Tuesday deal. The price for these tacos was not bad! I believe it's $5 for each taco and they were served a la cart. I decided to get each option they had. There was rockfish (I believe that's what it was called), kimchi pork, and the double decker. The double decker and kimchi pork tacos were by far my favorites. However, I wish they were served a little more hot. The flavors of both of these tacos were delicious and would be even better if not served lukewarm. The double decker taco was an elevated cheesy Gordita crunch taco from Taco Bell in the best way possible! (This is a compliment I swear) The kimchi pork taco was delicious and the pork was flavorful and had a nice spicy kick from the kimchi. The kimchi was a little tough to get through, so I don't know if they had a brand new batch that may have not fermented enough, but that was probably the only thing I could see that could be worked on. Lastly the rockfish taco. This was my least favorite taco. The taco was lukewarm like the others and that didn't sit right with me for a fish taco. The fish pieces were hard to get through because of the bones. (This may be a personal preference but I do not like to find bones in my fish tacos) however, the slaw was nice and crunchy and the sauce had a nice citrus taste that wasn't too overpowering. Sadly though I could only take one bite and not finish the rest of the taco. I did not get a replacement for the fish taco and that's mainly on me due to being full from the other two and honestly not wanting to cause any trouble. Overall it was a pleasant experience with great food and enjoyable atmosphere. With all that being said I do plan to visit again and try their prefix menu or their regular dinner menu. TL;DR - Fin and tonic had a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Had Taco Tuesday and enjoyed the double decker and kimchi pork tacos but not the rockfish taco due to the bones in the fish. Tacos were delicious but lukewarm but that didn't affect my time there too much. read more

The food was heavenly and the desserts were out of this world. No pictures, but the cocktails we got were some of the best there is. I heard about this place from a friend and decided to stop in for a bite and drinks. She raved about the "speakeasy room", however forgot to mention a few important details. For instance, the food is way over priced and the portion size is ridiculously small and so are the plates. Now, if your looking for a mediocre upscale restaurant, this is your place, because though the food and plate was minimal it was aesthetically pleasing. Other than that, I would NOT recommend going here if you're craving a large meal or on a budget! The things that were impressive was the speakeasy room. It is very intimate and tranquil. First time there. A family member went a few months ago and raved about the food. They ordered the soft shell crab sandwich with hand cut fries. It looked terrific. So we stop by today for lunch. First ones there at 11,30. Order the crab dip, the dip was mediocre warm needed to cooked a few minutes more to melt the cheese and the pita chips were very crisply cooked. My entree was the crab cake sandwich with fires, which I thought were going to be hand cut. Out comes the sandwich, a huge crab cake. Took a bite and the cake was mediocre warm and needed to be cooked a few more minutes. The fries were some bagged fries with a crispy coating. They were crisp on the outside and a little firm on the inside. Service was great and the inside was nice and spacious. This won't be my top list of places to eat. read more

Horrible brunch! Went for brunch on New Year's Eve. Crab cake breakfast sandwich came out cold and not much flavor. Lobster omelet was an omelette with some sautéd onions and cold bits of lobster-no cheese or other flavoring on the lobster. We ordered 2 bloody Mary's and they were awful. The color was a greenish yellow brown color. No tomato flavor at all. After 2 sips we sent them both back and were advised we had to pay for them. We asked about the flavor of the drinks and were told the chef makes his own BM mix from fresh tomatoes from a nearby farm. I don't think anyone has good local tomatoes in January. Ordered a glass of champagne and a beer in a can. Ordered coffee at the end of the meal. Also came out cold. A new cup was brought out that was hot. We were truly looking forward to going to Fin and Tonic, having never been before. It was the worst experience we have had in a long time. We won't be going back. read more

