I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel obligated to share my experience with Fair & Square Pools so other homeowners understand what the closeout process may look like. The pool itself turned out nicely overall, but the experience at the end of the project became extremely stressful and disappointing. Before the project was fully completed, I identified several unresolved items including defective travertine, missing travertine installation around a deck jet area, and concerns regarding electrical completion. Despite these items being raised prior to final closeout, I was repeatedly told that everything would become a "warranty item" only after full payment was made. I attempted to work collaboratively and proposed reasonable solutions, including partial holdback agreements and written completion terms, but those were rejected. What concerned me most was the communication style once final payment became due. I received repeated threats of lawsuits, attorney fees, and ROC escalation despite clearly communicating in writing that payment was being made within a specific timeframe. Even after providing that timeline, additional legal threats continued. I understand contractors need to enforce contracts and collect payment, but professionalism and customer communication matter -- especially after a homeowner has already invested a significant amount of money and lived through a long construction project. In my opinion, the biggest issue was not the construction itself, but the pressure tactics and unwillingness to provide any meaningful protection or flexibility regarding unresolved items before final payment was made. If you choose to work with this company, I strongly recommend: - Documenting everything in writing - Clarifying punch list procedures upfront - Understanding exactly how final payment and warranty items will be handled before the end of the project I hope the remaining items are completed as promised and that no further escalation becomes necessary. read more

I won't support a company that leaves their crap all over a neighborhood. I'm all for advertising, but putting 10+ signs all over private property is ridiculous. read more

I'm not sure where to even begin! Mac, his wife Kelli and the entire team with Fair & Square have been amazing! We originally reached out about a pool build in 2023 but decided to wait. Once I reached back out end of 2024 without hesitation Mac jumped right back into our quote and gave us a deal we would be stupid not to take! He promised a 70 day build time and completed the project in less than 60 from excavation (1/27) to pool fill (3/14). We have thoroughly enjoyed watching our project come to life and with now just passing the 60 days since start (Jan 27th) we have had our backfill for our front yard rocks to be done from equipment trips back and forth, yard cleaned up, and only have minor grout touch ups on the water feature left. Mac truly built a resort style pool for a play pool price. Highly recommend!!! read more

There is not enough space to write about the experience with this company. They finished 4 months late after abandoning the job. The only thing that made them finish was the Arizona Registrar Of Contractors complaint I filed. This is only some of the poor quality work they think should be acceptable. Pool finish looks like sand in the pool. The travertine is supposed to be a French Pattern without small pieces filling space. Charge on the bill for $390.00 for parts never used. Dead trees, broken and scratched travertine, garage floods, and they told us they would repair the front yard and replace the tree and plants they ran over. We missed the part in the contract that says the 3rd and final payment will be paid before the pool finish is started. Strange to demand final payment before half of the job is completed. I have all text messaging and all video from 14 cameras recording 24/7 on this experience. read more

Stay FAR away from this company!! We had nothing but problems! From the measurement of yard (which was not done IN person) to everything going scrappy at every stage. Our pool leaks and has yet to be resolved. Reaching out to Mac or the office staff accomplishes NOTHING. They had 1 female employee that was doing everything she could and was so knowledgeable and helpful but have since found out she is no longer with the company leaving is again with no resolutions and being made to feel like our only option is lawsuit. We asked for a quote from 5 companies.  We wanted a heated 30 x 15 pool, 3 waterfalls, sapa with extra jets, self-cleaning pool, outdoor kitchen, and play area (artificial turf). It was a big project for us. We started 2021 January. It was the busiest time in our area since our town (QC) is growing rapidly. There are tons of new homes and many people moving in.  We knew it would be a one-year project. I want to leave honest reviews about Fair and Square. I see many bad reviews, and I understand the frustrations they have to deal with. First, you need to understand that "It is all about PATIENCE."  Building Pool is a stressful project, and you need to deal with it if you really want a pool. If not, forget it.  Especially building a pool in Arizona this time, you need to know there are many problems you might face. Also, you need to understand that Lack of materials. Lack of workers those two are not under the pool builders' control, so you cannot blame them for the schedule not being on track.  Secondly, "Communicate with them". You need to communicate. If you have any questions, ask them. Small wonder can be a big issue and problem. Aks Mac or Jake if you think something is wrong or even a tiny thing. They will answer and resolve the issue immediately. Thirdly, "You have to study about the pool installation process as well." I completely understand that you pay for the installation to the pool builder, so it should be all under control, and it is their responsibility to complete the project without any issues.  However, the process goes much smoother with much less stress if you learn how the pool installation works. You can predict how long this digging process takes, how to water the shotcrete, why no one shows up to work (waiting time occurs from time to time. Also, they are in process, but you just don't see them because they stop by just for a quick gas line and water pipe check.) If you know the next step and how it works beforehand, you will feel much less stressed.  Honestly, there were miscommunications and some issues we confronted. However, if you point out your problems and ask them immediately, they will resolve so quickly.  Don't leave it until it becomes too late to fix. You also need to check the progress every day. It is the builder's work, but it is also your pool. If you want your dream pool to be built perfectly, you should also get involved. After 8 months process, Mac delivered a "Nordstrom level luxurious pool with Walmart price" as he promised, and we are super happy with every single thing about Mac and his team's services. read more

