Lomo Saltado, lomo Saltado, lomo Saltado. Dang, I thought if I said it three times, it would magically appear before me. So far, I've only had the lomo Saltado but let me say, this is a surprisingly delicious dish. The combo of steak, fries, rice, tomatoes and onions don't sound like much but it's so simple I can't overstate how deliciously good this was. The steak was tender, the fries were just the right thickness, where they don't fall apart in the sauce and the rice, with that hint of saltiness bathing in the sauce is just over the top. The only thing I hated about this dish is.... Absolutely nothing! Thank you to Fernando's and the people of Peru for creating this masterpiece of a dish. Ordered a lomo saltado, fettucini a la huancaina with meat and a papá rellena. Meat was hard, salty and that green salsa not Peruvian at all, no spice to it. The papa smelled like it was old and tasted spoiled. I'm sorry I know it's hard times but why sell food like this. Why not try harder. What happened to quality control. More and more people are ordering take out everywhere and it's like food quality has gone down tremendously. Like they make food in a bad mood and just to do a job and get it over with and get paid. Omg! The food was delicious here! We ordered the lomo saltado and the beef tallarin saltado. Both dishes, the beef was cooked perfectly and everything meshed so well together. Although I enjoyed my husband's dish l, the lomo saltado, I enjoyed my dish more. I loved how the pasta was so buttery and the noodles were cooked perfectly. If you still have bread, dip the bread into sauce (yum!). I would definitely come back here for either of the two dishes and the service was wonderful, too! This was my first time here, my friend and I basically had the whole restaurant to ourselves on a Thursday night. Our waiter was very nice and would check up on us often. We both ordered the carne lomo saltado and the meat was tender and juicy! It came with a green sauce, which was pretty good. Complimentary garlic bread is also served. Five stars for the food, the food here is amazing, super tasty and fair portions. I would not recommend dining in if you lack patience and expect great service. It can be a while at times to be seated and receive your food and the waiters and waitresses are not always the friendliest (with the exception of the cook, he is the sweetest most humble person). Fernando's I had high expectations. I usually fill up on gas right next door. I'm one of the few that try my hardest to support local businesses. Fernando's is located in a tough part of Downey. Not tough as in unsafe, but tough as in you can drive past it and never see it. Finally, I stop here. The business is definitely clean. The waitress looked depressed and unenthusiastic. It's Monday, lunch hour. At minimum, put on a smile. I ordered a Peruvian beer. I battled with myself and opted not to order the empanada. I did order the arroz con pollo. Prior to getting my meal the waitress brought me some bread. I appreciate the gesture but the bread looked sad. My meal was a shame. I'll post a picture later. I get a chicken leg that I described on my twitter page as the size of a hummingbird. I'm not even exaggerating. It was probably a newly hatched chick's leg. It was a joke. I could have complained, but I really didn't want to cause a scene in there. The rice was good. Throughout my meal my waitress didn't bother once to ask me how I was doing. I was a huge, what you call huge fan of this place. I lovED that their portions were a good size, and that their meat was always so nice and juicy and extremely tender. Their dishes always had the right spices... long story short, the place was delicious. Well, now their seafood is not the same. The fish tastes a bit rubbery (not fresh). Their lomo lacks that juicy tenderness. Their rice seems like it's a day old and the potatoes on the lomo are not crispy like they use to be. I didn't mind that their prices were a little bit on the expensive side because their food was worth it, now I'll think twice before coming. They have a huge banner in front of the restaurant advertising "LUNCH SPECIALS $6.99!" I come in, say hello with a smile to the waitress & she gives me a blank look & points to a table. I sit & she gives us dinner menus. I ask about the lunch specials. She says "I only have chicken fried rice." Ok...??? Maybe they should advertise that then, "chicken fried rice lunch special!" I felt that the advertisement was misleading.. I would've gone somewhere else if I would have known. She completely ignores us during our whole time there & I need to flag