Food - sub par Service - slow & presumptuous Ambiance - hole in the wall & not a problem I had an intense craving for lomo saltado so came here because it popped up on Yelp. It was a hole in the wall and had relatively good reviews for lomo saltado so I had my hopes up thinking the food would be amazing. My chief complaint is that it took almost 30 minutes for my single order to come out because the kitchen was busy prioritizing to-go/delivery orders. Had I known this, I wouldn't have eaten inside the restaurant; I would've actually gotten it delivered. My next complaint is that no receipt was given as customer copy, and no itemized receipt when asking for tip. The total for this dish came out to almost $30 including tip, and the waitress/cashier didn't mention the lunch special at all. I brought it up to ask about it after I paid, to which she replied, "Oh, you probably don't want that cuz it's smaller. But it comes with a drink and soup." The fact that she assumed I wouldn't want the lunch special (when I'm there at lunch time) that would've been a much better deal at $17.99 and perfect portion size for me, and yet charged me for the regular dinner price was a bit presumptuous. It's also weird that they would ask for a tip (which I gave anyway) before I even received my meal. It's less about the price but the principle! But I was just hungry and needed to go to my next appointment, so I didn't argue, but again, the food took way too long to come out so I had to ask her about it after the 25 minute mark. Food came out after 30 minutes, and I had to get up and ask for the aji verde sauce when most restaurants usually serve it to you with the meal. The aji verde sauce which is really important to me to complement this dish, unfortunately missed the mark as well. I really missed Sol Inka's aji verde sauce that's well-rounded in every way. Lomo saltado should be balanced between the meat, tomatoes, onions, and fries, but it was definitely heavy on the fries with only two pieces of tomatoes. I would've preferred more meat too if it's the regular plate, but it felt like a fries dump. I wouldn't have had complaints if this were the lunch special order. Anyways, if you don't mind the headache & having to be extra proactive to get what you want, this is the place to be, but it's definitely not my cup of tea. $30 for a sub-par lomo saltado where well over half of it is fries does not sit well with me, considering I waited 30 minutes for my meal. Unfortunately, I'd just have to stick to Sol Inka for my regular Peruvian food fix, as the flavor is more robust there anyways. Oh, and Sol Inka also gives complimentary warm bread and butter, while there isn't anything like that here. read more

Today felt like a summer day which made me want something refreshing such as a ceviche. My bf had been craving Peruvian food for a couple weeks now. We were both hungry and thought about going to our usual spots, but he suggested to try a new place. I looked it up on yelp and it looked good, it was a bit more of a drive than our usual but I was down to try a new place. We arrived there, it's a small hole in the wall that looks clean and had cute decoration with a big alpaca and photo spot. They have single stall restrooms separated by gender and no gender neutral. They have plenty of parking on the front and extra in the back. This is a family friendly restaurant and no AC. They have fans around the place but thankfully not too hot today. My first callout is that the lady was very nice, but no English. My bf doesn't speak any Spanish, but thankfully I do. If you don't speak Spanish just be prepared to point at the menu. I ordered a coke and a leche de Tigre, one of my favourites to get at Peruvian restaurants. My bf wanted the rotisserie chicken but they were all out of whole chicken so he ordered the chaufa rice with chicken and a cuzqueña beer. He also ordered a papa rellena. My ceviche and the beer came out first. The salty crunchy corn things on the side were really good, sadly the ceviche was a disappointment for me. It didn't have much fish in it, it was mostly onion and some corn. The ceviche was extremely salty tot he point that I had tot ame breaks to eat it and taste something else. It was also disappointing that it didn't taste like lime, it was made with the fake lime, the very citrusy liquid one that triggers your heartburn. I'm glad I had tums in the car since I needed them after that. My bfs chaufa came out and it was probably the best dish we had here, but not great, it was ok. It didn't have that much chicken in it and it just wasn't remarkable, it was food. The stuffed potato was the last thing to come out and it was ok too. I liked it, but wished it would've had more protein. It seemed as if the meat was mostly on one side and it had other veggies. The potato was very soft with a deep fried exterior. The onions were slightly pickled. When it was time to pay, I noticed that the check had 2 prices, one for cash and one for card. I was going to give a 3 stars but that business practice made it so I dropped another star and took it out of the tip. Overall I understand that this place might have good reviews because of the lack of other Peruvian restaurants around but I highly suggest to keep driving to Sol Inka or Cuzco they are both much better than here. read more

