Fantasy gets 5 stars from me because it is the BEST AND MOST AUTHENTIC Chinese restaurant in the North Bay. While they do have your usual staple of Americanized-Chinese dishes, what makes this place special is the fact they have BBQ meats like roast duck and char su among its selection. I usually come here for the lunch BBQ plates and they are a great bargain. You get an abundance of great fresh bbq with rice and veggies at a great lunch too. Fantasy has hot pot for those who are interested in Chinese hot pot, but I haven't tried that yet. Fantasy has two floors of seating, though they only use the upstairs seating for busy occasions. Service by the waitresses is friendly and attentive. What surprises me is that some of their bbq items like the roast pork and roast duck taste better than some of the joints in Chinatown, SF. You would be hard pressed to find a better and more authentic Chinese restaurant in the Sonoma County area. read more

This was such a toss up. I think that it is the menu that throws me off, it is more of a catering place than restaurant. It would be easy to feed an army here if you could agree on what to get. I think that it would be hard for me to get others to go here because of the menu, the specials menu seems to be the way to go. I got the spicy Mongolian chicken and liked it. The meat was some deformed version, probably soaked in water for way too long. It was kind of weird texturally. If you re heat the meat it starts to turn back to normal in a shriveled up stage. It was delicious however and they did not hold back. This is what I love about cooks when they go all in. They didn't even skimp when it came to the peppers, throw it on! This place is not easy to find, and doesn't look appealing from the outside. The waiters have thick accent. However, the food is awesome. The price is a bit higher compared to other similar chinese food, but they compensate it with a bigger portion. I highly recommend this place. read more

You cannot imagine, the culinary masterpieces coming out of the kitchen, in this unassuming, little Chinese Restaurant in Petaluma. The Duck is cooked to tender perfection by Chef Vincent. (Whom, I had to speak to personally- something I have never done. So that could tell him this is the best duck I have had outside of Paris, France). But back to the food...., The fried rice with crab and shrimp was light and fresh. You must also try the green onion pancakes, so flaky and delicious. Our service from Joanne was warm and friendly. We will definitely be back, as this is our new favorite restaurant in Sonoma County. I was so excited to read the fantastic reviews on yelp for a legit hot pot place in the north bay. As soon as I saw the reviews last weekend, I drove right over since I was in the area anyway and unfortunately learned they only have takeout options at this time, and not indoor dining. Part of the fun for my family in eating hot pot is cooking the meal together, so I felt that bringing home hot pot wasn't ideal since I don't have the special divider pan (although it was a take-out option). Instead, we ordered the crispy roast pork to go which was excellent. The staff said that they are anticipating re-opening in July 2022 for indoor dining and I'm very eager to provide a proper Yelpy review then. read more

