My wife and I have been here twice, 3/14 and 3/21. We sat at the bar both times. On 3/14 service and drinks were exceptional, we ordered the carrot cake which was good, it did have raisins which my wife doesn't like, but she ate around them. Bartenders took care of it and we were happy. Service this night was top notch. 3/21 we had dinner and drinks food was excellent wild mushroom pasta was to die for, braised short rib was very good. Service was good, bartenders were friendly and nice, just a bit slower and it took longer to get drinks. If service on 3/21 was quicker this would have been 5 stars. We will definitely be back, I want to try more of the pasta. read more

While the atmosphere was cute and cozy, the food was just ok and my service was terrible. I had an empty glass throughout my whole meal and my waitress couldn't be bothered to look at me to notice. She was too busy sitting behind the bar on her phone or with the other waitstaff gossiping. As much as I wanted to enjoy my time here, it just wasn't great. If I'm going to pay $40 on lunch, I would at least like a refill or for the staff to actually pay attention to their customers. read more

My husband and I are new to the Rockwall area, and we happened upon this place while we were downtown. The vibe is Brooklyn-hipster-cool -- lots of interesting books, loft-like space, high ceilings and a ton of character. So I give it high marks for the atmosphere. But it stops there. I don't like to give negative reviews, but after a disappointing lunch experience (pricy, too -- almost $40 with tip), I wanted to share our experience. We really wanted to like this place, but the food - and the wait time for the food (on a Tuesday) - was where it fell short. My husband ordered the Peach BBQ burger, and I ordered a BLAT (bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado sandwich). There was a considerable wait time from when we ordered our food to when it came out (almost 30 minutes - that's a lot of wait time for lunch). When our server brought out my sandwich, it looked like it sat under a heat lamp for some time. The "toast" was flaccid, and there was no discernable avocado - I expected sliced avocado, but it was mashed up and spread on the bread, which made the toast super soggy). The bacon looked like strips of dried out beef jerky - it wasn't crispy like bacon should be. It almost tasted like it was leftover bacon that was microwaved. The whole thing looked so unappetizing that I asked the server to send it back to the kitchen for a re-do. She brought out a replacement in under 5 minutes, and it didn't look any different than the one I sent back. The bacon was overcooked and hard as a rock, along with the same soggy-toast-with-avocado mash, and a small amount of tomato. It was, hands-down, the worst BLT (or BLAT) I ever had in my life. And for $13 all I could choke down from this meal were the decent fries. Also, a small thing to note about the service - we had to ask every time for our water glasses to be refilled. The service here is not what I would call "intuitive" - as in, pay attention to water refills. It's not a huge thing, but something worth mentioning. That's the difference between good and great service, in my opinion. My husband's burger was done to medium-rare, and was reasonably tasty, so there's that. We both agreed that Fable & Fire won't be on our repeat list. I might consider going back there to meet up with friends for a coffee, but that's it. What a disappointment - but hey, it's only one lunch. read more

This was such a cute place. It reminded me of something out of Gilmore Girls from the outside, on the city square with a classic vintage store front. The inside is amazing with the novel book store front and warm modern decor inside and the unique book decor features. They had live music for Mother's Day weekend, not sure was special or the norm. The service was spot on and the food delicious. I had the BLAT with fries. My sisters had the Caesar salad with chicken (so much chicken) and my mother had the chicken on croissant. Met two friends there for lunch. one of friends knowing that I am Gluten free asked the last time she was there if they could be gluten-free friendly. They said the owners husband and wife were very sensitive to peoples allergies and food specifications. They did look like there might've been more choices on the dinner menu, but not on the lunch menu. Our server said they had gluten-free bread for the sandwiches. He then came back and said no they were out. So I ordered a Caesar salad with shrimp that was supposed to be gluten-free. The salad came out. It probably had more cheese on it than it had lettuce I did not get the shrimp. I was given chicken if you call it that it was probably 1/8 of a chicken breast that was overly salted. Aesthetically, this establishment takes you on a journey. From the front of the house which is a bakery, that then leads you to a section that is floor to ceiling of books and what could easily be a very impressive study. A couple of steps later, you find yourself in front of the host/hostess desk where there is a lunge(y) designed restaurant that still fits the theme. The staff was amicable and helpful, although the service was slightly slower than preferred, the kindness, helpfulness and the quality of the drinks and foods quickly made up for it. We ordered the Catcher and the Chai, another mixed drink (I cannot recall), Fried Artichoke, Wild Mushroom Pesto with Shrimp, a Fabled Burger, and Pork Chops. The Fried Artichokes were ok, the portions weren't that big but the sauce was very good. The pasta was okay, but slightly blandder than I would like for a pesto sauce. The Fabled Burger was just as expected and very good for a burger. However, the surprise of the night was the Pork Chops, the size, the tenderness, and the flavor were ON POINT. I would come back to try some of the other things on the menu but probably would avoid the two choices I mentioned previously. read more