Tondero is the closest Peruvian spot in Pico Rivera, which is why I keep giving it a chance, but I'm always disappointed. The lomo saltado is especially frustrating. The portion of meat is extremely small. Last time I counted about 5 tiny pieces of meat, which is unacceptable for the price. My friend wanted to check out this hole in the wall Peruvian joint on a recent Sunday evening. This is a very small place with only about 5 tables. My friend and I sat literally next to the cash register. We shared the pollo saltado and the seafood mix ceviche. They are out of chicha morada that day, and also the AC was not working. We were quite warm! The chicken saltado was tasty. TBH many Peruvian places makes this dish way too salty, but here it was just right. I don't eat spicy but my friend enjoyed it with the house green sauce with this dish. The seafood mix ceviche had fish, shrimp, and calamari rings. The taste was very flavorful. The only downside is if you try to bite into the calamari ring, the rubbery part is not chewable/breakable at all. My friend and I were playing chew the "rubber band". The lady working today tried to pull a fast one on me. I went inside to place an order. I already knew what I wanted since I come here for dinner at least twice a month. However, I noticed they had a lunch special and both plates were on it (Lomo Saltado and Aji de Gallina). So, when she asked what would I like I said, "can I get the Lomo Saltado and an Aji de Gallina?" pointing at their lunch special. She then asked "would you like something to drink" and I said, "no that's fine". She then proceeded to give me the total in which I had my payment ready and gave it to her and as she swiped I asked her how much is the lunch special? Since it seemed like it was not much of a lunch special. Her reply was "It is 14.99 and it comes with a drink". I then replied, wait so it comes with a drink, I'll take the drinks then. She replied, "I thought you wanted A La Cart and charged you as so." My reply was that I thought that I was getting the lunch special and that I even pointed at the Lunch Special Menu when placing the order. She then said, " Well, it's too late I already charged you." So, I was a bit confused and ask her "so you charged me for full price on two items that are on your lunch special and then ask me if I wanted a drink." So, she probably would have charge me for the two drinks too. I then gave her a chance to make it right by just letting me have the two drinks since she had already charged me full price but to my surprise she said that the full price doesn't come with a drink. I did not say anything else but "that's fine I don't want anything, cancel my order and give me a refund." Which she did. Can't believe she tried to pull a fast one on me. So, if you go there for the Lunch Special make sure she charges you for that and not the full price. Because she tried to act like she wasn't doing anything wrong. Not good for business, she didn't even ask me if I wanted the lunch special or the regular a la cart. I guess you can't assume. It's just too bad that they lost a costumer over something like that. Tondero is an authentic, hole in the wall Peruvian spot located in Pico Rivera. Parking is easy as the restaurant is located in a strip mall. There are a few tables inside if you prefer to dine in. We came with a group of 8 and were comfortably seated. Fresh bread and butter is served immediately along with your beverage choice. They have authentic Peruvian sodas! I only got to try one dish, the lomo saltado. I can honestly say that this was the best lomo saltado I've ever had - the beef was cooked to literal perfection and better prepared than a lot of fancy BBQ or steakhouse spots. Each piece was juicy, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The white rice and thick fries soaking up the lomo saltado juices was the cherry on top. I don't even know if I can try anything else here - the lomo saltado was that good. The menu is extensive so I will 100% be back! It's hard to find a good Peruvian restaurant, all the flavors in the lomo saltado were just perfect! The aguado was huge!!! I couldn't even finish it, such a reasonable price! When you first come in, it's a tiny little restaurant, the lady that helped us out was very sweet and jolly. We were first given the little breads, super warm fresh and crispy, with the green spicy sauce that rocked my world. The plátano fritos very nice ! I will be coming here on a regular basis!
