Giving them one star is being generous. Took 54 DVDS and 6 hardback books in to sell. Everything was in like new condition. They offered me a whopping 84 cents! 84 freaking cents?! I took my stuff back and told them no thank you and I will not be back. Even the clearance section had books with covers torn for like $4 They are for sure not like they used to be. Will never ever go back again. Lesson learned. read more

I've bought many books from this location. They have a great selection. I've sold books here too numerous times, and unfortunately some of the staff in the book selling area can be condescending. I think I'll continue to shop here, but I don't think I'll use the book selling area anymore. read more

I haven't frequently sold books but did a few days ago. While waiting for the estimate I walked the store. I saw a series of books I sold months ago. To be honest I don't think they hardly paid anything. I was surprised to see the set selling for $250. Seems odd not worth anything to ME. Also the books I took were worth 65 cents. The lady said they were in poor shape but a set of childrens books were in perfect shape. Doubtful I'll try to sell anything anymore. Do not take your books there. I took about 40 books, hard cover and soft. Some were cooking books that retailed for $30. There were many mysteries. This is the Garland location. They gave me 57 cents. Before that I took about 150 books to the location on Northwest Highway. They were all hardcover books. Many of the books retailed for over $50. They gave me $27. All the books were in great condition. I will never take any books there again. I say if you have good books give them to library or sell on Ebay. Sell them cheap. You will still get more than going to Half Price Books. And while you are there, look at the prices they are selling their books for. I would give a minus rating if I could. My friend who also has taken books there (a retired Chemisty teacher), told me before that she would never take books there. She did take her books there and she did not take what these people wanted to give her for her books. I thought I would try one more time. That was the 56 cent offer. I cannot believe no one has written anything about the low cost they give people for there books. I have seen many people wanting to sell their books to Half Price walk out unhappy abd not take their low ball offers. I should have video taped one person that was very, very unhappy. I will never buy a book there and I certainly will never enter another Half Price Books as long as I live. I am happy I had the guts to write this review. read more

Nice place. My friends took me here for the first time and I lost myself in a sea of books. I'm a huge reader and so this place was right up my alley. They have every kind of book you could possibly imagine. The prices are terrific and the very first time I came here I left with this huge stack of books. This is the type of place you want to spend some time, because there's just so much to see and to read! I also sold them some of my old books. Didn't get much for them but it was something. In a world where the Internet has pretty much replaced cute little places like this it was so refreshing to find this place and I remain a fan even though I haven't been there in a while as I'm not in the area anymore. If you are a reader and prefer the feel of a great book in your hands rather than reading on the Kindle or something like that, then you will love how this place. Definitely check it out. read more

This place is nice to shop at and even explore but I would not recommend selling books here. Here's why. Last time I went they offered me a quarter for selling them nursing textbooks and girl boss by Sophia Amoruso. There excuse was that they have enough of those books in storage. However, my books are worth more than a quarter. I should of sold my books online or somewhere else. Lesson learned. read more

This location is pretty good for finding a good used book. I live next to the half price off 75 & beltline and near the large location near Northpark in Dallas and there are definitely more options there. There isn't really anywhere to sit and read your book which isn't the greatest. I think if you are looking for a book for a class this would be great but if you are looking to browse it is more difficult at this location. The staff here is super friendly and helpful. read more

Well, what can you say about HPB that hasn't already been said. Always loved every location I've ever been to. This one is equally great. It's nice to be able to sell unwanted books rather than either toss them or give to goodwill. Even with my Kindle device, there is still a draw for me to want to hold an actual paper book in my hand and read. As always the staff is very friendly and helpful. I don't know how they hire people but they always have employees that I wouldn't mind working with myself. The book selection is, of course, random but comprehensive. Even if they don't have exactly what you want they probably have something similar that will do. Great place to get used books for the kiddos! read more

I'm a pretty big fan of hpb, but this location was my least favorite. I've visted Irving, Plano, Lewisville and Frisco. The magazine area was messy. The clearance section was smaller than other locations. The store seemed rather small. There weren't as many displays as other locations. Nonetheless, its hpb! I walked out with 2 books. This opened up in early spring I believe, right near the Best Buy and Home Depot. Was it the Lowe's that got voted out here? I forget... Anywho, sis and I came by to drop off 2 whopping sacks of old testbooks/textbooks/magazines. They recycled probably about 20 pounds worth of old Newsweeks and Business Weeklies that my dad had somehow got me subscribed to, but that I had obviously never cracked open. In case you're thinking of throwing out papers or magazines or that certain stash, don't! Half-Price is really good about recycling all of that and they do it for free [though they won't be giving you money for it either]. I am totally considering getting one of their 98 cent Eco Bags, the reusable kinds that are typically way more expensive. They're green too, so props for someone being witty in that regard ;p Our soft-spoken cashier at the Sell Your Books Here area to the side of the store gave me a receipt for $15 cash back in my name for the books we had brought by. She tallied up the total worth of the un-merchandise as soon as I hefted the bags onto her counter, and in the meantime I was told I would have time to look around, and to just listen for a name call. I love their prices here. I found four or five cookbooks in their nicely stocked Cooking section, and settled on one for today, though I could easily have cashed out for the others. Sis found a biographical novel she has been looking for, and of course HPB sells at half the publisher's price. This could totally become a summer hotspot for me, and my dorm room for next year might yet get stocked with cookbooks on the shelves from top to bottom. Ok guys, I couldn't resist....but, if you haven't been to the nearest and newest Half-Price store near the Firewheel area, you better book it over there! =\] read more