Stay far away from this pool contractor ! There are horror stories upon horror, stories of the terrible communication & service, and after they have their money, they want Little or nothing to do with you. The owner is very argumentative and rude. You will have to take him to court or report him to the ROC to get things corrected. Here is a email response from the owner when asking for a copy of my Pentair warranty which was never provided after installation was complete. "We have never once registered equipment for a customer. We've built over 400 pools. In order to file a warranty claim, I simply complete the information that I'm attaching below. I'm not certain why you feel like you have all the answers and can tell everybody how they are supposed to feel and act but you should quit being so entitled. I don't have time for this. Again, if I had a fucking sheet with your warranty information on it I would send it to you so I never have to talk to you again. Why I would continue to say otherwise is insane. The only insane person in this conversation is you. From the time you filed an ROC complaint with no foundation at all, feeling entitled to get things that you ruined with your own subcontractors, after I was kind enough to let you out of, multiple parts of our contract. Your tone and language is that of a child. a threat to take me to court when I've explained how you can get the information and that I don't have it is absurd." Please don't ever contact me again. I cannot say enough amazing things about Mac and his team. They were so great throughout the whole process. In our current times, it is clear that pools are behind schedule and taking longer then they have in the past and supplies are hard to come by, but Mac and his time exceeded expectations. The long of it: I have two friends who work for other pool companies in AZ and advised me that while they would love my business, as a friend, not to use their company because they were just so behind with pools. So I was able to find Mac. I had actually contacted a few other companies for estimates and Mac was the only one who reached out timely to even provide an estimate. (By the time I had even heard back from the others Mac had already started my pool and some of the others acted like I was an inconvenience, or they were doing me a favor by me taking their business). Mac came out fairly quickly, didn't give me any pressure and told me he was happy to work with me and encouraged me to seek other estimates. I went with Mac and he communicated the process along he way made it clear which vendors/contractors were currently were behind or where we might see some delays. But overall I didn't feel it took too long. Everytime I would show updates to my friends and family (including those in the construction and pool industries) they were shocked that it was moving along so quickly. Mac never had any supply issues and had all the options available to pick from when choosing what I wanted for my pool. Every time Mac's team would come to my house they were very nice and professional. Before the landscapers started, his team had me come outside and clarified what exactly I wanted to make sure everything was exactly the way I wanted it. While I understand this is not always the case, and may not happen for everyone, but in the end the project was even completed ahead of schedule. My back yard came out looking AMAZING and I get so many compliments on it. Even my neighbors hired professional landscapers who had to come in and out several times due to errors in their backyard and expressed so many frustrations with their project and said how they noticed Mac's team did so much better with the landscaping in my backyard then they did in theirs. Additionally, my whole pool and backyard is done and they started their project after mine and are still having issues with their project team. My friends who works for pool companies have repeatedly told me how impressed they were with the time and ability to get supplies and confirmed that he was using all the best parts and still building a quality pool in the process. Overall I was pretty disappointed with our experience with Fair and Square Pools. The sales/design process wasn't too bad, we were pretty involved in the design as we knew exactly what we wanted and they listened quite well and made good recommendation as the professionals. However the finished quality of the pool was mediocre at best. The trades they hired are hit or miss. Unfortunately for me the pebble finish crew was the trade that struggled the most. The worst part about the whole experience in their delayed/slow response time to fixing the issues. I understand that not everything is going to go perfect every time, but when something like a umbrella sleeve is installed at an angle, they blamed everything they could, told me it was my umbrella, told me it was a wrong pole size, even told me it wasn't actually crooked (even after two of their reps had been out to check it), super frustrating as the umbrella couldn't even point straight up and it just needed to be fixed. In the end they fixed the main issues that we had, but it took them longer to fix the issues than it did to build the pool in the first place. Currently another issue has surfaced because the hardware used in the pool wasn't the correct hardware and has started to rust really bad, but they responded to my first request with the typical we will look into this, and 3 1/2 months and 3 messages later they have done nothing. Would not recommend them based off my experience. Wish I was writing a review about a poor $50 meal rather than a 90K pool. read more