Best new Chinese restaurant in Petaluma (coming from a Chinese reviewer, born and raised in northern China). We've ordered a handful of random dishes each time we go, and never have we been disappointed. My personal favorite(s) is the cold appetizer spicy chicken dish, and their salt & pepper spicy tofu! The quality and quantity surpass the prices, which are actually quite reasonable and maybe even lower than others in town like Lilly Kai. The service was way better than your average Chinese restaurant. The servers were extremely attentive and friendly. Highly recommend trying this place if you haven't yet! This place is deceiving, the parking lot is shared and the signage is pretty bad. That being said, there are perfectly cooked Whole Ducks hanging in the window, every type of meat you could want with an amazing honey sauce to coat it in, and their own lobster tank! We've ordered from them for birthdays, weekend visits from the parents, and when we we're sick and need soup. On Christmas Eve, guess where we ordered dinner takeout from... This place! Whole roasted duck, cold chilli chicken, and beef and sweet potato noodles were a big hit at our friends gathering. Everyone was surprised that the "glass-noodles" were made from sweet potato. It looked like silver noodles, a special type of non-gluten noodles in Vietnamese and Thai cuisine. The names of some Chinese restaurants are sometimes laughable. They continue to amuse me with names like "Pu Pu Hot Pot", the "Wok of Flame", the "Puk King Palace" and the likes. Then when ownership changes, walla! Add the word "New" and we have a spanking new place....... the New Pu Pu! Fantasy is not a sleazy motel or massage joint but a respectable mom and pop family operated restaurant. I have to give the owners credit for introducing authentic Hong Kong style BBQs to Petaluma and the North Bay. So why not try some of Fantasy's signature dishes which unfortunately were not fantastic enough for me to fantasize returning! Hanging above the front counter was a familiar sight at any Cantonese BBQ restaurant. Who can resist a bright red piece of luscious BBQ pork? Or a crispy skin roasted duck or a cut of glittering roasted pork belly? We opted for the Princess Chicken ($12.99/ Half) that is beloved by the Chinese. The breed of chicken is fondly referred to as "wong mo gai" (yellow feather chicken, a Chinese heritage breed). The Princess Chicken in Fantasy was lightly poached and escorted with a side of ginger/green onion condiment. It was flavorful, perfectly salted and velvety firm in texture. The bumpy looking skin may appear unappetizing and the chicken too bony and skinny to consume. These were however the hard to believe reasons why the Chinese preferred them to the fat oversized farm chickens where the meat can sometimes be rubbery or as bland as tofu. They do love to nibble on the bones and savor the meat and smooth skin. Offering a Chinese guest a piece of boneless, skinless breast can be construed as being discourteous and inhospitable. Fantasy's Princess Chicken was good but not mind blowing. Maybe the freshness was suspect since I doubt the Princess Chicken was a good seller in this area and possibly a leftover from the previous day. (3.5/5) Fantasy's rendition of Ma Po Tofu ($9.99) was a mere spin on a classic Szechuan dish. The bright spicy red sauce had a healthy dose of oil that unfortunately drowned the soft cubes of silken tofu and the generous bits of ground pork. Fantasy's recipe stopped right there and omitted the all-important Szechuan peppercorns that imparted bursts of that mouth numbing "mala" goodness that was the dominant and authentic taste in Szechuan cuisine. Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of the numbness. Neither did I miss the tingling kick-in-your-tongue sensation! The dish was otherwise fairly flavorful as long as you like tofu and can handle some mild heat. (3/5). The Beef Stew Noodle Soup ($15.99) gave us a happy ending albeit pricey for what it was. Right off the bet, do not expect hand pulled house made noodles. The chunks of beef stew were tender, though not melt-in-your-mouth tender. I thought the broth was a little underwhelming but certainly not lacking in depth and beefiness. Maybe there was a little too much liquid versus meat or it required a little more boiling time to bring out its full flavor. There was a certain je ne sais quoi about the broth that I couldn't quite put my finger on but it nonetheless was a satisfying bowl of noodles! (3.5/5) The exterior was nondescript. The interior was bare bones with minimalistic décor and no kitschy artifacts or tacky menus plastered on the wall. I can tell the owners were operating under a shoestring budget. If you live in the area, Fantasy would work well in a pinch saving you time, effort and $$$ in toll charges and gas to cross the Bridge. read more

Unless the restaurant is Michelin rated, I would never give a 5-star, otherwise 5-star is meaningless. Fantasy gets a 4-star from my wife and I. Fantasy offers the most authentic Cantonese style Chinese BBQ, they are also the only HOTPOT restaurant in the entire North Bay. It is now finally very cold in the night. I have plenty of fond childhood memories enjoying hotpot during winter nights in Hong Kong, so my wife and I had decided to give their hotpot a try by not taking the low star rating advice. Date and time of visit: 12/09/2017 (Saturday) 5:30 pm. We ordered the half and half broths. I tasted the "original" and the "mild spicy" broths before adding anything to them, and they both tasted great without the unnecessary complexity. I had ordered beef slides, pork shoulder slides, pea sprouts, Napa cabbage, braised tofu, tiger shrimp, fish fillet, winter melon, enoki mushroom, shiitake mushroom and glass noodles, with sesame dipping sauce. These are what I would order the next time when I visit Fantasy for hotpot again with " ____ " as highly recommended for their broths: "fish fillet" (so soft and silky), "winter melon" (nice and soft once cooked and great with picking up the flavor of the broth), "pea sprouts", "Napa cabbage", enoki mushroom, glass noodles, plain tofu, plus any kind of meat slides. As more items were added to the broths over our course of 90 minutes of dinning experience, the flavor of the broths just keeping on getting better, richer through reduction, with more complexity, specially their "original" broth. Foodies who are familiar with Hong Kong style hotpot, they eat politely, slowly, and always consume the noodles with soup / broth toward the end of the meal, when the broth turns into the best part of the entire meal itself. I regularly passed by this place and now wish I had ordered many meals months ago! Their Hong Kong style BBQ features the traditional meats that you see hanging in the windows of many Chinatown restaurants. The flavor of their char siu is fantastic! I was a bit skeptical about this place from its location and difficulty finding it, but the article in the paper inspired us to try it. So very glad we did! The food here is absolutely amazing. We tried a bit of everything - eggrolls, green beans, bbq pork, honey prawns, mongolian beef, a chicken dish, etc. Every dish was top notch. The most impressive thing, and I know this sounds crazy, was the vegetables. They were perfectly cooked - not mushy and not too crunchy. They also give a variety of vegetables in the dishes, not just filler stuff. Try the green beans and see what you think. Note that this place is not exactly the Americanized type of Chinese food you're used to - it's more authentic. This place is now my go-to for Chinese food in Petaluma. read more

