My boyfriend and I had some time to kill after the girl's soccer game. I wanted a snack and he wanted coffee. I'm a huge fan of old diners and he knew of Dennis' from living in Chesapeake before. This place reminds me of the old diners back in my small town in Pennsylvania. The place is very large. This would be a great space for an event. There were the typical booths and tables. The decor was very dated but it matched the vibe of the place. The bathrooms were clean. They do have a bar and it seemed to have a variety of liquor. The salad bar is very small but you can make a great salad if you choose to. Our server was awesome and explained the menu. I ordered the chicken salad cold plate. It came with chicken salad, potato salad and coleslaw. I'm a snob when it comes to chicken and potato salad and these were some of the best I've had. She did mention that everything, mostly , is made from scratch in house. The fries were cooked perfectly. My boyfriend had the smash burger and mentioned how it had great flavor and was cooked perfectly. Honestly, I can't wait to go back and try more items. Honestly, when we drove by I thought- wow I never would have stopped here, but my dad wanted us to try them out, so we stopped, dined, and wow was I impressed. An old school family, cooked with love restaurant, we enjoyed every bite- I ordered the veal parmesan, my hubby the spaghetti al la dennis- which both came with access to the salad & soup bar. I got a massive salad topped with peaches, beets, ham, mushrooms, onions, and broccoli delicious for me and my little daughter to snack. Then I also got a hearty bowl of beef & cabbage soup, while hubby the new England clam choweder..if our meal never came and I was left to eat bowls of soup I would have dined happy. Hearty, super ingredient stuffed, delicious, melt in my mouth cabbage and beef soup. The veal parmesan plate was two meals- thick breaded veal- hearty well sauced spaghetti, pop to the homemade sauce-I am glad my Dad convinced us to visit. We go to Dennis" frequently as its very reasonably priced with generous, tasty portions. The food is mostly home made, fresh and delicious.The Breakfast specials are outstanding as are his entrees. My favorites are the Wednesday meatloaf special which includes 2 slices of meatloaf, 2 sides OR soup and salad bar for approximately $10 at the time of this review and his fabulous Moussaka for $12.45..Dennis' has an outstanding, Salad Bar with many selections usually including lettuce, fresh chunk tomatoes, onions, cottage cheese, beets, radishes, celery, 3 bean salad, olive varieties, canned peaches, sweet green peppers, delicious home made coleslaw and macaroni salad.The blue cheese and Italian dressings are excellent and my favorites. The Salad Bar is reasonably priced by itself or can be very reasonably added to a meal. . His usual home made soups include Vegetable Beef (my favorite) and Potato Soup. Some entrees come with this marvelous salad bar. Dennis' Breakfasts are very good and again very reasonable. His Specials, at the time of this review, run between $5.99 (Special A- 2 eggs, 3 hotcakes, Grits or Home fries) and $7.85.((Special 3- 1 egg any style, 3 Strips of Bacon or 2 Sausage Patties, Home Fries or Grits, Toast or Biscuit, Butter & Jelly) He has great Daily Specials including Roast Chicken, Salisbury Steak, Meatloaf, Pepper Steak, and Fried Flounder on separate week days. The pasta portions are huge, many filled with cheese and absolutely delicious. My favorite dish is Mousaka ($12.45). It's the best I've ever had anywhere to include the Norfolk Greek Fest. We enjoy going about every other week. The place is very clean, the booths benches newly reupholstered, and the wait staff is outstanding. Dennis Spaghetti & Steak House is a gem. Mom and Pop vibe, friendly staff and OMG, the food! The servings were HUGE and full of flavor for the dishes we ordered - a la Dennis: Baked Ziti and the Spaghetti. My husband and I enjoyed both dishes immensely with the freshly baked bread. The self-serve salad and soup bar were just as amazing. A wide selection of veggies to choose from and 2 different soups. Super yummy! Also, the women's restroom was clean, but it didn't have a baby's changing station. I noticed a few booster and high chairs. Shoutout to Gloria for such wonderful service, the host, and the ones who made our meals! We will certainly return again and even try out their breakfast :) Thank you so much! read more