As much as I love Half-Price books, it's still the sad back up to my beloved Book Tree. Damn you LA Fitness construction! If you've been in Dallas longer than two minutes, I'm sure you get the concept of HPB. Buy new books for cheap (the leftovers the big boys couldn't sell), buy used books for even cheaper. They also carry a pretty decent collection of musics and DVDs. If you have magazines, books, CDs, or DVDs taking up space, bring them in and get some cash. read more

I'm so glad I finally have a branch of Half Price Books of my own. As far as HPB goes, its pretty much as expected. A good selection of books and movies at a decent price. Not to mention, we found a couple of games for our still in use Super NES. Natch! I don't necessarily find everything there but, regardless of what I went in for, I usually end up walking out with one or two surprises that I stumbled upon. And parents or, in my case aunts and uncles, this is a must stop for last minute bday presents for kids. Wonderful selection of really nice books without the ridiculous pricing you'd get if you bought it brand new. I also appreciate that, even though its suburban, it still offers a gay and lesbian section. It's only about 2 or 3 shelves worth, but it's still more than you get at the Barnes and Noble at the mall across the highway. As for service, I've never exchanged books but the people at checkout are pretty friendly and like talking to you about your purchases which lets me know they actually care about their product. read more

I'd say for the Garland neighborhood and the visibility it has at its location, this is a great addition to our area. BUT there's a nice little bookstore at the square in Garland that's nice too. Don't remember the name. Also, compared to other Half-price books stores it's not as pleasant. For me at least, when I came to it within the first month it had opened, it seemed too cookie cutter and less like a beloved used bookstore. I mean the one in richardson and a couple in dallas are like refurbished buildings. But that's an aesthetic matter. I can still find pretty good deals on books and while it's not as great as a couple of others around Dallas, it's a convenient location. Gone are the days where I have to drive twenty minutes to get my used books fix! read more

I love Half Price Books for browsing, and buying books... But don't ever bother trying to sell them books, its a racket... I took in about 25 to 30 almost all hardcover, and in good shape books, mostly thinning out my own book collection. These were quality military and history books mainly, with a few kids books, and some others thrown in. They call me for my "offer"...they said they only found maybe 7 that would go on the shelves, the rest they would donate or recycle...their offer...$4.60. So they offered less than $1.00 for the books they wanted and were going to toss the rest. I was not happy with their ridiculous offer, I took about 8 back from their reject pile I wasn't just going to leave there, and the lady said "Our offers are usually for everything..." and I said "If you are just going to donate them or recycle, what do you care" I think their scam is they essentially pay people nothing for their books, then sell them at essentially 100% profit...and I am betting the "reject" books find their way onto the shelves with a price tag too, more gravy. Enjoy them for buying books, but don't buy into their phony baloney "We buy used books" racket...its a scam for sure. read more

Once upon a time, a girl grew up in Dallas and was obsessed with HPB. She spent way too much time and money in the various locations around the metroplex. When she moved to NYC, she went through serious withdrawals. Where would she find old books on clearance for $1? How would she feed her travel book addiction? Her friends told her to go to The Strand, but it just wasn't the same. When the girl moved back to Dallas, she was happy to find a new HPB close to her hometown Wylie. Although it's not as big and fancy and the other HPB on NWHighway, it will do for those quick trips to the bookstore. read more

It's a little smaller than most HPBs, but despite the size we always come home with a treasure or two! They have a great selection of kids books, teen books, cookbooks, and fiction. You can easily find your wY around the store and unlike the flagship Dallas store on NW Hey, the sheer volume of stuff to look through is not overwhelming. We love selling books here because there is rarely a wait of more than 10-15 minutes to get your offer. We also appreciate the staff's willingness to donate excess stock to our Little Free Library project. read more

I love Half Priced Books long before I stepped into this one, but....This one is by far the best. They sale and buy used books, movies, cds, magazines, comics, and computer programs. They also have sales and discounts going all the time. This specific one gets a 5 in my book. I had asked about a book being in stock and after the girl looked it up, we proceeded to go around the store picking up lots of great books that really were right up my alley to read. She was so helpful and friendly. I have to say this is the best hpb service I have ever received. read more

