One of my favorite places to eat in Boulder, and it's a great stop when I am on the Pearl Street Mall. Great service, consistently positive staff, and food that never lets me down. A fine place for lunch. The line is usually long but they move orders through their assembly line pretty fast. It's a pretty good deal- my 6 x 4 (6 falafel, 4 sides) plate lasted me two light meals and cost $9.99. Most options ranged from $7-10. The falafel balls are small and airy but light on herbs and flavor, rather indicative of my whole meal. I enjoyed the Greek delight (feta, olives, dill, tomato and cucumber I believe) and the dolmas the most of the sides. The hummus was creamy but not particularly special and the baba ganoush was meh. The pita was small and pretty doughy- I wish it was toasted. Overall, I found myself looking for more flavor- garlic, herbs, lemon- like I associate with Mediterranean food. Some acidity and maybe a little more salt would have brought out all the fresh elements on the plate! I wished they hadn't forgotten the hot sauce they offered up on the side, that surely would have helped lend some flavor. I would go back if I was really craving this sort of food but I definitely would not go out of my way. There's way too many better places to eat on Pearl Street. Uhm yum! This Isa great place to go to if you're looking for a quick but cheap place to eat at Boulder. Their falafels, hence their name, were amazing and not burnt for once! Their menu is a little confusing due the multiple combinations and deals. I went for a deal that included a gyro and six pieces of falafel. While the gyro was great, it wasn't the most extraordinary in my opinion. Not meaning it tasted bad, it just isn't the best I've tasted. The service was quick and the establishment was clean. My friend and I stumbled in here after a day of shopping on Pearl. I had been meaning to try it for a while, and there I finally was... The wait was a little long BUT that was fine with me because I watched them put all the fresh ingredients in my falafel wrap AND you could see the fresh meat being cooked right then and there. So I didn't mind waiting because I knew they were taking their time to make my wonderful falafel wrap.. and it was! I scarfed that baby down like it was nobody's business! Falafel King is so good! A bit of a splurge ($10 for a decent sized meal), but good food. They have little samples outside and are so conveniently located on Pearl Street. I got the Falafel Gyro with hummus and loved it. The owner served us and was so friendly. They have good cucumber water and are as sustainable as possible. I rounded up from 3 1/2 stars on this visit during Labor day weekend. The mall was pretty busy and so was Falafel King. The counter was a few people deep but didn't take long and they were efficient at taking the orders and getting them correct. I had the Greek salad with gyro. The salad was larger than average.The gyro meat unfortunately was a bit over cooked on the flat top after it came off the spit. There could have been more gyro as well. Overall the salad was good as the dressing and ingredients were fresh and flavorfull. My GF got the chicken platter. The chicken had good flavor and was cooked properly and the humus was great. We got whole wheat pitas which was a nice touch. The dining room was clean and I wouldn't mind stopping in again if I was on the mall and looking for a quick bite. read more

Very disappointing! Came here to have authentic falafel and the falafel is nothing special. Too soft. Not crispy. No flavor. Garbanzos makes better falafel. Pita bread isn't hot and fresh. Soggy. It is a small and unassuming place for a quck bite. The elder gentleman who greeted me was very nice. He offered me samples of the gyro and freshly fried falafels. He said that those were the best in Boulder. I honestly cannot confirm or refute that claim. However, the falefel was undercook in the center despite well fried on the outside. The gyro fared a bit better. It was definitely well cooked and seasoned. So much seasoned that it was very very salty. The girl at the resgister was ver nice as well. She was ok with my request to reduce the amount of meat, and to add hummus instead. But I dont think I can recommend this place. I know I am very biased as I had outstanding falafel in NYC. We stopped in here for dinner while exploring Pearl St. and oh man am I glad we did. The staff was very friendly and helped my wife decide on what to get. But the real feature is the food! So good! The tzatziki sauce was amazing and honestly would go great on anything. My gyro was perfect, just the right amount of meat, toppings and sauce! I would eat here again in a heart beat. The only reasons I can't give 5 stars is that the diced cucumber and tomatoes are mixed together, it's a small complaint I know, but I'm not a big fan of tomatoes, but love cucumbers. The other reason is that the falafel balls I got were a little over done so they were dry and a little bland (nothing a dunk in sauce couldn't help with though! ) read more