I got takeaway, and right away I had to dock a star because all of the containers leaked. Thankfully the plastic bags contained the mess, but the containers used weren't ever meant for something with sauce. Garlic eggplant was good, though not as spicy as I would like. The beef and sweet potato noodle was delicious and the chow mien was pretty standard flavor-wise but a standout because of the heap of fresh veggies it was made with. The crispy sesame beef sounded tasty, and was but turned out to be more sweet than spicy - I am not familiar enough with American Chinese restaurants to say if that is expected or not. Portion sizes were fairly typical for Chinese takeaway, though if you order brown rice be aware that the containers won't be packed to the top like the white rice ones are. read more

There was a "honeymoon period" right after their opening when they offered certain items at reasonable prices when they first opened. But times are a changing and those "fantasy prices" at Fantasy are long gone! So therefore I'm no longer in Fantasia! These type places are a dime a dozen south of the GGB. BUT once you cross anywhere north of the GGB though....places like Fantasy become your ONLY option for HK BBQ AKA siu mei and they can aggressively mark up pricing for even a simple 2 items with white rice for $12 dolluhs! Yes 12 smackeroonis! Why? Cause they ain't no big dummy! Lemme channel my inner Chris Rock! "How much for one rib?" Cuz I just want one rib! For what they charge!! Cause for what you are getting....eeh just order the roast duck or cha siu or roasted pork a la carte sans the rice to go.....My top recommendation is their roasted pork out of the big 3...that skin I must say was crispylicious. The fact that they do catering in this area is a huge coup for their business when there is local banquets/events for my peeps held out here. Overall 3.5 stars. Legit, this place is legit. I have been driving to the city when I get a craving for some char siu and crispy duck, fave place in China Town is Silver Moon. Well now I can get the same thing from a much cleaner kitchen and a lot closer right here! The noodles are great, the lemon fish is amazing, the duck and the accompanying sauce are super tasty and the duck skin is perfectly crispy. The char siu is exactly what I was looking for and the aroma of it sweetly wafts through the entrench as you walk in. I will be back, many times! read more

It's just alright. I came in expecting way better food. It was not bad at all, it was just normal. I've definitely had better fried rice, better salt and pepper ribs, and better Mongolian beef. I pickup Chinese food about one time per month at Fantasy and it's always amazing! I'm a person who likes to try something new time pretty consistently so I've had a ton of their dishes, from the wonton soup, noodle soup with duck and wonton's, stir fried shrimp and veggies, barbeque pork and veggies (last night) and it's always so delicious. Sauces aren't overly heavy and the food always tastes and looks very fresh. I particularly appreciate the amount of fresh veggies in their dishes - tons of broccoli, celery, carrot, zucchini, etc. Also, the service is always super nice as well. I wished I dined in here more to enjoy their hot pot which is top notch and so delicious. The only thing that could be improved slightly are the egg rolls, but I've been meaning to try their green onion pancake. Super delicious Chinese food that I highly recommend! read more

Stupid restaurant name (makes me think of a skanky massage parlor) but worth it for the hot pot. The tables have the heating element in the center, they bring you a giant vat of tasty broth, and you pick ingredients from a long list. You get very fresh ingredients, they make sure you know what needs to be cooked, and you get a lot of each ingredient! Enough that i brought a bunch home to make my own soup. They can do half and half broth, too, which worked great with a vegetarian friend. The atmosphere is "meh" or worse, but the staff was very friendly and the place was doing okay. Do ignore the cheesy name and lack of elegance, and enjoy fun hot pot! read more

The inside of the restaurant is very odd. I was seated on the first floor and unless they're hiding a ton of tables up top this place must live off the takeout business. The food was good, nothing to write home about, I've had much better Chinese food before. They have what's almost like a hot pepper jam on the tables, I think it's their homemade take on a chili sauce, that was the one standout of this place, that little sauce is killer. The service was very fast and very polite. This place definitely doesn't lose points in that department.
