Located in Biltmore Village (semi-hidden - you need to walk up stairs to find the entrance), this small, intimate restaurant was surprisingly able to accommodate a party of 9 (last minute). Our table was set upon arrival, and everyone seemed pleased with their meals. I ordered bread for the table ($2.50 each - would prefer if it was complimentary, of course) and I got mussels (listed as a starter) with a side of rapini (broccoli rabe) for my meal. The mussels were good, and it was a large portion, but I should have ordered to bolognese. Most of the main courses were small portions. The side of rapini was nothing exciting, but I wanted a vegetable. My $10 glass of rose was not the best, but I finished it. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and happily split our checks 9 ways. Each person's individual receipt came on a scrap piece of paper, which I kind of loved, as it did not fit the vibe of the restaurant at all, but I am all for reusing paper. Fig is an awesome restaurant near Biltmore Village. It is small, quaint and popular so for typical peak times, reservations would be recommended. The place is white on white decored, and has a busy, efficient but still personable staff. The menu has lots of creativity and vegan options. We shared a bowl of the mussels which were a bit too large (you know there's a threshold on mussel size where they get a little too gilly green and awkwardly more than a mouthful?). I typically look for a more delicate opponent when wrestling bi-valves! I also ordered the stuffed zucchini which was good but unworthy of cartwheels. It was a singularly lonely stuffed zucchini on a white plate. I'm not sure what you can do, but there was one taste and a zucchini is a long food. The lonely zucchini on a white plate gave it it's best, but without bread, sides, or a supporting cast of any kind, it was but a zucchini. We split a bread pudding that was the celebrity of the afternoon with wonderful textures, bright currants with chew and smooth flavors that paired exceptionally well with a coffee that was also better than expected. All in all I could have ordered better - that's on me. The party at the table next to us got the renowned Fig mac and cheese and an order of truffle oil fries - a bold pairing that should have come with a defibrillator but certainly looked amazing. I was less than impressed. I really wanted to love Fig after reading the reviews but was very disappointed in the service and felt the food was mediocre. We arrived at 1 p.m. and were seated on the patio. Our server took our drink orders quickly, but then took a while to bring waters and drinks. There was a very long wait between the drinks and having our orders taken. The food took a while, which was fine, but once served, we never saw our server again. The food was OK. I had the Ruben which was good and sister had the stuffed zucchini, which was bland. Friends had the salmon, which was good and the salmon cake sandwich. Again, it was ok, but nothing to rave about. Anniversary dinner on a Wednesday night. We had a reservation for 7pm which I suggest because it is a very small place. The weather was nice so we sat outside in the courtyard. I started with a pretty strong vodka tonic. We shared a caesar salad that was very good but small. Way too small for $9. Mains were Bolognese with Meat Sauce and a Salmon Dish. The Bolognese was amazing. One of the best pasta dishes I have ever had. The salmon my wife had was good too however it was over cooked. They informed her that it would be served mid-rare. That is a bold statement. It came out well done. But still good. She did not inform them which I would have done. The service was very slow. Only 2 servers in the whole place. Great dinner with family. In town for a wedding, we stayed at the Grand Bohemian in the Biltmore Village. While just outside the Biltmore mansion, we did not spend the bank to visit the mansion. Our only free evening was a walk within the village. For the most part, we were disappointed in the Village. For a Friday summer evening it was dead. Most shops closed early and the shops were not really unique at all. Guess we had a different idea about what the Village represented. Now -- we stumbled across Fig. And we were pleasantly surprised. Awesome! I had the grilled pork and my mom had the duck. Both were perfectly cooked and presentation was top shelf. Limited menu but that is ok when you know whatever you select is going to meet that quality. The only let down was dessert. It was good. We ordered the bread pudding and chocolate tart but when you raise expectations that much with the main entree you have to follow with something just as mind blowing and the dessert just didn't reach mind blowing. Before eating at Fig, I read several reviews that said it was the best meal people had eaten in Asheville. I was looking for a restaurant that had outdoor seating for lunch on Monday and Fig was available. It is an absolutely charming restaurant with lovely courtyard seating. All servers were wearing masks and we felt completely comfortable with their Covid protocols. We started with deviled eggs and they were good. Nothing special, but a solid starter. Our entrees were exceptional however. I had the celery & frisée salad and added salmon. My Husband had the salmon entree. My salad was just so fresh tasting. You know how a good restaurant can take something really simple and make it taste so much better than you could ever make it yourself? This salad + salmon was exactly that. In fact it was so good that I actually felt it really didn't need the Gorgonzola cream that came with it (interestingly, the cream is at the center,bottom of the salad, so you could scoop some when you wanted, but it didn't overTake the entire salad which was an unexpected,but very nice touch.) My Husband's salmon entree came with purple cabbage and red bliss potatoes and once again, super fresh and delicious salmon with simple sides, but somehow "chef-ed up". Elevated food is not something we have been able to find very often during Covid, understandably so. Fig reminded you of everything you love about a great restaurant and with a safe Covid environment, it was a real pleasure to just sit back, relax and truly enjoy a delicious meal. (P. S. Upon review of my pictures, I feel compelled to say, that we requested our salmons to be cooked well, not medium. Imagine a place where the waiter answers "yes" to the question "so, you're accommodating us, you're making a great exception, and you feel it's okay to be rude". I've experienced rude before but this guy wins the award. I walked out and unfortunately the rest of the party stayed because they hadn't seen each other in a while and it would have been impossible to find an alternate. ***SURPRISE UPDATE*** I do stand by my original review with regard to service and how incredible our meals were... However, we returned Saturday 06/16, we arrived before our guests, so we stood outside near the kitchen. That's were we