As a Black Indigenous American woman, shrimp and grits represents far more than a menu item to me. It is a dish shaped by generations of cultural exchange and resilience, drawing from Indigenous corn traditions and the culinary practices carried by African ancestors and preserved within Gullah Geechee communities. Because of that rich heritage, I hold this dish in high regard. Unfortunately, this version felt disconnected from the flavors, textures, and history that make shrimp and grits such a meaningful part of Southern food traditions. My husband ultimately sent his meal back and ordered the fish sandwich instead, which he also found disappointing. I added an egg to my dish in hopes that it might improve the experience, but it arrived long after I had already lost the desire to continue eating. I was also surprised that, in a state with such a strong military presence, particularly in Baltimore, there didn't offer a military discount. What saddens me most is that we chose this restaurant over several other options because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews. I believe honest reviews matter, both for future customers and for owners who genuinely want feedback to improve.