For estimates of other builders, their price was just the pool. We also were able to do landscaping,pavers, and turf with Macs price included maximizing our back yard space with in our budget.We met with Mac many times throughout the pool build process. If you have to choose between Fair and Square and no pool, choose no pool. Mac started digging in our backyard without even having a permit to do so at which time a gas line was broken and has since become our responsibility to repair. My wife and i reached out to Mac for a quote on a pool in November and due to the holidays, etc did not sync schedules until March. Not high expectations (only thing different was O3+UV with the goal of lower Cl2 usage) and actually meeting with Mac for design ideas on 3/12 thought he was a front runner for the project...small business that seemed like he was down to earth with Midwest values. 24 hrs later he dropped a text saying we were on different pages with our ideas....another builder might suit us better. My wife responded to the text message asking for more information of why he thought we were on different pages...a two way dialogue to simply understand, not change Mac's mind. Makes me wonder about the flyer dropped on our door of "Great Communication" and how the communication thru the process vs the salespitch would be. I am one that NEVER writes a review!! I deal with vendors and clients all day and know how things can go wrong!! But I'm so upset I have too!!! My husband and I started are pool project with Fair and Square pools in June of 2021. We went with Mac because he seemed like he truly cared about us and our project. The pool project was going well until my husband had a few concerns about the water feature and the pool pump. When you spend $89,000.00 or more on a pool you want to make sure its done right. In November of 2021 before Thanksgiving Mac text me and stated they will be out the next day to install the pebble tec. My husband asked to reschedule it due to the other problems he noticed weren't resolved. After that the project went down hill! We didnt hear back from them. Mac's wife sent a text out explaining that due to some health issues projects have been put on hold. This was in December. I reached out to Mac in January to see when they would resume the project. Mac text me back around January 10th stating that they are finishing up some other projects and would be back in the next two weeks to finish the pool. By the way we have paid for the whole project in full. It is required in his contract to pay for the work in full in advance. Mac sets up your contracts in 3 installments each stage of the project you pay him a percentage. So you will have the pool paid off before the work is completed!! Please read the contract!! On Monday, January 17 they just showed up. No text no call. The installers then started ripping out half our travertine tile that was laid and let our dogs out. We had no idea what was going on!! The installers said according to our blueprints they laid to much tile. Im devastated!!! We wanted to cover our entire back patio and to extend it to the lenght of the pool. According to the contract to do that the measurements are short and we didnt pay for the additional tile. If you looked at the 3D image he sent us and what we discussed in person it would cover the back porch and extend the travertine the length of the pool. Instead of communicating with us asking us if we would like to keep what was done and pay the difference they rip up my backyard!! Mac didn't contact us to let us know they were coming over on Monday the 17th. They just showed up!! Mac never discussed the issue of the travertine with us!! They just started taking it apart!! What a waist of material. Especially during a pandemic and materials are hard to come by. They left a mess and all the broken and t busted tile is in my front yard!! We would have never designed our patio this way it looks awful!! Half the patio is travertine and half our patio is our original concrete patio. This is not professional!! Be very careful using this company. My husband chose them as they are a small business, and he was trying to support small businesses however, they were no less in price. What we got was a sub-par pool and lots of issues that are not going to be fixed 14 items listed on our ROC (Register of Contractors Board) complaint 2 of which were the wrong travertine size installed 6x12 instead of the 12x12 (without our approval but Mac's response was he choose to put in what he had on hand) No that a change order and it should be approved by the home owner and per our contract. He installed pillow top pavers when flat top was what was quoted. (Husband is a full-time wheelchair user and we need the flat top to keep his feet from slipping off his foot plate) We specifically requested the flat top for that reason. Mac did work to which outside his contractor's license (Hardscape and Landscape) which his license does not cover. The contractors lisc he holds only allows for pool building. He installed plants without giving us the choice of what plants were being put in our yard. He originally told us we would work directly with a landscaper to choose our plants then came back and told us that we were not allowed to pick what was being put in. WHAT??? There are several issues not listed in this review as I only have so much space. Mac is uncooperative when trying to communicate with him. He yells at you and he will never take responsibility for his actions. He even went as far as telling my husband we did not THANK him enough for building our pool. Mind you we still had 14 issues that needed to be fixed but we should say THANK YOU for taking our money and leaving us with all these problems??? FYI We had to go all the way through the ROC system to get our back yard fixed and we are not even close to being done. read more

We have had nothing but problems dealing with Mac. He refuses to listen when problems arise. He fails to respond and has built us a sub par pool. He's not professional and argues if you asked any questions. We have at this time waited 2 month for him to repair our pool. He installed smaller travertine tiles than on our contract without prior approval. He explained he just decided to use the smaller tiles as the other was not available. Funny thing is several neighbors have 12x12 travertine. Seems other builders can get it. Still waiting for that to be corrected. He told us we would pick out our plants at the nursery and then just dropped off ugly plants without allowing us to choose what was being put in our back yard. Then argued and said he never told us we choose our own plants!!!! What???? He installed a 2 foot retaining wall with no drainage. Even after we had QC inspection that told him what needed to be done to fix the problems he is no where to be seen. Worst contractor we have ever dealt with.