They have a good happy hour selection from seafood tacos to beef tacos. They also have a variety of drink selections as well. This has been on my radar for some time now so you can imagine my joy when my daughter planned a Saturday night dinner here. No reservations were needed. We got there about 5:15 and it was not busy at all. When the hostess asked where we prefer to sit, we asked nonchalantly for the "back room." We were lucky enough to get in and it was like walking into another realm. It was dimly lit, dark wood, and quiet. It was pretty much packed except for a table for two squeezed between others. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We were given menus. Their cocktails all looked delicious. I opted for the Whiskey sour. This was beautiful and yummy! It was topped with a bruleed almond foam and shaved almonds. Daughter chose the Speakeasy punch. It was served in the cutest smallest cup. There were so many wonderful, tantalizing items on the menu I couldn't make up my mind. Eventually, I ordered the pan-seared scallops. It was absolutely delectable. 2 beautiful scallops atop a bed of parmesan risotto, spinach, mushrooms, and a truffle demi sauce fit to drink. I just wish it came with more. Daughter decided on the duck confit dumplings with a slaw that was to die for. I loved the food here! Main impression when I walk in: Fun location- great to have indoor and outdoor seating. I have not been out in a few months. The vibe is modern and upscale (proven with great food) but the carpet / table set up looked cheaper and didn't match the vision. Hard to do now but FIN and Tonic feels like it should be overlooking water. If that's not an option it really feels like you should consider a big fish take wall. Menu: I enjoyed the menu but i was disappointed in the lack of vegetable choices. If I came with a vegetarian friend they would really struggle. I know it's not the primary offering but even for my (love seafood, try to always include veggies) there was little to balance meal. I think there is a real gap not including an option for vegetable side or vegetarian friend. Calamari with curry mayo. This was perfection. I loved how juicy they were. The flavor was perfectly matched and bursting crunchy and lightly sweet with coconut coated spears with a savory thick smooth dip. Will order again for sure! Firecracker shrimp: delicious and perfect amount of sauce. Another great mix of sweet, spice, crunch, warm, great texture balance. It would have been improved with a few bites of green vegetable. Duck; Not my first choice but I tasted my husbands. It was moist but not too fatty. It was like an episode of hell's kitchen, they were communicating so well! The oyster trio was amazing. Only wish the oysters were a little bigger. Salad dressing was flavourful and so were the croutons. My husband had some mashed potatoes that were blue, he got upset with me because I ate most of them lol. They were DELICIOUS. Enjoyed a late lunch on Saturday. We ordered shrimp, calamari, duck confit, and scallops. The calamari's coconut panko was lightly flavored. I appreciated that because I'm not a fan of coconut, but I really loved this calamari and its tenderness. The curry mayo is the best condiment I'd never heard of and now want a bottle of. I knew the scallops would be my favorite. The bread pudding has good flavor but it's pretty firm. Like, you can pick it up and eat it. I wouldn't get it again, and that is okay. They have lots of other desserts I want to try -- carrot cake and creme brûlée, to name a couple. They also have ice cream push pops, which my server gifted to me for my birthday. It was peach cobbler. Very lightly flavored and really good with small pieces of peach mixed it. So not only is the food very good, but so is the service. read more

Really nice place on the corner of a block, with apartments/housing all surrounding it. Very nice ambience when you walk in, an open kitchen with plenty of seats. My server, Alex, was super friendly with the whole time, and knew what he was talking about off the menu. I ordered the tuna tartare and seafood quesadilla. I actually was torn between the tartare and the soup, and Alex was nice enough to give me a tiny bowl of the soup after seeing my indecision so that I could try both appetizers. The soup was rich and creamy, and I would definitely order this if I came back. The tartare was super interesting, with the fish being topped by Siracha ice cream, seaweed and wasabi chips. The flavor took some getting used to but it was enjoyable once you do. The quesadillas were nice and crunchy, and I could taste the seafood in there. Really enjoyed everything about this place, and I would definitely recommend if you're looking for seafood around in this area. read more

