There was nothing memorable about the food. I've had Mediterranean fast food in the past and it's been pretty good. The food here was unremarkable. I had the Falafel pita with hummus. Got the Athens plate because it sounded like a nice selection of their food - Falafel is rather tasteless; best part is watching that machine make them - Greek salad was disappointing; I have never had the kind of dressing they put on with a Greek salad before and it was not good. No zest, no kick - Gyro meat is a little dry but still has that salty good taste - The seasoned pita was pretty good Overall not worth the trip. If you want a a gyro and you happen to be walking the pearl street mall, this is the place for you. Anyone from the east coast can tell right away if the gyros will be good or not. With that being said, cucumbers have that particular smell to them, you know, fresh! I wasn't met with this experience last time I happen to have to eat here. Alright, so I'm from the Rust Belt and we pronounce gyros as one would pronounce gyrate (not like "hero," which is the proper pronunciation). No matter which way you say it, Falafel King makes them great. While Pearl Street may lack the Rust Belt's gritty charm, you can't knock the deals they have at this Boulder staple. More than just a gyro, you can get your choice of delicious sides, such as tabbouli, baba gannoush, eggplant and hummus. The decor is also very interesting, so it's a nice place to eat indoors if it's chilly out. If it's warm out, though, it's in a prime location on the Pearl Street Mall in front of the courthouse. Get yours to go and find a nice bench or plot of grass and people watch while you suck down your lamb. read more

This was a solid place and where we usually have dinner before a concert at The Boulder Theater, since it's right across the street. The food is good, not great, the service is friendly but a little harried during the dinner hour, and my biggest complaint is that the restaurant is a little dirty during busy times. They have limited outside seating, which would have been nice on our recent visit. I got the schwarma wrap, which had turkey and lamb. It was perfectly satisfying, although I would have preferred just lamb. My husband ordered the chicken plate, which he loved. They do have some homemade lemonade but I don't think I would order it again since it was sort of watered down. Quite possibly the worst Mediterranean meal I've ever had. I rarely write yelp reviews but this was so bad I felt I had to warn people of making a big mistake. Got a chicken shawarma and a 'Greek supreme' salad. The veggies on the shawarma were soggy and the chicken was very dry. The salad was terrible - the portion of baba ganoush was so small, my wife had to ask for a bit more - especially since it was advertised as a 'side dish' to the salad. Very little feta and the tomatoes weren't fresh - more of a salsa. And the value for what we paid for $8 for the shawarma, $8 for the salad, was just laughable. My wife and i put this meal as one of the worst we've ever had to pay for. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

I've been going to this place since the 1970s, when it was owned by a lovely Israeli couple and the food was nothing short of delicious. If you know anything about falafel, it's like most any other deep fried food -- best consumed on the spot. If the falafel balls sit around for more than a few minutes, they lose their crunchy-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside delight. Unfortunately, the current crew behind the counter are completely clueless about the art of falafel making. They don't cook them long enough (leaving the insides doughy and gross), and they don't seem to cook them to order anymore, leaving them sitting under a heat lamp. The result is that -- after 30 years -- I now avoid the place and have found myself over at Garbanzo's in the 29th St. Mall. Garbanzo's isn't authentic, but it's passable and the folks behind the counter actually act as if they care about what they're serving. Please, please, Falafel King owners, either train the folks behind the counter better or fire them. read more

I never was a fan of Gyro's until I spent some time working in Athens Greece. A friend who'd recommended me took me to a gyro stand, a little hole in the wall place near where I was working. I went there as often as I could. My wife took me to Pearl Street Mall and to Falafel King as she likes Falafels. I thought I'd try a Gyro and it was pretty good. Not as good as the ones in Athens but good enough. I agree with the other comment that there was a tad too much lettuce in the pita and the pita was a bit dry but the overall flavor was very good. I don't think an American restaurant could match a Greek one, partly because of the health code restrictions (I was a little surprised at the food preparation in Athens :) ). This is one of the few places I will go out of my way to eat at. read more

This place is AMAZING. It sits on the Pearl Street Mall not looking like anything fancy, but don't let appearances fool you, the food is, I think, the best ethnic food in Boulder. As many others have said, everything there is SO fresh. The Falafel balls come literally right out of the fryer WARM, and the salad greens that top or side most dishes are real greens (not the gross Iceberg and carrot string stuff you see at a lot of delis) with homemade dressing. Oh, and their homemade lemonade? STUPID. The staff there are so friendly and you can tell they take pride in what they know is a fabulous product. Meh. The service here suffers the same malady as in most fast casual joints: the line is ineffective so customers wait too long between stations, and is the staff too apathetic to try harder. Let's be fair to them though: since they probably make about $8 and hour and there aren't many service opportunities for tips, employees have little motiovation to be personable or helpful. However, the scraggly young guy there today seemed to be asleep and had to rescued repeatedly from failure by the others. Look, I know it's hard to do this kind of job. I've been there. I've worked at and been a supervisor at places like this, but what I saw today was just depressing. And the food? Meh again. The hummus is solid, but everything else is forgettable. It's probably fairly priced if all the ingredients are as fresh as they claim, but I've been to other more family-style mediterranean food joints at a similar price point but with much better quality. The Falafel King is a great option for a quick bite to eat on the Pearl Street Mall. I tried the gyro combo, which came with the standard fries and a drink for around $10. Falafel King is not the standard gyro I am used to being served up by the Greek's in Detroit, but it was better than expected. I guess I can say healthier than expected... I have never had a gyro with a fresh greens mix including spinach. Everything else was pretty much standard, but that took be back a bit. The service was quick and attentive. You order from the counter, cafeteria style and pay at the end of the counter. There is a medium size dinning area you can sit and enjoy your food in. Also, they have a water jug by the trash.recycling cans that was filled with slices of cucumber. I thought this was a nice touch for a quick serve style restaurant. read more

I like the food here. Good hummus, good falalfel, good schwarma. It's a little pricey for fast food, but it's a good alternative and I can get salad, too. In warmer months, I like sitting outside and people-watching while I eat. My only complaint is that most of the staff seems miserable and exhausted, and some of them are downright unpleasant to deal with. One woman in particular always seems cranky, both to customers and her co-workers. She has actually argued with me before when I asked a question about ingredients. Just so you are aware this place will use food past its expiration date. They are supposed to keep the gyro meat for around 4 hours and log the time. They do not follow health code and will in fact fudge the little white board. If they even do that much. The workers here are incredibly lazy. I once saw the old white lady who works here drop a set of tongs onto the floor and then dunk them into the falafel fryer, then use same tongs to get the gyro meat... The owner is a bad person as well he holds checks hostage from workers and will tell them to sue him as he hangs up hiding behind his telephone.