This was my first trip to HPB. I have to say, I'm happy I made the trip. This store is huge! I walked in shortly after they opened. My reason for this trip was to sell some books I had no use for. When I entered the store, I immediately noticed a large sign hanging from the ceiling which read " Sell Books Here". Great, I was pleased at how smooth my trip was going. A friendly female employee greeted me and thoroughly explained the process to me. I decided to browse around while she was creating her offer. She paged me back within 10 minutes. I was a little disappointed that my offer was only for $30.00 for about 15 excellent condition books. But I accepted, as I needed the quick cash. This HPB was very organized and clean. There is plenty of room between every isle and category signs are well displayed. I passed several employees stocking, or organizing and each one greeted me and offered their assistance if needed. I was looking for anything by Jen Lancaster, but the last copy had recently been purchased. So I cashed in my receipt and left. This is one of the most pleasant shopping experiences I have ever had and I plan on returning. read more

I Brought over 100 Clean Hardcover and Softcover books ( most being the former) in today to sell and they offered me only $10.00 for them all. These books were from my Father's Engineering firms Company library but they had no markings at all. Most were purchased for between $50 and $200 dollars each and were from high end publishers such as Greenwood, Quorum, Praeger, McFarland, Jon Wiley & Sons, Kluwer and Oxford with the rest being mostly University Published material on narrow subject matter. Most looked brand new and were published within the past 3-15 years with no new editions being published since. $10 for 7-8 thousand dollars worth of books. I refused the offer and noticed that they only looked at the ones with bar codes to scan. I guess this was to find what the internet price which is ridiculous since this is a Brick & Mortar Bookstore. Never Again will I try and sell anything to Half Price Books. I immediately took all of the books to the Salvation Army for Donation, and that is where the rest will go which is roughly 3-4 thousand titles. I'm not sure how they can make an offer such as this with a straight face considering that the seller will spend an hour gathering the books, spend money on gas to drive to their store and then waste an hour listening to the employees cut-up and talk louder than any Customer I've ever heard. And did I mention that being arrogant and rude to their Customers seems to be a requirement for employment at all their locations. read more

Went in today to look for a book I've been meaning to buy for a friend as a late Christmas present. I asked both of the ladies working there for help finding the specific book I was looking for, and both of them treated me like I was a bother for asking. I'd rather go somewhere else with a more polite staff and better customer service, i probably won't be back to this HPB location. read more

My favorite Half Price books is the biggie off of Northwest Highway, but this little "satellite" store is more convenient for me and it works in a pinch. It's definitely much smaller than the one on Northwest Highway. We often visit for the children's books (I have a 2-year-old) and they have a pretty good (though small) selection of books. read more

Sitting in this half priced books right now selling back books. My mistake was coming on a weekend. They told us 40-45 min wait, it's now been an hour and 20 minutes and we're still waiting. Also, you're not allowed to leave the store and come back once they're ready to tell you a price, you have to wait around in the store. I love Half Price books, some people need the smell of a new book, not this gal, the older the better. I can't walk out of here without buying something. It's also pretty cool that they have movies, records, and a great children's section which is pretty standard for HPB but I thought I should mention it. This location is clean, the staff is friendly and I enjoy browsing the selection they have. My only complaint is that my mother in law brought 6 boxes full of pretty decent books and was only given about $12 for all of it, I know you are never going to get the price you paid or even close to the piece you paid but come on, that many books for that little, they were easily worth a couple hundred. Oh well, no hard feelings especially since I wasn't selling them, just felt bad for my Mil. read more

This is by far the best place to shop for used books and new or very old magazines like Life and Look. Any subject you can think of they have. The prices on their compact discs I've gotten for as low as a dollar and they carry a ton of vinyl if your collecting those. Periodically they have 40-50% off coupons and you can really clean up. Not the flagship store on northwest hwy.but a really great neighborhood store. Employees are nice and knowledgeable. You can also sell your used books and whatever here. If your a book nut then you just died and went to heaven. read more

I love HPB, especially for a great selection of cookbooks at really good prices. The books are treated with loving care and most are in good enough condition to give as gifts. And, I love the smell. Each time I have been met with a different pretentious, unhelpful, surly employee who gives me incorrect information. I am a huge fan of HPB and really enjoy visiting the stores often especially the one in Dallas off Northwest Hwy. I recently moved to Garland and noticed HPB near George Bush Hwy. I was eager to go check out the store I visited HPB Friday afternoon around 3pm with my children ages 15,9,5, and 2. It was almost empty except for a few patrons. The younger ones were excited to visit the children's section. It is very small compared to other locations. There was one small table there where 2 adult women were reviewing titles. Within 5 minutes an employee comes over and just looks around and walks off. A few minutes later the same employee returns and stands right next to me as if he is searching for a book. I continue searching through titles...The employee leaves and returns again almost every minute for about 10 minutes. Finally he decides to sit down right next to titles I'm searching through and begins to randomly scan titles. I move elsewhere to get out of his way...Next thing I know he happens to be standing right beside me again. He clearly was following my family around the store and watching us like a hawk. Even taking the time to come to counter to view me checking out book. Not once did this employee offer assistance of any kind. He was extremely rude and clearly targeted my family because of the color of our skin. I have Never encountered any situation like this at any other HPB store. The employees have always been friendly and helpful..Not at this location. read more