Went here this past weekend after another couple recommended it. The place didn't seem as fancy as we were expecting for the price of the menu, but that's okay. We had the crab dip and the coconut calamari to start, was pretty good! Our entrees included the scallops with crab on top, bison steak, and the duck confit. My husband said the bison was one of the best steaks he's ever had. I liked my duck confit a lot but the smoked Gouda Mac n cheese that came with it was just okay. My friend was kinda indifferent about her scallops. We ended the night with dessert cocktails and sweets. The espresso martinis were a little too sweet, but the chocolate martini was good. The cheesecake was also good. Can't deny that the food was good, was just expensive for the size portions and didn't feel the ambiance of the restaurant justified it. We also tried to go to the speakeasy after for one drink which we were told there was a 2 drink minimum and a 2 hour maximum, which is weird. Why couldn't we just have one drink? We just bought a bottle of wine and drinks at dinner, we didn't need to drink 2 more drinks! Oh well. Overall, I'm not sure if we'd be back. I wish I didn't have to give a negative review during the pandemic but this experience was truly bad and I don't know how to sugar coat that. I went with a group of friends for Sunday brunch. There were eight of us celebrating being fully vaccinated and for most of us the first time we had been inside a restaurant in over a year. We selected Fin & Tonic carefully and enthusiastically. Unfortunately, the experience was difficult right from the start. I was the first to arrive and entered the restaurant to blaring music. There was a guitarist/singer performing with the speaker turned so loud the hostess and I had to practically yell at each other when discussing the reservation. I asked if the music was going to be that loud for the duration of the brunch or was it just temporary. (I was hoping she would say it was just for that song.) However, she confirmed the loud music was for the duration. I asked to be seated as far away from the music as possible. A couple other members of our party arrived and both complained about the music and asked if the entertainer couldn't turn down the speaker. The hostess said he couldn't because management kept telling him to turn it up. The hostess lead us through the dining room to a private room in the back. As we passed through, I noticed that none of the diners were trying to talk. They were just eating with their heads down. No one looked like they were enjoying their meal. The music was even louder in the dining room than it had been at the hostess stand. As the rest of our party drifted in every single person complained about the loud music and expressed their relief at being seated in the private room. Being away from the dining room made it possible to eat, talk and even think during the two hours we were there. A couple times the server left the door open when she exited our room and the music overwhelmed us until the door was closed again. Now for the food. What a disappointment. I ordered the Crab Cake Egg Benedict. Only received one egg on one half of the biscuit instead of the customary egg on each half. The amount of hollandaise was meager which made the Benedict dry. It was especially dry since the egg was not properly cooked. The white was extremely runny and almost raw and the yolk was cooked almost hard. Exactly what I hate. The yolk was jammy not runny. Eggs for Benedicts are supposed to be poached but this egg was clearly cooked in the microwave. Microwaves cook from the inside out and that is the only way this egg could have achieved this odd state of undercooked white and over cooked yolk. The potatoes were described as Truffle Demi hashbrowns with peppers and onions. Sounds great, doesn't it? Believe me they were mediocre at best. The person next to me ask what I thought of the potatoes saying she thought they weren't very good. The person across from me ordered some kind of berry French Toast. It was served very cold on a very cold plate. She complained to the server who took it back to the kitchen. When it returned 10 minutes later the plate was warm but the French toast was still cold. She ate it anyway because the rest of us were well into our meals but vowed she would not return. Another person at the other end of the table sent back their breakfast too. I don't know what the issue was or if it was resolved to her satisfaction. My meal was $18.00 and that's more expensive than I would normally pay just for breakfast. So the whole meal was over $20. and nothing on the plate was prepared well or worth eating. I won't go back. I like loud music on Saturday night but not for breakfast on Sunday. The food is expensive and poorly prepared. The service was good and the place is attractive but that won't bring me back. It makes me sad. It's located close to my home and I was hoping to find a nearby restaurant to frequent. Not this time. read more