Let me start by saying most of the food here is quite good. Exceptional even. However, I had a horrible customer service experience here, and it made it almost impossible to enjoy my meal. After being told that double meat would cost $5 (which is already a bit ridiculous) and my sandwich would be 8.75, I was charged $11 for the sandwich and $6 for the extra meat. After all was said and done I was charged $20 for one meal, and an extra $4 for a drink for my friend. Apparently while I was in line the cashier asked me if I had ordered something different than what I had ordered (which appeared to have been written down for her) and she was incredibly indignant when I asked why I was being charged so much. She immediately seemed offended that I had asked, even though I started the conversation by apologizing. She then explained to me that the difference was only about $1.30 (even though the difference between 8.75 and $11 alone is more than that) and repeated to her manager(?) a few times that I had "told her I wanted the special and now I didn't want it and wanted my money back" which I never stated or implied. The nuance of the interaction is hard to convey here, but I was misquoted on the price of my meal and then treated like a jerk just for asking about the miscommunication. I ended up leaving satiated but disappointed with the experience. I won't be returning, sadly. read more

Tasted the sample of falafel outside the place on Pearl Street. Kept walking and was so stunned by the taste that I turned around. Came for lunch and was happily surprised. I love a good falafel. I made a pita wrap with chicken and feta and falafel and it was delicious. Almost as good as the falafel in Israel! read more

I stumbled across this place while strolling down Pearl street. They were giving out free samples of gyros and falafel and after trying it, decided to grab a quick bite to eat. I saw falafel being fried right in front of me, it was fun to watch. We got a Shawarma and a Gyro wrapped in pita. I loved the warm pita and meat with the cold greens and onions. The tzatziki sauce added a creaminess to the wrap. The only criticism is that I expected my order to be a bit bigger for the price. I forget how much I like this place because I don't go in often. Every time I ask myself why I don't stop in more frequently. Their food is tasty and quite quick when wandering around downtown and you don't want a full sit down experience. The outside tables are perfect for listening to music (when it's being played by artists on the mall) and people watching. The hot sauce isn't too hot and gives a great extra layer of flavor to the pitas. I've only ever had the hummus and falafel pita...but it's great. Their sides of tabouleh and dolmas all look great but I can't ever bring myself to try something different there :-/ I'm sure they're worth it though! read more