were shocked and disgusted...there we saw the cook handling raw fish, then raw (what looked like) pork, and beef, bare handed, going from one to the other, without washing his hands or wearing gloves. My husband pointed out boxes of gloves right there, but he never used them. One would think if you had windows so you can see the kitchen in action, the owner/manager would insure they follow the Servsafe guidelines and show care for there clientele... I find it VERY VERY hard to believe this was the cook which had prepared the amazing meal we had last visit...We met our guests and went elsewhere and we will not back, it was repulsive! My husband and I have been to FIG on several occasions and everything was always good. This past Friday evening we returned and it was the best we had experienced at any restaurant ever. My husbands steak was cooked/seasoned perfectly. My fish was amazing, most beautiful color and cooked exactly right. The appetizer was great, desert was very nice, but the star by far was my husbands steak and my fish. Not sure what they changed, but keep it going... we decided to have our anniversary night out here with friends... thank you for a memorable evening.. Fig bistro is unassuming in an easy to pass location. What it lacks in visibility it more than makes up in flavor. The restaurant is located in the Biltmore village vicinity but off to the side and up some stairs in a building that doesn't look like it should have a cafe with a small courtyard-esque area but it does. This restaurant embodies words like intimate, European, cozy, simple, tasteful, and timeless. The flavors are perfectly balanced not too crazy but interesting enough to give it a modern feel. My party of three was particularly famished upon arriving. We started off with perfectly crispy Parmesan truffle fries they very Frenchly call pomme frites. I ordered duck soup and shared the Ruben with one of my companions. My other friend ordered the risotto minus the oyster mushrooms (horrifying I know). When our main dishes arrived we might have put in for a second order of pomme frites. Because why not? The Ruben was damn good. I would say one of the better ones I've had in town. Not overflowing with too much of everything and soggy bread. But the perfect quantity that gives enough to taste each element with crisp bread. My friends risotto had parsley oil. How awesome is that? You should say very. Because it gave the dish a vibrant green and a made it a perfectly delightful risotto despite the missing oyster mushrooms. After every last crumb was polished off the server asked if we wanted to see the desert menu. One moment of feigning fullness and we all agreed to glance at the menu. The verdict was bread pudding with a caramel sauce. The chef was kind enough to actually divide the bread pudding into thirds and plate it beautifully. I don't often comment on the service but that was really above and beyond my expectations. Ten stars for service. The bread pudding was wonderful, I'm glad I got my fair share of caramel sauce and it didn't come to fists over the last bite. All I want to say about here is wow! Every time I visit Asheville I like to eat here even if its out of my way. Which it usually is. This is located in Biltmore Park. Parking can be difficult especially during peak season, but I feel it is worth it. While it is pricey, lunch offers a smaller menu and for the quality of food it is worth it. There menu does change with the season, but there are some items they do serve all year long. The items I am about to tell you about are common in most restaurants, however Fig uses local ingredients from local farmers and makes everything to order. Macaroni and cheese is a meal all in its own and it it is heavenly. Did I mention apple wood smoked bacon also? Yes this mac and cheese has it, with a fine dining twist that wont leave you hungry. It also has a delightful arugula salad to go with it. Cesar salad with chicken breast is also delightful. The chicken is cooked perfectly and is always moist and tender. The quiche of the day with herb salad is not too filling but just enough you have no left overs. Yum! My favorite is the Salmon, and this does change often enough. There are times they do not offer this for lunch, which makes me appreciate it when it is available. The wine is also fabulous, so if you have time to relax and not rush back to work, go early, order wine and start with appetizers and plan a few hours because you wont want to leave. I recommend The Fig Bistro all the way around. Wine and food is excellent, but I need not forget the staff. Everyone there is awesome! read more

We are from out of town. We came to Asheville for the weekend celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary. We were intrigued by the name FIG which describes the restaurant so well in that "Food Is Good!" The food is excellent! We had a seasonal soup that was divine. The salads were fresh and also tasty. Our entrées were a fresh caught halibut cooked to perfection and a steak grilled perfectly. We finished our evening with a wonderful conversation with the very talented chef and shared a piece of fresh peach pie. The restaurant is quaint and intimate and the food is outstanding. After a long day of traveling, my family and I were hungry for a good meal nearby. As per usual, I turned to Yelp, and Fig was the first restaurant to pop up. I skimmed through the reviews and was sold-Fig it is! Finding this petite restaurant at night was a little hard. Look for their "Fig Bistro" sign on the side of a medium-sized building by the train tracks, and you should be able to spot the restaurant once you walk into the building a bit. We had arrived right before a rush of people with reservations, but thankfully the host was determined to accommodate us. Sure, the restaurant is small, but it was more cozy than cramped! As for food, my family ordered the daily soup (some kind of carrot spice if I remember correctly), the pommes frites, and the apple and endive salad to start-all of which were delicious! I'd like to mention that the portions here are smaller than what most Americans (myself included) would be used to, so I'm glad we ordered those appetizers. For entrees, we ordered the shrimp, pork loin, salmon, and risotto. I'm no risotto connoisseur, but I was pretty satisfied with my dish! I actually thought the portion was perfect for me. I also sampled some of the pork loin (cooked medium well) and the salmon (which is usually cooked medium well unless ordered otherwise: my brother wanted it well done) and let me tell you, I'd definitely come back for either/both of those dishes again-they were outstanding! Even cooked well done the salmon was juicy and spiced to perfection. The pork loin was also amazing, juicy and tender. The raving reviews about this place are no joke!! The food was delicious, to say the least. I'd like to dedicate the fifth star to the hosts (/servers), as they were especially attentive and considerate.