her down every single time. I flagged her down for bread, to order food, & for a spoon. She was not friendly at all, it seemed as if she had a problem with us (me & my mom). It was my moms first time eating Peruvian food & I wanted her to have a good experience. I can tolerate a bad waitress, but I can't tolerate bad food. Having both at the same time is quite the double whammy of wackness. The food was not good. I ordered the pesto pasta & it was extremely watery. The noodles were al dente, but the sauce completely sucked. It was flavorless, thin & watery. It was pasta in green soup with a hint of pesto flavoring. Do yourself a favor and don't order this. My mom had the seco a la nortena (beef chunk in a dark sauce w/rice & beans) she liked it but then again, she likes anything, literally. I tried some of hers & the sauce was not appetizing. It tasted sour, not in a good way. I was talking so much crap about how bad the food was & how bad the customer service was to my mom & I think the waitress overheard cuz she came over & asked "is everything ok?" with a fake smile, AFTER we were done. C'mon lady... Here's some waitressing advice 101: After the customer takes their first bite of food, you must check up on them within 2 minutes. The best part about the meal was the bread. Seriously. It's also overpriced for peruvian food. To top it off, it was hot as hell in there. Who likes to dine out in a hot stuffy restaurant? Dining out is supposed to be an experience. They need to get it together & take a customer service course. I eat peruvian food at least once a week & I live right next to this spot. What a shame, they could have had a loyal customer. Decided to give it a try after my last disappointment years ago. And yes, they did it again! The pollo saltado is not even close to what it used to be with previous owners. My pollo saltado was soo salty that I only ate it because I was starving, plus it was all floating in soy sauce that even got inside the carry out bag from picking it up to walking to car. The portion was also very small and does not compare to before. It had very few onion, tomatoes, chicken, and rice. To top it off, I was not given any bread with my order. Came here to meet a friend for after work, who swore that this place was fantastic. Yelpers seem to be divided about the place, so here's my take on the whole experience: There were two ladies serving, one of whom seemed to know what it takes to be pleasant and the other one who was just "eh, you're intruding on my time". Truth also about the tables not being cleaned up - looked like the lunch service had not been cleared by 5 pm. Server says if I wanted to sit at a table, she would have to still clear it. Eh, what? Having read through some of the reviews, I was prepared to be utterly disappointed by the food and its quality. I was neither utterly let down nor blown away: Choclo - that giant kernelled corn on the cob, served with a lot of melted but quite bland butter, and some sliced white mild cheese - a good appetizer. Lomo Saltado (we requested it divided) - on the receipt (Dividir a 2) - is a lot of rice and potatoes in proportion to the bit of grilled meat. It was just okay, and for the price, cannot complain. Tallarin Verde, or as the server corrected me - Linguine Verde - although that's not what was on the menu. Anyways... I requested this as a thicker sauce and not soupy, and she seemed to totally get it. Maybe the way this is served is usually soupy? I don't know.. It was a generous portion but also still a bit on the bland side. And off menu: Fish tacos - a good crunch on the fried fish, fresh shredded lettuce, chopped onions and tomatoes - I asked for it all to be on the side, as I was taking them home. The server again got it, and packed it as requested, fish and veggies separately. I've had better and tastier. The saving grace was the more pleasant, although slightly oblivious server. She brought us menus, & returned after a few mins to take our order. After she brought our drinks along with a basket of toasted french bread with green aji. PROS- Ceviche de pescado was flavorful Green Aji actually had a kick to it Arroz con Pollo was flavorful, chicken was fully cooked too Server was really polite Free soda refills CONS - They need to get ceiling fans or actually use the central air cause the standalone a/c or whatever it was jus circulates hot a** air, therefore making it super stuffy. Lomo saltado had oily fries, meat wasn't seasoned, basically no flavor whatsoever on this Knocked off 1 star because of the Lomo, I will come back but maybe try something else, NOT the Lomo though.
