They've redone the store not too long ago and it's definitely nicer. The entrance as well as the way you grab the pastries. There's a tray that you pull out instead of opening the case. It's a nice design. They have a few more new things to choose from as well. They have hot stuff as well which you're more likey to get fresh earlier in the day. I love how Forest Hills got a Fay Da bakery! So convenient to the train station, which is literally on the same block! This Fay Da blew my eyes away at the fact that all pastries are individually wrapped and you don't need to put them on a tray for the cashier to wrap them up like other locations! Less work for you! Just the downside is this place only accepts cash, which sucks! This place got ensaymada that is sugar coated compared to other locations that are not sugar coated. Pineapple buns are my favorite and I love how they have different pineapple buns. I just love the plain ones and always get them all the time from Fay Da. I also love the fact that this location has all the hot food like curry puffs and cha siu bao on display at around 4pm in the day. I ordered the Neapolitan Cake, which I've been wanting for a while now. While I personally can't taste different individual flavors like strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla in the cake, the cake has the perfect ratio of cake and frosting. It's subtly sweet, and the cake is spongy. There's also little shavings of chocolate around the edge of the slice, which is my favorite part. The staff at the front that rung up my boyfriend and I was nice. There's a few tables to sit at while you grab a quick bite, and the bakery gives me the same nostalgic childhood feeling of an Asian bakery. This bakery is a little larger with space for seating. I don't usually get food for myself at FD but my mom needed something quick at the time so we bought a few baos and sandwiches. The spicy chicken sandwich is really filling. For the price.. especially nowadays, everything is so expensive, the sandwiches are really affordable and will keep you full for hrs at less than $4! Though it is pretty spicy.. they should make a regular one so my mom could try it. I do not like the egg tarts at Fay Da. Doesn't have that nice yellow color, probably uses less egg yolks.. Now that the Forest Hills is primed with Chinese options, I suppose it shouldn't be a surprise to see Fay Da steps away from the heart of Continental Ave. It's not just smart being next to one of the busiest subway stations in the borough, but also perfect for being one of the only Chinese bakeries in the area. Sometimes when the BEC (#1) isn't cutting it, then the variety of Chinese pastries becomes a potentially cheaper and more sustainable early morning meal choice. I do appreciate their superb cold milk tea (凍奶茶), morning freshness pastry wise, and quality spectrum of buns and different options. It might look like a tiny store from the outside, but compared to other Fay Da locations, it's surprisingly spacious. The takeout scene is big, but there's some limited seating here as well. Service is usually rushed, despite it not feeling all that busy in here ever. There's no WiFi and like many local places in NYC, it's cash only. The prices are becoming Tous Les Jours-esque at this point. $40 for a lot of their cakes and $30 moon cakes are kind of cray with only 4 per box. The listed hours are from 7am-8:30pm, but lately has been closed by 7pm when the shelves are mostly bare. There is usually a very good selection of buns, both savory and sweet. The usual standards like roast pork, ham & egg, hot dog, pork flax, pineapple and coconut cocktail are available, as well as more uniquely different types. Try the curry beef puffs or chicken pies under the carousel heating lamps. The flaky crusts are great when they're reheated in the toaster oven also. Somehow I decided to come here today for all the usual unhealthy fare, the roast pork buns and curry puffs galore, and when I went to pay the $15 with a debit card, I first had to switch registers and the second lady rang everything up again. Initially, she wasn't firmly grasping my card when I offered it to her, and it slipped out of her hand and fell down to the counter because she wouldn't take the thing. Then when she tapped FOR me, which most places allow the customer to do for themselves, she wouldn't let go of the card when I went to take it back. For the second time, it went clattering down to the counter top. She "apologized" both times, but how genuine could your apology be when you're just deliberately being sloppy? It seems to me that they're mostly interested in cash. That's what it boils own to, but guess what? As the customer, I get to choose my method of payment, and save my 20 for when I want to use it. Lastly, they seem to only offer paper bags, which left me with two little brown paper bags-worth of piping hot buns, not convenient to have to hold in 90 degree weather as I wait 20 minutes for the bus home. Don't get me wrong, as the times change, the newer establishments are just as drool worthy and just add more competition to the playing field. Always room to grow. But I'll tell you, spending just a few bucks for a taste of my childhood, I'll buy into that any day. This location is super popular with the locals as it's steps from the subway and on the busy Queens Blvd. The space is well lit, fully stocked (I was here on a Sunday afternoon) and had ample seating. Numerous counters of cakes and breads all on display. You serve yourself by taking a round tray and tongs - one time use please. Just hand everything over to the cashier when you're done. Each row of breads can be accessed easily, lifting the cover open. There's even two rotating warming racks displaying the really good stuff that should be served warm, think curry puffs, chicken rolls, roast pork pies and other minced meat selections. I couldn't resist and bought three. As for the real reason I stopped in, egg tarts! My family and I just love those sweet, flaky crust, egg based tarts. Grabbed four to go as well. My previous review still stands and I will continue to come here when I am in the area, but I wanted to give an update on the continuing battle in this world of Good vs Evil. Today I stopped in to pick up a couple of egg tarts and a steamed pork bun (Thanks Doug W. for the inspiration) to take home. I brought my egg tarts to the counter as one of the ladies went for my steamed pork bun another rang me up. I noticed the cashier overcharged me about $1.00 (I was charged $5.40, 10/4/18 Good triumphed where I was charged the correct amount of $4.25. Moral of the story: Always ask and check your receipt!). The lady brought my bun and packed my items nicely. She began a discussion/argument in Chinese with the cashier and pointing to the cash registered. Since I don't speak Chinese I can only imagine she was actually looking out for my interests trying to persuade the cashier to correct the issue. Sadly, evil won out today. I paid the amount without argument since I probably would have left a tip of similar size anyway. My family tends to stop by early in the morning to grab breakfast as it's a great price and open much earlier than other establishments in the area. Some of my favourite things to get are the hot dog buns and the chicken puff, both items that I got this morning! The hot dog bun is a hot dog encased in a sweet fluffy bun. The juxtaposition is a perfect pick me up in the mornings and always hits the spot. The chicken puff is a savory and saucy chicken inside a flakey puff. The insides have a distinct black pepper flavor and a light brown sauce keeping the entire pastry moist. The exterior remains flakey and doesn't soak up the sauce. The food is good and prices are very reasonable and the recent renovation makes it even better visually. Unfortunately, there are a number of homeless individuals permanently sitting in the bakery taking up seats. It's kind of gross. I wish NYC is not this sad. The hot buns, especially red bean, tend to run out by the early afternoon. The golden mung bean bun is one of my favorites. It's a bit more niche compared with other popular offerings such as pork buns or egg tarts, but it has a delicious rich, sweet, yolky filling. After, I called Uber Eats Support and Spoke with an Uber Eats rep on the line for them to tell me their specialty team needs to investigate further and they would be contacting me in 6 hrs. I did NOT get a response till 5am this morning for an online rep named Esther confirming I was not eligible for a refund. I'm also a fan of their sweet butter roll buns too and they sell 6-8 pieces in the circular tin tray. Their sandwiches aren't bad either.