You enter a wonderful pastry shop before walking through the bookstore to the restaurant/bar that also has al fresco dining. Three unique shops in one! We went in a group-7-8 people. The environment was super nice but that was about it. Our drinks took forever. Then my friend had a bunch of ice dumped into her mimosa which was really weird. When they brought out my food the girl said tell me if the soup is hot enough for you? To me for a restaurant that is a weird question, did they just heat it in the microwave or why wouldn't they know if it was hot enough. Another friend requested another hot tea and didn't get it until we were ready to go. Plus they upcharged her for her milk so almost $14 for two cups of tea even though the menu said $3 with no mention on the menu or from the waitress that there was an upcharge. Another friend tried to wave the waitress down but was ignored on multiply occasions. We finally got a bills which took forever to get. I went on Friday with a friend for coffee and pastries. First of all, our waiter Eric was so welcoming, friendly, attentive and told us about a few of his favorite things on the menu. The coffee was great and the pastries were delicious. We were never rushed and it was great getting to catch up in such a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. When you go, ask for Eric's section. My sister told me about this place and I was so excited to visit. The vibe is perfect and the restaurant has a great ambiance. However, I felt like looks were the only thing it had going for it. For drinks, we ordered espresso martinis and they were so strong. I understand some people might consider this a plus, but it tasted horrible and was solidly the worst espresso martini I have ever had. My friend and I flagged the waiter and instead of remaking the drink, he brought us hot coffee and poured it into the martinis which in return, made the drinks a curdled mess. We didn't end up even drinking them. If you want to have an actual espresso martini, go next door to The Downing Bottles & Bites. Next, we ordered the whipped ricotta. They give you a decent amount of ricotta and it tastes great, but the crackers they served with it were two pieces of matzah from a box? It was fine, just kind of a weird choice that they were serving matzah. Two pieces weren't enough for our table though, so we asked for more and they actually charged us for two more pieces. This is WILD because a box of matzah is like $3 at the store lol. My first impression was really bad and I don't think I'll be back. Also, the bookstore aspect feels like an afterthought. The selection isn't very good and they appear to be gently used books with cover prices. Maybe the bookstore is just there for the aesthetic. Edited to add - The type of coffee beans doesn't matter if the martini is straight vodka and hot coffee. I don't think the bartender knew how to make the drink. read more

Lovely, lovely space. Very sweet server! We had drinks & dessert during afternoon hours. We expected soft jazzy sounds with the coffee shop vibe during the day. But... We had asked that the music be turned down (we're not curmudgeons, just deep in conversation with a speaker directly over our table) Music was turned down for a moment only to go right back up. The building and decor are stunning and eye catching. There's so much to take in as you enter. It also has a warmth to it. That was my first impression. I came with 3 friends for lunch. Although the beautiful patio was full, our hostess seated us at a table right near it. To be honest, we weren't overly excited about the menu options. I decided on the the chicken pesto sandwich as did one of my friends. We both agreed that it lacked flavor. The chicken breast itself was tender but had no seasoning. The pesto helped but we both needed to add salt. The fries are shoestring. The kind that get cold right away. That surprised us for the price of the meals. Steak fries, truffle fries or sweet potato fries would have been a better compliment. One friend had the bacon burger and she really liked it. She was also disappointed with the fries. The last friend chose the breakfast sandwich and had no complaints. We all agreed that we probably wouldn't come back for the food but for the atmosphere. Maybe the dinner menu is better? First I just want to say that the ambiance on this place is best in the area, it's fun, vibrant, great music! The first time we went we just had drinks, and they have perfected those, great cocktail choices and it's a great place to be for an after dinner hangout. We had issues putting our names down for a table and being skipped over a few times but minor issues of a new establishment. However we went there for the second time for brunch and it was not good. First , it was cold not just mine but my entire groups brunch food was cold. Secondly the quality of the food- the chicken sandwich as hard and had very little meat. The Egg Benedict yolks were cooked completely through, like eating boiled eggs on a cold muffin. The potatoes were mushy, like they had been sitting for quite some time and we were missing bacon that came with the meal. The pancakes were not cooked in the center, and I know that they are Gluten free but when they are cooked on the edges and not in the center that is a result of undercooking. For the first time in my adult life I asked for them to be removed from the check, I usually just push it to the side but at $16 and with all of the other issues it felt like a rip off. The check came with them on still and when we said "I think you forgot to remove the pancakes" she asked why should she do that? and proceeded to explain it was gluten free and it's supposed to be like that, and she would need to ask some other people...Then proceeded to publicly discuss it with every visible staff member. It may seem petty and sending back food is not something that I enjoyed, but not only do we know what GF is but we have prepared these at home numerous times, the center of the pancakes could easily be smeared into a gooey paste and it was given to a child. Eventually they were removed from the check but it left for a negative experience. My recommendation is - do not plan to have a brunch valued at the prices they charge you, skip brunch, enjoy a cocktail, coffee, or a parfait. One person in our group had grilled cheese and soup and he enjoyed it and said it was hot, so maybe brunch is the hiccup. read more

My wife and I have been to Fable and Fire several times. It is becoming our "go to" when friends want to go somewhere as well. The staff is fantastic, from the host stand through the kitchen staff. The last time we went, Chef Eduardo was talking to all of the patrons, asking about their experience. That is the only Chef in the area that has done that at least when I'm around. Don't forget to look through their records, books and local artwork too. Really just a fun place to experience right on San Jacinto where live music generally is on the weekends. They also have a nice patio area where we have eaten. Overall I really recommend going here. My only regret is not taking pictures. :( Sorry y'all. Try the pork chop. read more

Fable and Fire is an amazing dinning experience. Easy and soothing atmosphere without all the crazy echo and back ground noise. Setting is a charming old school European book store. Seating is nicely spaced for an intimate date night, casual dinner, or a party of 6. Food was wonderful and you can tell great care is taken in each receipe great portions for the price too. Don't let the name fool you that this is just a coffee cafe. It is one of Rockwall's best dinning experiences. Brunch, lunch and dinner. No need to get on the hwy and cross the lake. I would put Marc our server in the top 5 of all my Dallas dining experiences over my 10 years here. We will be back. Don't miss this one friends. read more

This is our new go to restaurant. I'm hesitant about giving it five stars and a review because I don't want to be waiting in the line the next time I go there. But it's super great.