I drive by this restaurant all the time and never went in until today. I'm glad I finally gave it a try. They have a very extensive menu - a little of everything. Our server was excellent. She was very efficient and friendly. I ordered baked ziti a La Dennis. It had meat sauce, pepperoni, meat balls, Italian sausage and all smothered in mozzarella cheese. The only thing that wasn't great for me was the Italian sausage but that was a personal preference. I like my Italian sausage to have fennel and this didn't. But, as I said, it's a personal preference. The restaurant has a salad and soup bar, it's open, bright, clean and seats a lot of people. Excellent for groups. They have a special every day and everything is reasonably priced. The serving was so large I brought 2/3 of it home. They served complementary warm Italian bread. It was all very good. My family and I just finished a great dinner here at Dennis Spaghetti. I gave them 5 stars for them being great at what they are, which is a casual, Greek/Italian old school family style restaurant, with reasonable prices. If you want table cloths, don't go here. If you want a fancy meal you can't pronounce, don't go here. If your on a date night, don't go here. This restaurant is for a good home cooked style meal that is reasonably priced and won't leave you feeling hungry when you leave, that includes a salad soup bar and unlimited freshly baked bread. It was a good experience overall. We came in an hour before it closed. It's an old school restaurant and the owner is by the entrance chatting with friends. My friend and I came in and informed to sit wherever we want. Our server was with us a minute after we were seated. She was great and make sure we were taken cared of. After we ordered our food, we went to grab salad and soup, self served. Salad bar was standard. They have Clam chowder and Beef & vegetables soups. Both were ok. Baked ziti al Dennis was good and it was a lot of food. I have to take half to go. It definitely tasted better the next day; I imagined the ziti got the time to absorb the tomato sauce. Baked cannelloni al Dennis was good. The melted layer of cheese was too much and heavy for me. I removed half of the melted cheese and finished the dish. Went to eat lunch 2 hours after church still busy but service was at a stand still. Had to wait 20 minutes for drinks another 40 minutes for lunch. Then 20 minutes to pay. All I had was soup and salad. They should have added vegetables soup. I got the bottom of the pot. All in all not bad food just really slow. read more

This is a local favorite. As previous reviewers have stated, they have a great deal of choices. We eat here occasionally, but over the years 8 to ten times. We have never been disappointed. I had to drop my wife off for a function and she suggested I go to Dennis' for lunch. Their cannelloni is to die for and they had it . The dish is baked and served piping hot. Delicious. I have been a regular at Dennis' for many years, but i think I will stay away for awhile. The food is always great, service always great, but the waitress I've had the last few times is downright surly. I wish I'd gotten her name, but the last time I was there, just a few weeks ago, I asked her if I had done something wrong to offend her. Her response was "well, I served you, didn't I?" I don't know what is going on with her, but if she doesn't like her job, please leave. I will return to Dennis', but only after she's gone. Turnover can't be too soon. Sorry, Dennis. I like you. Good ol' Yelp. Had I not done a restaurant search for places near my hotel I would have never gone here. It's located in a ordinary looking strip shopping center that thankfully was only 2/10ths of a mile from my hotel. The interior is nothing fancy. Lots of booths and tables and standard painting on the wall that looked like they may have come from one of those "starving artists" shows. I came for lunch and ordered the baked spaghetti with meatballs. This came with a trip to the salad bar, which while certainly wasn't a Golden Corral style in variety had enough choices for a nice salad. Meal was ready with minimal waiting. Surprisingly large sized order! Loved the gooey cheese that had been baked over the top of the dish. Good flavor with the meat sauce and pasta. Meal was more than I could eat at one time, so the waitress not only brought me a to go container, but took it in the kitchen and wrapped the box in plastic and then put it into a grocery bag to make it easier to transport. Nice local eatery that I shall try again next time I am in that area. read more

