When you have one person at the register and helping clients you get a door jam. You can't enter or leave easily. WHY would no one form a line in front of the display case to manage the queue, keep the door unobstructed and people more comfortable? The good: The bread is generally very good (try the bordelais and the caraway rye, a classic Polish bread). The baguette is also nice as is the miche. Some of the pastries are also quite good, like the orange liqueur brioche, though some are simply okay (the pies are overpriced; nothing special, save your money). The French onion soup isn't bad, though it sort of lacks a proper flavor base like most of the heartier food options I've tried (see below). Coffee is delicious, no doubt largely owing to their supplier, El Dorado. The bad: The food options can be okay, but many are shamefully subpar. Breakfast options are average. Seafood soup is dishwater. Tasteless, watery, and expensive. Lentil soup was acceptable maybe once, but also often watery and overpriced. Bœuf bourguignon is mediocre. Either Francois's kitchen hasn't mastered the art of the flavor base, or else he is intentionally watering down his dishes to stretch out supplies. The location: Charming, located by Austin Street. I ordered a croissant and caramel latte from this small cafe and I enjoyed my latte the most. The best thing, and most immediate thing I observed while visiting is that they had great customer service and were very patient with me as I figured out my order. This was both the cashier and the barista, even when I had to double-back and they were quite busy. The cafe is small and nice to sit for a quick bite, but not a place to linger for a long conversation. There ate wooden tables and chairs inside the space and a bit of seating outside as well. When I visited one weekend morning, there was a line that went out the door but I was still able to place my order promptly. read more

Was early for my lunch appointment and I wanted a hot chocolate. I remembered this place does not disappoint, if you want real hot chocolate not water down one. I came in and there were 2 people in front of me. After I finished ordering, there was a line out the door since the queue line is close to the door. Easily my favorite spot in Forest Hills, worth going out of your way to visit. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere with ample seating, enjoyed everything I've tried so far. They bake their own bread in house and the baguette and sourdough bread is easily S-tier. However the lines on weekends can get very long and will go out the door at times, but it moves fast. Things I've tried so far: - Jambon Cru: Cured ham and cheese in baguette with truffle butter and salad side. One of my favorite sandwiches - savory and satisfying without being greasy or too heavy. Easily a regular go to order for me. 5/5 - Spinach Quiche: Good balance of spinach and egg, pastry crust a bit tough, and portion is on the smaller side but overall excellent. Comes with a salad side. 4/5 - Raspberry Beignet: The jam is homemade and not to sweet, donut is perfectly fried. 5/5 - Baked omelette: Not my favorite as I find the eggs too dry, but there was a generous amount of mushrooms. 3/5 - Baguette and sourdough: Does not always come as a side but worth paying extra for. I think they offer many options of desserts, treats and sandwiches in many sizes which is great! I took home 2 desserts, felt it was a bit overpriced for the size of the dessert but they were definitely tasty! The black forest was my favorite pick, meanwhile the mille foille had delicious creamy texture but the top coat was sugary compared to the rest of it! Good pastries do not give the owner rights to be rude and threatening. Yesterday, he was standing over and yelling at four customers. One group was two very old ladies likely in their 80s, while the other two ladies are middle aged. His voice was angry and loud enough for the full house of customers to hear. Apparently, he was upset that someone complained about a dry madeleine. The verbal abuse was unnecessary. It was just simply wrong. Completely unprofessional. I browsed through their selection and decided on the fraisier cake ($8.5) and an iced matcha latte ($7). * Iced Matcha Latte ($7) I got this with oat milk. The iced matcha latte was elite - immediate 5/5. They made it exactly how I would have made mine. It was reallllly good and might even be in my top three matcha lattes. I love a stronger matcha flavor, and this one delivered a thousand percent. If you're a matcha lover like me, this is the drink to get. Fraisier cake ($8.5) This cake was my biggest regret. Naurrrrrr. Perhaps I set the bar too high because of the fancy name, but it was so hard and blocky that I struggled to even fork into it. Nothing like Cannelle Patisserie's strawberry shortcake, which is soft, velvety, and creamy. This one was definitely creamy too - but in the wrong way. It was weirdly hard, which just didn't work. I have been purchasing sourdough baguettes for about couple of years with a friend. We usually have a tradition to take long walks to the bakery to purchase a few things. However, with time the size (initially the length and subsequently the girth) of the baguettes has decreased. The change was noticeable to both of us. I would rather that the establishment increase the price and be upfront about it than reduce the size of the baguette. Otherwise, the taste of the sourdough baguettes is heavenly! read more