If you want a a gyro and you happen to be walking the pearl street mall, this is the place for you. Anyone from the east coast can tell right away if the gyros will be good or not. With that being said, cucumbers have that particular smell to them, you know, fresh! I wasn't met with this experience last time I happen to have to eat here. The proper Greek pronunciation for Gyro sandwich is "Yee-roh". Someone in Boulder started calling it a "Hero" sandwich and sadly whole damn town calls it a Hero now. My pita bread was stale, and $8 for a sandwich is a little much, especially considering the cramped dining space. Great location but this place is really mediocre. I went in there last night knowing that it was not going to be very good (see some of the previous reviews) but I love gyros & falafel and was hungry. Ordered a gyros and a falafel -- nice young man behind the counter but he was a little distracted -- asked me 3 times if it was for here or to go. Then asked if I wanted onions and hot sauce (???) on the gyros. I said "yes, but no hot sauce". Next I see the young Hispanic lady next to him putting hot sauce on the pita -- looks could've killed when I said I had asked for NO hot sauce (she really seemed to have an attitude issue as I heard the young man following every request he made to her with a por favor). Toppings for both the gyro and falafel consisted of a lot of lettuce (I don't know if lettuce is authentic for gyros/falafel but they sure used a lot), a minimum of chopped onions, chopped cucumber and tzatsiki/tahina. They had some other toppings behind the counter including marinated eggplant but the young man said anything else would be extra $. The pitas for both the gyro and falafel were pretty thin and broke apart as I was eating them. Overall not a great experience. I wouldn't go back. Not the best gyro I've had. The employees were pretty rude to me. I just wanted some gyro and falafel lol. The gyro was just okay. I do agree with the other reviewers that the meat was lacking and a bit dry. The employee put the tzatziki sauce into my gyro and asked for some tzatziki sauce and he rudely said nope. The main reason I am giving this place two stars is because of how rude and careless the employees seem to be. They seem to not give a EF about customer service and making good Mediterranean food. Overall, Falafel King is a decent place for a quick bite on Pearl Street but the food and service are so lackluster it leaves you with a sense of regret, and that's not just from all the extra pita bread you just ate. The girl making my order (the gyro special) seemed like she had absolutely no idea what she was doing and was moving at a pace so slow that a sloth could have made a gyro in quicker time. It was both funny and really, really weird. The girl at the register wasn't friendly either and the apathy was ruining my desire for falafel balls. I'm not a falafel expert (if you are, then please add me as your "friend" because a Yelp friend with falafel expertise must be truly rare and valuable). However, my order seemed fresh and tasty enough. The falafel were smaller than I've eaten elsewhere, but they were nevertheless the perfect size for my four-year-old to gleefully shove in his mouth, thereby considerably reducing the overall noise level of the restaurant. I love my son, but I know that his Jacob Silj impersonation can get a bit overwhelming for other patrons. This place is AMAZING. It sits on the Pearl Street Mall not looking like anything fancy, but don't let appearances fool you, the food is, I think, the best ethnic food in Boulder. As many others have said, everything there is SO fresh. The Falafel balls come literally right out of the fryer WARM, and the salad greens that top or side most dishes are real greens (not the gross Iceberg and carrot string stuff you see at a lot of delis) with homemade dressing. Oh, and their homemade lemonade? STUPID. The staff there are so friendly and you can tell they take pride in what they know is a fabulous product. I work quite close to this restaurant, so it makes for a quick and easy lunch or dinner. For the most part their food is really good, though they occasionally overcook/burn some of the meat for the sandwiches, and the pita bread has been stale on more than one occasion. It's kind of pricey, but for an occasional snack it can be good. The reason to go here would be the hummus, because it rocks (I've tried a lot of the varieties). But, with the fact that they sell the hummus in grocery stores like Whole Foods, who needs the restaurant (and the prices on the hummus are more expensive at the restaurant too)? Anyway, I'll continue to visit when I am really craving a gyro (and hopefully it won't be burnt/stale) because it's so close to work... But I think they could definitely drop their prices a bit or at least be sure the sandwiches are always of high quality. read more

I will say one thing: they have the best actual Falafel balls in Colorado, outside of the ones I make at home from the NY Times 1970s cookbook. The secret? They are tiny, about the size of a walnut, and it allows them to get the inside cooked without turning the outside into something resembling a walnut hull after a summer or two in the New Mexico sun. The sides are just average and the place could use a good cleaning. One downer: the music was enough to drive you to serial killing. After about 30 minutes of the chanting (Buddhist or Hindu, Buddhist or Hindu?) I concluded it had no discernable musical structure. Based on my semester at Naropa, I'm guessing it was Buddhist. Convenient location but very bland food. The falafel bread is the best part of this dish as this place is quite conservative when it comes to flavoring the meat. Also the gyro meat is over-cooked, dry, and comes in small shavings. The falafel are decent... small bites but cooked well. The rice is undercooked and not soft. If you have a bland palate this place is your dream. However if you are middle eastern or have traveled outside of white America you will find this place a notch below mediocre. read more

I had been eating here for a while and thought it was really solid, but yesterday I went and there was a long line which moved really fast, I ordered a wrap which was AMAZING.