You know, first impressions speaks volumes about an establishment. It can set the tone for the rest of your visit and future visits. This was my first time here. I was next door having some stereo speakers installed in my car. They recommended breakfast at this place so I went. I wish I didn't. When I walked in for the first time I waited to be greeted and seated. There was a server sitting at a table near the entrance fiddling on her cell phone. She looked at me weirdly and smartly ask " Can I help you?' 'Table for one, I said. Oh just sit anywhere. That stroked me wrong, i almost walked out right there. The restaurant look like from the 1970's, I mean this place is in need of a rentavation. The furniture was old and worn, the carpet also. The salad bar refer was old I mean i did not see anything modern in this place at all. My server came and put a menu in front of me, ask what i would like to drink. i had coffee and water. She brought that back and I ordered a breakfast special. Bacon, eggs scrambled, hash brown potatoes, and pancakes. Lets just say the food was nothing to talk about. Bland at best, I didn't even finish it. Keep in mind this is a pasta and steak house. Maybe they should stick to that. Server brought me my check, I was glad cause I could not wait to get out of that place. Even with the bad food, I would have been willing to give a better review, but that initial contact - first impression ruined it for me. This is my 3rd time here since my last review and still a solid 4 star place. I'm not from the area, but it will be a routine to come here every time I'm down here. I went with the 8oz delmonico with baked potato. It was cooked medium rare. Too be honest the time before I went with the NY strip and actually liked it better. The steak this time could have used a little salt, but was still fine. My waitress was really nice and checked up on me quite a bit. They are really sweet here and make you feel welcomed. I really like their salad bar. It's simple, but has everything I need to make the salads I like. I don't know where they buy their ranch dressing, but I wish I could know the brand. The beef vegetable soup was really good. If I could have tasted it before I ordered I would have just gone with the soup and salad meal and just have two bowls with bread. I'm not a soup expert, but it seems home made, big chunks of potatoes and cabbage that are mushy like they came out of a can. Oh I forgot this was my 4th time coming back. I got the salisbury steak daily special and I loved it. They have a steady stream of older customers. I'm sure if they cared enough or wanted to use yelp Dennis spaghetti house would have a much higher rating. Your dollar goes a long way here. A-Mazing pasta and pizza! It's very rare a vegetarian would love a steakhouse, but the spaghetti side of things makes this restaurant a win for everyone. Their portions are enormous and all of the dishes are top quality and authentic but at really good prices. You would pay twice as much at fancier Italian restaurants for half of the portion. Their baked spaghetti is to die for--topped with massive amounts of provolone cheese. They have so much on the menu: eggplant parm, greek style linguine with feta and cheese pizza are my favorites. Of course, there is steak and seafood if that's your thing. For lunch, they have an impressive soup and salad bar. They also have a full breakfast menu. Dennis' is a bit out there in Chesapeake near Suffolk. If you don't live too close by, it's worth a drive. You can't beat this place! read more

I frequent Dennis' often with the family. It's a quaint little place where you can get a wide variety of food. The typical customers to expect are families and the elderly. Not the best go to for young people. Dennis himself seems to be a rather pleasant man, who always greets me when I come in and a good bye when I leave. The servers are usually very pleasant as well and you are bound to form a friendship with some of them. The food isn't bad, but it's not great either. The food's flavor is far more catered to and older demographic. Though there is a large variety of different foods to choose from. I guarantee you are bound to find at least one thing you enjoy. I personally really enjoy the Moussaka. When it comes to overall pricing I believe Dennis' prices are quite reasonable. You do get your money's worth. For instance I have gotten the spaghetti a'la Dennis on more than one occasion and can never finish it. So you never leave hungry. Overall Dennis' is not a bad little restaurant to visit. Sure they cater more to the elderly, but you are bound to find something to enjoy. It's not the hippest of places, though you are bound to have some nice quality time with family. read more

I have been waiting to review this restaurant because I have a close relationship with one of the waitresses (why I come in), but I can't say I have ever had a great experience. I don't think I've ever even had a good experience. It feels like walking into the before portion of a Restaurant Impossible episode. The owner has a table where he sits to get his work done, scattered with papers complimented by a coffee cup ring. The salad bar only has iceberg lettuce (yes, I'm a lettuce snob), the celery is sitting in a pool of water, as is the feta. It's apparent that these items are being kept fresh as they aren't consumed very quickly. The banquet room has bench seating that looks like it has been collecting crumbs for years. Also, as a new mom, not having a changing table in the bathroom really makes things more complicated when I go out (and usually makes me avoid a repeat visit). My dinner was meh - but I did give them a second star because the New England Clam Chowder was tasty. It's very easy to overheat a milk base and curdle it, which was far from true in this case. The creaminess was perfect without being too heavy and the flavor was good. I would recommend a little hot sauce, but you can enjoy it without. Apparently this restaurant was popular in its day. Unfortunately it's no longer 1990. Seriously, can we nominate them for Restaurant Impossible? I think a menu revamp, decor update and a little publicity could really help this place out. read more

I ordered a waitress recommended dish and it was subpar. That wasn't the issue. When I voiced that I didn't like the filling, the waitress told me to scrape it off and eat the rest, then walked away. When they came back, they asked if I wanted a to-go box, shocked, I politely said no thank you and asked for it to be sent back. They made a disgruntled face and took the dish. Shortly after they returned and asked me if I ate a salad which was included with the dish. I said yes, I had a small salad and they walked away. They returned shortly after with a bill for $8, charging me for the side salad that came with the meal that I did not like. I paid the bill, because I did eat a salad, but I feel I should not have been charged for a premium salad price when all I had was a few cucumbers and tomatoes. I am a food service employee myself, and I am all for food service workforce, but they could have handled the situation a little better. Maybe this is a one time experience gone bad, and if I ever eat at this establishment again and the experience is better I will update my review. read more