My updated review is long overdue! I buy a loaf of their delicious Carraway Rye every two weeks for my breakfast toast. I buy their incomparable, squeezable Baguette every week, sometimes twice a week for Merguez sandwiches, Chicken Prosciutto sandwiches, and garlic bread: it's THAT good. The crepes are so delicious here! My favorite is the sausage (lamb), egg and cheese crepe. Gotta have it right away while it's hot. The crepe is fluffy and buttery. It takes about 10 minutes to make fresh. It also depends on how long the line is. There's a longer wait during prime eating time. The baguettes are very very good also. Have to get one to go. You can get it in half or whole. It's so soft day of, then toast after that. Their strawberry cheesecake is phenomenal. Nice, fluffy and not too sweet. They have it as a whole cake or slices. I like the chai latte and have it with oat milk. If eating in, it comes in a small bowl. They have 1 long communal table and 3 small tables for people to eat in. This place was so good. I'm in the area a lot and I'm glad I found this spot. I stopped here for breakfast. There was a line out the door and every seat was taken inside and out. By the time I got my food and drink a spot opened up outside thankfully. I had a pear juice and a scone. The coffee line was separate than the bakery line and was even longer. The scone was fresh and flavorful. I'd love to come back here and try more of their options. There were other breakfast options available; their coffee smelled very fresh too. This spot could do better with everything they have going for them. I'll start by saying the spot is extremely popular and often has a long line out the door. The inside is very cute with classic French countryside vibes and a large communal table which makes for a unique social dynamic. Where things fall short is the service and the food. Neither is bad. The service is more chaotic than anything - they have so many staff in a small place trying to help the crowd, they often get lost on who is next or when orders are up. On coffee and pastries - it's just okay. It's far from emulating an average Parisian bakery which is disappointing given the cute window they have to the baking kitchen. What's more many of the items are not baked on site (my first visit we were waiting over 40 min on a weekend for a pastry to be delivered from the... supplier?). What I don't understand is why people wait so long to shop or sit her; I think Forest Hills has pent up demand for upscale baked goods with charming seating, especially this close to Ascan. What's is special are items prepped on demand like French Toast. If you want to settle in a cozy cafe corner to relax with one of these, you'll walk away happy - if you manage to get a seat and don't end up walking home with takeout instead, which is definitely is happing on a weekend if you don't leave waiting to get through the line first. read more

TL;DR: Neighborhood staple observes regular customer steal my food and nearly lets him get away with it. I've been coming to this place for years whenever I'm in the FH area. It's got great coffee and pastries and the place has a great atmosphere. I'm sad that I'll have to give up such a lovely establishment. I'm not some Karen who swears off an establishment after a bad experience then comes back next week with a face mask shades, and a visor. I haven't set foot in a Starbucks for two years and I don't plan to for the next 70-80. Today I decided to try something besides the reliable pastries. I walked in with my mom and ordered a smoked salmon croissant. Mom orders her usual raisin bread and coffee. My name is called and I come up to the counter right behind an individual who sprung up after hearing MY name. After he leaves I'm left looking at just the bread and the coffee. "I guess the sandwiches take some time", I think to myself. I wait long enough for this sandwich to the point where I have to get up and feed the meter again. While I'm doing so my mom inquires about the missing croissant. The counter worker claims that she already served it to her. Then changes her story and points to a gentleman eating a smoked salmon croissant after a couple more insistences and a request to check the cameras. Remember the guy in front of me? Turns out the reason why he was so eager to hear a name that wasn't his is because he had picked up my sandwich RIGHT before I was able to even walk over to the counter and brought it back to his table. He was called out on this and his excuse nearly sent me over the edge. He claimed that he had ordered a smoked salmon croissant as well and thought it was his....failing to mention that he had received AND finished his sandwich PRIOR to picking mine up! So after nearly a half hour of waiting...I received a clearly pre made, bland, spongy smoked salmon croissant. It was ice cold and it tasted like nothing. Did I receive an apology from the customer or counter worker? NO! Did the same counter worker greet him by name on his way out of the restaurant? YES! I can only write a review on factual information. Maintaining my unbiased opinion was hard in this instance, but I tried my best. I am not claiming that this regular customer and a counter worker conspired to have me go hungry. That would be ridiculous. What I will claim, however, is the utter irresponsibility and incompetence of a staff that I'm sure have been trained in conflict resolution and simply dropped the ball due to their judgement being clouded by seeing a familiar face. read more

This is the best French place in Forest hills! Their pear almond tart is magical. It tastes amazing, perfectly flavored. Their flourless chocolate cake is also really good, as well as their bread and croissants. Their bakery is top notch. The French onion soup is also really good. The beef bourguignon is also very good, but not the best I've had by far. It would definitely be improved by coming with potatoes or mashed potatoes, otherwise the portion seems small. The make your own salad is good but again not great. It would be better if they had at least a spinach option besides iceberg lettuce and some more salad dressing options.
